First time visiting here and the place was rammed due to 17oC ☀️ in early March. Huge selection of drinks on leg/cask. I had no time to dine but the menu sounded ultra tasty. The chips were very good though.

After a hike on the moors above Hebden Bridge I came here for Sunday lunch with 6 friends. You must book in advance at busy times btw. The waiting staff were friendly, and the drinks choice especially draught/cask ales is excellent. I had the 'Minted Lamb Henry' but as a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. The food was delicious, and there was so much of it, I kept discovering more beautifully cooked lamb under the gravy as I went long. My friends all equally enjoed their food choices too. Definitely one to come back to!

Came as a family of 4 last Friday. Booked a table upstairs by the window, nice atmosphere, shame stove not lit. The food was niceI had Old Gate fish butty which was lovely. We had the cheese board after. The cheeses were yummy, but the biscuits weren't very nice and not enough for the price. Also I was paying, on getting yhe bill, £15 of extra items I hadn't had were on it, that was quickly rectified, but this happened last time I was in last year. Hope it's not a regular occurance, as not everyone checks their bill.

Having been here before, but just for drinks, we’ve always promised to give the food a try, so today we did - Thursday lunch 14 Nov. We arrived to a very relaxed setting, which has a beautiful wood burning stove, we chose a table nearby. The waiter was immediately reactive and brought our menus and took our drinks order. Drinks arrived swiftly. Later we placed our food order with the friendly waitress. We both chose the fish sandwich, on the menu described as a light lunch. We also ordered a side of onion rings to be shared as a starter. Boy o boy, the onion rings arrived piled high freshly made, and deep fried in batter, a little greasy, but they hit the spot. Our fish sandwiches arrived, these were huge and tasty too, served with tartare sauce, chips or fries. Now this is marked on the menu as a light lunch, all I can say is that I wouldn’t like to see their heavy lunch! I’ve knocked a star off because they were having a beer delivery during our meal. 6 or so barrels of beer being squeezed passed our table in a sack truck was a bit off putting to say the least, and the door opening constantly letting in the draught just spoilt it for us.

The steak and ale pie was almost inedible it was so salty. Had it not been for the fact I hadn't eaten all day I wouldn't have eaten any of it. When I pointed this out the lady said someone had been round and asked if everything was OK and we had said yes, which was true, but at that point it had only been a few minutes after the food had been brought and I had only tried the chips. They knocked 10% off the bill which frankly was almost worse than not bothering. We've eaten here many times before and always loved it, but I'm not sure if we'd go back after today, which is such a shame because we have always loved it previously. I'm not a fussy eater and generally like my food salty and don't like to leave bad reviews, but today's was the worst food I've had in a long time.

Just had the best ever Steak & Ale pie for lunch today at the Old Gate accompanied by excellent chunky chips and some super mushy peas. The pie was substantial, with crispy pastry, steak cooked to perfection and a thick, rich gravy that we had to ask for more of as it was so good. My friends had the Game suet pudding pie which was also excellent. The slight criticism was they only had on one real ale- TT Landlord which was great but too many American IPA’s and Golden and pale ales. Bring back more of the traditional bitters! Otherwise a lovely lunch and excellent service, especially from the very kind, super efficient ‘elderly’ lady behind the bar. Fight Ageism! 😂

We had a party of 22 booked in for dinner on a Saturday evening. Mac who took our booking was fantastic from start to finish. She was “on it” with everything. Managed last minute changes with no issues and everything was set up for us when we got there. It was a busy Saturday night but everything ran like clockwork. All of the staff were brilliant (and I don’t use that word often) they were attentive, dealt with everyone’s needs with ease. It’s a really professional set up and they should all be commended on their service as we couldn’t fault them. I was slightly nervous about such a large group of people (a mixture of friends and family) but for the first time in AGES I could just sit and relax. They handled everything. Had breakfast there this morning and ordered eggs benedict. It was well presented and poached eggs were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately hollandaise sauce tasted strongly of vinegar which wasn't right and I couldn't eat it. Spoke to staff and they said that hollandaise was cooked as a batch so couldn't be changed. So I asked for the dish to be recooked without the sauce which they were happy to do. This made the meal a little dry with the muffin unbuttered. My dog was happy to help.

This is a really lovely pub in hebden bridge, I came in with low battery and needing to get a train home and asked the lady behind the bar if it was possible to charge it and she plugged my phone in for me. I decided to stay for a drink and food. The prices are a bit steep for a pub but the food was delicious and the service was excellent. I ordered from the specials menu and can't remember the name but it was deep fried calamari, prawns and sea bass with chips. The portion size at first looked small but I struggled to finish even though I wanted to eat everything on the plate. The presentation was really well done. The chips were nice and crispy and everything was perfectly cooked. It came with a side of salsa and alioli. The atmosphere was very relaxed and calm. They have a range of seated areas from comfy Chesterfield's to rustic tables and chairs and the decor is very nice. They also played quite nice chilled music. I would definetly come here for a drink or food again and would definetly recommend to anyone else visiting hebden bridge. It also seems extremely dog friendly.

Follow-up on Google Review Dear Sam Thank you for taking the time to respond to my Google review. I appreciate your effort to address the issues I raised. Unfortunately, I am unable to reply directly to your response on Google. Therefore, I am reaching out to provide further clarification. Because I had high expectations for the steak, I was already very disappointed when I received an overcooked steak. I didn’t need to cut it open to see it was overcooked; it was obvious from the surface, so I immediately raised the issue with the first waitress before even taking a bite. She explained that it was the steak I had ordered. I was confused because I had never seen an overcooked steak being served to a customer before. The second lady also came over to explain the steak situation, but I didn’t clearly hear her say that she could replace it with another dish. I don’t know what she told you afterward, but at the time, I did not receive any arrangement for a replacement dish or a cancellation of the meal. Furthermore, you mentioned that we paid the bill quickly? Sorry, but from the main course being served to us to our leaving, at least 20 minutes had passed, during which I did not touch the food at all. If you really intended to take further action, those 20 minutes should have been more than enough, right? My partner even rested for a while after finishing his meal before we asked for the bill. When paying, I again told your staff that I couldn’t eat the steak because it was too tough. The lady’s attitude was indifferent, and she said nothing, so I didn’t bother to continue. When even your frontline staff have such an attitude, what more can I say? Seeing the bill, I felt it was outrageous to pay £19 for this steak. I only had the starter that day and nothing else, so I ate the chips to not feel completely ripped off. After paying, I went to the toilet, and during that time, you made no effort to address the situation—not even a sorry or anything else. This is the “service” I “enjoyed” at your restaurant. Of course, your staff wouldn’t mention anything that incriminates themselves, so I am just recounting the facts of what I experienced and heard that day. Although you mentioned you wanted to take further action, you didn’t follow through. I remember clearly everyone who served us that day: the first girl who took our order, the second girl who brought us the food (the first person I raised the issue with), the third lady who explained the dish again but did not mention a replacement; otherwise, I would have accepted it immediately, and the fourth lady, whom I was most unhappy with (the one who handled the bill). I mentioned the steak issue to her again, and she showed complete indifference and said nothing. I’m being so harsh because, despite the okay starters, my experience and mood were completely ruined by the steak, which tainted the entire experience. It takes a long time to build a good reputation, but one bad incident can destroy all the previous efforts. I will not be returning to try any more dishes. We drove over an hour to get there, only to have such an experience. It was certainly a unique one. Thank you. Sincerely

Someone recommended this restaurant to me, so we decided to have lunch there. My partner and I both ordered the 2-course set lunch. I chose calamari for the starter and steak frites for the main course. As a steak lover who has had steak frites many times at other restaurants, I figured there wouldn't be any issues since most places can make a decent steak. The 2-course set costs £22, with an additional £2 for the steak frites. My partner ordered pork belly for the starter and chicken for the main course. We both thought the starters were fine. After a while, the main courses arrived. My partner's chicken looked good, but when my steak frites arrived, I was stunned. I couldn't believe what I saw in front of me was supposed to be steak frites. When the staff brought it over, I was speechless because it was clearly overcooked. I thought they must have made a mistake, so I double-checked that I had ordered steak frites. The staff confirmed that this was what I ordered. I pointed out that the steak was completely overcooked and that I had ordered a sirloin. She insisted that this was it and explained that the steak was pan-fried. Alright, I cook steaks often and order them at restaurants regularly, so I know what I ordered. She even showed me the menu again. I was extremely frustrated because what they served me was not steak but more like chewy gum. It was harder to chew than gum, and to protect my teeth, I gave up after the first bite. Soon after, another lady approached and asked if there was an issue with my dish. I explained that the steak was overcooked. She showed me the menu again, stating that this was what I ordered. So? I know what I ordered, but I didn't order chewy gum. Neither the first nor the second lady offered to replace my dish or make me a new one. They both just reiterated that I ordered steak frites. Yes, they were right, but this was the worst steak I have ever had in a restaurant. They explained that they used a thin steak, but even a thin steak shouldn’t be served like this. When I saw the bill, I was shocked that this chewy steak cost £19. OMG, even at Miller & Carter, a set lunch is £19.99, and it's a thick steak that isn't like bubble gum. Honestly, their thin steak was far worse than an £8 steak from M&S. Oh sorry, I should compare it to Aldi's cheapest thin steak. Yes, their steak frites were worse than Aldi’s cheapest steak. Even though I was hungry, I couldn't eat it. I ended up only eating the fries. To be honest, my partner said his chicken was good, but if you dine at this restaurant, absolutely do not order the steak frites. This was the worst steak frites I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Once is enough; there won’t be a second time. Hebden Bridge would have given me a nice experience if I hadn’t had lunch at Old Gate.

So good we came twice. Great food and drink in a beautiful environment at a very reasonable price, served by efficient friendly staff. Only detractor was a couple of children’s desserts were added to our bill in error. This was removed without question but is the reason for 4 stars for service. Met the owners on our first visit who were charming, and deserve great success with this excellent restaurant.

Stumbled across this place with my partner, we were new to the area and hungry. What a find! Food is exceptional and very cheap, service is always on point too. If you're in Halifax and want lunch this is certainly the place to go!

What a lovely place this is for Sunday Lunch. Not been before and stumbles across this lovely pub. Offering a carvery and normal menu. The Broccoli cheese on the carvery was to die for. Moist turkey too. 10/10 would recommend. Hats off to the chefs.
