Booked the Old Post for Mothering Sunday lunch for 5 at 3pm with our three children. On arrival the manager asked for our booking and advised that we were late, yes we were by 5 minutes! Got taken through to a small bar area (bar closed) and shown our to our table. We sat down and got settled only for the manager to come with the lunch menus and inform us that they had run out of all Sunday Roast options. Having booked this table well in advance I don't think that it was too much to expect a simple roast lunch for the family and not having to be subjected to the standard fried menu items! we decided to leave and find an alternative option, due to this being one of the busiest days for restaurants/pubs we soon gave up and made our lunch. The manager confirmed that they had not taken any walk inns this day and simply ran out of food, how this is possible if you know how many diners are coming in advance I do not know. We generally have good experiences within Brains pubs but the inconsistency of their restaurants is their biggest downfall.

Very bad experience as went to the Old post today for dinner. We were the only people in the restaurant and no one else. Staff tried to rushed us and served us half cooked food specially the chicken and when we showed the raw chicken to the member of staff who served us then she then advised us they have taken inside temperature and that the chicken they served us was fine.....Very disappointed and we are going to this place since 2001 and i remember that this used to be the best restaurant in this area but for last couple of years this has been totally neglected and the staff do not care about the customers and there is no one to check there performance with in the restaurant since SA Brain have taken over......Complete waste of time and money.....I know my complaint will be neglected but i rather show how sad and disappointed i am with what has happened to this nice place and i wont be surprised if it closed down soon..At least now i have the answer as to why there was no one else apart from myself and my wife in the restaurant......Myself and my friends and family members will not be visiting this place again and please do not waste your time and money in this place either........

Another 30 minutes later the mains arrived: cold mash, no veg with the 3 pies and the chips were cole with fish and chips. Maybe the chef needs to learn how to work a ticketing system properly I would advise retraining the kitchen team!! Would not go back in a hurry!!

We knew nothing about this place and simply stopped as we were driving past. It has an nice atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was lovely. We had the blanch bait to start which were lovely, very crispy and hot. I had the fish and chips - the fish was very light and tasty with a light batter. The chips were just right, crispy on the outside and soft inside. My parents both had the ham, egg and chips and enjoyed it very much. The ham, they said, was delicious but there was so much of it my father had it wrapped so he could have a sandwich for dinner. All the food was hot and served quickly. For desert I had the lemon posset which was light and the lemon not to tangy. My father had the bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and said it was very nice. Would be more than happy to return here.

We visited on our return from Cowbridge on Sunday lunchtime. There was plenty of choice on the menu and we both decided on a beef roast dinner. The food arrived faster than we were told to expect. It was a good size portion, nice and hot with extra gravy provided. Since you could choose a starter or dessert for just £2 more, I had a lovely apple pie and custard while my wife had chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. Again they were good portions. The staff were friendly and all the food was delicious and served timely. Really glad we decided to visit.

Eight of my family members visited here for a birthday dinner for my nephew. Firstly, there was a 45 minute wait on food which we accepted despite the pub being particular quiet. The meals arrived and my dad tucked into his beef madras. A few mouthfuls in he sees a black but. Naturally you'd assume it was a bit or burnt beef, but no, this was a fly. It had been swimming in the curry sauce together with all of its filth and bacteria. Needless to say, we were all thoroughly put off our food. My dad was asked if he wanted another dinner! No thanks, not curry from that same batch with a fly swimming in it. The team leader on duty barely apologised and said "that's never happened before" and then trundles off and merely brought back a plate with a refund for the dinner. When asked to speak to the manager, he came out in his chef outfit so obviously they have been struggling or else why would the manager be cooling! Offered a complimentary meal for two. Would never EVER want to eat there again so returned the offer as I don't think my stomach could take such filth!

We popped in for dinner. We were informed straight away there was a wait of 45 minutes for food. Not a problem for us. We ordered the nachos to start with Welsh chilli, a good portion that doesn't scrimp on the chilli. We had the American burger and the 1/2 bbq chicken for mains. The portions were a good size and tasted great, I love American mustard so was happy to see my burger dressed with it, my partner could barely eat his chicken, and the sauce was lovely. Didn't have room for desserts. The young lady at the bar was a delight, as was our waiter. We will return again.

Stopped by the old post and they were serving their mother's day menu - two courses for 13.99. Had the chicken and chorizo starter which was lovely. Then waited an age for the main course. I was confused by the fish pie - it clearly stated on the menu it was home made, but it was piping hot (dish and all). Rubbery mash potato sat on a gluttonous mix of unappetising mashed up fish in sauce. The fork could stand up on its own! After we paid the bill, we were told that the fish pie isn't home made but bought in. Would never have ordered it if it hadn't said home made on the menu.

The Old Post sells typical 'Pub Grub'! It's not particularly fancy, the food is pre cooked/frozen but is presented well. If you just want a quick bite to eat, this is ideal. When food arrived salad was on one plate with lasagne and chips on the other. Informed waitress that we wanted to share and we did state we were going to share. Informed that was how it came and was served from kitchen, one with salad one with chips. Was not impressed with attitude no attempt was made to get a plate or dish so chips and salad could be transferred ready for sharing. I went and asked for a plate and shared the food myself. Not exactly what we wanted. The Lasagne was quite greasy but piping hot as were the chips. Plentiful food and left very full. We used to eat here a lot when the previous owners had it so when we came back this month for the first time in a while it was a bit of a shock to find that the prices had increased so much. We ordered an orange juice with lemonade and Coke which were both flat but there was only one man working and he was running around serving food and trying to manage the bar. We did not want to disturb him as he looked quite stressed. The food was lovely and I can't fault the portion size. My chips were a bit hard but I wasn't too bothered about that. Like I said earlier, it was a shock when the bill came as it is advertised as 2 meals for £10 however this is only on certain dates and times so we felt slightly misled. The bill came to around £40 so our light cheap lunch didn't quite turn out as we had planned. I would go back but not in a hurry due to the increase in price and the lack or organisation we experienced.

Again cooked to perfection, plenty in plate.our daughter fancied an omlette of all things but it was not on menu so i asked at the bar if it was possible. The young chap ( who was very professional) had a word with chef he came back and said no problem. We were all very happy that they catered for an item that was not on menu and as it was a sunday they were doing sunday lunches, chips, you name it they cooked it. The chef really had they're work cut out. For the 3 of us to eat and drinks it only came to £30.00. The manger jokingly said to us when i gave compliments "you got me into trouble with chef, but we aim to please". Will be back very soon, great atmospher, spotlessly clean and best prices especially for cardiff. Excited to return cannot brag this place up enough.by the way our daughter said the omlette was better than daddy's and that's saying something as he does cook a mean omlette, they say kids are the biggest crittics she loved this place too.

Both the Men's and Ladies toilets were stinking which wasn't a good sign at the start of the night. The fact that the place was empty reflected the standard of what was to come. The bar staff seemed to be proficient at the game of hide and seek. When the food finally turned up the curry resembled meat in dishwater and was tasteless. The cajun chicken was overcooked. Cajun chicken was just chargrilled chicken with cajun powder sprinkled over, not the marinated version they depict on their menu. I have long found restaurants in Brains pubs around Cardiff and as far as St David's to be the best food, reliable quality and value for money to be found. This pub/restaurant is on our way home when we go into the city and ahandy place to stop next to the main A48 road at Bonvislton. The last time we stopped, I left my food as it was awful. We always go for 2 meals for the price of one and enjoy beer battered fish and chips with a still drink. We left our meal as the fish was grey and not white as expected of Cod. (my wife is a chef)We decided to try again as the pace seemed to have changed it's menu of lkate and when we saw the selection for the 2 for £10 meals offer (not much to choose from) we again apted for QUOTE - Beer battered Cod and chips. What we got was a thin slice of grey fish (I admit there was some white meat) and a great deal of skin.I actually asked the waitress if the fish was Cod with white (not grey meat) she agreed that we were to be served COD with white meat in beer batter - my wife is dairy intolerant and cannot take normal batter with milk.Once again we were served what I can only describe as a bloody awful piece of fish. Being a typical Welshman - I eat anything but did leave some grey bits on my plate with the worse limp soggy what was described as salad leaves I have ever seen.Needless to say we will not be eating h=there again.Mr Brains - you have let us down and lost regular custom.

Been here a few times now with my husband mum dad nan and sister. We all like different things and all left full and satisfied. Service is great and friendly. Normal portions are huge. But they do a smaller size of you prefer. All food is lovely quality. Will be going back again.

Three of us went here for an evening meal. We ordered 3 starters, which were ok, but they brought them out at different times. We ordered more drinks, but the cider pump had run out and there was no one to change the barrel for over half an hour, and then we had to wait for a bottle of Malibu to be brought as they ran out of that too. Main courses arrived and the steak on 2 of the plates were burnt to a crisp, and these were meant to be medium rare. Very disappointed as this is normally a good place.

We called in to The Old Post on Wednesday evening for a meal, with my husband, his Aunt. As my husbands Aunt and I didn't want a large portion we opted for the smaller portion of Scampi and Battered Cod. My husband had the normal portion of Scampi, it was very nice but while the scampi and the cod were portions were smaller, we still had the same amount of chips as my husband, Which some what defeated the object of having a smaller portion. The meal itself was lovely the pub very good and so was the service the only criticisms was we wish the smaller portion had inclued a smaller portion of chips otherwise could not fault it

Visited the old post today to find they have a new menu and no longer do the 2 for 1, but food was well priced regardless of this. Couldn't fault the food. Both meals were well cooked and very tasty. Lovely pub would definitely recommend.

We visited the old post, with our nephew and his partner. They had never been before. We had the fishermans Platter and the Sharers Platter to start, well presented and well cooked. For main courses we had 2 Mixed Grills, A Taveners Chickens, and a Steak New Yorker. We all enjoyed our meals, and was to stuffed to have a pudding. We have never encountered a bad experience when we have come here to eat. Excellent service all round

Visited this place with partner, mum and niece. Ordered 2 burgers, chicken dish and a chicken and leek pie. Food came at different times. 'Chilli' burger had a teaspoon of chilli on it; when asked for more another teaspoon added. Went to cut burger in half; couldn' t get knife through it. Replaced burger was ok. Chicken pie had a deep dish with about an inch of filling. Sent back; replaced with full dish of filling. Mum's chicken was overcooked. No reduction in bill; just an apology. First time I've been here in 6 years; will NEVER be back. My friend runs Brains pubs and her food is always fabulous. This place is shocking.

Two for one deal on meals. Our party of four were all satisfied with our meals and they seemed good value for money. However when it came to ordering sweets, I chose not to have one and opted for a coffee instead, yet it did not arrive until everyone else had finished their sweet. My friend complained on my behalf and it still took sometime for it to arrive! It took so long that we composed new lyrics to the background music about my missing coffee. My coffee was nice, but no coffee is worth waiting that length of time for. I would go again, as the meals were good value for money, but I would make sure that I wasn't in a hurry.

As a regular at the Old Post, I'm aware of the quality of food that can be expected. Its nothing 'out of this world' but it has always been acceptable pub food. However, I've just come home from the Old Post, and I had never planned on finishing up my evening by having to cook myself and my husband extra food because we are both still so hungry! We waited an unacceptable amount of time for our food, only to be presented with, what can only be described as miniature pieces of batter containing a small sample of fish inside. This was accompanied by approximately 10 chips and an equal amount of overboiled frozen peas.We finished our meals in a few minutes, as there was very little to eat! We sat having a drink for 40 minutes before the sour-faced waitress approached to ask if the meals had been OK. I explained how disgusted we were at the baby-sized portions, only to be met with her unnecessary attitude, and her informing us that the portions are pre-set. 5 minutes later the manager approached to tell us that he has also noticed that the portions have shrunk in size (helpful!). The manager was apologetic, unlike the miserable waitress, and he asked us to complain to Brains head office, as it would 'be doing him a favour'. Whilst he did apologise, he informed us there was nothing else he could do. No offer of a refund or compensation. We will definitely not be visiting this place again, unless we are embarking on a forced diet!!

First visit this lunchtime....and last. Place was empty when we arrived but still took them over 30 minutes to unapologetically deliver our meals. The elderly and shrapnel like beer batter, when hacked away, contained the merest sliver of what was possibly a piece of cod - grey and tasteless it could quite frankly have been anything. A very disappointing meal.

Called in for lunch today (07/07/14). Worst meal experienced for a very long time. Pie of the day was chicken & mushroom. It was half a dish of beige water with a few mushrooms and chicken bits (if you could find them lurking under the water. The pie crust was pale on top and black burned underneath, the chips were dry and the peas like bullets. The waitress didn't come back to the table until after we had finished (i.e could eat no more). She asked us if everything had been okay and when we told her what we thought of 'pie of the day' she shrugged and said that she hadn't been able to ask us sooner if everything was okay as she had been busy - the pub was nearly empty! That was the end of it - no apology or attempt at redress. ! I think she must be used to complaints. Needless to say we will never go back there again.

I took my little girl here for a late lunch one afternoon. Because I only ordered one adult meal and one children's meal, I didn't take advantage of the two-for-one deal. Initially I ordered fish & chips - only to be told a little while later that this was not available. Not a problem, this has happened to me in other restaurants, so I opted for the haddock dish instead at a £4.00 increased price. The manager had come to my table to let me know that the fish & chips were off the menu, and asked me to choose an alternative. I was quite aware that this was at extra cost, but within a few minutes the young lady behind the bar came to my table to tell me that I "owed four pounds" - I wasn't planning on not paying this extra fee, I just didn't want to wait in the queue at the bar again for ages to pay with my little one as the card machine was taking an extremely long time to work that day. Whilst waiting for my food to arrive, I witnessed the totally childish behaviour of the same waitress and a young, blonde-haired waiter play-fighting in front of the bar. I guess some people just never grow up.When my food was served, it was served without peas. I questioned this, especially as I thought £14.99 for a small piece of haddock in cheese sauce with chips was well-overpriced anyway. I was told that it didn't come with peas, and promptly pointed out the menu stating that it should. I was told that "the chef had lied then" before the manager walked away into the kitchen and shortly after I had an apology from the manager, and a small bowl of peas to add to my plate. My final complaint is the foul-mouthed chef that could clearly be heard swearing from behind the swing-style doors to the kitchen area. This is not what I want my three-year old to be hearing!! I will not be returning to The Old Post, and certainly wouldn't recommend it to others. In my opinion, the staff working here need either a complete overhaul, or in the very least customer service training. The manager seemed polite enough, but doesn't seem to have adequate control over his staff, as a manager should do. It appeared to be the other way around - that they were all running rings around him.Overall, to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. The staff are less than professional at this establishment, the food is mediocre and in my opinion you can get much better service and quality of food for a small extra cost at the Aubrey Arms which is two minutes further along the A48. Shockingly, both The Old Post and The Aubrey Arms are run by S.A.Brain - what a noticeable difference between them though!!

First visit and underwhelmed by the experience. Two for one meal deal may on the face of it, appear good value, but I would rather pay full price and enjoy.Cauliflower was brown, broccoli, carrots and peas undercooked and the herb encrusted cod was just, only just passable. The only thing that stops a Terrible rating was the young lady serving. She apologised and reported the feedback to the kitchen and then returned and offered us some free drinks which we declined. She handled herself very well whereas the manager / chef were conspicuous by their absence!!!We will not return as this was a very poor experience. AVOID is my recommendation.

We visited here for a birthday meal. We were informed upon arrival that the food would take up to half an hour due to the restaurant being very full, this was not a problem for us. We ordered a starter which was with us in 10 minutes, a lovely fish platter, followed in a timely manner by our main courses. Can highly recommend the Mixed Grill. All the staff we encountered were friendly and approachable. A good clean pub that sells good food.

Booked lunch for 10 friends. Pub half full when we arrived and everyone had been served. Waited a good 40 minutes for our meals and most were dried up and disappointing. The batter on the fish was dark and hard and the fish dry, most were left, the sausages with the all day breakfast were literally black, luckily the gentleman who was eating the meal liked sausages well done, others were left. We were all very disappointed and I'm afraid will not be going back.

It was a quiet lunch time, took kids there as little climbing frame and slide in garden. But garden was really steep with a lot of steps to get to climbing frame. Took over half an hour for 2 cokes and a coffee to arrive at table. The food arrived before drinks. Food was burnt and extremely salty. Chips had been re-heated and tasted old and horrible. Bacon burnt and baguette was like rubber! Children's meal was burnt too. When waitressed asked if food was ok, which we replied "no" and explained what the problem was, she stood and disputed, didn't care or interested! I would not recommend or go there again. Wasn't cheap either!!

On 20 April at 19:30 my partner and I popped into The Old Post, Bonvilston for a bite to eat on the way home from watching the rugby at millennium stadium. As it was easter Sunday, we would have expected it to be busy. We were approached by a manager who told us "if we are wanting to eat then im afraid your out of luck as we do not have food in stock. We didn't order any and as we are quiet, I have sent the chef home".Cmon it was easter Sunday for goodness sake. How could you not have enough food. Im sure Brains brewery would not be pleased that you turned custom away.

This has to be the worst Sunday Roast I have ever had, the hottest thing on the plate was the Horseradish sauce and you also have the pleasure to wait over 50 mins for it. you know it is bad when the waitress doesn't even bother to ask you if you enjoyed you meal. Also as other review stated the Buy one get one free is a joke as it very expensive for just one meal .Avoid at all cost, will never go there again.

Visted this restaurant on the 29/03/14 with my family. From outside the restaurnant looks welcoming however inside is a different matter. The offer of buy one meal get another free is misleading as the meals are quite expensive to start with. The overall experiance was terrible. The tables were sticky, the service was slow with all food coming out at differant times and with side orders missing. My nephew ordered a steak ( not cheap ) it came out without a steak knife and it was like rubber and burnt to a crisp. All meals were luke warm and just about edible. Places like this should not be allowed to serve food . Avoid however hungry you may be, or just go to the pub next door.

Normally great food and service at this place but been there twice in the past two months and food was dry overcooked and presented very poorly. Only acceptable as two for one but the burnt shrivelled dry steak I asks for as medium rare was disappointing and poorly presented with 3 pieces of scampi and a jacket potato. No side salad and my sons peas were like bullets. At 15.99 each pretty disgraceful. Won't be going back in a hurry. Complained and got free deserts but had those not been free would have complained about those too.

Went to the Old Post today for lunch, had previously been there several months ago and had a nice lunch, however what a change today, I ordered vegetable lasagne with salad, definitely a big mistake, the lasagne tasted ok but was obviously a frozen one which one can buy in most supermarkets for about £1 then cooked in a microwave, the salad, which I could not bring myself to eat, looked as if it had previously been on several other peoples plates, then returned to the kitchen and just used over again, when the waitress collected our plates I mentioned to her about the salad and she said she would tell the chef, however no apology was offered by anyone. My sister ordered the ham eggs and chips. the eggs and chips were ok but the ham was 'see through' thin and was not a fresh looking colour so this we took home with us and gave to the dog next door, even she was a bit wary about eating it!!!! Both our husbands decided on the all day breakfast which was just about what you could call warm. On arrival, the place was virtually empty and my husband jokingly said to the staff "is the food that bad here?" We did however find the young ladies behind the bar were very pleasant. To sum up it appears this 'Two for the price of One ' is obviously obtained by largely overpricing the price of the first meal. We don't like to give a negative review but if our comments makes the owner or manager sit up and take notice perhaps they will get their act together.

Me and my family stopped off by chance at the pub after a long day out and not being able to find a pub we went to last year.We were cold, hungry and tired. We went in to have a lovely relaxed and friendly welcome.Staff were friendly the pub was wonderful, we all had fantastic meals at a brilliant price which were served quickly. Being vegetarian I could not believe the amount of options as usually there are very few. The kids were given bags containing stickers, puzzles and other bits and bobs which were perfect to entertain them. we went to the old post for a meal tonight it has an offer on for 2 for one which in hindsight we should have thought twice about , when we arrived the pub/restaurant was fairly busy but soon died down as it was a sunday evening we ordered the combo to share which when it arrived was a few over cooked chips a small dish of nachos with your weight of cheese on way two pieces of spicy chicken a few onion rings and a few scampi thrown in for good measure with two slices of garlic bread , it was enough for two to share if you felt the need to eat your weight in cheese over soggy nachos the spicy chicken goujon was over cooked you had to dip it in to the cream cheese dip just to soften it up the scampi when bitten in to was clearly frozen as it still had the water in it garlic bread was usual as you cant really destroy this the onion rings were hard and over cooked , wouldnt recommend this as a starterour main course was steak i ordered mine well done and my husband wanted his rare when our steaks arrived mine was way under cooked so i sent it back my husband waited for my food to come back whilst his was getting cold there was no one to ask if his could be kept warm mine did return after 5 mins but the steak wasnt cooked right through i didnt ask for it to be cooked again as my husband had waited long enough for mine to be returned , we wouldnt recommend this unless you are desperate the service was average but the food was below average would not recommend even though they do 2 for one .

Never ever again,My husband daughter and myself decided to Visit the old post on our way home. It advertised two for one (which is very good). However, I am not at all fussy but come on, I ordered fish and chips and i can honestly say every mouthful had at least three bones in it, my husband had 1/2 a chicken which was deep fried and very dry. My daughter had steak which was supposed to be medium rare and it arrived medium, the free meal which was ceasars salad was ok but had skin from the red onion left in the salad, I was not at all happy when it was stuck on the roof of my mouth. Does it really take a genius to ensure the salad was prepared properly. The staff were lovely, however we were never asked how our meal was (thank god really I think I would have bitten her head off with complaints). Walked in after a 4 hour drive today, didn't know the place, never seen it before and just wanted a drink before driving again. The woman at the bar was super unhelpful and scowled at me the whole way through me ordering our drinks, for £16.40 for two pints i would have expected at least friendly service. I get it I was not in suit but does that deserve to be scowled at and made to feel super unwelcome. We finished our drinks and got the hell out of there as quick as we could. Will never return and have already told my wealthier friends and family not to attend this place

We had a pleasant lunch at The Btown Cow. The dining room was pleasant if a little dark, however its an old building so that's OK. Very pleasant young waiter. The menu is quite big and it's very varied, something for everyone. I had vegetarian Toad In The Hole, excellent , well presented and delicious. Husband chose the open beef sandwich, which unfortunately wasn't as good. The baguette was tough and the steak was "not the best". Our coffee at the end of the meal was really just froth!! However, it was clean and comfortable, a very pleasant young waiter and the loos were spotless.
