I think the one star reviews are being a bit harsh - perhaps just an off night here and there? We visited at the end of August, a family of seven, and had a classic pub dinner. Portions were decent/large, the pie I had was v.good (proper filling to pastry ratio). Drinks were from Titanic (who own it I think) and were all well kept. Starters, mains and a couple of desserts plus drinks for 7 came in at something like £170 which is pretty reasonable. In a nutshell, solid pub grub and not much to grumble about (except perhaps the toilets 😅)

Brought the family here for a birthday get together, spent just under £200 on food and 2 rounds of drinks for 6. Got to say this is the worst meal we have ever had! I have emailed them too with no reply. No one could eat their meal. The lady who served us was lovely but that's about all. Avoid at all costs

Disappointed this time Been to eat at the old poet a number of times and it was always great. The special was always the pie which was served in huge slices and tasted great It’s changed to individual pies and nowhere near as good. The pastry was very hard and the filling not very tasty. One of the party had the cheese onion and potato pie which was just mash potato when usually it’s sliced potato so that was even more disappointing. Overall I wouldn’t come back to eat and I wouldn’t recommend

My friend and I ordered a cheese and chutney sandwich and chips. The cheese was tasteless. The bar lady kept telling me it was a mild cheese sandwich when I complained. The word ‘mild’ didn’t appear on the menu. The chips were dreadful. Obviously frozen and equally tasteless. We both left half the sandwich and decided not to take it home. With a drink they charged £21.25. Daylight robbery for such anaemic fare. I’m being generous when I gave them a poor rating. Won’t be returning.

Booked a table on Saturday night. We ordered a drink at the bar and said that we'd got a table booked which we were shown too. We was then left sat wondering where menus were and where to order. We went to the bar to grab another drink and asked for menus which were given to us at the bar, still waiting for our order to be taken. We went back to the bar and ordered at bar. Food was lovely but could do with someone front of house leading the show, and maybe a few more options on the menu.

A lovely proper pub. Visited twice during our recent stay in Ashover. Pub is very cosy and homely. A welcoming fire with lovely friendly staff and locals. Mulled wine by the fire in the afternoon was a nice treat. Then evening dinner was yummy. My husband loved his pie and the lasagna was good too. Selection of wine was tight but we enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc. Will definitely visit again.

There was a time when myself and my ex would visit the Old Poets every Saturday evening for a meal and a pint. Back then it was excellent with wonderful food and a great selection of ales. Now, after the Titanic takeover, things have most certainly gone downhill and the chances of me eating there again are slim. A group of four of us visited for a friends birthday on a weekday evening. I ordered the steak pie with mushy peas and chips. Another of our group went for the lasagne. No complaints about my pie, it was very nice. However, the chips were tiny, hard and crispy, not very good at all. The lasagne was bland and I have had far, far better from a packet cooked in the microwave at home. As for the ales, it's the same old selection of Titanic beers these days with just a couple of guests. A far cry from what it once was. For a dark ale drinker like myself, it's Titanic's Plum Porter which never, ever seems to change, even though Titanic brew some excellent stouts, they never make an appearance other than the keg variety. My advice is not to bother. Take your money elsewhere.

Since Titanic Brewery took over there is a happier atmosphere and team dynamics are very good. Still an amazing selection of local real ales and ciders. Living locally we've been coming here for years but hadn't visited for some time. This was partly due to Covid but also because after the previous owners retired the food especially went down a pretty steep hill. Thinking we'd pop back to see if things had picked up it's a shame to report that the pub is no longer what it was. Now owned by the Titanic brewery there is no longer the wide array of excellent Ashover beer that was once brewed here alongside the other regular and excellent Oakham ales that used to be on tap. Our meal was disappointing. The vegan lasagne ordered by my wife was off so she opted for the beef. On it's arrival we weren't sure whether it was a lasagne or some kind of cottage pie. There appeared to be no pasta in it. It was the strangest lasagne I'd seen - an odd, glutenous, amorphous and tasteless mush. The waitress peered into it Basil Fawlty like and then took it to the kitchen only to return and tell us that there was indeed pasta in there but that "it's vegan pasta"?? She said a fresh one would be sent. The barmaid then abruptly decided to inform us that the chap on the table next to us had the lasagne and there was nothing wrong with it. Inappropriate and quite rude really. A new lasagne arrived. Fragments of pasta were located but I think the issues was that it was previously frozen and now reheated or simply had been warmed through too many times and was now just a mess. My wife ate half of it as she was hungry. I had the steak and ale pie and wolfed it down as I was starving. The pie was nice and meaty but had not been cooked sufficiently and the inside of the pastry was undercooked and slimy. Chips were greasy. As we sat finishing our drinks we were alarmed to see the chef appear at the bar with his bum hanging out the back of his tracksuit bottoms leaving us with concerns re food hygiene and safety in the kitchen. We left swiftly and won't be back. It's a shame - a pint of Oakham Citra by the fire and a nice meal used to be a lovely treat here but no more. The Black Swan up the road gets great reviews and will be our next port of call!

We stayed here for 2 nights in the Captain Smith's room, which we were told had just been refurbished. The room itself was lovely, we even had our own bottle of Captain Smith's beer to try, which was very nice. As for the pub, the managers are warm and welcoming, nothing was too much for them, even helping us with our bags, which were quite heavy. We ate at the pub, which we'd describe as fresh traditional pub food, although the sirloin steak I had was exceptional. Breakfasts were either cereals or full English, very hearty and well cooked. All in all a great two nights away, would definitely visit again, even if it was just for the view from the beer garden.

I am not in the habit of writing reviews however, after myself and my husband decided to have a meal in the Poets which I might add is our local, bearing in mind we used to eat there at least once if not more a week, the food has gradually been in decline, with new owners our expectations were high hoping that it would go back to being a decent place to eat. What can I say the fish was practically non existent and you needed a chisel to get through the batter, the peas were cold and the chips, well nothing to right home about. I chose fish and chips mainly because it's something which has to be cooked rather bought in and reheated from a catering company. We were not the only ones of this opinion the people sat next to us said they had eaten there a few weeks ago with the same experience, some people they knew came in and were going to eat until they advised them otherwise and they walked out. We have a holiday let and are often asked where to eat definitely not here unless there is a vast improvement. Having said all this we were reimbursed for our meal but would have preferred a decent meal instead.

We all had the carvery (each of us choosing a different meat) all of which were excellent. I chose the roast pork which was tender and succulent. We served ourselves from a great selection of veg, including roast and mashed potatoes, Yorkshires, and cauliflower cheese. The food was delicious and great value for money - only £6.95 for the small portion, which was more than ample for me. The full size is only £9.95 if you have a hearty appetite. The pub was very busy but all the staff were very attentive to our needs. I will definitely be returning and would recommend a visit.

Called in for lunch with a friend on15 November as I was impressed with the menu on the website. Although not a vegetarian I opted for the Vegetable and Stilton Crumble as it sounded tasty and different. Oh dear what a let down it was! No sign of any vegetables except a small fingernail size piece of broccoli and no crumble topping. Basically it was an inch thick melted cheese sauce in an oversized dish. Although my comments were relayed back to the kitchen by the very pleasant crew member there was no apology or explanation. I wish I'd chosen the large fish, chips and peas instead which looked lovely on the next table.

We have been eating, drinking and occasionally staying at the Old Poets for years and even choosing cottages in the village for holidays with the family because the pub used to be so good. That was then, and the shame is that it has been taken over by Titanic so the choice of beer is limited to their range and a few guests non of which are particularly special or worth trip out for. Equally disappointing is the quality of the food which on our visit was so bad a friend and I returned it. To be fair they did provided a full refund, and we went elsewhere to eat. The Fish and Chips used to be excellent however under the new management it was of very poor quality, with thin tasteless batter, under cooked chips, and sloppy rather than mushy peas. The pub was deserted apart from a few people sat outside, I can't see this place surviving long as it is no longer a destination and there is little to differentiate it from the other two pubs in Ashover. Such a shame.

We met friends for an evening meal. Bar staff and waitresses were friendly and helpful. Ordered starters which were fine. We were told there was a wait for main courses as a large party was in before us. We didn't mind this. One friend ordered a 'large' fish and chips. It had never been a large in its life! Unfortunately the batter was dark brown and looked burnt. The chips looked unappealing and tasted old and stale. The waitress returned the meal to the kitchen. The replacement (not what you'd expect for £10.95...goodness knows what the small £7.50 option was like) was no better but this time the batter was soggy and greasy and still was inedible. Another friend ordered three cheese risotto with spinach and mushrooms. It lacked tasted and contained no spinach! Two of us had Spanish omelette with chicken and chorizo and salad. For some reason only one omelette arrived. To the credit of the waitress, she did mention the other was on its way. About 10 mins later mine arrived. It was hot but I felt it again lacked flavour. I thought it may have had pepper, onion, herbs, even potatoes in it but it was quite basic. The risotto and the fish and chips werent eaten and when we spoke to the manager, he offered to replace the meals, although I didn't feel there was a great deal of warm customer service there. By this time we'd had enough and didn't want to try anything else so two meals were deducted from the bill. What really disappointed us was how the person in the kitchen was happy to serve sub-standard looking and tasting food. I'm not usually one to complain but it really spoilt the evening. Needless to say we won't be going back.

I had the specials menu belly pork which was utterly delicious , and my husband had the hake dish with capers ,also from the specials board , which he was very happy with. The sharing desert of chocolate brownie, panacotta , shortbread and chocolate ice cream was to die for . All in all a very pleasant evening at The old Poets Corner , Ashover. A big thank you to all the staff involved. Cheers.

One of the things that strikes me about Poets Corner is that I've never walked and there's nobody there. That says a lot about a pub.

Know this pub very well. Been loads of times but not to eat. A family party to celebrate an 18th birthday. 21 people pre-ordered the food. After the few starters the mains came in dribs and drabs brought by one poor waitress. The first meals were finished by the time the last ones got there. 2 of the burgers were so salty they were inedible to anyone but the 2 starving young lads that ate most of them. The Hunters chicken was pathetic and the pie was 1. Luke warm and 2. A very small portion with rubbish part warm chips.

Went here for food and what a lovely place. Good old traditional pub with two open fires and locals with their dogs sleeping in front of the fire. It was good to see.......

There's a nice restaurant in the pub, serving a range of interesting and tasty meals, all cooked on-site. However, it's the bar menu that's truly unique, having in addition to the usual pub snacks, it's own local sausage menu. There are good choices for vegetarians and the beer is outstanding (they have their own brewery). Excellent place to eat and drink.

The place itself is comfortable and warm, there was three fires on the cold night we were there. We booked a table but decided to eat in the bar. The menu was OK offering the same old same old. We ordered and had a bit of a wait about 35 minutes, we weren’t but could have been a problem if you were in a hurry. The food came, only tepid, the mash was lumpy and my friend found something inedible in her pie (looked like a twig??). Maybe should have complained but they had our money so we left. I don’t think we will be going back there are plenty of places offering a better meal for less money.

This used to be our favourite place 5 years ago. It was very disappointing going back First thing noticed a large TV was in a prominent position above the fire place in an area that used to be our favourite place (little cosy corner near the fire). Whilst I understand the need for TV's in pub's... not the best place to put it.

Very friendly staff and local folk gave the bar area quite a buzz , dogs are very welcome. Good choice of menu food ordered was most plentiful just couldn't manage a pud ! Dog enjoyed treats. We really felt at home here on returning another day on our break unfortunately the old poets was overflowing with customers based in a tiny village the car park and surrounding curb areas were jam packed . Would throughly recommend and hope to return in the near future to visit the restaurant. Please don't be put off about parking ( they may of held a special occasion that day on the restaurant maybe ?). If your staying in ashover it's a warm welcome.

Don't ever go to the trouble of booking a table here, as they just take all your info over the phone then guess what? They give your table to some one else and say you can eat in the bar. If I wanted to do that then I wouldn't have booked would I? Then just go on and ignore me and start serving some one else. Not good and won't be going back. The staff have no customer service skills at all.

Disappointing here. Stopped for lunch after a dog walk. Baguette. Baguette was one of those pre-bake things from the supermarket, which wasn't cooked properly, a bit of meat stuffed in, and that was it. Pale looking and tasteless, won't be going here again. Had to wait a long time at the bar for drinks as only one person serving. 4 of us in the group - all wished we'd gone to the Black swan instead. Staff were polite and friendly (plus point).

Welcoming village pub. The lunch and the evening meal were superb. All of the staff have been so helpful. Nothing was too much like hard work. The rooms were clean and had a touch of decadence.

Went to poets corner for Sunday lunch with my family as they are new to the area, the staff where rubbish didn't know what day it was, meat was chewy, hygiene in the toilets... well they don't have any. Dramatically gone down hill since I last visited. Afraid I will not be returning.

Dropped in during a walk and was absolutely impressed at the numbers of real ciders available. However given this is the home of Ashover cider I was not surprised - their cider is as good as anything I have ever tasted - real cider with nothing added. The beef sandwich was awesome. Only surprising thing thing was that I continued my walk rather than savouring the best that Ashover Cider had to offer!

Got into our accommodation late Sunday and drove up to Ashover for dinner only to find the first 2 pubs don't open their kitchen at night. Feeling panicky we headed down to the Old Poets and happily they still did. However Sunday night is Curry Night (but do have a limited pub fare). One of us had Bangers and mash and rest an afore mentioned Curry. All delicious.Friendly atmosphere, lots of locals (lots of dogs) and a nice old stone building, as is all of Ashover. So, not the best you'll ever go to but perfectly OK.

Lovely village with old fashioned pub serving good food. If you've been walking it's just the way to end your morning or afternoon. Real ales for those lucky enough to not be driving . Dog friendly in the bar and a separate dining area free of dogs and children . The meat pie is delicious.

It's a few years now since I was last at the Old Poets. At the weekend, we returned to Ashover for the church flower festival and decided to have lunch at the Poets with the family. The place is still the same welcoming hostelry we remember. Some folk may consider it very dated and a bit gloomy but it's actually very atmospheric even at lunchtime. We were allocated a large table and the service for the nine of us was surprisingly quick. Most of us chose hot sandwiches and there was universal agreement that they were a delight. The bowls of chips reminded us of the many quiz nights we once spent at the place. All in all, a great pleasure to be back. Thanks to Kerry for her kindness and great enthusiasm. She's a great ambassador for the inn.
