The Old Ship in Richmond upon Thames

The food was delicious! The people that work there are super nice and welcoming!

Having schlepped across Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park (Capital Ring), the choice of somewhere to take a break felt a bit hit and miss. This was that choice and I thought it was great on a sunny mid-afternoon in early March 25. Recommended.

This is our regular pre-rugby pub now. Staff really helpful, food and atmosphere great. Another excellent experience.

Delicious and crispy cider-battered fish and chips, coeliac / gluten free friendly. Could be a bit less greasy, but it was still very good. The curry sauce for dipping was a nice bonus. All others in our group enjoyed their meals too, and our server was chatty and friendly.

Have enjoyed drinks and Sunday Roasts a few times before. However, yesterday we booked a table ordered our food /drinks and were told there might a bit of a wait which we were fine with. Our food arrived more than hour later and I was so disappointed with the chicken roast. The potatoes were extremely dry and overcooked and the chicken was slightly burnt and by that point it was quite obvious the servers were overwhelmed. A real shame as it was always a pleasant experience previously but yesterday's food will stop me from eating here again

Great ambience...plenty of extra seating upstairs ..the menu is very imaginative ....food is well prepared, tasty and there's plenty of it .

The Sunday roast was delicious!

Every 2 years we travel from Edinburgh to London for the Calcutta Cup Rugby match, and always go to the Old Ship for lunch, on our way to Twickenham. There are usually 6 or 7 of us and I book well in advance as it's such a popular place! The staff were welcoming and Callum looked after us very well from start to finish. The food was excellent as usual, with all of us opting for the fish and chips - and we weren't disappointed! Service from Callum was very good, and he kept our drinks coming and our empties all cleared regularly. Great atmosphere too! See you again in 2027.

Had a lovely visit to this pub for lunch with a family friend and my elderly parents. It was exactly what we needed, old school warmth; literally (open fire) as well as the welcome and atmosphere. Perfect selection of classic dishes and delicious rhubarb crumble. Staff were hospitable and patient with my parents. Thank you.

Excellent Sunday roasts (beef, pork, chicken and veggie). Good selection of beers and wine at sensible prices. Great service by well trained staff who were friendly, helpful and efficient. Definitely recommended, book early!

UPDATE February 16/25 Management at Old Ship contacted us and offered to make things right and today we had an amazing Sunday Roast at the Old Ship! Service provided by Callum was amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Most places won’t have even responded but the Management did and we are very impressed! Thank you for a lovely family roast/afternoon! We will be back!! Worst pub experience we have had in 17 years of visiting the UK! Our daughter/SIL travelled from North London to have walk and roast with us yesterday and we were delighted to have a reservation at The Old Ship. When we got seated we were told…”OH no roasts left…NONE not even vegetarian”. But you can order off our mains menu. Now knowing it is 345 now on a beautiful Sunday in Richmond, we decided to stay and order off main menu. Then it came “we actually only have Fish/chips and beef burger left on our mains menu” Two of the four of us cannot eat fish so we had one choice! Meals came and apparently the fish/chips were good. We could continually see people arriving for their reservations and then getting up to leave when everyone found out no food left….. at 4pm! The waitress brought us pudding menu and then announced they only had crumble and ice cream left. We waited over 20 minutes for her to come see if we wanted pudding and she never came! What a waste of money and time. This is not a situation of them being overrun with orders…this is a situation of mismanagement of kitchen/supplies. Pub was half empty. We had been to Old Ship once before for pints/chips and loved the atmosphere . So disappointed. At least management could have done was walk around and speak to customers so your wait staff weren't the only ones taking the heat!!

Truly great place to grab a pint or sit down for dinner. Plenty of places to sit, a great beer selection (as well as wine, cocktails, and liquor), and the food was excellent. The highlight was absolutely the staff, they were truly amazing, both friendly and helpful. Come to Richmond for Ted Lasso but stay for Old Ship.

I love the decor and ambience with the real fire. However, lunch was a bad experience. Firstly, the "order-from-table" app didn't work. When the food came, the "minestrone" soup was barely lukewarm, the bowl was cold. Minestrone is a thick dark soup with pasta, this was a thin pale soup, no pasta. It tasted only of salt. Very poor. The "croquetas" were just 3, dry, burnt with no discernible flavour or bechamel. The calamari were quite good.

Was underwhelmed with the Sunday roast, it was cold and overcooked. Pub itself is lovely and the staff are friendly. The burger isn’t a smashed burger though they call it one.

The Old Ship is a charming pub with a great atmosphere. Some of the staff are warm and welcoming, while others could be more attentive. Unfortunately, the food quality can be hit or miss. On our last visit, we were served a burger that seemed several days old—everything was dry and unappetizing. We mentioned it to the staff, but our concerns were completely ignored, which was disappointing. It’s a shame because we really like The Old Ship and hope they improve their consistency and customer service.

Callum was very professional and welcoming. Great atmosphere. Will be coming again.

We arrived on Sunday around 1pm thinking we had a booking, turns out my Mrs had booked Sunday 2nd of March not February, the member of staff could not have been more accommodating and swiftly arranged us a table. We had the Sunday Roast Medley and it’s was cooked to perfection. They had two fires lit and the atmosphere was perfect. There were a few items missing from the dessert menu which was a shame but it was so good we came back the next day for some more food and the fish and chips was just as good! A personal highlight was the friendly and courteous staff. Looking forward to our next visit.

6 of us dined here for Sunday lunch this past weekend. We all ordered the roast beef along with several sides and were very excited. However, we had to send the food back twice due to it being stone cold. The plates were extremely hot (severs could barely lift the plates) but the food was so cold. The food on the third attempt was still cold, however we all agreed to just eat it as it felt like they were putting it under the grill for a couple of minutes and bringing it back out. Some left the cold veg, some left the potatoes because they’d become chewy. It felt extremely expensive for cold food.

Great pub (which I've been to before) with very nice staff, but this time I thought my food was poor value for money. Three of us had the game pie (£22, not on the online menu) and the portions were all the same. The pie was only about an inch deep and a lot of it was puff pastry crust. I thought I'd just been served the lid of a pie. The serving of mash it sat upon wasn't very large and very light on the cabbage as well.

The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was great. We had dinner upstairs and enjoyed our chat. However, unfortunately, there was no one else. It should be more advertised. Also, my husband's gnocchi had too much oil and he had to ask the staff to take it back. Some of the fees were extracted from the total bill. It is such a pity because I enjoyed my pie last time at this pub and that was the reason I set up the gathering here.

Nice pub to pop into on way out or back which is what we do. We never ate in there we just had drinks.

We held a private party in the upstairs rooms. We had 40+ people for a sit down 3 course dinner. We pre selected the food from the menu and everything came out together, hot, and delicious. The team handled all allergy queries with no issues and ensured they identified those with special orders prior to service. We were able to decorate the rooms with fairy lights and other table decorations to personalise the event and linked to the Bluetooth so we could play our own music. We're a choir so were able to sing our own repertoire of songs. The entire team that helped us with the event were amazing! Tuesday managed our initial booking and gave us great confidence in the venue. She was friendly and hugely accommodating. The chef and kitchen team were fantastic on the night. They produce 40+ three course meals efficiently, and beautiful presented. The bar staff (Callum, Lily and Aobhin) made it very easy for us to relax and enjoy the party we worked hard to organise. They were fun, friendly and helpful. We cannot thank The team enough and can't wait to book our next event at the Old Ship!

Delightful Irish pub and amazing service

Great selection of food and drinks but the staff really made it for me. Super friendly and helpful, didn't get everyone's names but shout out to Callum and Ellen. Will be back for sure.

We sat upstairs and ordered food and drinks via table service. Lovely bar staff. I’d recommend the Featherdrop Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand. Our fish and chips took 45 minutes to arrive and the chips were under cooked. This was not a lunchtime rush as we were there at 3pm. No explanation given. We weren’t asked how was our meal, maybe they knew we wouldn’t give good feedback. Would return for drinks but not food.

Met friends for a long deserved catch up. Was busy and service was a bit on the slow side but this is a lovely pub with a good food menu. Enjoyed the ploughman's sharing board.

Lovely Sunday lunch. Been once before but never sat upstairs. Such a cosy inviting atmosphere from the 0 degrees weather outside. Service was great, especially Callum who looked after us. Food super tasty, the fish pie with extra whitebait and prawns piled on top was delicious. Will definitely be coming back, a great local spot in Richmond.

We came with 40 others to a party in the upstairs rooms and the food was fabulous. Great service, the staff were all fun and looked after us really well. The food was served hot which is amazing with 40 covers all coming out at once. Will highly recommend.

We were upstairs and had some drinks and food. The fish and chips were great, other things were a bit meh. But what really was great was the service. Callum was our server and he did an absolutely fantastic job.

as an ex pat living in Australia, this place gave me a good dose of everything I miss about home, great pub atmosphere, friendly service and a fabulous Sunday roast. Marvellous.

We visited with our young children on a Sunday morning. It was accessible with a pram. The customer service was beyond what we expected. The staff is hospitable and understanding. They even helped us with cleaning the pram food tray. The fish and chips were very good.

This place was really busy but they offered us a table anyway. Great meal and great service from Lily. Definitely come back.

Really nice pub. Good size with a lot of variety of seating downstairs. I managed to get a booth by the fire and it was lovely. The staff were super friendly and the atmosphere in the pub was generally good. It feels like a very classic pub, so nice to stop in if you're in the area.

The pub downstairs is super cosy. Upstairs where the dining room is was a bit clinical (no music/v bright lighting). They were also v understaffed when we went so everyone in our room waited a long time to be served/eating (prob 50 min wait for food). Roast was pretty good. Tight on the gravy. Yorkshire overcooked. Good amount of chicken. Needed a bit of greenery on there. Roast potatoes defo reheated. Fish and chips v good, fresh fish, loaaads of chips and good dip selection. Would come back but try and eat downstairs if possible? Would be 4* if service was better.

We are group of 30 people who came for our Christmas lunch yesterday. The food and customer service was excellent. Many thanks to Ian and his team who went out of their way to make it a most enjoyable day for everyone. We will be back again next year.

*Edit* I only just saw the response from the restaurant now (better late than never) and it was so lovely that I had to edit my rating and give them more stars. We all have bad days, and even though I've never been back since, I hope they have improved :) Original review: This place should be called Old Shipwreck! Only got our food after 1 hour and 20 mins and the waiters were useless and rude. All the people around us who came 30 mins after us have had their food so they clearly forgot about us. When the food finally arrived we had the worst burgers ever! The filling was burnt, the bread was rock solid, the fries were thin and just meh, and the whole dish was barely warm, which is the most surprising bit! They said they just got a new chef so I don’t know what it was like before but we certainly won’t be returning here again.

Callum was such a fantastic host and server. He accommodated our fussy eaters and was really friendly throughout. It was a busy service and he kept us updated on the progress of our order.

Food is what you'd expect in a good quality pub. The best seats in my opinion are on the first floor (one above the ground floor) -- get ones facing down George St. if you can. My only feedback is that it's kind of a small challenge to get a full beer from the ground floor to the first floor (they do have a satellite bar upstairs that can dispense beers, but which isn't always open). The staff are very friendly and the food is great.

A nice pub for either lunch or evening drinks and for pre lunch drinks on match days at Twickenham. We didn't eat on this occasion but the food did look good.

Good food at a reasonable price. Atmosphere was good as it was very busy. Good spot for a lively Sunday lunch, and not too far from Twickenham stadium.

Super busy at lunch time on Sunday so either go early or plan to have a late lunch. The pub has a great warm and inviting atmosphere and if you don’t eat during their busy hours, no one rushes you to leave (except other customers). I enjoyed the half chicken Sunday roast although the potatoes were too dry and crispy. Baked trout with orzo was delicious and is recommended.

I liked the typical decor of this pub, but the musty smell is quite unpleasant when you enter. The upstairs offers a completely different atmosphere: bright and warm. Ordering and service was long but still very pleasant. The drinks and food were average, but not memorable. I still keep this address which can be renewed without reservation.

Watched the rugby and it was a great atmosphere as per usual! Easy to book, lots of TVs for sport and great food. The service is amazing, such lovely and friendly staff! Highly recommend!!

Atmosphere is great and staff are really nice. However, our third pint of Guinness was poured incorrectly (all in one go, like a lager) and when I pointed this out, the staff member replied “yeah I know, we do this when we’re busy”. So, only feedback is always ensure Guinness poured properly as, although the pub was full, actually only one other person was waiting to be served.

What a quaint and lovely old pub! A friend and I chose to have lunch and watch one of the Autumn International rugby games there. I had a prompt response to my email requesting a table for 2 and was asked if we would be there for the rugby to ensure a good seat. Our position was perfect and the Venison and Pheasant pie with mash & gravy etc was excellent! The bar staff were friendly too. 5/5*s

Excellent Sunday roast and lovely seating area upstairs, a young boy named Callum served us who was such a gentleman and very attentive to us. this was our first time here so will definitely be coming back!!

Service was slow. My drink arrived about ten minutes after the others'. At 2.05pm we were asked to vacate the table by 2.15pm (we had booked for 12 noon until 2pm)and yet the reason we were still there was the slow service. No apology. It then took a further ten minutes for us to pay our bill. Earlier, I asked for a single scoop of ice cream but three were served up. Earlier still, I had fish pie. Apart from what I think were three battered whitebait and four small prawns I could find no other fish in a mass of mashed potato. Easily the worst fish pie I've ever had. One of us asked for apple crumble but was told it would take half an hour. When I got home and checked my email I found one timed at 12.30pm saying that our booking was now for 12.45pm! Altogether a very bad experience. It seems that there was a lack of effective management. And if you like fish pie, try the one at The Marlborough. It's very good. Claude Table 24 October 13.

Wow what a Sunday service the best Sunday dinner I’ve had in a while, brilliant atmosphere and all the staff are so friendly! Callum went above and beyond for us and the kids it didn’t go unnoticed I will be coming back.

Held my daughters 13th birthday party in the semi- private space upstairs. Ian and Tuesday made the whole experience incredible for her and her friends. From creativity of her mocktails to the most attentive team, we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you all so much!
