Tucked away on Great Minster Street, opposite the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, is this pleasant little pub/eatery. Kitted out with a nice mixture of airy walls and dark panelling, this 18th Century Inn lends itself perhaps more to winter evening dining than bright sunshine at the tail end of Summer. That being said, there is seating outside, though whilst we opted not to make use of this, choosing instead to take a seat inside, on a spacious table by the window with views of the Cathedral. We ordered food. My friend had thr pie of the day with seasonal veg and new potatoes. He assured me it was excellent, whilst I had the breakfast ciabatta which was superb. The service was pleasant, though all the staff looked about 11 years old, and the whole experience was one I shall remember fondly. Who knows when I will be back in Winchester, but if/when I am, I should like to return here.

Called for a leisurely drink on a sunny afternoon to watch the world go by. Even though two different girls regularly passed our table we had to ask them to clear the previous customers dirty glasses etc. decided to have a light lunch & chose the fish finger sandwich. It was so obviously a Birds Eye or similar freezer shop fish finger. Shame on the chef.. I use the term loosely! If a chef can’t make a basic fish finger it’s time to hang up your apron.

Wet day in Winchester. The vine was warm and welcoming, fish and chips order of the day and although the fish was rather on the small side it was beautifully cooked and the chips were lovely. No real complaint except for the smallest fish I have ever been served.

I had not been in The Old Vine for many years so tried the lunch offering. It started badly with an unhelpful staff member asking me if I was looking for the er.... then walking off. I ordered at the bar and enjoyed a pleasant fish sandwich. The location is very good, near the museum and Cathedral.

This restaurant was excellent and the food specials on the blackboard were very good. I had Shetland Mussels and my wife had Homemade Fishcakes which were both very tasty. pub drinks were very nice and there was a good list of wines although we did not order them. Having made a booking for a few weeks time at this pleasant looking hotel, I was rang back by the assistant manager 20 minutes later who told me the price had gone up by £30 – apparently because there was an error on their website; ‘computer says’. I accepted this but expressed dissatisfaction and asked if someone senior at the hotel could honour the original price quoted or, if that was not possible, perhaps offer a complimentary drink or something. I was rung back twice over the following 24 hours to be asked, about four times, whether I wished to go ahead with the booking – each time I confirmed I did. This morning a brusque individual, apparently one of the hotel owners, rang me to say they weren’t accepting my booking because of my attitude. Well – good luck with running a successful hotel if that is their attitude!

As one of our favourite places to eat in Winchester we booked for an early dinner before a concert at the Cathedral. We had a great table in the restaurant next to the fire although sadly the fire went out pretty soon and when we asked for it to be re-lit were told this wasn't possible! Food was tasty - lamb shank excellent, chicken/chorizo skews good (although slightly overcooked) and chocolate delice very good (although rather hard). Staff all very helpful and friendly despite being very busy!

Our 8th Yr at Winchester for Xmas market, always dine at the Vine. Always been great but this yr not so. Both had the Ploughmanns in main restaurant, was cold in there & the ploughmans poor. Not much ham, small salad in centre with 1 small tomato chopped in half, hubby's had 2 slices of thick, bulk standard brown bread & I got 1 slice of gluten free toast. Worst of all was the pile of plain, bland crisps dumped on the dishes.....a plate filler. Wine good as always. But not sure we'd go back, shame.

We have stayed two nights in the Old Vine for our wedding weekend. We couldn’t be happier with our rooms, service and experience here. Everyone member of staff as been extremely welcoming and helpful. We had a meal booked the night before our wedding with all our family. The food was incredible. They probably don’t get a lot of thank yous in reviews so we like to give special thank you to the Chefs! There wasn’t a single problem during the night and were looked after extremely well! The girls serving did a fantastic job. As we decided later on to book another night to stay we had to change rooms. So glad that was the case as the second room was even better than the first. The rooms here are amazing. Stylish, comfy, immaculately cleaned, great options for coffees/teas. Overall we couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay for our special occasion. Thank you all. Thank you for the card and chocolates we received after our wedding as well! Small touches like that are wonderful.

Visited back in November so only just getting round to doing this review Couple dinner, celebrating Ordered the Greek style lamb and it was inedible. There was so much visible fat on there I'm surprised it missed the chefs and waitress's attention. Have one mouth full of the meat and left the rest. Was asked how it was, showed the waitress the fat. And unfortunately nothing was done about it. I don't mean a free meal but an apology ilot acknowledgment would have been nice. Just mediocre really. Mediocre interior, mediocre food, mediocre atmosphere. We'll go back one more time (hence the 2 stars and not 1) just in case we fell through the gap.

Very chilled couple of days spent here as a friends getaway . Although in the middle of Winchester it was peaceful and relaxing . Very atmospheric setting right by the cathedral . Nice outside seating and a sweet courtyard at the back of the property . We stayed in the Nina Campbell room , which was a joy. Spotlessly clean , very spacious in a comfortable and well equipped room. Huge bathroom , great shower too. The breakfast had a big selection and the produce was very good quality . Loved the evening meal too which was wonderful. Again a varied menu but well done , not too much choice . The whole place has a wonderful ambience . I would recommend ! All the staff were very pleasant and helpful , and looked after us so well. Thanks everyone !

I come here all the time. Usually great. Today I brought a bottle of white wine which was warm. When I took it back to the bar to ask for a new bottle I was faced with aggression. After much deliberation it was agreed to replace my bottle at which point I watched my glasses, which we had me drinking from, be poured back into the bottle and the bottle returned to the fridge 🤢 Such a bizarre thing to do. I certainly won’t be coming back again soon.

It used to be the pub for excellence to eat in Winchester, but the quality of food has come down: -the kedgeree was a massive, unseasoned, bland pile of rice with a few toppings. -the breaded cheese with fig relish looked like straight from the frozen aisle of a supermarket. -the puff pastry tartlet was probably the best dish, due to the massive amount of cheddar on it. Also, service was slow and sloppy. Furthermore, when I wanted to take away the half kedgeree bowl I couldn't eat (hoping to transform it into something with taste at home), I was told that wasn't possible, that there was not taking away food any more. But they could give 'some foil' for me to wrap it up... I think I'm not going back.

In short, excellent food and good service in a lovely venue. For more detail, read on. I last visited The Old Vine in Jun 22, and before that in 2018, and on both occasions, I really enjoyed my visit thanks to good food and service. This visit was at lunchtime on 18 Aug 23. To set the scene for anyone not familiar with this popular venue, The Old Vine is situated right in the centre of Winchester, a stone’s throw from the High Street and Butter Cross, in the lovely tree lined Great Minster Street. It overlooks Cathedral Square and the west end of the Cathedral itself, although the trees obscure the view of the Cathedral somewhat in the summer. It’s a beautiful looking red brick Grade II listed 18th Century Georgian building, with sash windows, oak beams, wooden floors and real fireplaces. There is certainly a really welcoming and relaxed ambience about the place. Although The Old Vine is an Inn and therefore offers accommodation, with respect to dining, it consists largely of two rooms: a bar room with tables, and a proper restaurant room with full table service. The remainder is made up of a small open air courtyard/patio at the back plus a number of tables outside the front on the semi-pedestrianised street. They are available on a on a first-come first-served basis and cannot be booked and are very popular in the summer months. They provide a rather Parisian air about the place. I should also mention that there is another room towards the back called ‘Little Minster’, which is intended for more private dining. Opening times are typically 12 - 3pm luch times and 6.30 - 9pm evenings. A nice touch is that the opening time in the evening moves to 6pm when there are weekend Cathedral concerts. I turned up to dine in the restaurant as a ‘walk in’ customer rather than having made a booking. Whilst I was able to get a table on this occasion, it is certainly worth considering making a booking, particularly if you are a party of people, as the place does get very busy. At the time of my visit, I would estimate that at least half of customers had made a table reservation. Upon arrival, customers without bookings but who are looking to dine in the restaurant are directed to the bar, from where ‘real-time’ table availability is managed. Upon being guided to my table, I noticed a couple of things. Firstly, decent quality cutlery, and secondly, real proper sized cloth napkins that actually cover your lap. I started with a pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord (£5.60), a slightly hoppy pale ale to accompany a starter of home-made smoked mackerel pate with sourdough toast (£7.00). The title of the dish doesn’t do it justice for it was accompanied by a small dressed salad of mixed dressed lettuce leaves, a cherry tomato, slices of cucumber around the edges of the mackerel, a wedge of lemon and a small block of butter, delightfully at just right temperature for spreading on the freshly baked sourdough bread. All I can say is it was utterly delicious. For mains, although the à la carte menu offered a good selection of dishes, on this occasion I chose something from the ‘Today’s Specials’ blackboard – two fillets of sea bass baked in a paper bag with very finely shredded leeks and four cherry tomatoes, all in a garlic and caper butter sauce. Outside of the bag was plenty of chipped new potatoes and a green vegetable medley (petit pois, fine green beans, wilted greens), all for £17.95. The meal was beautifully presented. The fish just melted in the mouth, and the capers cut through the butter sauce. The garlic was very subtle to my palate at least, in fact I wondered at one point whether there was any garlic, but this did not matter at all, for I thoroughly enjoyed the dish as it was. I opted for a glass of white wine to go with the fish (The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough NZ £7.25). To finish I had a freshly brewed flat white coffee (£3.75), which was accompanied by a complimentary Old Vine chocolate. Turning to the service, as far I could see there were three members of staff who served in the restaurant and helped run the bar and they were kept very busy throughout my visit. Despite being fully stretched at times, they were unfailingly polite and professional, always warmly greeting new customers quickly and dealing with requests promptly. I was impressed with just how efficient they were, but equally, I never felt rushed. My compliments also to the chef(s) and kitchen staff who just kept producing meal after meal, doubtless to the same high standard that I received. I never sensed that anyone was kept waiting unduly for their meal. Although I have quoted prices in my review - the total cost excluing the 10% service charge came to £41.55 - it is virtually impossible to comment these days as to whether my meal represented good value, given the absolutely rampant food inflation here in the UK at the moment. Suffice to say, if you think you can afford it, then go for it. In conclusion, The Old Vine provides for an informal yet distinctly classy dining experience, with its excellent food, attention to detail and good service in a quality location. What has become apparent from this and my previous visits, is that The Old Vine has achieved what is one of the most difficult things to achieve in hospitality: a high level of all-round performance consistently. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit this time and have no hesitation in continuing to highly recommend The Old Vine.

We stayed in one of the 6 rooms available for a quick overnight before catching our cruise leaving Southampton. Check in was easy They allowed us to drop off our bags, and come back later to check in. Laura was very helpful throughout our stay, and even ordered us a cab on our way out. The location cant be beat... I call it right on the cathedral green! We ate breakfast in the inn thats from the 1300's! Neat old beams and of course the food was great!. Did not hear any "pub noise" all night! Would stay there again! In Winchester, be sure to visit the Bishops palace ruins, the Great Hall, and take a nature hike in Winall Moors. The Cathedral is the highlight though!

Food is below average quality and over priced, staff are not trained on how to make drinks and are very unhelpful. The owner is also rude. You are better off going somewhere else as there are plenty of pubs in Winchester that have a professional...

We eat out very regularly in the Hampshire, Surrey area. The Vines wins the prize for the worst ever day out. The staff were incompetent, rude and totally out of their depth. We had to explain what a calypso coffee was, and waited 10 mins...

Awful lunch. Overcooked burger in a dried out bun. Served with a great bit of side salad. Dried out pie. It looked quite unappetising but was apparently “ok” . What a shame in such a lovely setting. It all sounded so good Reminds me of...

Refuse to give credit card details to book a table so these days arrive early (lunchtime) and take a chance. This time the restaurant was fully booked so we ate in the bar. Same menu but without the service. Not a problem, food still excellent.

The food was excellent. Service was slow, but when we pointed out that we were going to a concert everything came quickly. Thank you for that!

OK visit, not quite up to what we expected. Ham and eggs was quite ordinary. Duck was good, but not with what was on the menu. House Rose wine good. Prices average, but 10% service added to the bill, and we hope the staff actually...

We had a roast dinner for 2 people this weekend. The kitchen allowed us to have the Lamb Shank from the main menu as a roast which was perfect. The staff and ambience of The Old Vine are second to none. One small critism is...

Walking from the cathedral into town, we chanced upon The Old Vine and were very happy to have done so. It was clearly a place for regulars and we had arrived quite early for lunch - at about 12.15 - so were lucky to get...

A lovely pub in a great location overlooking the cathedral. Good range of beer, friendly and helpful staff and a good, moderately priced food. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Normally the food is good but not on this occasion. Avoid the beef brisket would be my advice to you. Tough and practically inedible. We complained and the table next door also complained. Not what you expect from an establishment such as this which overlooks...

Well said clearly on receipt espresso on the side. Obviously cannot read. Coffee was vile so returned and got snapped at. Won't be coming back here.

Have not been here since pre Covid. Other reviews were not so good, but we had no complaints. We were early on a Sunday morning so although quite a few people the service was not slow. The coffee was excellent, and the carrot cake jolly tasty. The toilets were very clean. For me I trod carefully on the terrace which did look a bit slippery.

£3.60 for one cinnamon knot/bun..... shameless. Can't fathom the mark up on these things. Seems people care more about clout or image than paying ridiculous prices. Won't be back.

Excellent as always, delicious food, reasonably priced, I wish I’d had room for a pud. Lamb shank is a treat, tender as anything with proper veg.
