The Old Gate in Calderdale

Busy place, pleasant helpful staff, food was lovely we had burger, chips there are different options to have with your meals so not just stuck with something your not keen on

We visited as part of a large group so had pre-ordered. The service was friendly, if a little slow but it was busy and there were a lot of us. The food itself was excellent.

Food was fabulous as always and excellent choice from the menu for gluten free! My ONE and only criticism is that despite ordering the same meal as my husband my portion size was different and my plate was lacking in “Sunday roast” extras that in my opinion are easily sourced to be gluten free. If things like stuffing,Yorkshire pudding etc are not available to all then the price should reflect this. I am sure if they were no longer available to others it wouldn’t be the case that they were just missing from the plate! Anyway I LOVE coming here it is just a little grumble that I have 😤

Great food, friendly staff and well priced. Lovely outside area and dog friendly. We ordered roasts, pie and fish grill and everyone was happy.

Visited May 2025. Super restaurant and bar in the centre of town. Delicious food, competitively priced but better than many of its contemporaries locally. Definitely recommended.

Had a lovely meal at The Old Gate. Recommended by a friend and was not disappointed. There were a few vegetarian options which is always good to see and they were quite varied, I had the vegetarian risotto which was delicious. Others in my group also very happy with their meals (a mix of vegetarian, fish and meat choices), the hand-cut chunky chips deserve a special mention they were lovely. The serving staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. Thank you very much I would definitely eat here again if visiting Hebden

Impeccable service and superb tasting food in a lovely environment. We were served by Adam and Lara and the service was fabulous I work in the service industry and these two were exemplary in the way they served and interacted with us. Every time we come here the service and food are excellent and that’s what keeps us coming back.

Great pub. Excellent food and service

Visited here over the Easter weekend. We were seated in the bar area due to no reservation in the restaurant. The kids meal was generous and tasty. The beef Sunday roast was a bit underwhelming. The beef was cooked nicely but a little fatty. The roast potatoes felt old and the veg comprised of leek, cabbage, green beans and 2 pieces of carrot. I like my veg on the hard side, but the green beans were raw! I couldn't eat them. 2 pieces of carrot between 2 people is poor. Could have done with more veg. A gravy boat would have been better to put your own on. I love a lot of gravy so was happy with the amount on my plate, however the other half doesn't like a lot and he didn't appreciate his dinner swimming in gravy. We didn't bother staying for a pudding as the atmosphere became rowdy and it was no longer an enjoyable experience. I appreciate this was at no fault of the staff and it was a bank Holiday weekend.

The pub itself is lovely and a nice place to spend an afternoon however the food was not great, bland and expensive. The steak sandwich was so dry and lacked any sauce/filling to make up for it. The chicken and chorizo panini lacked flavour.

Great place with excellent food

Been before so decided to take friends yesterday. Everything went fine until our main meal plates were cleared away, and then……well, nothing. They forgot us completely! No offer of desert menus or coffee etc. we waited 30 mins and finally got up, paid the bill and left. Food is great, service on this occasion very poor.

Great bar. Gets very busy. Lots of outside seating with heaters (if needed) Friendly staff. We just had bar snacks but they were tasty and plentiful. Great for people watching. I would recommend.

Stop the secret vaping... shame how you can't smoke a cigarette but somehow the majority get away with puffing on a vape inside a public restaurant.

It is a stunning place. We just walked past and decided to pop in. Great food, wonderful atmosphere and very good service. I will definitely be coming back.

First time visiting here and the place was rammed due to 17oC ☀️ in early March. Huge selection of drinks on leg/cask. I had no time to dine but the menu sounded ultra tasty. The chips were very good though.

Slight delay on being served when we were first seated but service and food after that made up for it. Lovely venue and really nice food.

Visited thur 27th Feb on a day out. Had the veg breakfast. Couldnt eat it all due to generous portion. Meat eaters loved their traditional breakfast. We ate upstairs. Beautiful decor. Excellent service etc. We returned later for cakes n coffee. Sat downstairs. Desert menu good choice Tasted delicious. Dog friendly. Would definately recommend. Great value. Certainly added to our day feel good factor. Thank you

After a hike on the moors above Hebden Bridge I came here for Sunday lunch with 6 friends. You must book in advance at busy times btw. The waiting staff were friendly, and the drinks choice especially draught/cask ales is excellent. I had the 'Minted Lamb Henry' but as a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. The food was delicious, and there was so much of it, I kept discovering more beautifully cooked lamb under the gravy as I went long. My friends all equally enjoed their food choices too. Definitely one to come back to!

Great atmosphere and friendliest staff, was served by Sam and Simone on the bar, they were absolutely lovely. 10/10 experience!

I love this place. Constantly great food every time we visit and we’ve been visiting for years. -The pie is an absolute MUST! -The beer selection is fantastic, loads of local beers. -the wine list is great -staff are really well dressed, take their roles seriously, are smiling and always fantastic. When we visit I always walk way thinking that’s how you do a restaurant.

Came as a family of 4 last Friday. Booked a table upstairs by the window, nice atmosphere, shame stove not lit. The food was niceI had Old Gate fish butty which was lovely. We had the cheese board after. The cheeses were yummy, but the biscuits weren't very nice and not enough for the price. Also I was paying, on getting yhe bill, £15 of extra items I hadn't had were on it, that was quickly rectified, but this happened last time I was in last year. Hope it's not a regular occurance, as not everyone checks their bill.

Great food, as always. We love this place and come often. HOWEVER, staff last night seemed grumpy - like they'd rather be somewhere else. Err.... had they had a bad staff meeting that morning?

We had our post-wedding dinner in the Old Gate and everything was amazing, the food, the atmosphere, the service. I have been there a few more times after that and it has always been great!

Great place with lots of vegan and gluten free options. Great local beer and ale. Highly recommended.

Steak and ale pie was fantastic. Loads of steak and it was a proper pie, not just a stew with a lid. They were also able to do gluten free food for my wife.

We were a group of nine with varied dietary requirements. Food was excellent, as always, and although it was very busy, service was brilliant. Thank you.

Descent boozer, tough to find but the inside is lovely! Proper little pub! I'd say the only downside is quite a few glum looking locals nursing pints on their own... But each to their own!

Really enjoyed it, excellent atmosphere with a spacious seating area which includes upstairs. Found staff and service was top quality, will definitely visit again.

Having been here before, but just for drinks, we’ve always promised to give the food a try, so today we did - Thursday lunch 14 Nov. We arrived to a very relaxed setting, which has a beautiful wood burning stove, we chose a table nearby. The waiter was immediately reactive and brought our menus and took our drinks order. Drinks arrived swiftly. Later we placed our food order with the friendly waitress. We both chose the fish sandwich, on the menu described as a light lunch. We also ordered a side of onion rings to be shared as a starter. Boy o boy, the onion rings arrived piled high freshly made, and deep fried in batter, a little greasy, but they hit the spot. Our fish sandwiches arrived, these were huge and tasty too, served with tartare sauce, chips or fries. Now this is marked on the menu as a light lunch, all I can say is that I wouldn’t like to see their heavy lunch! I’ve knocked a star off because they were having a beer delivery during our meal. 6 or so barrels of beer being squeezed passed our table in a sack truck was a bit off putting to say the least, and the door opening constantly letting in the draught just spoilt it for us.

Lovely place to eat, food, staff etc

Just been today, with my Wife, Sister and Nephew. We had a good time, the food was exceptionally good. My Nephew liked the fish Sea Bass Filet in that case, my Sister had and myself had the Old Gate burger with chips, my Wife had the Guijon Chicken Burger. The Waiter was not pushing ( specifically with the bill ) at all All in all very good

Old Gate ticked all the boxes for our lunch stop on a day out in Hebden Bridge. Great ambience, amazing decor, lovely (well priced) food, excellent choice of well kept real ale and very friendly and welcoming staff. Would definitely recommend and would like to visit again.

Had a stunning sea bass, potatoes, samphire, salsa verde, pine nuts and asparagus for dinner with my wife who had the steak frites and peppercorn sauce. Both excellent, as were the garlic mushroom starters, house white and bread and butter ale.

Great spot, busy Sunday afternoon and we got seated outside straight away, great service and the steak amd ale pie was great, lots of steak amd proper chips. Hubby enjoyed the Sunday lunch too.

We met with friends - neither couple live in the area. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. £22 for two courses. The ambiance was lovely and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. We were all very impressed.

Food was great, went for lunch with the family. Everything cooked to perfection (I'm picky). music was a little loud but that's easily forgiven so long as the food delivers (which it did). Service was a little sluggish but it was busy at the time so not a problem really. 100% worth the money

Their belly pork and chips is difficult to beat! Pity none of the outside heaters worked, had to leave for another establishment eventually to warm up...

What a great evening we had! Thank you again for your great service last night. We went as group of 16 with 2 wheelchair users. We were asked to preorder which was really useful as everyone’s order arrived shortly after we sat down. Drinks orders were kept up today and Tan our server always made sure we was looked after and had everything we needed. We all enjoyed our food and everyone had good feedback on a range of dishes. We sat down stairs due accessibility and we had plenty of room, split over 2 tables. Thank you again and we look forward to coming back soon x

Brilliant food and service. Lovely atmosphere

The steak and ale pie was almost inedible it was so salty. Had it not been for the fact I hadn't eaten all day I wouldn't have eaten any of it. When I pointed this out the lady said someone had been round and asked if everything was OK and we had said yes, which was true, but at that point it had only been a few minutes after the food had been brought and I had only tried the chips. They knocked 10% off the bill which frankly was almost worse than not bothering. We've eaten here many times before and always loved it, but I'm not sure if we'd go back after today, which is such a shame because we have always loved it previously. I'm not a fussy eater and generally like my food salty and don't like to leave bad reviews, but today's was the worst food I've had in a long time.

Still and always the best pub in Hebden. A proper place. Staff brilliant.

Just had the best ever Steak & Ale pie for lunch today at the Old Gate accompanied by excellent chunky chips and some super mushy peas. The pie was substantial, with crispy pastry, steak cooked to perfection and a thick, rich gravy that we had to ask for more of as it was so good. My friends had the Game suet pudding pie which was also excellent. The slight criticism was they only had on one real ale- TT Landlord which was great but too many American IPA’s and Golden and pale ales. Bring back more of the traditional bitters! Otherwise a lovely lunch and excellent service, especially from the very kind, super efficient ‘elderly’ lady behind the bar. Fight Ageism! 😂

Amazing 10/10 central bar/restaurant. Perfectly located with fast easy access to rail and bus routes. Amazing food with reasonable prices too. Great atmosphere. Recommended to book in advance.

03/10/24: Lilley's: Rhubarb cider 4% and a Castle Rock Brewery: Grape Unknown White Grape IPA 6.2% 19/03/24: Works Do. Another fab time. Grabbed some nibbles. 3 for £15. We had chicken goujons, pork belly bites, rosemary foccacia with an additional side of home cooked chips. Craft ale choices were good, but chose a refreshing raspberry cider instead and then the Marble Brewery: Earl Grey IPA 6.8%. Increased stars from 3 to 4. 02/10/23: Team day out! 12/08/22: a short stop on our Hebden Bridge Ale Trail. Not a fantastic choice of craft ales here, so we had a cider instead. Plenty of outdoor seating available. Update: 17/08/22: following a fantastic and encouraging reply to my review from the Manager, I can only promise to return in the future and review my first opinions. Thanks Mac. 👍🏻 Great service!

lovely place in a great location. Staff friendly and welcoming. unfortunately our food wasn't the best. Steak sandwhich was very over done and some parts inedible as so chewy and dry. such a shame. My mums meal was also very salty. other than that great place and nice drinks too :)

This was a busy spot on Saturday early evening. Beers are typically priced. The sun was shining so the outside space was rammed. But don't step beyond the front wall or else you'll get told off 😉

Fantastic pub and restaurant. Great menu and location and the food is amazing. I had the game suet pudding was superb. The bar and waiting staff are very friendly and there is plenty food and beers to choose. I will definitely visit again when back in hebden bridge and recommend to anyone

Called in for lunch today great atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff and the food was excellent. Can thoroughly recommend the swordfish and the game suet pudding from the specials menu. Not to be missed

Booked for a group of 13 today. We had pre ordered food and it was presented to us promptly, after our arrival. The food quality and quantity was superb. Everyone said how much they enjoyed it. The venue is clean, well decorated and has a great atmosphere. The upstairs part of the restaurant is beautifully furnished. The staff were attentive, polite and provided a very efficient service. The menus offer a wide and varied choice of foods from their light lunches, set 2 and 3 course menu or the main. Prices are very competitive and portions generous. I can thoroughly recommend the Old Gate.

Well what a let down food gone down hill since we were last here Bacon over cooked to the point where it’s rubber and raw in some parts ,sausage are no longer nice butchers one and now on the cheaper end being a Smokey sausage and the hash browns are no longer the nice big ones just cheap freezer ones and the butter now come on the toast half melted no longer in a pot and asked for it with out stuff and it still had it such a let down as we used to love this place

Managed last minute changes with no issues and everything was set up for us when we got there. It was a busy Saturday night but everything ran like clockwork. All of the staff were brilliant (and I don’t use that word often) they were attentive, dealt with everyone’s needs with ease. It’s a really professional set up and they should all be commended on their service as we couldn’t fault them. I was slightly nervous about such a large group of people (a mixture of friends and family) but for the first time in AGES I could just sit and relax. They handled everything. The food was lovely, everyone left feeling happy (and full). We didn’t even know about tue upstairs restaurant. If you want exceptional service, a lovely friendly atmosphere and great food the old gate is a sound choice in Hebden bridge. We didn’t catch everyone’s names who were serving that night but Mac and team you did a super job! I’d come back anytime. Thank you Jane
