Smoked salmon sandwich on granary bread was nice. Bread fresh and salad fresh. Chicken mayo sandwich nice but too much mayo for our liking. Also found a bone in the mix. We were here around 11.50 on a Friday and there was only one other table being used. We were surprised to find the table cloth dirty and the floor didn’t look like it had seen a hoover that day. The roses on the table looked like they had been dead for a few days. Little things that are used to improve the ambience can have a negative impact if not checked and sorted. The service was a bit strange too. The server stood by the bar to take our order rather than approach the table. I didn’t realise at first he was waiting to take our order. We were sat at the front window table. My wife has been wanting to visit for ages but was disappointed, so not likely to return.

After touring round the Artisan Market we decided to have lunch out. Most of the cafes were closed so we walked up to The Old Tea Rooms. We were meet by Debbie, who made us feel as if we were old friends. We hadn't booked and it appeared that most of the tables were reserved for the Sunday lunch. After a short count up of bookings Debbie found us a table. It appears that this place has a high volume of regular customers judging by the conversations going on and the welcome she gave everyone who came through the front door. We had the cooked breakfast (as a brunch) and were not dissapointed. The food tasted excellent and was really well cooked. We did see the roast dinners that were on offer and they too looked amazing. Debbie was a wonderful host and we wil;l certainly going back there again.

We stopped at the old tea house, Dorchester opportunistically, having stopped on our way to the south west. What a wonderful find. We were welcomed by Debs the owner with a warm smile. We hadn’t booked but she found us a table without hesitation. The decor is oldy worldly charm , with rickety floors and unmatched bone china crockery which I love. . We both had a full English Sunday roast dinner with a good selection of vegetables and plentiful portion of meat., all of which was cooked really well. Followed by home made apple pie and custard for my husband and gluten free salted caramel cheesecake for me with homemade butterscotch sauce, which was equally tasty. Two full roast dinners, 2 hearty puddings and a large pot of earl grey tea all for £17.00 a head . As we ate, we watched people come and go, many of who Debs knew by name and welcomed warmly into the tea house . The old tea house also does bed and breakfast, and we plan to return and stay over night. And are looking forward to the breakfast which if as good as the lunch will be well worth the stay. Thank you Debs to you and the team .sharon and mark

A warm welcome and delicious food. Debbie our host made sure everything was perfect. This is a family run restaurant and B&B and everyone goes that extra mile. Many locals make several visits a week. That is always a good sign. Bone china crockery added a touch of class. The cream tea was the best I have ever eaten. There is a choice of homemade scones and they are huge. The building contains numerous furnishings and tapestries that complimented the building which is over 500 years old. Well worth a visit and definitely a place we will visit again

We went along to try their raspberry and white chocolate scones foremostly! Having seen the tea house featured on TV programme about Dorset, we were keen to experience it. We were greeted so warmly by the owner who asked us as we were sitting down if we wanted tea or coffee - it felt like we were a guest in her home. I loved all the quaint Mis-matched crockery. It felt like I was visiting my nan’s for the afternoon. The scone was really lovely - and warm! We also tried the traditional Dorset Apple cake with some clotted cream which was also lovely. We spent some time talking with the owner about the history of the tearoom which is amazing to hear: from being a safe house for the friars, to a holding jail for those waiting to go before Judge Jeffreys, to a milners, a penny farthing shop and a favourite tea stop for Thomas Hardy - who would believe such history was in that place - we found ourselves sitting in the window seat thinking about all the people who have sat there before us. A lovely place to stop for refreshment - as others have done for hundreds of years.

Debbie and her family were exceptionally welcoming, generous, and caring, from the scrumptious afternoon cream tea upon arrival to the beautifully packed lunch to send us on our picnic at Durdle Door the next day. The traditional English breakfast in the morning was also delicious and Debbie even told us where she kept the extra cakes so we could sneak some bites for a midnight snack to bring up to our room! Our tummies were so happy :) The room was also very spacious and comfortable. We'll definitely be back to the Old Tea House (next time bringing our parents, who would love the experience!) Came here with my daughter for a light lunch as visiting Dorchester for the day. This cafe is situated in an old building and has been sympathetically furnished to suit its surroundings with old fashioned chintzy furniture and decorations. Due to the age of the building, they have gone for a "spooky" theme with tarot readings advertised, witch signs and a horror house style fireplace. It's not really to my taste but could see that this is their USP! On the day we visited, they did not have a chef so no hot food was available. That was ok as we chose to have a scone and a toasted teacake with cups of tea. The scone was warm on arrival and, though possibly heated in a microwave rather than freshly baked, pleasant. Toasted teacake was very nice. Tea was good and we liked the old fashioned tea sets used. Overall we had a nice experience here.

With only one other table filled and a nice cosy atmosphere we were looking forward to a good meal. Service was a little slow to get going and we waited over 30 minutes for the eagerly awaited full English. The plates were cold as was the bacon. No butter was offered for the cold toast either. The bacon had a strange taste and was not cooked properly and the beans had turned cold after sitting on the cold plate. The tea was nice and hot though! So many people review on what they would expect in a B and B or Hotel and this is what gradually removes the character from all establishments as they try to tick boxes. We stayed at The Old Tea House for a couple of nights while at the Dorset Country Show and embraced the character and charm of the property and family that run it, which all far outweighed any negatives. What we found endearing, funny, delightful, others might complain about but The Old Tea House was just our Cup Of Tea! (or Gin!). Home made hearty food, amazing cakes, pies and desserts, home cured bacon all served in what felt like a family front room. It's not 5 Star so don't expect it. If you want to feel part of the family then go and stay, embrace the quirkyness, character and charm and meet the loveliest, kind hosts that run The Old Tea House. Thanks for a stay we wont forget. We will be back for sure.

Built in 1635? Well, you’d expect they’d got the hang of hospitality. And they have. Hospitable, great cakes, like stepping into a time warp into what a tea shop should be.

We visited The Old Tea House on our recent trip to Dorchester. We had the most delightful lunch and extremely friendly service. I would thoroughly recommend this establishment to all. Sue

We popped into Dorchester on a very hot day, walking into town spotted the tea room. Surprised on entry. Lovely room, China crockery, flowers, great cream tea. If you are an international visitor pop in and see it. Great for tea and coffee and cakes.

This lovely B&B; is on the main street in Dorchester. The car park is very close by and is £4 per 24 hours. We received a very warm welcome on arrival and were shown to our room. This was a suite with a living room and separate bedroom on the first floor. It was very clean. The bed was a beautiful four poster and very comfortable. There are a lot of steps in this very old building and not always easy to see. There is one step into the bathroom and another down to the bath which was well disguised and my husband fell and bruised his back as a result. The shower over the bath did not work very well. However, the breakfast was so very good. We were thoroughly pampered. The fruit was beautifully presented and the cooked breakfast was very tasty. They had gluten free bread and soya milk waiting for me as requested. Sitting in the Tea Rooms for breakfast was lovely as the busy decor is most interesting to see and very clean! I can thoroughly recommend this B&B;.

To celebrate my birthday with my twin sister and family we thought a quintessentially English afternoon tea would be apt. We were not disappointed! The hosts at the Old Tea House were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The high tea ... magnificent! Delicious fingers of sandwiches neatly presented filled with salmon, ham, egg and cheese&cucumber; accompanied by lemon drizzle cake, chocolate cake and scones with clotted cream and jam. Everything was so fresh, the drizzle cake moist with the right level of flavour, the cream of the chocolate cake mousse-like and scones to die for. The Old Tea House is steeped in history and is quite charming. I will definitely return...

On each visit to The Old Tea House I am made to feel to feel most welcome, it does make such a difference. This time, Debbie let myself and a friend have a couple of left over pastries for free, which I thought was a really nice gesture. The experience as a whole was great, the tea lovely, and I will be sure to return here again, soon. Well done for doing what you do, so well- and keep up the good work!

This was a wonderful place to sit down and try some wonderful English food. We sat in the back garden which was lovely (except for the persistent seagull but that is no one's fault!) and enjoyed the little fountain, sunshine and gardens. The food was tasty and the beverages nice and cold. There is a lot of history to this little gem so take a few minutes to read up on it!

Our hostess, Debbie, was very welcoming and happy to accommodate my vegan requirements by providing dairy free 'butter' with my scrummy crumpets! Hubby had the scone, jam & abundant clotted cream and was v.happy with it too :))

After doing some research online, looking for the best places to go for traditional afternoon or high tea in the area I stumbled across The Old Tea House. Admittedly a sceptic when it comes to reviews, however the feedback did look promising & I was lured in by history of the building, I felt this venue would be worth a shot.

Having just spent 3 hours in the Military Museum we were gasping for a cuppa. Only a hundred metres away was this quaint little (from the outside) tea house. It was absolutely delightful. Had a cup and saucer for the first time in ages with a lovely pot of tea. oh and a Scone with Cream and Jam.

This is a very friendly traditional Tea rooms in the heart of Dorchester. We had a superb thigh tea which consisted of various sandwiches, smoked salmon, beef, cheese and tomato and cucumber followed by a selection of different homemade cakes. Chocolate sponge, coffee sponge, carrot cake and lemon cake - all delicious. Rounded off with plain and fruit scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam and fresh strawberries. The very friendly hosts offered us more cream and jam if needed but we could not manage everything. The children were given freshly made sandwiches, cakes and scones and the dog was also made very welcome with his own plate of sausage and chews! Dog friendly - we were allowed to eat inside - made a huge difference on a very hot day. Could not recommend this Tea Rooms more highly - just fantastic.

This was my second visit to this tea room and I have to say it was an excellent visit. The owners are very friendly and really try hard to make everyone happy and make you almost feel like family members. It really is like going to see a long lost Aunty who loves to feed you.

Popped in on Sunday morning. It was about 11 so time for elevenses really, but we had a cream tea. The woman serving was really cheery and made us very welcome. The scones were warm and really light with plenty of jam and clotted cream - delicious! A bit small and a bit dark (we sat in the window so not an issue for us). but the building is very old so I guess this could be a plus in the opinion of others. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

This was recommended by our hotel. Easter Saturday - 3.30 - no tea cakes, no speciality teas, one poor girl trying to do everything. Complaints from others because of the long waiting times. Terribly sad - should have been better.

Here for Mothering Sunday lunch, our party tried each of the roast dinner options all of which were superb. The desserts were great too. All very reasonably priced and served by friendly waiting staff. We were made to feel welcome throughout. All in all we had a fabulous time which helped to make the day special for all.

A small hidden Cafe hidden down a side alleyway, delivers a big smile through it's food and warm welcoming hosts. They make delicious salads, homemade crustless quiche, large saucer style macaroons, homemade sausage rolls and vege rolls. It's the only place in Dorchester that i feel the food is good for you, cooked on the spot there that day, great coffee and choice of tea's etc. Seating is limited and very sadly due to it's size of premises maybe closed due to Covid, please double check. They have worked so hard and deserve all our support
