We just enjoyed a fantastic takeaway from the Old Plough to celebrate a birthday (no counting) while in COVID-19 lockdown- beautifully presented with an unusual level of care. Booked for a specific time and ready on the dot! Main courses- filet mignon, stroganoff and teriyaki salmon all absolutely delicious (steaks perfect as ordered ) with veggies as good as if straight out of the kitchen. Puddings were just as good. Amazing service and food. Thank you very much!!

Have used the Plough for many a Sunday Roast before the lockdown. The takeaway roast they are serving now during the lockdown is just as good. It really is worth the trip to collect it. Very professional the way the food is loaded into your car. When you get home the food is still piping hot, depending where you live.We have the Turkey and Beef with , roast potataoes, new potatoes and plenty of veg and Yorkshire. It really does save all that washing up and certainly tastes better than home made. The gravy is worth a mention. Well done Plough, always good to eat in but takeaway is a pretty good substitute.

I don't really want to review this place because it has limited seating and if I review it too well, I won't be able to get in next time. The food is probably the best bar food I have EVER had and its not expensive. I absolutely love the Beef Stroganoff. All mains served with 8 veg - not on your plate but silver service. Please do not book as I want to be able to get in next time !

Had the 3 course Sunday Lunch which was delicious. Prawn coctails to start were tasty, but the bowl they are served in are wobbly due to the small central bowl and very wide rim. The mains were Pork (with excellent crackling) and delicious lamb.... all served with the massive choice of wonderfully delicious veg. The Creme Brulee and the pofitrols were also very tasty and a tasty end of the meal, finshed off with a brew. One of the best Sunday lunches in the area and well recommend that you put the Old Plough as next on your list.

This place was recommended for Sunday lunches, with advice that we have never seen so many vegetables on offer. So, off we set from Central Cambridge, probably some 20 miles of driving, each way. The place is an old inn, in a village well outside Newmarket. It is nicely kept, spotless, has ample parking, a nice terrace and has not been bashed around with modernisation. Three course Sunday lunch is £24, including coffee,so quite good value. We both ordered pork (the crackling was weird, not chewable, and may have been bought in.) Silver service on the veg, by a small army of staff who descended upon us. I think I counted eight veggies, lots of choice and quite well cooked. Apparently they don't do lunches in the week, only dinner, and I am unfamiliar with their menu. Was it worth a 40 mile round- trip ? Possibly. We eat out 7 days a week and know lots of places in the county. If we lived near Newmarket we might put it on our regular haunts list but it was maybe a bit average overall. Nothing wrong with that.

I wanted to celebrate our Anniversary at The Old Plough last year but was unable to get a reservation as this restaurant is quite difficult to get into without booing in advance, but I was lucky enough to book this year. We honestly weren't sure what to expect but had heard the food, especially the servings of vegetables, was incredible. Upon walking in, it seemed like a small, dim-lit pub/bar. We were quickly greeted by asking what we would like to drink. After receiving our drinks, we were led to the back have of the restaurant where the tables were set incredibly elegantly as if we entered a fine dining restaurant, yet in a very well decorated pub atmosphere- very unique and lovely. The starters and main specials were all incredible selections along with the actual menu. The starters were delicious and flavorful. For our main dishes, my husband chose the halibut (seafood and fish selection is like no other we have seen) and I ordered the sirloin off the regular menu. Both were cooked to perfection and the steak is the best I have had so far. The vegetables blew us away with the selection and taste and we ate them first over our main because they were so delicious. The meals were so entirely filling but I needed to try a dessert as the selection on the menu was immense. I opted for the vanilla brûlée and the flavor exploded in my mouth. Incredible! A fantastic selection of beverages as well! The staff was incredibly attentive and so polite and the same with the owner Tony! This place is like nothing we have ever experienced in England. The food is on point, the ambiance can not be compared to anywhere else and the entire experience was exceptional! I don't think we can choose to go anywhere else when wanting to eat out! The Old Plough at Ashley has an amazing reputation and an avid following, however this gastro pub wasn't for me. The barman (owner ?) is quite grumpy and when he asks you if everything with the meal is alright, its more a challenge than a question. The portion sizes are far too big and it put my wife and I off. I started with duck spring roles with hoisin sauce and my wife had deep fried Brie with sweet chilli sauce. The spring roles were average texture/taste but he deep fried Brie was very nice. But each starter could have served 2 people. For main I ordered a shoulder of lamb and my wife ordered pork belly. My lamb was far too big, but the disappointment was that it was no different to a lamb shank I cook at home. Cooked well enough but fairly simple. The gravy had little flavour unfortunately. The veg was nice and plentiful except the cauliflower cheese whose sauce was floury and thin. Unfortunately the pork belly was not that nice (still massive) the crackling was soft, the flavour was not there and it contained gristle. Again each main could have served 2 people. When my second pint of caffreys beer arrived it had an odd taste (unlike the first) so I left it and asked for tap water. We both ordered pudding creme brulee and raspberry mille feuille. The brulee had a lovely creamy, vanilla flavour with the beautiful torched sugar top. Not 100% set which showed it was home made. My pudding tasted, ok, at best, although the raspberry's were fresh, but it was rather difficult to eat. Again each pudding could have served 2 people. I find it difficult to grade the Old Plough because there were a lot of positives (its a lovely looking place), however there were issues with every dish ranging from size to taste. If I'm honest I would advise you to try it for yourself, its just that you wont see me there.

We chose to go here after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent, and as many reviewers commented, the quantity and quality of the vegetables was very good. When the food came, a small army of vegetable bearing staff came trailing behind. The price is slightly expensive but you get what you pay for and it is well worth the price.

It's been 4-5 years since I ate at this restaurant and then it was fantastic with the best meat cuts and the best fish a menu could have and the amazing food and wine has not wavered one bit. Now I live closer I can come more often! The quality of food is amazing. For me being a fish eater is a good try for any restaurant's capability and the Plough delivers wonder ful choices of fish and seafood and the queen of all, Turbot. One word of advice.....make sure you are hungry. The Plough serves generous portions of both meat an vegetables and being a bit of a veggie, the choice and quality is amazing. So, what about the staff and experience? The ambiance is just what you want from a traditional pub restaurant but to the highest quality food and wines and if you are a connoisseur, this is your nirvana. The staff are so professional and perfectly on point and friendly. If you can't make it, they will provide a doggie bag complete with a hand drawn doggie pic signature. That's the level of attentive detail this restaurant goes to to make a complete, fun and enjoyable time.We are so happy to be local enough to be a regular!

Visit here whenever I am in the area and it is impossible to fault. The atmosphere is lovely, olde worlde and comfortable. The food is absolutely delicious, keep losing count of the vegetables that are offered with Sunday lunch but it's about 14! The service is very efficient so the food is always hot. Three courses for £22.00 is an amazing price for the quantity and quality of the food. Wine at only £4.50 a glass and free unlimited coffee makes it an absolute must for me when I'm staying in the area. Very popular so booking on a Sunday is a must.

What a brilliant place! The food is fantastic, we ate here 5 days on the trot commuting from Newmarket most days. The Sunday lunch was the best we have ever experienced, fab meat and a choice of maybe 16 veg too. All the staff were attentive and the standard of food exceptional and totally consistent.

Again this pub never disappoints. I took my sister and brother in law visiting from Queenstown, NZ and my two Canadian friends visiting from Mazatlan, Mexico. It was 'the best pub meal they've ever had!' The lamb shank was so delicious. Great sized portions for those that like a good feed.

Last visited 10 years ago and after a couple of previously failed reservation attempts suddenly recalled how good it had been tried again and got in; last minute too. The decor was the same , staff and menu the same but in this instance not to any detriment. This was a meal of quiet efficiency where every ingredient tasted as it should. Snails, huge Dover Sole , Rhubarb crumble all fab. The broad beans were particularly tasty. My wife enjoyed her Brie Parcels , Tournedos Rossini and said the Coffee Ice Cream was the best she had tasted. The bottle of Sancerre was an excellent example. The bill was excellent for the quality of ingredients. We will not leave it so long and are planning s return with friends and family

We were visiting the area from Wales and just happened to drive past and thought we'd give it a try. From the outside (at least in the dark) you'd have no idea what kind of place it was, it looks more like a pub which is why we asked if they did food when we entered.Luckily it was a French Restaurant. The menu wasn't huge which is always a good start but the menu items were clearly all well established. We both ordered the signature dish and skipped the starters. We were ushered to our table within 10 minutes of ordering and the food was served without delay. The staff presented and served the veg of which there was a large choice.Service was second to none. The food was amazing, a first class experience.Whilst I've read some other reviews suggesting the restaurant is dated, I disagree 100%. It may have an old feel to it, but it was clean and tidy. I've been to plenty of places that are tired and old, this is certainly not tried but 100% old, nothing wrong with that its even in the name!I think if you're a member of the PC Brigade go elsewhere as you'll be disappointed. If you want great food then visit the Old Plough.

Outstanding quality food at a reasonable price in the bar (under £15). Soft drinks were quite expensive (£3.50 each for pints of soda and lime/black but more flavoursome than usual.) We would highly recommend eating here. You can eat in the restaurant for a wider range of higher price meals but in the bar you benefit from the same quality of cooking, especially the outstanding range and quality of vegetables -delicious.

Sunday lunch. Great choice if you like retro, which we do. Prawn cocktail, melon, soup etc. Four choices of meat, and about 12 choices of veg, all perfectly cooked. This is a set menu, and our only suggestion is that perhaps an option of 2 courses or 3 would be nice. However, although I felt quite full, all three courses were delightful. Would certainly recommend.

We visited after my sister heard amazing things about the Sunday roast dinners. We were not disappointed. It's a set 3 course menu (choices for all courses, but set price at £22). Food was really good and well presented. The mains were like you would make at home and the staff kept bringing out more and more vegetables! We were all stuffed by the end of it.The staff are all very friendly and the place is very pleasant. I hope I get to go there again.

Had the pleasure of using this restaurant for 3 nights whilst staying at a local B&B. I found the food to be outstanding at very reasonable prices. Privately owned and obviously very popular with the locals. The host has a very dry sense of humour, and when you see past that he can be quite funny. I would not hesitate in going back there again when next in the area. One thing to mention is that they do not open on a Monday, so if staying locally you will probably have to travel into Newmarket for your evening meal, as I did.
