The Old Ship in Maldon

Comfortable surroundings, friendly and helpful staff, quick service, nice beer, and food was excellent in quality and quantity, and great choices on the menu. Perhaps some of the less flattering reviews were from visits at busier times, I'll admit they were not exceedingly busy when we were there.

Ordered haddock and chips it was obviously all frozen food and my fish was not cooked sufficiently. I won’t be going again.

Been here a few times lately. I usually have scampi which is fine. Wife and friend had beef and veg lasagne and both said it was lovely. The crumble for dessert is extremely bad for your waistline, but, unlike some I've had, you get loads of 'crumbly' crumble, instead of the the sparse, soggy offerings in some establishments.

Grotty place ,I think it only keeps going because of it's location I don't think the toilets have been decorated for 20 years and there is no excuse for how dirty they were and thus was before mid day Wouldn't eat here as a peep into kitchen showed how high their standards are Ok for a drink but nothing else Could be an absolute gold mine with the right people running it

Great spot to watch boats go by. Outside tables by the lock. Good food,large portions. The fish finger baguette was great.

Had a sausage baguette with cheesy chips. Sausages very poor quality very little meat mostly other ingredients. Chips not good either very greasy. Would not eat their again

Sour faced staff that treat you like you’re an inconvenience. Food order was wrong, but they argued it and said we got it wrong. Food ‘ok’ but had better in a fast food chain. Not particularly clean and smelt fusty

Polite staff, but that is about the only good point. I chose chicken fillet burger from the 'specials' board, there was nothing special about it at all... Stale bun, rubbish quality ingredients, the supposedly chicken fillet was very budget, tiny, grey and tasteless... Not sure if £12.50 is cheap these days, but certainly didn't feel like value for money. Why can't you wipe the tables with a clean cloth??? We tried different tables trying to find one we didn't stick to, they were disgusting. Such a shame because it could be so much better...

We always come here for a drink and something to eat and are always very pleased with the service and food EXCELLENT we took all our family today and the only problem is they need to get some parasols for the outside seating they have the bases under the benches as it was most uncomfortable and we wasn’t the only ones to moan about it we will be back but not on a day like today shame cos it is a lovely place to chill !! Please get some for tables outside

I am writing this review on behalf of my parents. They are both in the 80s and when they visited his pub they asked if they could have a smaller meals. staff said yes no problem but when the meal arrived it was obviously one meal to be split. They had no problem with this but the staff simply gave them an empty plate and left them to have to try and decant the food theirself.£16 for what looked like a shop bought pie and chips .They were very embarrassed and will not be returning they also said the pub was dirty and run down. Such a shame because this used to be a great place to be

Staff more interested in chatting to each other than serving. Tables sticky and greasy. When one party left girl behind bar straightened chairs but made no attempt to clean or wipe table. No good habits learned hear from Covid! A friend ignored my advice and tried to call in there on the Friday night of the Jubilee bank holiday to find that they were already closed - at 7.30!! Luckily the Jolly Sailor was doing its usual brisk trade.

Great place, very friendly staff. Nice food and drinks. Served to table, outside Selection of beers Lovely venue sat out by lock. Will be back

Had a roast beef it was superb veg cooked to perfection beef melted in my mouth plenty of it ate every bit and all I can say is Mmmmmmm

My first review and normally I do not like complaining. The young lady behind bar was very busy and working alone, I patiently waited for service. When serving me she was pouring the wrong beer and I corrected her when it came to my attention. She responded in a raised and aggravated voice “ it was a mistake, not a big issue, if you did not have your mask on I probably would have heard you!”. She was unnecessarily rude to the extreme with no care for customer service. The long wait was not an issue for me - the rudeness was!

Friendly, Good food, Dog friendly, kind helpful staff. Can get a little busy and loud. Lovely views from tables.

popped in here for a swift pint. nice and friendly pub both locals and staff. place was filthy dirty and are looking for staff. views were lovely. this is a dog friendly place.

If purple haired bar staff is really to your taste, then this is just the right place for you.Filthy tables that are never cleared by said bar staff is however inexcusable. Likewise the filthy dirty toilets which never get cleaned, the menus which are sticky and stained.Sandwiches priced at £8.00 are tasteless. Chips dried up and hard.
