We visited the old lamp room at midday on a Sunday. Staff were lovely, very accommodating & friendly. The building is quirky and an absolute vibe! We ordered the Sunday Dinners, they were banging, will definitely be coming back! xoxo

This place is a feast for the eyes from the amazing tables to the giraffe on the wall and the Harry Potter inspired room. We visited for afternoon tea and it was wonderful, the waitress who seated us, Helen, was amazingly friendly and efficient and the lady, Lynn I think we were told her name was, explained everything and presented the food really well. We had an endless supply of tea and coffee and the whole experience was amazing. It was a true treat.

We arrived for brunch and were seated quickly by friendly tattooed lady who found us a spot even though we didn’t have a booking. The menu is fab and the lady recommended the eggy toast with bacon, my partner had a full breakfast. The drinks arrived swiftly as did plenty of water for the table; it was a hot day. The decor is cool to look at which is good as the food took FOREVER which we found a little annoying bearing in mind we were the only customers inside to order food. When it did arrive it was AMAZING especially the eggy bread..so fluffy, but the wait ruined the experience a bit. Good job we didn’t have a train to get!

Good points: lovely decor, well cooked and presented food, good ingredients. Negatives: arrived to an almost empty restaurant and were not welcomed. Waited to be seated, then menus brought a few minutes later. Waited nearly half an hour for our breakfast/brunch although no other customers were waiting. I appreciate it is freshly cooked but it was very slow. Service was not particularly friendly and waitress tried to remove my husband's plate while he was still eating his toast. Found it rather expensive for what it was.

It doesn't matter whether we come for lunch, cake and a cuppa or afternoon tea, this beautiful little place never fails to be nothing short of delicious! We have never been disappointed with the quality of ingredients, atmosphere or attentive staff and look forward to every visit. Would highly recommend!

Our first visit after several recommendations. We pre-booked our afternoon tea for my birthday and wedding anniversary. The lady made a big thing of the celebrations when my husband booked (she even said she was writing it on the booking) but there was no mention when we visited. The afternoon tea was nicely presented and we also had a glass of fizz 🥂. Everything was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed it 😋. The plates were certainly empty when we finished so not quite as substantial as some afternoon teas that we have had.

This was the second time I have brought friends for the afternoon tea and it was delicious . A fabulous quirky place with excellent food. I do think however that the Old Lamp Room should abandon the awful Garden Room with its position next to the toilet so that their reviews will always be excellent. I was pleased that we were moved away from the unpleasant Garden Room.

Cannot recommend this place enough, Kasha and her team are amazing!!! They catered for 17 of us yesterday with the most beautiful afternoon teas. Amongst us we had a vegan, vegetarian and gluten free all of whom loved their afternoon teas and were taken aback at how they could be catered for individually. You cannot go wrong with the food, service, atmosphere and choice our very own gem in Cottingham. Thank you everyone xx

We visited for Sunday lunch very lucky to get a table only rung on the off chance . Usually booked up two weeks at a time . So you need to BOOK The staff were so friendly and the food was so delicious . We were so full we could not try the lovely cakes that were to die for . So WITH a promise to come back for afternoon tea 😥

Did a last minute booking for a Sunday roast for 5 people, was seated in the garden room. Food was beautiful we couldn’t fault anything. All served lovely and hot and to a very good standard. One of the best we have had in a while, staff were lovely & pleasant & nothing was too much trouble, we all ordered dessert, again faultless. My only criticism would be maybe put a more sturdy table & comfier chairs . Anyone reading the bad reviews on here ignore them & go and form your own opinion. We will be back it was lovely.

Very disappointing sadly went for breakfast with my family, very poor customer services verging on rude when asked for some water for the table was told they were bringing it with our hot drinks which took 25 mins for 5 drinks. Food was average not very well presented and only one tablespoon of baked beans with the breakfast, they didn’t check on us to see if everything was ok or offer us more drinks. Staff looked miserable no smiles or made to feel welcome at all, shame as good have been so much better.

Went for afternoon tea , absolutely delicious. Been here a few times for coffee and also takeaway afternoon tea . But had a voucher for Christmas for afternoon tea. Highly recommend. Sandwiches lovely and fresh, scones yum and the cakes were very tasty. Service by Sarah was greatl lovely and friendly, lovely cosy little venue.

We wasn’t disappointed the lady put a jug of water on the table which we didn’t have to ask for and the roast beef was delicious and it came with a jug of gravy the dessert were very tasty and the staff were very happy and friendly it’s small cafe and different inside and it’s best to book and we will be going back

We visited on a cold and wet December afternoon but our spirits were lifted once we entered the restaurant by the beautiful decor and lovely welcome. We had pre-ordered the festive afternoon tea which was superb and very inventive. Starters of pigs in blankets with roast potatoes were paired with a lovely warming soup. Salmon and Turkey sandwiches were on the middle layer of the cake stand with a superb selection of cakes and scones with a festive twist finishing off the tea. Various drinks are available to accompany the meal including a warming glass of mulled wine and fizz. All in all an excellent afternoon tea in delightful surroundings with attentive staff - thank you.

I'd been really looking forward to visiting here, as it appears to be highly regarded and recommended. However, whilst it is a unique setting, what an enormous disappointment it proved to be. We were seated in the tiny and very cold, "garden room", adjacent to the toilet! I have never sat in such uncomfortable seats! The menu was very limited, and pretty expensive at £11 for a sandwich (though mine was an 'open sandwich' with just one slice of bread!) with a little salad and some coleslaw. Having ordered the food, we had a very long wait until it was delivered. Unfortunately, we won't be going back.

I didnt want to post this but as our day was ruined it's a 1 star. I called on 3rd of December to book an afternoon tea for 4 for 7th December ( our wedding anniversary) and the recent 25th of our friends. We asked for a specific table ( we needed a decent table as my wife had a recent hip replacement and we needed a bit more room) at 2.30pm but as it was booked we changed the date for 6th at 2.30pm. We turned up today to find the table hadn't been reserved ! . We were taken to an outbuilding with no xmas atmosphere, next to a toilet open to view everytime someone decided to visit with a "picnic table" with matching chairs..which was totally unsuitable for my wife and just uncomfortable to sit on . When we complained that this was not what we agreed when booked the staff blamed the owner and just offered a more comfortable chair for my wife. There was no offer of any alternatives. Even a reduced fee and takeaway wasn't offered ( we may have settled for that) . In the end we decided that as they hadn't been informed of our needs they also may not have catered for a food allergy one of the group had and decided to leave. In the end after much ringing around we found an alternative but no one could provide the afternoon tea in a festive atmosphere we booked without 24hrs notice. So altho not ruined ( we have survived 38 years with worse) it was a terrible experience . The rating has to be 1* because we couldnt taste the food, the service was absolutely awful, not even a hint of remorse for the total mess ( apart from platitudes) and the atmosphere sat next to a toilet in what was effectively and outbuilding and cold room with minimal xmas atmos was abysmal. I heard good things about the old lamp room and after speaking to the owner I was looking forward to it but no, it fell flat on its face. ( revised post as original had glitched)

Everyone was so friendly & couldn’t do any more to make you feel welcome & comfortable. Freshly cooked food at exceptionally reasonable prices! Had afternoon tea one week then returned the following week for Sunday lunch. THE BEST gf cake I’ve ever had in 20 years! Thank you.

This place is fantastic for cake and coffee but decided to try something more substantial- or so we thought! Opted for an open toasted sandwich and was disappointed to be the recipient of ONE slice of bread with chopped ham and cheese on. Small salad garnish and small amount of coleslaw. All very tasty so credit where it’s due on that score but for £11 is extremely steep in price. Love the decor and quirkiness. I appreciate every place has overheads but I’ll stick to cake and coffee in the future

We went to old lamp room today for Sunday lunch with friends. Positive’s: pork quavers are delicious. Sunday lunch was really tasty and the gravy was gorgeous and so was the homemade Yorkshire pudding. The sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch custard is one of the nicest desserts I have ever had. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Not so positive: my friend asked for a glass of water but had to remind the staff 3x to bring it. The wine list is very limited and the red wine we had was not to our taste, it would be nice to have a choice of wine and have better quality wine (we don’t mind paying for good wine) My husband said his soup was only just warm he would have preferred it to be warmer. My friend asked for a coffee but despite asking twice it never arrived. On saying all of the above we will definitely be back because the positive feedback is far more important. We’re so lucky to have this place close to where we live and it really is worth a visit.

This is an amazing little secret find, wonderful cakes and nice large cups of coffee. We had the chocolate cake and the lemon curd cake and wished we had room to eat more as they were both outstanding. The trains are a bit loud when they depart but that adds to the ambiance so we had no complaints there, wish we had time to go for Sunday lunch, I’m sure it will be just as delicious. Will definitely go again next time we are in the area and can’t recommend it highly enough.

After a couple of failed attempts, we finally made it for lunch at The Old Lamp Room. And it did not disappoint! Such a charming and quirky place. Your eyes will be kept occupied. We had the Specials on the board. When they came, it looked delicious. But, it tasted even better! Compliments all around. Helpful and friendly staff. I cannot give any negatives. I would strongly recommend.

Wow, So glad we booked, this is a small and cosy venue with outstanding service and Fantastic food I had the ploughman lunch, followed by a scone with cream and jam. Very nice place, be sure to book We will be back there soon

Popped in for coffee and cake with a friend. The chocolate fudge cake I ordered came as chocolate orange cake and didn’t seem to me the homemade cakes that I had seen on social media (not a big issue). However, the coffee ( a latte and a cappuccino) was very watery and generally disappointing. The young waitress was friendly however the older lady was very stern and impolite. Wouldn’t return for these reasons.

A hidden gem in Cottingham! Welcoming and delightful discovery on a rainy Friday afternoon. Impromptu afternoon tea. Cake to die for …beautifully presented and warm friendly service thanks to Lynne and Sarah. Beautifully presented premises, a cosy oasis and imaginative use of space. Loved the ‘Singer’ sewing machine sink too! All in all five stars from me. Thoroughly recommended.

My daughter and I visited today for the first time, what a wonderful place, a quirky little place with lots of fascinating objects decorating the space. We had an afternoon tea which was absolutely delicious and plentiful, we actually had a voucher for this but it was great value, with unlimited tea and coffee and we treated ourselves to a glass of lovely pink prosecco. A big thank you to the very lovely and friendly Thomas and Sarah for their excellent customer service, we will definitely return 👍

I was waiting for someone to pick me up when I noticed this lovely decorated tea shop on the entrance to the station. So I popped in to see this lovely gem of a tea shop. I ordered an Earl Grey and seen the lovely cakes on show. I'm a traditionalist so opted for a cream scone and jam. I took a seat outside and my order was promptly served. One of the best cream scones I have ever tasted and presented on a beautiful plate. If your ever in the area do call into the hidden gem and you won't be disappointed

Went last year was pleasantly pleased with food and excellent service. Went again 12th APRIL 2023 WITH FAMILY GROUP 5 OF US. Although chef was delayed coming back from Spain and menu was limited we managed sandwiches, sausage rolls followed by excellent cake we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. An amazing experience in a well thought out venue with a giraffe looking though the wall through to finding something new every time, you must go to experience the old lamp room.
