The Old Schoolhouse in Liverpool

Very rare I leave a negative review but this is the exception! Bit of a catalogue of disappointment. Sat next to a ceiling leak (these things can happen) hemmed in by a wet floor sign. Ordered starters, mains and a bottle of wine from the off. 10 mins to get the wine to us. Starters (Goats cheese tartlet and fish cakes) we're ok No seasoning and not much Salmon in the fishcake. Goats cheese tart not bad but a touch soft on the pasty. 2 ribeyes for main. 1 was ok. The other was cold and 1/3 unrendered fat. Not pleasant. The chips were homemade but undercooked and a touch soggy. Most of one steak left on the plate.No one asked how it was. No steak knives! Lemon posset and shortcake to finish. Posset was good (2 stars!) Shortcake was soggy. Served with a soup spoon! £92. Pretty shabby.

Waited forty minutes for drinks despite asking twice, left before the food we ordered arrived. Half the staff working, other half standing still.

Food is nice but service and venue is poor. Slow service, staff putting guests in cold conservatory area so that is more manageable for them, and also some seem hungover. Venue is ok. Nothing special. No atmosphere. Not worth the price.

Good food, but it is annoying that food for a group doesn't come out all at the same time. I know that they tell you this when you order, but it's still a faff.

Really disappointing food - the worst that I have had on Lark Lane by some way. For an average of £14 a main meal, you would expect some relatively gourmet products/dishes, but it couldn’t be far from it. You’re left standing at the door for 15 minutes as you enter, feeling like a spare part. Once you’re eventually seated, it doesn’t get any better. The ‘double patty smash burger’ is dry and unseasoned, with the bun clearly having been frozen. The fish was a tiddler that had come straight out of the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The katsu burger devoid of any seasoning or taste whatsoever. There were no check-backs on food, presumably as they know that it wouldn’t look out of place in a Beefeater. £113 for 4 meals, we wouldn’t have paid £40.

Food and service can't be faulted just absolutely hate that there are big screens everywhere. Really spoils it.

Nothing to fault, had a lovely lunch, great food, friendly service and a relaxing place. Freshly made pizza, comfy food cottage pie and irresistible Cod and chips. 👍🏼

Had an absolutely wonderful Sunday Lunch today the food was excellent the service really good special mention to the young waiter (tattoos very slim ) who had a wonderful sense of humour very friendly and knowledgeable about the food made our visit to see our niece so enjoyable thanks everyone will be back 👏😋

Booked for my birthday meal what a mistake. Waited at the door for at least 15 minutes as no one seemed bothered we were there . Eventually someone took us to a table. Waited and waited for someone to come over to ask if we wanted a drink after 15 minutes managed to attract one of the waiters to order some drinks. Waited ages for the drinks to come. Ask could we order food. Waiter took order and never saw him again. A table came in after us and were served their food before we had got our starter. Called waiter over to ask were our starters were he went to get them . Did not bring any cutlery to eat food with so had to ask did waiter did not apologise. My starter was the deep fried cauliflower florets which when I tried to cut into them were rock hard the cauliflower was raw and cold. Called over waitress she took this back had also ordered more drinks which did no arrive. My son in law complained to the manager and the answer he got was "It's a Saturday so it's just what it is like" Did not apologise. We had booked for 5:30 and still had no food by 6:45 so we decided to leave and go elsewhere. Manager did not offer any apologies. My bday night was spoilt . Would definitely not recommend going here as food quality (what we got of it) was atrocious and the service was none existent. The place definitely needs to get a new manager and chef and the staff need to be trained in hospitality. Avoid here at all costs.

Lovely venue but let down by poor quality of food. Staff were lovely but they were by themselves so service was quite slow of no fault of the staff. Food was very poor. A bland soup which was parsnip had no flavour whatsoever. We had a pie which tasted frozen and undercooked. Beetroot with the pie was impossible to consume due to the level of saltiness and sourness. Tasted like a salted sauerkraut. Overall - it’s a lovely venue but needs a lot of attention to food in order to get a better review

**** HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE **** The story is far to long to write on here so I’ll be short and not so sweet. The service was diabolical. Waited 40 mins for drinks over an hour for food which arrived stone cold meals sent back. I ordered a salad with added chicken biggest mistake of my life. 9 hours later I was violently sick and ended up visiting my GP for tests. I then emailed the restaurant to confirm to them I had food poisoning and Mikey the manger argued the toss for nearly a week. He agreed to give me a refund but it never materialised. The place needs shutting down. AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!

Great brunch. Very dog friendly!

Truly dreadful meal. I had the Sunday roast - beef was old and chewy, clearly was either bought sliced or had been prepared a long time ago, potatoes and parsnips anaemic looking and soggy, Yorkshire was ok. My wife fared worse her battered fish had a yellow soggy batter and the chips were hard as nails. Trying to think of something funny to say to lighten the review but can’t think of anything.

Visited here for a spot of lunch and a few drinks with the family. Food was spot on, as was the service.

Me and my family waited to be seated at the door for ten minutes and were ignored by the waiting staff. Then when we eventually sat ourselves down we were told off for seating ourselves down by a waitress and we were then ignore for a further ten minutes. We decided to leave and go somewhere else due to this awful hospitality

Massively understaffed now, with a frustrating policy of not serving at the bar before 9. If you want to go for just a beer, you'll be waiting for it for upwards of 20 minutes from walking in the door. Shame as its got a lot going for it otherwise

Visited for a birthday but unfortunately expectations weren't met at all. We were sat in a whole section of unbussed tables, which stayed exactly as we found them for the next 90 minutes. Birthday person's mains came 30 minutes before the rest of the party so they had the honour of being centre of attention until the rest came through. Dirty cutlery, stained table, no check backs, no offer of desserts or the bill. Some say our plates are still sat at the table to this day.

Used to love this place but I won’t be coming back. Booked Sunday Lunch. Tried to ring before hand to change the booking, no response after 5-6 attempts. Stood waiting in a queue at the entrance for 15 minutes. 3 groups of potential customers left due to the wait. Seated in a squashed area. Rushed to order drinks then our bottle of wine didn’t arrive until after our food was served. No cutlery or salt pepper provided. Cutlery provided few minutes after our meal arrived. Meal was average, beef was pale and chewy. Both dishes were luke warm. Had to get the attention of staff for all basic needs e.g. ordering food, reminding them of sauce they forgot to bring, the fact our drinks didn’t arrive. The service was very poor, no initiative or drive.

Great place to visit on Lark Lane, I've had many a Chai Latte in here and in the outside part. Prices seem reasonable and the food and drink is great.

Terrible service. Book for a table of 10 for a graduation. Waiting 20 minutes for a table left us standing around the dinning area, wasn't offered to sit at the bar and wait. No apology when we actually were sat down, we had pre ordered the food but the server tried to give us menus when we mentioned we had pre ordered she seems shocked seems like they'd completely forgot we were coming. No one came over for a drink order till I had to ask a server 20 mins later. Food order came, one had asked for No pickles, they got this wrong, why ask for a pre order when you're not going to prepare it correctly? Waited more time for a second drinks order. Had to go up to pay the bill as no one came over for us to ask for it. We took the gratituity off and the server actually asked us why we had as if she was shocked we had, she did not apologise once we explained nor did she ask how they could be better. Sent them an email outlining all of this but recieved no response. This meal was for my graduation and ruined the later half of the day for me. Food was OK, cocktails were nice but wouldn't go back due to the terrible and rude service we recieved

The service really lets this place down. We counted 9 tables. There were three waiting staff and one bar man. It still took a long time to get served. On reflection, we have been here a few times and service has always been slow

Food was cold, Diner/pub in trendy area of town. Fixed menu, offered egg and toast, and mushroom on toast, but could make a mushroom omelette when requested,

Food was good when it arrived... 25 minutes later. It was only a fish finger butty! Very tasty though.

Waited at least 20 minutes for a drink. It was much better when you could just go to the bar.

I used to rave about this but honestly it's gone awful. Plates and glasses left on tables for hours. Service is non existent. Don't check back on you. You have to ask them to take your order. Roast potatoes could break your teeth. Young people who work here are not interested at all. Won't be retuning.

Arrived with my wife for breakfast, we waited 15 mins before a member of staff took our order, we then waited 20mins before our food arrived, my order was bacon barm £7.00 it was just a few strip of bacon on a barm, we also ordered 2 lattes but we did not receive them.

Lovely terrace in the sun. It was great to sit out and enjoy the weather with good drinks and good friends. We decided to stay for food too, and it was pretty decent. The paddock peppers were definitely under-seasoned - the few with salt were delicious. Pizza was good too!

A really nice place, lovely food, and attentive service. Went at lunchtime in the summer and the side doors were open to provide a nice cooling breeze. Definitely worth a visit.

Really nice place to sit on a sunny afternoon. Service was excellent, good choice of drinks and treat menu. Had the flattened chicken thighs with cous cous which was excellent.

Staff not every attentive leave then take your order and then you wait about for 20min for your drink then you wait another 10 for your food my first visit the experience not very good probably not visit again but must say the atmosphere was good.

Location is great on a bustling street just a short walk from Sefton Park (parking on Lark Lane can be a pain), the restaurant itself is lovely and has a great garden area. Outside dining in nice weather makes a visit even better, lots of choice for food and everything was delicious and reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they are also dog friendly and have TV’s to watch sports if you like.

Visit was a mixed bag! Ordered two cocktails for £14 and waited over 15 minutes for them. They were nice when they came (very good old fashioned). Getting service to our table for more drinks was a challenge; staff kind of forgot about one part of the outdoor seating area! Eventually ordered a large glass (250ml) of wine and a beer. The large wine only looked to be 175ml and not the bucket size 250ml we ordered (at £8.30). There were no markings on the glass but we have the same glass shape at home and know what large looks like in this glass and this wasn't large. We asked one of the staff to check this and she said she would but didn't look confident. She didn't check - didn't come back - and we didn't feel like making any more fuss. We got the bill and not only were we paying for a large wine when we hadn't been served large, the cocktails had been out through at full price and not two for £14. We did query that. That was £6 too much just on over charging for the cocktails! At least that got amended. I get the feeling that these oversights may be common place and often overlooked by large parties of people so my advice would be to check your bill at the very least. It's a lovely place don't get me wrong. Just unacceptable service.

Very slow service, I had to go over to order and over again to get my drinks… management non existent. Same every time for at least a year.

We had a lovely afternoon into evening at this restaurant. The weather was beautiful and we sat on the terrace in the sunshine. We shared some wine, a charcuterie board and a pizza. Our server, Lauren, was very attentive and went out of her way to help us. Highly recommend for a spot on Lark Lane!

The breakfast was cold and the service was super slow.

Let’s start with the positives: the pizzas are delicious & and the place has an overall good vibe - the beer garden is fantastic in summer. The downside: they’re always understaffed - from getting seated / served to clearing the table everything takes an absolute age. Most menu items that don’t come out of the pizza oven are distinctly average.

Bonne nourriture, personnel accueillant et efficace.

My family went for a meal last week, I could see they were busy, I ordered plain garlic bread and it came with cheese on. My daughter is on a special low protein diet and had she eaten it , would have become very ill. Then we ordered cocktails which never arrived. Also the empty plates were left on our table, so we didn't order a dessert.

Really good food and friendly service

We'd been before a couple of times and each time it was good. Last time(and it will be the last time) was extremely poor. My wife ordered poached egg on sour dough toast. The eggs were hard boiled. My dish of mushrooms and tomatoes on the vine was just as bad. Incinerated tomatoes and barely enough mushrooms to cover the toast. The place was quiet and no one approached us to check on our meals. All I can say it must have been an off day for the staff.

The food was tasty, the location is great and the outside seating is nice on a sunny day. However we ate twice here and twice we felt sick. The first time we weren't sure it was because of their food, but the second time we knew it was and we found out the hygiene rating is 2/5.

I really enjoyed the food. Had a pizza and some small plates. Good sized portions and tasty. (Small plates are not that small! :) Desserts were lovely. Deep fried cheesecake was amazing. Will be back.

One of my favourites on Lark Lane, beautiful venue and team are lovely. Food was 10/10 super tastey and really generous portions. It was busy when we got in but after dinner service went slow, we sat for 20 mins with our plates on the table, ordered a cocktail judt as we finished eating after 20mins, no cocktail, boxed our own food at the table and plates still not cleared. Possibly more team was needed? They were super busy but did get a little annoying sat with your plates for so long. Other than the plate and no cocktail, everything else was great will definitely return. The host kindly took the cocktail off the bill as we had waited too long and we left. Would definitely recommend food was brilliant and everyone lovely sadly just felt a little understaffed

Absolutely brilliant here the choice on the menu was off the chart, service staff were so pleasant, friendly, couldn't do enough for you. The place was packed today Good Friday and yet didn't wait long to be seated or served. I can't wait to go back! Great outdoor place and I might add some of the most well behaved kids and doggos here today. 10/10 would definitely recommend for all age groups.

Great place toilets let it down

Lovely restaurant with a very earthy/ botanical feel! The staff were so friendly and made us laugh! Great food served very quickly! All in all, a great place to go!

We reserved a table for 11 family and friends, there was also an additional cockapoo and her 6 puppies whose 2nd birthday we were celebrating. The service was excellent, nothing was of any trouble for the staff, our meals were very tasty and well presented. I would certainly be returning, in fact we are having breakfast there today, along will all pooches.

A really great pub-restaurant, one of the highlights of Lark Lane. The menu is always first rate, with great variety and always superb quality. A good selection of beers with at least 2 cask ales.

Amazing food keema pizza well recommended

Unfortunately a bad experience overall. Error with my order which was rectified quite quickly, however, the food wasn’t good and I didn’t eat it. I then later realised I had been overcharged so got in contact, I provided evidence that they asked for, and then they stopped replying. Sent multiple emails and all ignored. Definitely would not recommend.

Mikey was an exceptional host. He made us feel truly welcome, delivered exceptional service and was an outstanding ambassador for the brand. We haven’t been here before but this has become our new favourite spot on Lark Lane. Amazing food, good vibes and dog friendly - what more can you ask for? 5* all round!

Had a super food salad. It had orange in it and also a load of trail mix. I don't think this is a combo that works with a salad, but it did say on the menu so I guess I did get what I ordered... My partner had a breakfast which was excellent but quite small for the price. Also, to their credit, the small plates aren't small!

Terrible pizza. Appalling service, avoid at all costs. Choose somewhere smaller, nicer, and better managed.

So, we ate at The Old School House last night. The atmosphere was busy but cosy and the menu looked ok. We didn’t quite understand that the small plates come out the same time as the mains, so when this did happen we were ok with it but just wanted to feedback the manager that it would have been nice to have the small plates as starters as requested. Absolutely we were at this point still happy, but we are big believers in face to face feedback rather than online feedback. The manager came to our table, wringing her hands, unfriendly with an aggressive manner. We simply stated our concern, she argued with us pretty rudely then accused us of being rude, which was shocking and hilarious. It would have been so much easier to humour us with a ‘thanks for that suggestion’ but this manager chose aggression last night! Not one server come and check on our table after that encounter except to get paid. Also our pizzas were soggy and the houmus was lumpy and flavourless so that was the icing on the cake. We were a table full of kids and grandparents…hands down worst service I’ve ever received in a restaurant!

Been a few times now and every time we've been the food and service were really good no complaints really busy at times and some things not available on the menu which has been disappointing but alternative choices have been good so maybe just make sure enough stock to produce the meals as advertised on the menu would be my only criticism

Lovely place but food not that good. Limited menu. Had the fish and chips.. looked great but fish was tasteless and chips greasy. Partner had pesto chicken pasta. Heavily pesto'd, virtually no chicken. Overpriced too for average food.
