Had the unfortunate experience of stopping for lunch in the Anchor... what a mistake! The staff were rude and unwelcoming! Would have expected some decent fresh fish right by the quayside... but not the case. Badly overcooked fish... with a bizarre prawn cocktail on a plate with burnt scampi... probably from the freezer section of Iceland... a pathetic fillet of something purporting to be sea bass... and some fried white fish... and a side serving of greasy chips... flat lime and soda... altogether amongst one of the worst pub meals I've eaten in a long while. AVOID!!

Service was friendly and efficient but no frills - pay as you go along, find your own cutlery etc..... but not surprising when you think they must be so busy in season! Stopped here for lunch after a nice stroll along the front. The staff were very pleasant and service was quick. We all had either Baguettes or Panini's which we all lovely and sufficiently filled, my only let down were the chips that were extremely greasy, as i bit into them i could feel the fat oozing out so i couldn't eat them, apart from that everything else was good. I didn't actually have a dessert but i saw a few come out and they did look rather tasty.

Ordered 2 portions of fish and chips. After paying for it we heard other customers saying it was overcooked and inedible. We thought (or hoped) that they were talking about somewhere else. Sadly no. After a long wait 2 pieces of dark brown cod arrived. The large piece of gristle in the middle of one of them was obviously an added bonus and was not advertised on the menu. Avoid at all costs!

I will start with the positives, arrived for a 2 night stay. Excellent location and lovely views across the estuary. Tha's the positives! Was greeted almost immediately by a young man behind the door (there is no reception to check in - although there are only 3 rooms so probably doesn't warrant it). Given keys and shown to room. We were in room 1. The approach to the room was via a step staircase. There was a very noticeable musty smell leading up to the room and a handrail that felt sticky to the touch. We were asked if we wanted breakfast in the morning, to which we replied yes and was told that this would be a full English in the dining room at 8.30am (no other choice of cooked breakfast and no alternative time), alternatively we were told that we could help ourselves to cereals (small boxes of Kellog's cornflakes) and yoghurts from the fridge at the end of the corridor outside the rooms. The room was of a fair size and had a four poster bed and a lovely view across the estuary. Once inside the room it was obvious that there were problems. The website states that this is a refurbished hotel - it clearly isn't. The window panes were in dire need of a paint job and windows in need of a clean. There were stains/marks on the wallpaper and paper peeling off the walls. The furniture was very old and of poor standard and the paintwork was grubby and looked as though it had been painted over numerous times and the carpet was in need of replacing. There were 2 tables in the room which were obviously brought up from the dining room as they had numbers on them. There were tea and coffee making facilities but no spoons. Although there was a lovely view people could see right into the room and as there were no blinds or net curtains we had to pull the somewhat flimsy curtains to stop people from looking in which wasn't ideal. The following morning we attempted to have a shower (after about 5 minutes trying to get it to a reasonable temperature) the flow was incredibly poor and took ages to wash the soap out of my hair. We then went down to breakfast to find a lady mopping and hovering the floors. We were greeted by a pleasant gentleman (I assumed the owner) and offered a full English. This was accompanied by tea and coffee, orange juice and toast. However, there was a dog which continuously barked, with the owners telling it to shut up every other minute ( I am not sure if the dog was in the kitchen or not). The breakfast was enjoyable on the first morning. However, I'm afraid the same could not be said about the second morning. The sausages had clearly been reheated and were totally inedible and the toast was hard and cold as though it had been standing around for ages. The breakfast was presented within 5 minutes of us sitting down I can only assume that it had been heated up in the microwave. The pub is a lovely old building with pleasant views and well located. Unfortunately it lacks some well needed TLC. Will not be returning.

Arrived on time and the barperson, there is no reception, was very friendly and after a short preamble showed us to our room. It was a family room, no four poster as shown on the website. It looked acceptable, not one that had recently been refurbished though. Dated I would say. We had a very good afternoon around the area and returned to the Anchor Hotel for an evening meal. As we were staying I asked if I could have a 'tab' for food and drink purchases. A resounding NO from the barman, so I paid in cash, took our drinks to the table to peruse the menu. Absolutely nothing special, the usual off the shelf bought in and heat up stuff. Cordon bleu if was not, neither was there a ''specials board' either. Now due to health issues my wife only drinks spirits with a particular brand of Scottish soft drink, she had no sooner filled her drink, at no cheap price either, when the bar manager came out and remonstrated belligerently that this was NOT ALLOWED. So no tab and now no own use of a 75p can of soft drink which they didn't sell. Words were exchanged, I had paid £50 for basically a very poor imitation of a room, no tab and no soft drink allowed. This was no friendly jolly bar manager but a rather grumpy individual in charge of a rather very run down establishment alleging to be a hotel. We left. I was prepared to spend out for a meal and more drinks but due to the attitude of said bar manager we left and did not even stay for the night I had paid for. They have a wonderful website extolling the virtues of staying at this quayside location. Frankly after the introduction to Burnham hospitality that we received I would give The Anchor Hotel a very wide berth and use another venue.

Booked a room last minute on the day as found I was going to be in the area for the night. Paid £40 for the family room, it’s not worth more than that. Friendly young lady greeted me eventually after serving 4 lots of people at the bar, wasn’t even acknowledged even though it was obvious I was looking to check in. Keys were explained and shown to the room. I mentioned I had to leave before breakfast time and was offered cereals and milk left in fridge outside my door, which I accepted. The room is to rear of pub so catches all the noise of the beer garden and smokers. A fight broke out between two young men just as I had fallen asleep so was woken by the ensuing pandemonium. Shower head needed descaling, cubicle could have done with a big squirt of mild cleaner but plenty of toiletries available. One bedside table lamp had a bulb out. window frames grubby. Bar was full of young men playing pool and sport Tv, not my kind of place but it was a comfy bed for the night

Just came back from a meal at The Anchor. The food was more like Greasy Joes Cafe than a Hotel/Pub meal. My husband and I ordered a Combo Sharer with chips and baguette for our main meal. The menu said breaded chicken goujon, and breaded mushrooms both of which were thickly covered in batter. The onion rings and chips chips tasted like they were deep fried in old oil and the grease came out as you bit into them. Disgusting.

Evening visit, we ordered two bottles of beer, and I expressed it would be fine without a glass. The landlady informed me 'we only serve it in glasses, we're that sort of place', in a tone that felt quite condescending. I accepted the drinks in glasses. I returned to the bar to order two steak sandwiches and chips. I politely asked if one could be medium and the other well done. Given my friend did not like beef red so much. The landlady told that was not possible, I asked if one could be cooked just that bit longer than the other one because of my friends preference, where I received a cold stare and was informed, and I quote verbatim, "You can't just come in here and get what you want you know, in here, you have what we give you". I seriously had to bite my tongue. I wish I hadn't.

We stopped in here for lunch on our day-trip in to Burnham-on-Crouch as it seemed one of the quieter place, and it seems like it was quiet for good reason. It took a long time to get served due to another table complaining and one of the staff forgetting someone else's order. The drink selection was surprisingly small for a pub and the food we had was, at best, average. Probably a good place to stop for a quick pint on a quiet day and i'll give them the benefit of the doubt as we visited during Burnham week which is probably the busiest time for them.

When it eventually arrived, my roast pork consisted of a lump of fat & gristle (I suspect it was belly pork), the roast potatoes were a lump of solid grease, vegetables barely warm. A stunning view in the morning across the crouch. An excellent breakfast for guests only. The beds were very comfortable but the hot tap in the bathroom could not be turned on and no heating in the bathroom, so a bit chilly first thing in the morning. The byielding is old an full of character or bedroom floor slope. The bar serves a selection of real ales and the ones I had were great. The place has a 5 star rating for food hygiene. My friend and I had come to Burnham for a walk and had an overwhelming desire for Sunday Lunch and as luck would have the Anchor had it on the menu for £7.95 .We duly ordered Roast Beef. The whole meal was hugely overcooked - carrot's were practically falling about, the mashed swede was like baby food, broccoli had lost much of its colour and it was thrown on top of cauliflower cheese. The beef was over cooked and the potatoes tasted reheated - the only averagely good thing was the horseradish sauce.I barely touched mine but the waitress made not effort to find out why I had left it.

Had the beer battered fish and chips here recently. The fish was undercooked and watery as it was probably frozen when it was fried. My uncle, aged 96, wanted to revisit Burnham on Crouch. We'd been there around 1952 when he helped my father, a master carpenter, to refit Errol Flynn's yacht The North Wind, which was moored there. We chose The Anchor Hotel because it was on the Quay itself. The rooms were spotless and comfortable. The staff were first class, really friendly, helpful and efficient. The weather was perfect: warm and sunny so we sat outside watching the many small boats on the Crouch. The staff were constantly picking up empty glasses and bottles and keeping the place neat and tidy. The evening meal and breakfast were served promptly and were delicious. We had tea served outside in the morning. My stud earring fell on to the floor. when we were having breakfast inside. I found it easily because the floor was so clean. When I ran my hand over the floor there wasn't even any dust! I highly recommend this hotel. We intend to return later this year.

Stopped in for lunch - the hand battered fish was beautiful! Quaint and traditional, with views over the estuary. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended.

The order for food was served within ten minutes, drink orders at the bar just a normal wait. Coffee ordered at 2.30 pa still hadn't been served at 2.50pm. Asked waitress to remind the bar staff, after a further 5 minutes no coffee. Went to the bar asked one of the staff to pour two coffees he refused as someone else was dealing with it. Eventually some 35 minutes after being ordered I was served with two coffee's.Moral of the story don't order anything other than alcohol or you could lose the will to life waiting.

My father, husband and I popped in today for a few drinks, after enjoying a walk through the town, while holidaying in Steeply Bay.We asked the young lady if she could recommend places we could visit while we are in the area and she recommended the old fashioned cinema, which we visited, definitely worth a visit and we asked about other towns and meals for the evening too, which she kindly gave us more great and helpful recommendations. This is the sort of place we would come back to for lunch and a drink, knowing how helpful and friendly the staff are here.

Arrived at the tail-end of lunchtime to find that most of the popular items on the menu were unavailable. So arrive here early. Very reasonably priced menu, edible food and very reasonably priced wine by the glass. Ordinary pub food, very good value in a very lovely location.Worth a visit

The location and staff here are really nice. I was looking forward to Sunday lunch. You get a lot of food for your money, but it's piled onto the plate so if you do not want coliflower cheese you need to eat around it. The Yorkshire where thumpy and under done and the gravy was very thick and was possibly made from granules. The beef was so overcooked it was very dry.If they cook the beef for about an hour less, provide the veg in separate serving dishes and rethink the gravy and Yorkshire they will do well.

We Stayed here on Good Friday for two nights. The first night we were greeted by Clive the landlord who looked after us very well and all the staff we met over our two day stay were pleasant and helpful. Its a locals pub which offers well cared for Real Ales and a good selection of lagers and ciders. Its one of three pubs directly on the Quay within 60 yards of each other, all offering decent beers and food.We ate on the first night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The Anchor offers typical pub grub which during our stay was fresh, well cooked and perfectly fine at a reasonable price and generous portions. Breakfast’s were much the same, fresh, hot and perfectly fine. This is not a fine dining experience, there’s a restaurant in town for that at a price to match but The Anchor offers decent pub grub at a reasonable price. The room (we had the family room with a double bed and single bed), was well laid out, clean and well presented. Getting two nights B&B including full English breakfast right on the Quay for £108 (Expedia) is excellent value for Burnham on Crouch, particularly during the Easter weekend. Having seen previous reviews which have not been so complimentary I feel I have to defend The Anchor a little as an excellent value place to stay. Accepting that your staying above a popular local pub which comes hand in hand with the noise from its customers until closing time (I think its 11pm). If you want five star, go elsewhere but if you want simple, clean value for money go to The Anchor. On a final note, as a motorcyclist there are considerations during travel that are important to us. Firstly The Anchor backs onto probably the best car park in the town and offers a safe place to park the bike which I could see from our room. Secondly, motorcyclists seem very welcome in the town as a whole, there's an event called the Burnham Bends every Sunday which is a popular motorcycle meet.I can definitely recommend a visit to Burnham on Crouch and certainly recommend The Anchor.

We ate here on an Easter weekend after visiting the town. It's a creaky waterfront pub, when we were there the wind was particularly strong and the sign swinging back and forth outside and the door crashing open when a new patron entered added to the feeling. And the food matches that frankly. This isn't gastro chic right?4 of us ate - 2 adults, 2 kids - for £30. And the food was ok, my lasagne had been a bit mullered in the microwave but I've had worse for sure. Same for the kid's chicken goujons. Just set your expectations at cheap/average and it's fine.

As far as location goes for the area it's good. But that's where the positives end. Seems to have gone unloved by owners, not clean and only ok. Ordered a bottle beer which came from the fridge but was room temperature and served to me as such. On picking it up I asked if I could have a cold one rather and barman politely obliged but replacement was only marginally better. Staff polite and friendly and some regulars seemed to be in there. Not a place to set as a destination for yourself. Won't be returning.

We had a late lunch here by default, everywhere else we had tried had closed their kitchen. There was a really strange, damp smell in the dining area - put decided to put this to one side as there weren't any other options. My husband had fish & chips, served with peas - fish wasn't great, a very grey fish and overcooked beer batter - but chips hit the spot. I had lasagna and it was really lovely - cooked and served in its individual dish, lots of cheese on top and came with large side salad & 2 slices of garlic bread. Really tasty, using verde pasta sheets, and for just £7.45 it was great value. For pub grub, overall food was average - brought down by the fish, had that been better the rating would have been very good.

Visited the Anchor couple of weeks before and had a snack lunch which was very nice. We were looking for somewhere to take the family after Christmas for a family meal so booked for the Monday 28th December for a table for 13. Arrived on time and had a round of drinks before ordering meals. Tried to order but several meals were not available as sold out, I feel that the guy taking our order was very embarrassed, finally ordered our food and then had to wait 45 minutes to receive them. Food was okay, not outstanding but okay.I feel that the restaurant and the bar was very under staffed. All the staff were very friendly and the meals were reasonably priced although not that good.A lot of customers came in but when told of the wait for food left to go elsewhere.Would possibly return for a snack lunch but don't think I would book to take the family again.Great shame as lovely Inn in a great position.

Just a one night stopover, but a really great experience, arrived just after lunchtime, checked in to a perfectly adequate en suite room, the floor is a little quirky, with a gentle slope that makes you think that you have had a glass or two too many when getting out of the bed, but you soon get used to this and it does not detract from a good nights sleep, and after all the place is 500 years old. Room was perfectly clean and had all you need. We ate a snack at the bar for lunch which was great and nicely presented. breakfast was a delight with juice, coffee. croissants, toast and a freshly cooked full English with quality ingredients. The management and staff could not have been more pleasant or attentive. Full marks all round

Warm, welcoming inn dating back to the 17th century. The pub has a relatively good selection of beers, and has the local Crouch Valley ale, Brewers Gold, on tap.The pub is split into four areas, all with comfortable seating, and the walls adorned with interesting antiques. The locals are always pretty warm and welcoming, and, whilst I haven't yet eaten here, it appears the restaurant has a very good reputation (although looks a little on the pricey side).Perfect place for a pint and a snack on a winter walk along on the waterfront.

Out of all the places to eat in Burnham on Crouch we made the mistake of choosing The Anchor for Sunday lunch. That was the first let down - they don't serve a Sunday roast. Being hungry we decided not to go elsewhere and chose Hunters Chicken and Steak and Ale Pie - both of which were disgusting. The chicken was rock hard having been microwaved within an inch of it's life to heat the BBQ sauce. The Steak in the pie was more like the leftovers of an overcooked beef stew, yes it's nice to have meat that's tender but not cooked to a pulp. When the plates were collected we were asked if the meal was OK and despite explaining all of the above we received a half hearted apology but no offer of a refund or coffee - nothing, despite the fact that my meal was only half eaten. During the meal someone decided to light the fire which stunk the pub out and meant the door was left open to let the smoke out - not great when you're sitting in a draught. As we left none of the bar staff said goodbye or thank you. Over all not a good experience and we certainly won't be returning.

Visiting Burnham on a sunny Sunday, we tried this place for a light lunch. The place was crowded but we managed to bag a table. We ordered a burger and a jacket potato which arrived promptly at the table. The burger was tasty but a little insubstantial, the spud was nice and quite a generous portion.Prices were very reasonable and service was efficient. All in all, a fairly cheap and cheerful lunch !

Took the Mrs here for lunch 15th August 2015. Very nice and sunny day chilling at the riverside. The place was clean and tidy and the spot of lunch that we had was also decent. I stayed at this place about 8 years ago and to be honest, the place has changed so much for the better. Not sure what the rooms are like these days but the bar area and the food have improved and I wouldn't mind staying here one weekend in the future provided that they did a proper vegetarian breakfast.

, I have lived in Burnham for almost ten years and this pub used to be one of the best places in the town for a meal or a sunday roast , since the landlord and landlady left and the new owners have taken over , it has gone downhill very fast , the tables are sticky and the food is overcooked , dried up and not appetising whatsoever , I am really hoping the new owners see this review and employ a decent chef ,

Nice enough pub but some if the staff are lacking in standard pub skills and the food is appalling: small, overpriced and tastes like microwaved offerings. Tried the food three times and that was twice too many.

I went here some time ago but had managed to send the whole terrible experience really far back in my mind...then someone told me about their visit here so I checked out Trip Advisor.....we can't all be wrong can we? Diabolical food, very unpleasant and rude staff, nobody on site with any management capability or any sign of having the skills needed to deal with the general public. I've heard stories of people being threatened with the police here for daring to ask for meal changes/drink replacements but hadn't quite believed it. Truth is - you better believe it. Very low standards here, don't go here and save yourself the time hassle and overall very nasty experience. Can't believe they're still trading. To say this venue left a nasty taste in my mouth is an understatement.

Visited this place for lunch on the way home from a shopping trip, the first thing we noticed were that the two ladies serving both had very untidy unkempt hair, none of them were wearing any sort of headwear to keep their hair off their faces, the welcome wasn't very warm either, the pies were slightly overdone but hot and the mash was just warm, the pies did not have a lot of flavour to them but there was a noticeable twang to them, possibly mixed herbs not quite sure, the meal was passable but doubt that we would eat there again, the hygiene issue needs to be addressed as we also noticed that the staff were also dragging big bags if potatoes around in between serving although they did put on a a pair of rubber gloves to do this but I doubt they washed their hands after taking the gloves off.

On the 5th October a group of us were booked for a meal at the Green Man: we had booked by email a few days before and the day before we phoned to confirm and change the numbers from 8 to 7. We were told that would be fine and no problem. On the day we arrived and were told they had no record of the booking because it wasn’t in the book. The bar staff said we couldn’t have booked by email or it would be in the book. We said we’d phoned the day before and were told that would be fine: the bar staff said we must have phoned the wrong number. We used the same phone and pressed redial: the staff said we should wait a moment as their phone was ringing. We pointed out that proved we’d used the right phone number: the bar staff said she’d no idea about that and we couldn’t have made a booking because it wasn’t in the book. Her attitude throughout our discussion was extremely off-hand, bordering on rude: she gave no hint of an apology and no indication of what could have gone wrong with their system for taking bookings. Even when we’d proved that we’d phoned the right number, she refused to accept that we’d contacted you at all and simply said you were too busy and couldn’t give us a meal. It was made very clear that she just wanted us to go away. Luckily we were able to make a booking on the spot for the King’s Head, who in complete contrast to the Green Man were very helpful & gave us an excellent meal. It is a great pity that their standard of service and politeness has deteriorated so much, since we as a group regularly sail to Burnham and have used the Green Man for many years; however we shall no longer trouble the Green Man with our custom since it is clearly not wanted.
