After a hike across the Peak District, we were hoping to find a great roast dinner locally but somewhere new to our friends; unfortunately, the place we recommended and opted for this time was just average. We all felt the service was average; staff were lacking interest in general and when we were asking questions about the specials, they seemed unbothered. We all agreed it was overpriced for what we got too, which was a shame. One tiny carrot, 2 small roast potatoes, cold leeks and cabbage and a watery gravy. The beef was quite nice and the mash was well seasoned. I have been here before for drinks and snacks which we previously enjoyed but on this occasion, we left disappointed.

I feel obliged to comment given recent seemingly negative reviews. We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights and ate there for breakfast and evening meals Our room was the Ladybower and it was absolutely lovely. Breakfast was excellent in the annex and the staff were friendly, helpful and chatty. For evening meal, we had the pie, belly pork and chicken supreme between us and all very good. There was a fire going all day too. Given some recent comments about cleanliness, I have to say I saw the exact opposite and no issues at all. The staff work really hard and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

What a horrid place. Pity that landlord doesn't spend as much time sorting it out as he does responding to reviews. We had the so called pie. Not a pie, and tasteless bits of cat food swimming in off tasting beer

Perfect post-hike pub dinner spot. Great beer, food and service. The steak and ale pie was incredible - lots of delicious filling and thick crusty pastry. All the food was brought out quickly and piping hot, even though it was a busy Saturday night.

A short walk from the campsite made this our first choice. We visited for a drink on Wednesday and to have a look at the menu. We booked dinner for Thursday, to celebrate a birthday and did not regret the decision. We chose the lamb rump, calves liver and salmon. All cooked to perfection and brought to our table by Imogen, who was cheerful and had a great sense of humour. The evening was perfect and I would like to thank Imogen, Jack, Calvin and Ed for making it so. I will be back in 2026, for another celebration and hope to see you again. Thank you all so much.

Fantastic Experience all round - I would like to say that the "Old Hall" which is a local pub to my dads house is a very welcoming place and the landlord Rick and his team are second to none. My family visit on many occasions to eat and drink and I personally like to go and have a drink and the occasional meal when I am visiting family. The landlord Rick is one of the most friendliest people I have met and always welcomes me and I feel at home the moment I walk into the place. I would highly recommend the Old hall for a warm welcoming visit anytime to anyone that is thinking of going. Great times and great atmosphere. Thanks again. All the best, Matty

This review is of the restaurant, not the hotel. We stopped for a lunch...rather disappointed. The pork and stuffing 'sandwich of the day' was particularly poor. The pieces of pork didn't have any fat on them which resulted in dry and tasteless meat. When will cooks realise that it's the fat on pork, beef and lamb that adds the moisture and taste. And the toasted baguette that the pork and stuffing were in was also dry and dull. The chips and salad that accompanied the sandwich were quite pleasant, and the waitress was efficient and polite. There are several other places to have lunch in the area and we wished we had chosen another venue.

I and a friend had booked a twin en-suite room for one night. We were given room 1. The room was small, the bed comfortable but the bathroom was dire. The thick plastic shower curtain was in need of a good steam/hot wash to clean it and remove the smell. Dinner was delicious - we had chosen chicken supreme from the specials list and it came on hot plates. Breakfast the next day was dire with there only being a choice of two boxed cereals, no yoghurt, fruit or muesli. The breakfast room was so cluttered with paraphernalia that the TV ‘Hotel Inspector’ would have had a field day. I would have a beer and dinner again but not an overnight stay. Housekeeping take note!

I can't tell you about the rooms as I only went in to eat. Me and my husband had a few hours without the children so we was walking to another local food place but saw this first and thought we would sit in and eat here instead. I ordered pan seared lamb, mustard mash and veg, my husband ordered the burger and chips. Non to write home about. My husbands meal was ok and burger was small and small fries, they charged £16.50 for this and my meal wasn't worth the £20 price tag. The mustard was only on top of the mash (on the surface) but when underneath this the mash was very bland had to season with pepper to give taste. I had 2 pieces of lamb which was the size of my fork vertically and horazontally each. The lamb sat on top of the mash and there was more mash than meat. The veg and gravy was really nice. Luckily we had a starter to share or garlic bread as our meals didn't fill us up. I have to say despite the food not worth the price tag, the staff were very friendly, even though they asked us about our meal as we were paying, so couldn't really stop the transaction half way if not nearly fully paid for. For my meal, she said she will pass feedback to the chef regarding the mash. I think this place could really make it if meals met the price tag, I would love to come again in the future to re try this place as I like the atmosphere here and the friendly staff 😊

I can not say anything about the rooms, as we only had lunch in the bar. The pub/hotel has a small cafe attached to it, as it is a part of the business, the food and hygiene in the café is very good. The Old Hall Hotel is very tired and dirty, the staff, fed up, and the food is not worth the £18 a head. The pie was salty, the crust thick and dry, the filling lacking in flavour. The peas had been boiled within an inch of existence, and the chips had been cooked and reheated making them look like the fingers from an Egyptian mummy. Our plates were stone cold, and the food soon had a chill to it. The staff, all but one young lady, were very unprofessional and obviously did not have any interest in the job or being their. We received no greeting at all or asked if we would like a table, we were just ignored. There was no one at front of house to greet you. Although there were more staff than guests, everything seemed to be disorganised and muddled. We only eat some of the food as we were starving, otherwise, we would simply have walked out.

Shout out for the breakfast it was huge and amazing. Great stay at the Old Hall for the second time. Twin room small but has everything you need. Really comfy beds and pillows so had a wonderful night's sleep after a gig at the Devil's arse in Castleton which is about a 40 minute walk away. We got back to have a drink outside which has plenty of seating. There was a good choice of real ales which we enjoyed trying a couple of. The local clientele who were sitting outside made us feel really welcome and happily chatted away with us, then Rick the landlord came over to chat along with his gorgeous rescue dog Pickle, he was very interested in our experience of the Hotel and his personality along with his staff made our stay even more special. Shower in the morning was hot and good pressure with soaps provided. Lovely huge towels to wrap around any size Cafetiere with ground coffee is an absolute plus, with plenty of instant coffees, hot chocolate and Yorkshire tea if that's your thing. We decided to try Granny May's Tea Room, part of the Hotel for breakfast as they served a smaller option than what was available elsewhere. Local sausage was really tasty, good quality bacon. Everything cooked perfectly and delicious, we could not fault it. All in all, we would like to thank Rick and all his staff for their contribution to an amazing weekend, we will be back.

Nice looking bar. Was looking forward to a beer after a long walk, initially delighted to see Old Peculier on draft but sadly after buying a round all our pints were sour - bar staff refused to change them. I've been drinking real ale for 40+ years and Old Peculier is my favourite beer so I do know what I'm talking about. Very disappointed ☹️. Edit below. I emailed "Rick" (two weeks ago, no reply yet) who replied to this review to confirm all the details and gave him more information. And yes, it was that place. Seems he wasn't interested in replying just trying to deflect.

The pub was nicely busy but we were shown to our table straight away by a really friendly girl (I had booked, we wouldn't have got a table otherwise) There were 4 of us... 2 of us had the steak pie which for me was up there with the best I have eaten, 1 had lamb rump and the other had the bacon belly. Everyone totally cleaned their plates and commented on how good it was. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive and the beer and wine was also very good. I wouldn't hesitate to go back. If great customer service is what you are looking for, find somewhere else. We called in on a Sunday afternoon. We knew it would be busy and we were looking for something to eat (more in Hope than expectation - forgive the pun..!). There is a bar area for informal dining and a more formal area for reserved dining. All the tables in the bar area were taken and most of the tables in the more formal area had reserved signs on them. There was a table for two that did not have a reserved sign on so I politely asked the lady at the reservation area if we could take the table -'Not likely' was the less than friendly response with a sour face to accompany it. I said (again politely) that I thought it might be available as there was no reserved sign on it. After a brief check we were told that we couldn't have it (still no smile) and we could try in the bar area. I have no complaints about there being no tables available and we perhaps should have booked (although we were not sure what time we would be passing). I do however expect a modicum of friendly customer service. I am fortunate to be able to afford to eat out but I am not going to be providing my custom here again, I will spend it where it is appreciated. Very poor...!!

Visited for drinks Jan 2024 after a walk in the Peaks. I don't want to knock it here as we've been for the beer festival and it's been good. Mixed feelings this time, some good & some not so good. When we arrived the lad behind the bar was very friendly and made us feel welcome, certainly no complaints from this stance. My beer was towards the end of the barrel and not right so I took it back and they swapped it with no questions asked. The replacement (Quencher) was good. What didn't sit well for me was that the bar staff left the beer on that I'd brought back and didn't turn the pump clip around, so potentially other customers could've chosen it unknowingly. The beer pricing was also on the steep side - £5.15 for a 3.4% pale, whereas the Old P at 5.6% was similarly priced, if not the same. The Old P I can understand more so. It's a nice pub and handy if you've done a good walk in the Peaks. Well situated for the bus stop and train station down the road.

Great location, decent food, hot shower, no WiFi in room, room was below average for price. Some great bar staff, some not so good bar staff. It isn’t the fault of the pub that it’s right on the main road but it is worth mentioning that light sleepers might be affected by 18 wheelers thundering past the window, I wasn’t, but my travelling companion was. Sadly the most memorable part of my stay was being poked in the ribs by the weird guy who seems permanently clamped to the end of the bar, apparently I sat on his boyfriend’s stool…quite a surreal moment, what’s that all about?!

We have enjoyed each and every time because the atmosphere, the staff, the landlord Rick, the drinks and food and also the other clients we talked to were simply great. It was wonderful to have such a wonderful experience each and every time we visited, just like in 2015 and 2019. one of the worst b&b’s I’ve stayed in. we were in the bed & breakfast for a weekend. the breakfast was nice enough, but the rooms were absolutely filthy. towels and sheets were stained and covered in hair, crockery was dirty & the bathroom floor was covered in hair. there’s no WiFi, even though they listed it on their booking. and the staff were a little too nonchalant and very unwilling to help. on top of this, the pub neglects to mention they put on live music on a Saturday night until 12am which you can hear directly through the walls. and there’s a rooster that lives next door that woke us up at 5am on both mornings.

Excellent pub with great character, got some of the ale the had on tap, which was off. Brought this to the attention of the landlord and it was no problem he was off to change the barrel and pull through two good pints, exactly what you want to happen in that situation. The chips we got were also excellent. An ideal pub to go to on the way from Manchester to the Peak District.

We had room 7 for a night, it’s a little apartment, which is lovely and perfectly positioned. For those looking for en-suite facilities the loo is the other end of the apartment. More lighting is required at the back (before the gate) The bedroom is a lovely size and plenty blankets etc for extra warmth just felt a bigger bed would be nice as the room can take it. Guessing it’s small / standard double.
