We go every week for the quiz on a Monday night and the staff are always friendly and helpful. I also go with my book club every few weeks and if the music is a bit loud they are more than happy to turn it down in the area we are sitting so we can have our chat. It’s a cozy place especially with the fire going in the winter.

Had an absolutely amazing meal here this evening. We whipped in for a quick one before tea and spotted one of the lovely bar staff tucking into some great looking food, we were sold and quickly asked for some menus. Food didn’t take too long and was piping hot on arrival. I had one of the specials which was amazing, but the sausage and mash was apparently next level. Would recommend a visit, the log fire roaring and the home cooked food is a spectacular combination.

On visiting this establishment with a few of my friends on a Saturday evening we were rudely asked to leave for being too loud in a pub on a weekend evening rather than just being asked to keep the volume down. Personally I don’t think we were loud at all and the landlady just had an attitude. It really put a dampener on mine and my friends evening.

What did I let myself in for. Hideous food - cheap I’ll admit (but the quality was abysmal). The mash was lumpy, my friends lasagne had no cheesy white sauce just grated cheese. Tables were sticky. Drinks were ok, but no table service. Dark haired lady on the bar didn’t seem to pay any attention apart from regulars she was talking to. Wouldn’t go again, we weren’t made to feel welcome. We travelled from Derby and stopped off here - never again sorry.

We visited here with four friends for an evening Christmas get together. The Old Packet House is a quaint olde world pub, not huge so would recommend booking ahead. We had pre-ordered from a very generous menu and paid £5 deposit each. We were seated next to a roaring fire, table festively decorated and candle lit. Starters arrived promptly and were delicious (garlic mushrooms and homemade tomato soup). The main courses didn’t disappoint, four of us chose steak which was cooked to individual taste. Two chose Turkey, which was moist and tasty. Seasonal veg, crispy roast potatoes and either peppercorn sauce or thick turkey gravy accompanied. We all cleared our plates. Desserts were equally delicious, homemade sherry trifle and fruit crumble and cream were chosen. What a feast, and all for £19.95! The hosts and staff were friendly and helpful, even on a busy night and I would definitely recommend a visit - I’ll certainly be going back.

We went for Sunday lunch, one of party was vegetarian but apart from a chilli nothing else was offered. The waitress said they could do the roast without meat and with extra veg, when we asked if it would be any cheaper she didn't think so, but then came back and said they would knock £1 off. Surely the meat element would be worth more than a £1? Anyway we went for that. When the meals came there was a lovely assortment of vegetables, but nothing special. There was so little mashed potato it wouldn't have filled a tablespoon and was very dry. The extra veg for our friend consisted of one extra roast potato!! We were not impressed at all with the food and the friend who suggested we visited was embarrassed at having recommended the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful but they were let down by the food. The restaurant only had a couple of other diners so that spoke volumes to us.

Made a special visit as you were a recommended dog friendly pub on a couple of web sites, including your own. I know it says on your web site that dogs were 'welcome in the beer garden and tiled areas of the pub' but when we were told to sit in the corner, on a couple of uncomfortable bar stools, right next to the door and leaning up against a fruit machine, we decided to take our business elsewhere. Really not dog friendly at all.

This is a nice looking, traditional inn. A bit ragged about the edges but that adds to its charm in a way. Unfortunately it is massively let down by the food.I stopped in there for lunch midweek and had the vegetable soup and the hunters chicken. Both dishes were of a standard you'd expect from a motorway services or cheap roadside diner; edible but obviously prepared by someone for whom cooking is just a chore. Both dishes were microwaved way beyond an acceptable temperature - food only gets this hot in a microwave so any claims that they don't microwave can't be true. It took 15 minutes for the soup to cool enough to eat and the cheese on the hunters chicken had been super-heated to the point where it was starting to break down - see the photo. The chips were dry and contained way too many scraps. The salad was the only thing that hadn't been massacred. If all you want is a drink with a traditional old world atmosphere then this place is fine but it's painfully obvious that they're not really interested in doing good food.

My husband and I have eaten here 3 times recently. The food is basic home cooked pub grub (no microwaved food here) & the value for money is unbelievable. The menu is varied with just the right amount of choices. The staff are friendly & helpful & the dining area is comfortable & attractive. The plates were hot, which is an important detail, and one on which so many places fail. On our first visit I had an omelette & an extra filling was added free of charge. I was able to have a warm, crusty, white roll with my soup, instead of ciabatta or brown seeded bread (which is what is usually offered nowadays) genuine, from the pod, garden peas, and, best of all, traditional sherry trifle with (wonder of wonders) fruit at the bottom. We both agreed that this trifle was the best we could remember tasting, and was such a refreshing change from cheesecake, panna cotta & chocolate mousse. Our bill for 2 lagers, a glass of wine, 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts & 2 cappuccinos was an incredible £34.20. Desserts were £2.50 each & the coffees only £1.30. Last weekend we went for Sunday lunch & an extra jug of gravy was supplied to every table (a nice touch). This was only our third visit & I was amazed that the martini rosso I had requested on my first visit, which was not stocked, was now available. This is surely a gesture on a par with that of the Ritz or the Savoy. I don't know anywhere else serving this quality of food for such value, so if you want a simple home cooked, delicious pub meal, try the Old Packet House. You won't be disappointed.
