My wife and I had a splendid couple of meals here last week (23 + 25 Oct). The food was excellent : calamari and sole goujons - and the waiting staff were both courteous and friendly. We were surprised to read a poor recent review where a steak was criticised - in fairness the restaurant holds itself out as a primarily fish restaurant which maybe explains the problem ? We are very happy to recommend the Watch House. Hugh + Sarah Price

Went for a meal with friends. My friend politely mentioned that she wasn’t happy with her steak. The manager didn’t take it well and tried repeatedly to get her to go to the kitchen to look at the steak. We felt really uncomfortable with his behaviour. After the 4 th time of asking her to go to the kitchen a few of said she didn’t want to. He then went to the kitchen and we heard smashing. A really uncomfortable experience. We won’t be returning. This is a shame because we have previously gone on several occasions.

After finding it very difficult to locate The Watch House's menu alongside known and highlighted allergens, I resorted to phoning the restaurant to ask for details of the gluten and wheat free dishes they provided. I was extremely disappointed however to have my questions answered in such a dismissive and curt manner. After explaining that I was intolerant to both wheat and gluten, I was repeatedly told that 'I'd be fine" which gave me the impression that the restaurant was not committed to responsible nor caring customer service. Both my phone call and in house experience would suggest that some significant improvements need to take place for this business to remain open in the future, such as clear labelling of allergens on their menu, transparency with regards to their FSA star rating, as well as a dramatic change in the management's attitude to quality customer service.

Appalling. I was served a less than acceptable steak that was over cooked, tough and of poor quality and the manager would not accept it. He came back four times to challenge me, even asking me to step into the kitchen to again have him tell me that his steak was fine and it was my problem. Something I refused to do. Bullying behaviour at its worst. He made me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. I have never experienced passive aggressiveness like it. The attitude was intimidating. We have been visiting here for over 10 years and now will be avoiding at all costs.

We have visited the Watch Out 2 or 3 times in the past and it has always been sensational, so much so that we booked to spend a few nights in St Mawes, the chips used to be twice cooked and beautiful, now they are like frozen steak chips oily and horrible, the fish was so so, I was really disappointed and it is not cheap. I hope it improves because St Mawes is beautiful.

Really disappointed, very expensive overcooked and greasy bland food, we’ve used the take away many times in the past but we won’t be going back! £49 for 2 portions of fish and chips, 1 sausage and chips, 3 cans and 3 sauces, daylight robbery! Most of it ended up in the bin.

As a family, we have this evening bought 4 portions of fish and chips and a child’s chicken meal from the take away hatch. I had a large portion and when I opened the box I could have laughed at the flat, overcooked fish portion. There was just one meagre layer of fish. The chips were dry. None of us could finish them. Also, no salt and vinegar. Perhaps we should have asked? The child’s portion was also overcooked, the chicken portions being so hard it was an effort to bite through them. £62 wasted. I have fish and chips fairly often but never felt so robbed. Look elsewhere. It might have helped if the lady who served us could manage a smile! Shameful service, taking advantage of customers who they know they’re unlikely to see again.

FANTASTIC fish and chips here! We had takeaway twice whilst staying at the Ship & Castle. 2 x fish and one chips is enough for most people. Onion rings scrummy, and curry sauce and garden peas delicious. Sat on our balcony watching the sun go down with fish and chips, it was perfect! Very fresh fish, price was fine - I can honestly think of so much worse to do!!! Sending our best and hoping you have a brilliant summer.

We decided to return here after a wonderful experience in 2020, this visit was a stark contrast, whilst the food was good albeit a little overpriced, ( burger, ravioli & soft drink £47) the server was abrupt and seemed uninterested in his customers, It felt like he didn’t want to be there. Additionally we could here swearing from the kitchen which contributed to an overall disappointing experience, we will not be returning

This is a very casual place that seemed to be popular with the locals. We split the large “roasted” shellfish which included prawns, scallops, mussels, claws from two types of crabs all served in a delicious broth of olive oil, garlic and lemon (£55). The seafood was exceptional. We wish we had come back here again during our stay in St. Mawes. The service was young but friendly.

On a visit to St Mawes we tried The Watch House chip shop take away which is situated at the side of the restaurant. There were several customers and your order is freshly made so there wad an expected short wait. Both myself and my boyfriend ordered fish, chips & crushed peas which came to approximately £28 or £29 The portions were large in fact the take away box they came in could barely close. We took our food back to our hotel a minutes walk away to eat on our balcony and they stayed hot. The fish was delicious and the chips were also tasty, I usually have mushy peas but the crushed peas were a nice change. They were really filling and we couldn’t finish it all. The take away price was about the same as the restaurant price (we couldn’t dine in the restaurant as it was full) and for take away we thought it was a little overpriced.

The food was great tasting and certainly well prepared, but sadly let down by delivery of meals to our party. We had booked the table. Our meals arrived some distance apart which meant we could not enjoy eating together. People want to eat their meals together. The waiter said the late meals would come off the bill. However, when we received the bill there was no reduction. On querying this we were offered a free bottle of wine. On reflection of the final bill and lack of expected service of an establishment of this quality this was disappointing customer service and would mean we would not return sadly.

I ate here with my husband and son for the first time. We hadn’t had a recommendation or looked on Trip Advisor first but we were wandering by the open door of the restaurant after they had finished lunch service and were closed. The staff were so friendly when we asked to book a table for dinner, we knew it would be good.Great location right on the beautiful harbour side, parking near by in the public car park. There was a lovely atmosphere, super friendly staff especially Antonio our waiter for the evening. Great views over the harbour and beyond. I read reviews from people moaning about being upstairs and not downstairs in the ‘better’ part of the restaurant.....there are no views downstairs and upstairs is lovely. The food was fabulous from the Salt & Pepper Squid, muscles and prawn cocktail to the burger and the Seafood Spaghetti which was the best my husband and I have eaten, it had so much flavour, absolutely gorgeous. We finished with a Lemon tart which was also really lovely. We sampled the good range of beers on the menu and we couldn’t fault anything from our evening at all and would highly recommend The Watch House.

Quickly shown to our table it soon became evident all the staff performed to this high standard, so what about the food ? Needn’t have worried, everything was all you hoped for. Promptly served , it was nicely presented on a good sized plate, superbly cooked in batter and the fish was indeed suculant and better still properly cooked. We have previously had fish and chips from here as a take away when we visited the area before and were so impressed we made a note to return. As the weather was miserable this time, we ate in the restaurant. It was cosy and clean, the service was excellent and the food ....... exceptional. The beer battered fish was light, crispy and melt in the mouth. The chips were better than any so called triple cooked chips, they were crunchy and soft in the middle and impossible to leave alone. Served with homemade tartare sauce and crushed minted peas (absolutely gorgeous) I doubt you would get better in any Michelin star restaurant.

Between us we ate salt and vinegar calamari, crab and avo on toast, smoked salmon and crusted scallops in the shell to start and then the most delicious Sri Lankan curry, baked cod on clam chowder, classic fish and chips and the sage escallop of chicken.Beautifully cooked, seasoned and presented without any unnecessary faffy garnishes; friendly service, delicious cocktails. After wandering around St Mawes trying to decide what to eat, we thought we would make the most of the evening sun and get some fish and chips and sit on some nearby benches to enjoy the view. The chips were really tasty but they were quite expensive for a chip shop and unfortunately I think we had the last of the portion as we had a lot of little crispy bits rather than full chips. The other half had fish which he said was very good and he thoroughly enjoyed it whereas I had a portion of curry sauce. I thought the curry sauce wouldn't be enough as it is quite a small pot, but it's very rich and delicious so you don't actually need as much!We would eat here again and would recommend others to have a lovely takeaway and enjoy the view instead of being hidden in a restaurant!

A lovely warm summer's day and my wife wanted to eat at the Relais and Chateau nearby . We chose the Old Watch House on the second viewing of their menu and when the food arrived knew we had made a excellent decision. A decent menu . My wife and I chose 2 starters which we then shared. For the main course I chose the goujons which were more like fillets and they were superb. Oysters were sweet and fresh and the shellfish was beautifully cooked - small sweet muscles, plancha prawns , crab claws and scallops all in one stunning plate with a light chilli, parsley and lemon broth - fabulous. Fresh lovely shellfish served in a simple and uncontrived style is a breath of fresh air . Heavenly accompanied by a cold bottle of Picpoel de Pinet The cod curry was one of the finest I have ever had - this will be hard to beat the bar is now set higher than Simon Cowells trousers. Chunks of firm yet yielding cod in the tastiest of curry sauces - layers of flavour served with light basmati right with thin and crispy deep fried onions on top! I wanted fish and chips by the sea and, as this place appeared to be the only option I could see on the sea front in St Mawes I tried it.Orders were taken but, rather than being fulfilled in the usual way with a chippie, you had to wait while they got round to your order: I appreciate that this was because of the kitchen also servicing the restaurant, but a little more organisation and focus by the staff might have helped. The young girl serving wasn't the most efficient, but was doing the best she could. After waiting some time (seemed like about 10-15 minutes) my order was called. As I don't eat a great deal, and was appalled by the price of a full 'fish and chip' portion (nearly £8!), I ordered myself a child's portion of fish and chips. Note that the menu said, under children's meals, 'fish and chips'. When it arrived it was 3 fish goujons rather than a piece of fish, and a handful of chips. It looked almost neon yellow. On the plus side, the food was hot. That was about it really. The fish was tasteless. The batter squidgy and under (or not) seasoned. Much seemed to be made of it being 'beer batter' but it just seemed inadequate. The chips (twice or even thrice cooked - I can't remember the hype) were greasy: cooking them several times might crisp them up but in this case it also infused the potato centres with fat so they also failed to hit the mark. The only flavour came from the salt and vinegar I added and had to add more of because they were so dreadfully tasteless.I think they would be better off reverting to traditional fish and chip recipes and leaving the current fashionable recipes to those with the skill and experience of producing them properly. I appreciate that St Mawes seems to pride itself on being a cut above the typical seaside town, but posh doesn't really cut it when it comes to having fish and chips out of paper on the seafront! They also need to review their staffing, staff training, and processes in order to make them more efficient, and perhaps look at pricing (although I suppose that, if they are the only fish & chip takeaway on the seafront in St Mawes they can get away with it).

Both times that we dined here during our week in Cornwall we had a great time The staff were great and fun and made it all very easy for my husband who is in a wheelchair The food was absolutely delicious and we all had a difficult time choosing as the menus was extensive and all looked yummy being 9 in the party we tried a good variety of dishes and they were all delicious. The atmosphere was teriffic which is why we booked a second time rather than having the watch house take away fish and chips.

He revisado antes.

Decided to take our tea back to the caravan, my husband had fish, chips & mushy peas, I had sausage, chips & curry sauce, & 2 child meals. Well the child meals were tiny for £4 & £5 they only had about 6 chips, my husbands fish- well you get nicer in Iceland ! his mushy peas were disgusting, they were minted like crushed frozen peas which went straight in the bin, my curry had no taste & was like water, & the chips were the worst chips I've ever eaten, it cost us a fortune it most of it went in the bin, what a shame !!!

Checked opening hours online and it said that it was open until 8:30pm on a Saturday. Arrived just after 7:30pm to be told that there was no fish left, no sausages left, nothing and that they had ran out! Either this is a sign that they had an unexpected rush or their ordering process is poor! We had some chips instead. They seemed ok. Would suggest they need to reduce their opening hours if they don’t have enough stock to supply what they advertise.
