Wanted to leave a review after staying in Clitheroe on Wednesday night this week - for my husband's birthday, which we always have to share with Valentine's couples! Had our evening meal at Holmes Mill Bistro. The decor was spot on and the 'dining in the dark' ambience was perfect. But the biggest accolades must go to the staff. The young, male maitre d' was so impressive - polite, attentive and turned his hand to whatever was needed. Give that young man a raise! I hope he's as appreciated as he should be.

No greeting by anyone when entered . Had to find our own table. Not very warm in restaurant . Long wait at bar due to wedding using bar and lounge area while upstairs room was being changed for evening and not enough staff! Unable to sit in lounge area first for pre dinner drink as was full of wedding guests! Once sat down rushed through all the meal and poorly trained staff removing plates before everyone had finished! Poor and very unusual menu and food equally very poor ! Such a shame ! Wouldn’t return!

We went to the Bar & Grill on Saturday the 25th November, one of our party is a vegetarian, the menu is limiting to the point that our vegetarian could only have a starter. When my meal arrived part of the order was missing, I informed the waiter of the missing part of my meal and he was apologetic and said that he would get the missing part right away, when the missing portions arrived it was inedible....under cooked, we are talking about onion rings, how do you under cook onion rings and why were they presented to me in that state, the waiter / cook would not have accepted them in that condition, why was I expected to ? Over priced for the quality of food. Don't bother there are better places to eat in the area.

The service here was amazing when we visited. The only disappointment was the menu. I know its a bar & grill now but there was hardly any options. We both went for the Steak Burger, we were expecting is to be amazing. But honestly it was awful for the price. Just meat, a big piece of lettuce and a small amount to burger relish for £17. No cheese, salad. Really disappointed, will not be returning.

We had booked but we took a chance and just turned up with all the family, thirteen of us. I suppose we could have been asking for trouble but they took it all in their stride and got on with it. We ordered drinks and as they arrived we ordered food. We had a bit of a wait but what do you expect with the size of our party. Everything was great. Well done everyone.

What a shame! We waited such a long time for the Bistro to re-open. However, we were so disappointed on Saturday evening. The revised table layout felt strange to us. Sitting at a table for 2 next to a group of wedding guests, felt like we were intruding on the wedding. The food was nice, but nothing special. The staff were very polite, but minimalist in their service. I guess this is summed up best with the photo of the bottle of red wine just placed on the table..... since when do you have to open your own bottle of wine at a nice restaurant! I wouldn't put folks off dining here, but I doubt we will be rushing back any time soon..... like I said....what a shame!

Really good bar especially with the old mill machinery still in place. Great choice of beers. Have to say the metal seats at the bar are really uncomfortable!! We ordered a couple of burgers and we were really disappointed. They were only average bulked out by a load of skinny fries. We didn’t think they were worth the £30 we paid for them. Would def go back as a good bar but not to eat unfortunately.

Ate here tonight as an anniversary meal for me and my partner. We have always wanted to come but very disappointed. We had the chipolatas to start, and the only way I can discribe them was tasteless, definitely not what we expected. We both ordered the ribeye steak, which was cooked to perfection; however the sauce wr ordered with it, was the smallest portion ever and not great, for £3:50 I would of expected more. The dessert was great. The waiter that served us, I think he said his name was joe, was great, very good at his job. He was the only one that actually showed any interest in our table. So Thankyou joe!

Big fan of Holmes Mill but just eaten in the food hall today. Had 80p worth of salad ingredients served up as a Greek salad for over £7.00. The balsamic dressing must have been expensive. Mother had the blandest of chicken and bacon sandwich - just served as if the kitchen couldn't care less. I'm sure there's far better fayre and more reasonably priced. Bad experience and poor showing from an outlet which should be aiming far higher than this.

There are some positives here: a great room to eat in, cleverly converted, and a maitre d' who was a model for others - interested, sympathetic, efficient. Wines were good, albeit from a too short list. Starters too created a good impression; the bruschetta very imaginative, the crab rarebit clever and well judged. After that everything went down hill. The lobster was chewy to the extent it was pretty much inedible. The claws came with no implements to break them. A replacement of the tandoori sea bream was fashionably but unpleasantly undercooked, with the tandoori paste acting as little more than a condiment. Part of my wife's poussin had blood on the surface. Waiting staff were pleasant and enthusiastic but very poorly trained, unable to identify the dishes they were serving. The kitchen wrongly identified the cheeses on the 'local' cheese board. These failings could have so easily been remedied, given that the produce comes from the wonderful food hall next door, where the waiting staff should spend some time. Teething troubles as they re-open after a closure of almost 2 years? I hope so, because this room deserves good food. But it's not cheap (my three courses would have cost getting on for £60, before drinks) and it has to be a lot better to justify it. I end though with my compliments to the maitre d', who accepted the failings, didn't charge us for anything, and did all he could to persuade the kitchen to send us out some decent food. He too deserves better.

I used to visit the Bistro and the Food Hall regularly, I've also stayed in the Spinning Block Hotel several times and ill be honest the food is great and the service was adequate and id even recommended my friends come here to enjoy the bistro and hotel. However, I was overwhelmed by how many staff I could see smoking round the back, even from the hotel window and bistro window, even shouting and being overly loud sometimes and it seems every trip I go on I always see them around the area smoking. I'm sure people get married close to where they smoke as well? You would have thought they would have a closed off area for them to go and smoke and loiter instead of directly under the hotel windows and in view of the bistro, I even saw them loitering and smoking whilst i was driving away through a gate. There are worse things undoubtedly, but I think this takes away from the experience for me a little and makes it feel quite tacky, it doesn't give off a professional image. My friends have noticed this as well, and we have both discussed such. Such a shame as its such a lovely establishment, I hope they can resolve this in the future.

Interesting building with lots of great foodie items to purchase. Sat down at a table to order coffee, but as nobody arrived started to look round to see if there was somewhere to go to order....? Apparently not. So waited and the member of staff who was chatting to customers was aware of us but carried on talking (maybe to regulars?) so eventually stopped someone walking about with boxes and she ‘kindly’ came back to take an order. This all took far too long!

Main, Atlantic cod. Very strange taste. Breaded oyster with the dish was clearly off as it had a horrific smell to it. The dish had a very unnatural taste. Couldn’t eat it. Staff responded that few other people have also mentioned the taste and you either love it or hate it. On this occasion it was hard and there was no offer to have it removed off the bill. Will go back for drinks only. Not for food.

First visit last night for a staff party, was so looking forward to it. First impression was good, lovely old building good vibe about the place, that was as good as it got. The food was served by staff that weren’t interested in the slightest and obviously hadn’t had much training, cold Yorkshire puddings all round, ran out of gluten free options even though they had all been pre ordered. My wife was offered a gluten free option of veg to go with her meal, a side plate of overcooked and cold broccoli duly arrived!! Lukewarm to cold meal eaten the clearing up began, oh my!. The waiter picked up the wooden platter that had had the beef on and proceeded to spill the blood over the table cloth, we suggested he just took the platter away before he spilt anymore, but just ignored us and picked up the leftover cold Yorkshire puddings. That enabled him to then spill more of the blood on the floor and then unknown at the time on the sleeve of my jacket!. Not a word of apology , no attempt to wipe the floor to avoid someone slipping on it, we actually wiped it ourselves with a napkin. It is such a shame that these sort of venues are let down by poor staff training and lack of supervision. The food could of been ok given more organisation front of house, but quite how you think serving hot food onto cold plates is a good idea is beyond me. Oh and who do I send the dry cleaning bill to for my blood stained suit? Not good value for the price per head, some major tweaks to kitchen and waiting staff could make this place much more successful, but I won’t be going back any time soon!!

The Waiter asked if I would like a new piece which I accepted, after 10 minutes whilst everyone else has finished their food, mine came out. It was the same piece of meat. Good food but disappointed by the atmosphere and poor service, overall not worth the price paid. Upon arrival there was a wedding function in the bar area which was very noisy and crowded. We waited around 5 minutes to be seated even though the restaurant side of the venue was empty. We was informed the wedding party were due to leave shortly but this continued for the majority of our meal, at least an hour, and so the atmosphere was very noisy. Once the food was brought out we were asked whether we would like anything else (thinking they would only ask this once all the food was brought out) my wife reminded them about her side she had ordered, in which a lead waitress replied by saying I have only got two hands and can’t carry everything out at once. They had also got one of our orders wrong but we didn’t bother to point this out. The food was well cooked however the atmosphere and the service we was provided with let the place down.

Had been looking forward to this all my wedding stay - breakfast the next day is the best bit, right? But not here; major let down. The restaurant looks real nice, but that's where the positives end. Terrible service - after being sat down a while, a waitress finally came over to take our order; asked whether we wanted tea or coffee and what food we wanted. I ordered the full English. Helped myself to pastries and my tea came soon after. No milk was provided - had to get up and ask for that... 45 minutes the breakfast came. Asked for a poached egg - was given a fried. THE fattiest bacon in the world on the plate. Had asked for white toast and was given brown bread. Asked if they could toast my bread and was told it had been in the toaster. Had to ask again for it to be re-toasted. No sauces provided. Had to go and ask for red and brown sauce. Only brown sauce was brought over. To be fair, the sausage was excellent; the rest of the breakfast: cold, fatty... yeah maybe I should have asked for it to go back, but by this point I was sick of having to get up to talk to the waiters/waitresses. Crying shame because the rest of the wedding was excellent. The breakfast cost and extra tenner. No way worth it. Wish I'd found the nearest Spoons.

The wife and I managed to have a day out for the first time since the birth of our new baby (3 months). It was my birthday so we went out for drinks and reserved a table for early evening not wanting to be home to late. We arrived earlier than we had booked as we were ready to eat, there was no issue as the restaurant was particularly quiet around this time (6:00pm). There were only 3 other tables occupied so the kitchen couldn’t be overrun. The staff were friendly and welcoming enough and the environment was well presented, but was lacking a bit of atmosphere, however I put this down to the fact it was a Saturday and we were early evening, my guess was that it got much busier later. We’d had plenty of good reviews about the place and was therefore looking forward to the meal. We ordered starters of lamb kebabs and spicy squid rings, the lamb kebabs were ok at best, slightly strange taste, but the wife’s squid rings left a foul taste and feel to the pallet, there was an overburdening taste of lemon and a burning zing on the tongue. We passed off the starters as ok and ordered main, I had a fillet steak rare and the wife had a 28 day matured salt marsh sirloin. The food came relatively quickly but it was awful, my fillet could only be described as ok at best, cooked well enough but tasteless, almost as if it was frozen and not fresh, the chips were not particularly tasty either. The wife ate one mouthful of steak and one potato, tough and chewy, cold potatoes, the only saving grace was she’s ordered a side of vegetables which were ok so she ate them. We were asked if our meal was ok and we did mention the above with the offer being made to replace the food, however we declined and just asked not to be billed for the wife’s meal, which was agreed without hesitation. The staff were apologetic and accommodating with the bill, we are really not a couple to complain but felt this meal was so poor that we must.

Visited on a Saturday evening around 7:30pm. The bar and seating area was busy and there was a good atmosphere. Waited 20 minutes stood directly at the bar with a couple of people either side of me we were all equally ignored in favour of other people around us. Not one member of the bar staff even made eye contact to say they wouldn’t be long etc which is poor service and pretty rude in my opinion. Just because you don’t look up and make eye contact doesn’t mean we aren’t there!! When I was eventually served it was hurried, sloppy (spillage) and with no apology for the length of any wait I may have had. 20 minutes to buy 4 drinks is not good. I would have walked out along with the 3 people with me had I not been there to have a celebratory drink with a friend who had just announced their engagement. The same issue occurred when one of the people with me went to get the next round in. He was bypassed and ignored for a very similar length of time - at one point a member of the bar staff walked the entire length of the bar from back to front ignoring the people on the side waiting to be served in order to serve someone they clearly knew who had just walked in!!

This place continues to grow and gets better every time. Last time we came it was just the Beer Hall, a former industrial building converted to provide a large pub and brewery on the ground floor plus function facilities upstairs. Now there is an “artisan” food hall too (excellent) plus the boutique hotel and ground floor bar and bistro, which offers great accommodation and fantastic food! Quieter and more relaxed than the beer hall the menu is great price (early bird 2 courses £15) and also fantastic quality. Surroundings are full of character, staff are very friendly and helpful and the food/drink is great quality and price. Parking can be tricky locally but this place is great!!! Recommend

We visited on a Saturday lunch time at 12 noon. We were the first diners to arrive. Starting with the good points - the interior is truly stunning, as is most of the Holmes Mill complex. The sticky toffee pudding, which we both had, was one of the best - not sure if it was Cartmel or not.

Cocktails are delicious and excellent offer on a Friday night, however, took ages to get served and in the end we gave up. They could be turning over a lot more with the right number of staff

I stopped coming here after my first visit. however tired again today..... waited over 40 mins for full english and sausage buttie. cancelled it in the end.... terrible service. staff don't seem trained to a high standard. if at all, not there fault. Definitely requires better management. certainly won't be getting a 3rd chance.

We’ve just been to the bistro for lunch with another couple and our two year old daughter. When we arrived we were asked if we were sure we had booked a table here and not the food hall, which initially made us feel very unwelcome.

Really good evening. Food good etc. Service good.Just struggled a bit with the volume of pianist & trying to talk as due to setting was quite loud- who was amazing.!!

We had a very meal on a Saturday night. There was a very pleasant accompaniment of a live pianist who played almost all night. I had a very tasty smoked salmon starter followed by a Himalayan aged rib eye steak. There was a wide wine list. The atmosphere made the difference. We had vouchers which were not.clearly marked for their expiry date. We argued and convinced them to honour the value.

We were staying in the hotel and booked a evening meal, the décor is stunning. We had pre dinner cocktails/drinks and was taken through to our table on time, the food was amazing with a good variety of dishes to suit most palates. Great service and background music performed by the pianist made it a perfect night.

We arrived at the bistro as a group of six friends. There were only two tables taken. A chap came over to take our drinks order yet we hadnt been given a drinks menu.As we were browsing the menu a wedding party arrived in the bar area.

I came on a Friday lunch with four other ladies. The service from the off was slow, our drinks took ages and we weren't brought any food menus - this was made worse by the fact there was only ourselves and two tables of two in the bistro. Once we ordered and the food came, the food was great and a good value lunch menu. No-one came to check on us, and no-one came to take a second drinks order throughout the two hours we were there. As the waiter cleared away our dishes, he knocked a water bowl onto my lap leaving me soaked wet through to the point it ruined the remainder of my afternoon as I was that wet. I understand accidents happen but I was disappointed how this was handle by staff and no-one made an effort to put this right. The place itself is lovely and has a great vibe, shame about the service!

Imagine The Great Gatsby era with a modern twist then you have a recipe for an upmarket looking Bistro complete with a pianist playing subtle modern tunes on a grand piano.

We visited on a very busy Friday . The restaurant was very quiet which we thought was a bad sign but decided to give it a try anyway. We had the set lunch menu. The soup was very good and the fish and chips also was cooked well and presentation good. I had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc which I have to say was excellent. However, the whole experience was let down by a rather peculiar and sad ambience in the dining hall. It wasn’t helped by the total lack of enthusiasm on the part of the serving staff , one of whom , an Italian chap , had obviously had a personality bypass at birth. When we had finished our mains we had to wait some time for service as the waiters were busy discussing their private lives and the schedule for the next shifts. I wouldn’t go back and it’s a pity that just a lovely space and good food is let down by very poor management and couldn’t care less waiters.

We went here with another couple and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We had a long leisurely drink beforehand in the very comfortable bar area and then moved over to the restaurant. The menu is succinct and unpretentious, the prices were pleasingly good and the quality of the food was excellent. As was the service. Thank you Morgan, the manager who waited on us attentively and with good humour. A great night out.

A big investment has been well spent creating an impressive large Bistro environment. Good menu, and good service....just let down by a rowdy atmosphere when we were there; as we were leaving one table were loaidng singing along to a song they had pursuaded the poor pianist to play. Felt a bit like a noisey pub the a bubbling bistro atmosphere

I am a local to Holmes Mill and visit most weeks. When it opened there were many complaints about the food, but I thought the new business needed to bed in and I have never judged them too harshly.

Just been to the Brasserie bar at Holmes Mill for a cocktail. Waited 13 minutes before any of the bar staff came to our end of the bar to serve us - just carried on serving new customers at the other end. Staff running around like headless chickens looking for glasses and cocktail ingredients which were both in short supply.. Took advantage of the free cocktail on offer and now enjoying rest of the evening in an alternative bar where the service is exemplary and our custom is valued. Need to do some basic training in customer service at Holmes Mill before we go back. Must try harder.

We had dinner here last night and can thoroughly recommend the restaurant. The dinning room was not especially busy and the staff coped easily, once we had attracted the attention of a waiter service was friendly and efficient with no undue delays.

Our second visit here after having a great meal last October. The food was still of a good standard although I think the steaks are a little on the high side cost wise. Wine choice is OK not the best and prices are the usual mark up. The service was a bit slow as others have stated, but the food made up for it. Another good meal and we will be back soon.

Had the special 3 course menu on a Tuesday and it was absolutely delicious. Not huge portions but filled us both up. We had mentioned at the time of booking that we would be celebrating our 25th anniversary and, at the end of the meal, they brought out a plate decorated with chocolate icing wishing us Happy 25th Anniversary and two chocolate mousses!

Unlike some of the reviews on here I cannot complain about the staff. Four of us had lovely meals this afternoon and the waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was excellent and the ambience just exceptional. Not many others in but surely that will improve as it becomes more well known. Keep it up. Thankyou

I made the 40 mile journey through the ribble valley to sample their famous steak puddings…absolutely delicious, the meat was just melt in your mouth, the rest of the food was fantastic, onion rings to die for !! Portions were huge, managed some of my sweet that was also superb, was literally bursting on the drive home but very happy indeed, highly recommended and the staff and service was also second too none, 100% will return again..thanks

I have been in this restaurant many times and always really enjoyed food and service but not last time. On 5th of November was birthday of my daughter. I thought we could have a good time and good food but… The service was terrible. We have wait to see the waiter around 20 minutes. Then my daughter went to the bar and order the bottle of wine. The menu we talked from the next table. A few minutes later the waitress wearing leggings and t-shirt brought the wine, put on the table and walk away. She didn’t ask if the wine was ok, didn’t open it and said nothing. After we waited another half an hour to be asked what we would like.I have ordered fish pie and my daughter ordered sea bass. What a disappointment? Her sea bass was on dry side with with too much over fried samphire. My fish pie looked and tasted more as chowder. Just bland. In the end we have told staff about our bad experience that evening.

My wife and I came across this quaint tea shop quite by chance, as it is on the outskirts of the village and laid back from the road behind a small cobbled forecourt. On entering we found it contained eight tables and quite busy for a Saturday afternoon. We ordered coffees and sandwiches which were made to order and absolutely delicious.I shall definitely return and tell my friends about it.Im not certain of the opening hours,so will need to check before I return.I thoroughly recommend it.

I tried to order a full English breakfast without a few items and they wouldn’t swap me anything and tried charging me a extra 1.50 so I thought man 10er for my breakfast that’s a bit steep . So just got bacon and sausage baton and I got one bacon one sausage for 5.50 and to top it off it was cold and chippy sausage. Joke off a place will not be going again . And there is dogs running around in the kitchen
