Visited this place for lunch on the way home from a shopping trip, the first thing we noticed were that the two ladies serving both had very untidy unkempt hair, none of them were wearing any sort of headwear to keep their hair off their faces, the welcome wasn't very warm either, the pies were slightly overdone but hot and the mash was just warm, the pies did not have a lot of flavour to them but there was a noticeable twang to them, possibly mixed herbs not quite sure, the meal was passable but doubt that we would eat there again, the hygiene issue needs to be addressed as we also noticed that the staff were also dragging big bags if potatoes around in between serving although they did put on a a pair of rubber gloves to do this but I doubt they washed their hands after taking the gloves off.

I’m sorry to say this was the worst pie n mash I’ve ever had. The portion of mash was tiny compared to other places I’ve been. Like others have said the small amount of mince in the pie was thick and heavily seasoned with something like oxo and slightly spicy which is at odds with traditional pie n mash. The liquor was way too thick and more like parsley sauce rather than proper liquor. Whoever makes this definitely doesn’t do it in the traditional east end way. It was quite expensive too. We had two pies but had to order five mash as one portion only equalled just over a tablespoon and two liquors. This came to £15. I wouldn’t mind paying that if it had been nice but unfortunately it wasn’t.

Shocking!! Two thirds the size of the P&M I'm used to and a lot more expensive!! I really dont know what to say or where to start. I've never experienced P&M like this before and I'm really at a loss. I'd like to say that I'm a fair judge. Born and Bred in the heart of East London, surrounded by all the big boys in the P&M industry. Please believe me when I say I'm not biased, I believe we should support all our P&M shops, but this place has just left me flabbergasted. If the local folk are happy with the food that is served up here, then all well and good, but if like me, you love your traditional Pie and Mash, drive past and stop at the Wimpey. The mince inside the pies are really dark and spicy (very strange, with 3 small scoops of mash and a strange looking liquor) I hate to put any P&M shop down, but this really doesn't deserve a rating (although I have given 2 for the happy girl behind the counter) Looking in from the outside, it appears that the owners really aren't bothered what people think, and the place was empty, although in fairness, I was there around 11.30am, but where I come from the shops are busy then!! If you feel this review isn't warranted, please go and try for yourself!!!

Came here recently as fancied pie and mash but had not had any for a while. We read the mixed reviews and thought we would try it for ourselves. On first impressions the shop is very run down and not very clean. Two young girls running it who were clearly not interested. We ordered two double pie and mash and liquor. I can only say that this is the worst pie and mash I have ever had. I agree with others that the liquor is more like water, Liquor should be thick and green, this resembled wallpaper paste only not as thick and probably had the same taste. The mash was completely tasteless and sloppy. The pies had a dark brown minced meat filling which looked like it was held together with thick gravy granules. The taste was awful, tasted like some sort of spice was in the pies. Not traditional at all. Definitely give this place a miss. There is a reason this place is never busy.

Wasn't expecting to see a Pie & Mash shop in Maldon, so very happy when I came across this. Looks & feels like a nice old fashioned London Pie & Mash shop with exactly the sort of menu you'd expect to see in one too. I don't get a chance to have stewed eels too often these days, so it definitely a portion of stewed eels, liquor & mash for me. They were just the job, absolutely lovely. Friendly service too. Best advice I can give is to stay at home and have a sandwich. The pie was vile with meat that had so much browning or stock cubes added it was nearly black and had a bitter after taste the pastry was tasteless not like the normal pies from a proper pie and mash shop. Had to ask for chilli vinegar so not sure if the shop only has one bottle in the shop as opposed to a bottle per table. the liquor was thin and watery with no taste at all

Visited Maldon for the day and wanted to try out the pie and mash shop. I am from Hackney in London and as a child used to regular love pie and mash from Cookes in Broadway market with the old man as a kid, so was a bit of a nostalgic experience. With the decline of old pie and mash shops since the 90's, I am really pleased to see a resurgence in this traditional cockney cuisine. It was nice to see a proper shop, rather than a cafe trying to include pie and mash as a bit of a vintage menu curiosity.

Having lived in East Ham for 15 years I've ate my fair share of pie & mash and have to say this was very good. The pies were well filled if a little small and a doughy pastry, not unlike the ones from Nathans next to the Boleyn ground. The liquor was a dark green with a real taste of parsley, Just like Robins on East Ham high street (r.i.p.).This is how I like it, not wishy washy or alternately thick and gloopy & pale. The eels were lovely and creamy but cut smaller than I would have liked.Prices were fair, besides it's harder to find any pie & mash shops these days let alone ones as good as this.Hopefully my mate will be going to Essex soon otherwise I'll have to rely on the red cross for my next food parcel.

I found this pie n mash shop a few years ago and now make a point of visiting every time I'm in the area. Pie, mash, liquor & eels all very good but not cheap (not expensive either). We also always take away pies & liquor (& sometimes jellied eels).Well worth a visit.

Each time i come back home to Blighty i have Pie and Mash at least once, over the past few years however, the number of pie shops have been dwindling, they are getting harder and harder to find. Last week though i heard of one in Maldon, Essex. We decided to give it a try, the place was authentic and the food tasted just like the Pie and Mash shop in West Ham Lane, although the pies did seem to be a little smaller as another person here mentioned, but no problem, have more pies and you get the same amount. If your a Pie and Mash fan, i think it was worth the drive and i would recommend it.

Visited for Pie 'n' Mash with my partner whilst visiting Maldon for the day, after it was recommended to me by a work colleague and we really enjoyed our eats.We both had 2 pies and 1 mash and I opted to have gravy with mine and my partner had liquor and both meals were very tasty. The pies were well filled and the mash lovely and creamy. We washed it down with a nice cup of tea and it was the perfect lunch on a cold November day.Service was very efficient and friendly, we will be visiting again in the very near future.

Although the pies have shrunk over the years this cuisine is just how I used to have every Saturday when I was young in east ham behind the west ham football ground with the vinegar and liqueur seems to be of the same recipe as Nathan's of east ham.all in all with great surroundings and tastes you cannot fault this pie and mash shop is a must to try!

Let me start by saying that I love pie & mash! Since I've moved to the area I've eaten here several times and very much enjoyed the experience. On a cold day when you're hungry, there's nothing better than double pie, double mash, liquor, white pepper, vinegar and a mug of tea! They also have newspapers to read, so it's a nice place to be.By the way, I've also used their take away service - very good indeed.

Never thought I would like this as still remember lumpy mash from the Pie n Eel shop in Waterloo, close to where I worked in the 1970's. I always enjoyed the pies so I decided to give my local a try and was very impressed. They make their own pies and mash daily, so It's always fresh and tastes homemade. Portions are just the right size and the atmosphere in the quaint canteen style shop is just how a Pie and Mash shop should be. I will be back.

If you're a fan of Pie and Mash (and liquor) you should give this place a try. It's not like it used to be at Manzes in Chapel Market or Exmouth Market, but it's as good as you'll find nowadays. The pies seem to be smaller than I remember (or maybe I've just got bigger), but they're good, and the eels are very tasty. The place is spotlessly clean. Give it a try.

Took my son in here last week he's 7 and fussy !!! I live local to Maldon but have never bothered before, allways get dragged to Mcdonald's by the lad! However decided to check out the Pie and Mash and why did'nt i sooner !!?Price's were very reasonable , service was great and the food was spot on , could'nt persuade my son to have pie and mash but he had sausage and chips and couldnt get enough of it and a big bowl of icecream for afters, he was a very happy boy !!! Loved the whole atmosphere very traditional the pictures around the place were great !!! Was'nt sure how the place would be on cleanlyness but cant complain there either was VERY clean no dirty cuttlery or glasses unlike some of the places ive been to !!! Both the girls working in there while i was there were friendly and efficient , it was quiet busy aswell , looked like they had it all under control and were both still smiling !!! The Pie and mash was great really tasty and filling, although i did'nt try the liquor, but i will be next time !!!Will definatly be back !!!

A clean restaurant, but a poor attempt at true pie and mash. Pies too spicy, liquer to green, would not go again. For true pie and mash try Walton, it,s as near as east end pie and mash as you can get.

Went out to Maldon for the day with our Grandson...saw this pie and mash shop and really fancied it. Although restaurant was clean and had all the pics on the walls of all the old east end pie shops..dont be fooled..this was the worst pie and mash ever. The pie was tiny with only about a spoonful of meat in it. Mash was instant and the liquer was awful. Also asked for sausage and chips for my Grandson which came up with burnt sausage and raw chips. I think they have a cheek to call it pie and mash and it was 4 quid for a very small portion. I was bought up on pie and mash, being from the east end. I definately wont be going back to Maldon Pie shop ever again.

Visited yesterday whilst in Maldon for the first time.We have been eating pie and mash since we were young children.Every Saturday, we went to manzes in walthamstow High Street.Lovely clean shop in Maldon so first impressions were good!We took away Pies and liquor so can not comment on the mash, I alwayscook my own because prefer fresh rather than reheated.Price rather steep although I know pie and mash is no longer a cheap meal any more.£9.90p for two large pies and one small pie plus largish liquor.Pies were very meaty but they resembled home made mince rather than authentic pie shoptype. Gravy is usually thinner which keeps the pie moist. Pastry a good effort but not quiteright. uneven browning on top Liquor was 100% , very impressed but pie let down the experience.Shame because we need pie and mash to continue.Sorry, really did want to like it but thought you might appreciate a honest view. Also more expensive than London for the same items.Did not think it was good value for money.Best pie and mash cooks's Hoxton.

Wasn't really impressed to be honest. We went last Saturday, the waitress got our order wrong so we had to wait ages for our food whilst the chef cooked a pie from scratch which we didn't want because she'd got it wrong. There were no vegetable pies for my vegetarian husband and I thought the portions for the adults were quite small. Such a shame as I was really looking forward to it!

And I mean 1st class! 7 of us were seated and served within 10 minutes notice that we were coming! Very good service, polite staff. We were all really pleased with our meals especially the cauliflower cheese and tasty gravy. Will return for sure! Geoff Grove

Great staff, good food and very dog friendly pub, so friendly in fact the furry customers have their own menu. We have been a few times and will continue to come back.
