The Old Ship in Richmond upon Thames

I needed a table for 7 for Sunday Lunch and to watch the Newcastle football match. The staff were so helpful and called to confirm the booking and our needs. We had a great table and the food and service when we arrived was fantastic. A special thank you to Marsha.

We have been before and always had delicious food. This time the food took ages to arrive and when it did it was completely cold,we did get a free round of drinks but not good enough. Unfortunately we won't be back,sorry

Had a few issues with our order from the app but the team were incredible and resolved all our issues with speed and courtesy, Ian and Chris were incredibly welcoming and the roast was one of the best I’ve had. Amazing service, lovely atmosphere, we’ll be back as soon as we can be.

Excellent Sunday roast and lovely seating area upstairs, a young boy named Callum served us who was such a gentleman and very attentive to us. this was our first time here so will definitely be coming back!!

Service was slow. My drink arrived about ten minutes after the others'. At 2.05pm we were asked to vacate the table by 2.15pm (we had booked for 12 noon until 2pm)and yet the reason we were still there was the slow service. No apology. It then took a further ten minutes for us to pay our bill. Earlier, I asked for a single scoop of ice cream but three were served up. Earlier still, I had fish pie. Apart from what I think were three battered whitebait and four small prawns I could find no other fish in a mass of mashed potato. Easily the worst fish pie I've ever had. One of us asked for apple crumble but was told it would take half an hour. When I got home and checked my email I found one timed at 12.30pm saying that our booking was now for 12.45pm! Altogether a very bad experience. It seems that there was a lack of effective management. And if you like fish pie, try the one at The Marlborough. It's very good. Claude Table 24 October 13.

Wow what a Sunday service the best Sunday dinner I’ve had in a while, brilliant atmosphere and all the staff are so friendly! Callum went above and beyond for us and the kids it didn’t go unnoticed I will be coming back.

Held my daughters 13th birthday party in the semi- private space upstairs. Ian and Tuesday made the whole experience incredible for her and her friends. From creativity of her mocktails to the most attentive team, we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you all so much!

Really nice experience. Staff super friendly and attentive going out of their way to bring us drinks and a water bowl for our dog and test the ales without us even asking. Had sandwiches for lunch which were very tasty. Will definitely be back 🤩

Drinks were fine, management and staff excellent. Food let down. Order an starter to try the Ox Cheeks Croquettes; but was only potatoes not a single % of ox cheeks. £7.5 to have mash in a deep fried ball. Let down.

Great atmosphere, friendly stuff .. but horrible food (( Sunday roast was not looking attractive neither tasty. Chicken was overcooked or reheated , beef was not the best quality as well . Potato was not crispy, Yorkshire pudding was over cooked, almost black, dry . I have visited this pub with my friend from other country and wanted to let her try traditional Sunday roast .. unfortunately I had to apologise and invite her to try somewhere else next Sunday.

While in Richmond decided to have lunch at Old Ship. I had a really great experience with the staff. Very knowledgeable and answered every question I had. Tried the Sunday pork roast and it was deliciously! My girlfriend tried the chicken roast. Very nice atmosphere inside as well! Definitely worth a visit.

Didn't have anything to eat so I can't rate that. The pub itself was in a great location. The bartender was on point. Friendly, entertaining and enthusiastic. Great Host. Solid selection of local beers. Some of bar seating is dated but has a lived in feeling to it that brings a sense of comfort. Like drinking a pint with your friends at your house. The bathrooms were surprisingly and unexpectedly clean.

Stopped in to eat and have a few beers. Tried to order 3 different meals choices and they had none left of all 3. They had already poured the drinks, so we felt obliged to sit. We ordered fries which was a tiny serve. Not suitable for sharing FYI. Do not recommend.

Best British food I’ve had outside of Edinburgh since moving over three years ago!

This is the first time we have visited this year and we have been pleasantly surprised. We started off with a crisp pint of Aspalls, clean lines and glasses. Delicious. Then we weighed up where to move to for food. Spotted the new menu and could not help ourselves but to test what we felt were the best bits. Absolutely delighted with the Drunken Prawns, Calamari with Pineapple salsa, Ham Hock Terrine, Courgette and Broad Bean, fries and a Chicken Schnitzel. Struggling to pick a favourite but if you judge it by which dishes involved us pushing each other’s fingers away, it would have to be the Calamari. There was definite finger fighting going on. Well worth a visit. Too full to choose other dishes to try, will absolutely return.

Popped in here with my brother in law after a pub crawl around Richmond. I don’t normally like young houses but this was exceptional, great foh great food will be back!

On a recent trip to Richmond my wife Denise and I popped into The Old Ship for a quiet drink and were greeted by very friendly staff who we got chatting to. We looked at the menu and decided to have lunch. The food was excellent, as was the service, so much so we returned the following day for drinks and lunch. Thank you to Gavin and the rest of the staff. Can thoroughly recommend The Old Ship.

One of the best Sunday roasts I've had in London.

Food is what you'd expect in a good quality pub. The best seats in my opinion are on the first floor (one above the ground floor) -- get ones facing down George St. if you can. My only feedback is that it's kind of a small challenge to get a full beer from the ground floor to the first floor (they do have a satellite bar upstairs that theoretically could dispense beers, but which isn't always open). The staff are very friendly and the food is great.

Great place to watch the F1 on a Sunday and very decent Roast!

Feel a little ripped off to be honest. Went for Sunday roast beef. Service was good, food was over priced for a tiny portion. £19.50 for one thin slice of Beef, half a Carrot and two half roast potatoes. Very disappointing. Perhaps the staff should wear Highway Men masks as the 5 of us all felt like we were robbed!!!!!

By far one of the worst Sunday roast that I had in London. £19.50 for the thinnest ONE small slice of beef,half carrot,2 small roast potatoes. Service’s was not great either . We all left ( 5 of us ) really disappointed !!

We were seated in the upstairs dining room, where only one other table was occupied. Result - no atmos! There looked to be space downstairs. You might ask for preference at booking time.

THIS IS THE PLACE FOR A PARTY!! For my birthday, I reserved the upper deck for an evening, and it was GREAT. There was no rental fee, just a minimum spend that was very reasonable. Before the party, the team was excellent at promptly responding to my questions and queries I had. On the night of the event, the team and bar staff were incredibly welcoming, and even joining in on the dancing. They allowed the music to be loud which made the party so much better. If any issues arose, they resolved them immediately. I highly recommend this place for a party; it was amazing!

Have been watching all the Euro games here and it’s been great. It’s things like, being able to book online, great and fast service, air con and fab food, along with a great atmosphere, that is why we keep coming back and back!

Oh dear. We came here after researching places for Sunday roast in Richmond. Very disappointing, I had the beef, it was one single thin slice. I queried the portion size as thought probably a kitchen error, but two of my fellow dinners had same portion size. In response we were told that single slice was correct, they did bring us another single slice to share. They said it was a 200g serve - didn't look like it. The chicken was half a chicken so more generous portion but unfortunately very dry. The mac and cheese side was equally disappointing, very bland and not at all cheesy. Lovely pub but avoid the roast.

I use to come to this pub regularly when at uni 30 years ago!!! I remember it well as a Rugby pub and it used to be to get packed out. Beer selection was always good and that has not changed. It’s a pub that is very old and very famous in Richmond. Right at the top of Richmond high st and just off the Green. Two floors. Lots of tv screens depending on where you sit you get a better view. However, was not expecting the quality of food on offer. Was outstanding. And well priced. You know when they are using too ingredients and care about this part of their offer. We all loved what we ate and know we will be back. A very welcome surprise on the food. No wonder it ranks so highly in a very competitive area for restaurants. Well done The Old Ship! Oh! And finally, everyone we dealt with was polite and very customer focussed. Bar service was quick and easy.

Amazing Sunday Roast! The chicken was extremely tender! As for dessert, we ordered the Bramley Apple crumble, which was one of the best things I’ve ever tried. Splendid!! ❤️

Strolled past and found a seat in a cozy corner right under the football game. Excellent service from Alice, we had burgers (amazing) Mac n cheese, and haddock. The atmosphere was so lovely. One of our favorite experiences in the UK.

We had such a wonderful time at The Ship.. I brought some friends who were visiting London, knowing this was a reliable spot. This was their favorite meal of trip! We had excellent service from Alice, our server. Could not have had a better experience!

Cute intimate place. Came in to watch the Euro on their TVs. The Ploughmans Lunch was okay though the scotch egg was not quite crispy fresh, it was otherwise perfectly done with a runny center. Good sausage roll though the ham and the bread were just okay. The deviled mushrooms were surprisingly delicious and I'd get it again. It's sliced mushrooms in a mustard sauce with a perfect slice of brioche bread.

Loads of history to this place. Being a Monday, it wasn't very busy but a very enjoyable meal and pint.

Best scotch egg in London! Honestly, I’ve had this twice now and it’s just unreal!

My friend and I came in June for a chicken roast and it was quite frankly the best roast we’ve had since living in London. The chicken was really tender and juicy and the whole thing was a really good portion. The manager was really great and the atmosphere was quintessentially British. They also had quite a good outdoor seating area playing the football which was a slay. Can’t recommend enough!

Very rude staff. Mixing cheap drinks in front of us and requested CCTV. Proved they mixed and that’s a scsm. Don’t go there. Scam

I had a very disappointing experience at this establishment. The service was extremely rude. We ordered a specific rum but when the bartender finished the bottle she put a different one instead of getting the same bottle, mixing both rums. When we pointed this out to the waiter, she accused us of lying rather than resolving the issue. We asked to speak with the bar manager, but the situation remained unresolved. This level of disrespect and lack of professionalism is unacceptable. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and improves their service.

Searching for Ramrod and Special in these modern times, I had assumed was doomed to failure after three landlords had told me that Young's had stopped brewing Ramrod. Enter the Old Ship. Chris the barman on tonight gave me the best news ever as.he pointed to the bottles of Ramrod on the shelf. Super happy I am ... Really nice kind barman.

Me along with my 2 colleagues went along to the pub this evening on the 19th of April. We arrived, and although it smelled of smoke and the tables were instantly sticky, we decided to stay and discuss our weekly performances. We ordered a couple of drinks from a frankly unresponsive female bartender, and then left for a cigarette out the front, expecting to return to resume our conversation and endulge in the drinks and hospitality that we had already paid for. When we attempted to come back in, we were met with refusal, and that the pub was ‘shut’ (it was 10:30pm and the pub closes at 12am). When we asked as to why we were refused entry back in to finish our drinks, we were told by a rather kind and sympathetic male security guard who let us in earlier, ‘the owner said no’. Another female security guard completely blanked us in comparison. A more senior member of staff came out and told us to wait 15 minutes outside in the cold so that the owner could come out and ‘speek to us’. After 20 minutes of waiting, no one came to acknowledge us. Peeping through the window, we witnessed the owner, IAN G, talking with bartenders and laughing at us through the window. After waiting for an eternity to simply resume our meeting and drink our drinks, we decided to call the pub via phone to see if we would get a quicker response. We witnessed the manager inside through the window completely ignore our phone call. We were left to conclude that we were discriminated against by the owner, IAN G, as we had no problem minding our own business before we left for a cigarette break. We are a young, yet professional group of 3 that only showed complete and yet yet respect towards the unfortunate pub, & we didn’t deserve such treatment. We left the scene feeling extremely discriminated against, and deflated, with no show from the owner Ian, who refused us entry via his security team, after we paid for the pub’s hospitality and drinks. This feeling was further confirmed when bartenders inside the pub intentionally caught eye contact with us just to laugh at our situation. Overall, the attitude demonstrated by this pub is extremely volatile. After settling in calmly the first time, we were refused entry back in after paying for drinks. Extremely unprofessional and not impressed at all. I would like the owner, Ian, to contact me as soon as possible. Considering our most recent interactions, I will surprised to receive a response as that’s in line with their unprofessionalism. I look forward to an explanation. Pictured are the bartenders who felt it was appropriate to laugh at our situation, aswell as the owner with the manager together in another picture. I would advise to stay away from this pub, unprofessional, smelly, sticky, and discriminatory. Avoid at all costs!

Food was great. I had the pie and mash which was delicious however the side of mac n cheese was seriously lacking its key ingredients. Couldn't taste the cheese whatsoever. Wouldn't recommend that. The rest of the meal was great and saw several other dishes being brought out that also looked yummy. Would highly recommend this pub and restaurant. Dog friendly too

Beautiful sunday roasts. My beef roast and my mum's pork roast were superb. My brother wasn't overly happy with his burger as there was a small portion of fries and nothing else with it. Unfortunately the atmosphere was ruined when they put the football on for a couple of people who then started shouting and kind of ruined our mother's day meal considering there's a pub downstairs and we were upstairs wanting a peaceful meal. They should be considerate to everyone, not just favour a couple of people.

This is one of my favorite pubs in Richmond but I have to mention that the food was very disappointing. Chips arrived cold, burgers were so overcooked they were hard and dry. Burgers and chips were sent back, with another burger issued, same thing, overcooked, hard and dry. The fish was good. Real shame.

Small boozer but we'll worth the visit!!!!!

Popped into The Old Ship for lunch on Sunday. Luckily I'd booked as this pub does tend to get very packed on Sundays. I was shown to my table in the upstairs dining room. There were large TV screens showing Premier League football, but the sound was turned off which was right for a dining area. I ordered The Old Ship Burger and a glass of Valdemoreda Red Wine. The burger arrived nicely presented on a slate, with a basket of skinny fries. The burger was nicely cooked and very flavoursome. Once I'd finished my burger, the staff who were excellent let me stay in the dining area so I could watch the Manchester Derby. The waitress got me a stall from downstairs so I could watch the game in comfort in the corner of the bar area. I then ordered a pint of Youngs Original bitter. A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Great pub grub classics with good ingredients. The fish and chips were great. Nice crispy batter and flaky soft fish. Sausages with the bangers and mash were very girthy and full of flavour. Comfy and vibrant atmosphere.

Nice waiters, good ambient during a premier league match, but they lose 3 stars because: 1) we waited 20 min for our drinks (3 beers and 1 coke) and 90 min (YES, NINETY) for our food after ordering through Young’s On Tap. When we asked the staff kindly told us that after 45 min of waiting we would get a free drink. They told us they were prioritising customers at the dining area and we were at the courtyard. However we felt they could have told us beforehand. 2) when the food finally arrived, much of it was cold and the gravy for the roast was very watery and not very tasty. Some of the drinks were also watery, such as the Coke and some of the beers. 3) the ladies bathroom had one out of two toilets that had loads of toilet paper in it and couldn’t be used, and there was no soap. Overall not a great experience for us. We understand it was a busy day with it being a Sunday and a big PL match, but we expected more for the money we paid for. Hopefully this was just a one-time thing because they were temporarily understaffed.

Okay if you would like a drink, however came in for Sunday lunch. Order taken and paid, took well over an hour to come with explanation that its a small kitchen and many orders. We were not made aware of the wait until I asked regarding our food not turning up (I asked 3 times). Food was ok. Roast dinner better than normal menu. Big shame that pub is not organised with food covers v capacity of the kitchen. Based on the experience, we will not be going back.
