Visited today with OH. What can I say?! 17th century pub. It is absolutely beautiful. Welcoming, warm, charming, authentic. An absolute hidden gem. The lady who served us was so warm, friendly and just lovely! We didn't have a reservation, but she accommodated us (it was v busy!) and gave us a large table in front of an open, lit fire. Super cosy! OH had a pint of white rat? (he said it was very good), I had a coffee, which tasted nice and was perfectly presented. Food: I had roast pork Sunday lunch. OH had steak pie. Boy were they good! Proper home cooked, delicious food!!! The veg was cooked to perfection and the crackling was THE best I've ever eaten. The young chap who brought the food out was very sweet and polite. We both agreed that we will come back here asap as it has turned out to be our favourite of all the random pubs we've dropped in on. Simply 10 out of 10! Thank you for a wonderful and welcoming meal ; )

What a great place this is. We were staying at Ursula’s place (amazing cottage and host) in Heptonstall and the local pub wasn’t serving food. Ursula recommended we make a short drive out to this pub and I’m so glad we did! It was a gloomy November evening cold and misty, this pub is right up on top of the hill but once inside it was warm, inviting and friendly. We are a family of 5 with young children and they don’t have a child menu but were extremely accommodating and the portions were very generous. We had the lamb shank (grownups) and the children had burgers and ribs. We also had drinks and puddings. Absolutely delicious. The fire was roaring and the staff were friendly. We’d definitely come back if we’re in the area again. Thank you!

Having seen the other reviews I can only think that our faces didn't fit as we were greeted with apathy from the minute we walked in. The food was good (I had the biggest lamb shank I've ever seen) and the chef who served it was pleasant. However, the waitress (possibly also the landlady) was abrupt and rude despite me trying to make conversation. She never asked if our food was ok, and pointedly asked a neighbouring table if they wanted desert, but ignored us. We finally walked out. I hope she was just having a bad day and this is unusual, but it didn't impress my Canadian friend, and spoilt our meal.

A lovely historic coaching Inn, beautiful and remote location with a mixture of walkers, cyclists, locals and our party including two French ladies who wanted a good home cooked Sunday lunch in an authentic English pub. It really delivers, proper home cooked chips, very important to French people. Excellent food, all fresh and home cooked, which delighted the French visitors. A first for them was Yorkshire pudding, English custard with jam Roly poly pudding and Eton Mess. Great value, really friendly welcome, superb food. Portion sizes are great for walkers and cyclists, we came by car and they had to go and lie down after eating the three course menu. Highly recommended.

The Pub is located in lovely scenic moorland. Seemed reasonably busy with a mix of hikers, cyclists and those just out for a run in the car like ourselves. A lovely roaring fire and pleasant welcome. Ordered the steak pie which was super! My partner had the liver, which was succulent and tasty. Accompanied be a good selection of veg of ample quantity. Good selection of drinks and real ales. It’s rare to find a place these days that has kept with the good old traditional country pub style. Keep doing what you are doing. We will definitely return.

It's not been pleasant driving passed this pub with a for sale sign attached to the wall but at last it's open again. The new landlord Terry with his loyal team is breathing new life in to the place. There's a good menu, with a nod to the past & some exciting new additions which will suit most tastes & there's a good selection of cask beers. We were there Sunday 20th March, the sun was shining & the place was buzzing with locals & tourists. Unspoilt pubs like this one are very rare & to lose one would be a tragedy so we shall certainly be returning to support Terry in his new venture. Good luck & we'll see you soon.

The Pack Horse (or 'Ridge') has re-opened after a lengthy period of closure - something that many of us thought would never happen. It's much the same as it was before, with excellent well kept beers and a developing food menu. The landlord Terry, has had many years' experience running other local pubs, and is very popular amongst locals and visitors alike. There is nothing more pleasant than sitting outside the pub in the blazing sun with a pint of Ossett White Rat taking in the spectacular moorland views! Current opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 12 noon (food from 1pm). These hours may well increase with the coming of the Spring/Summer season, so it's well worth ringing to check.

On a moonlit night a friend of mine was having a birthday which brought around a impromptu night out, he asked “where would you like to go” and I said “I know just the place”.After a trip over Cock Hill we safely navigated the turning circle for Heptonstall and found ourselves on the Widdop Road heading towards the Pack Horse Inn. You may ask yourself why? Why make the effort? Why drive past 30 different places you could eat into the middle of nowhere?Well the answer to this was due to a previous visit where after a long walk I had been lucky enough to find this place and as like they do when assessing all fine dining establishments they need to assess the place several times to establish if it is as good the last time.Well I can safely say The Pack Horse Inn passed with flying colours. As we walk from the car park on this cold winter evening we walk towards the glow of the pub hoping to find comfort. As you walk through the door it hits you, Wow, a real pub, not painted green and white, not decorated with fake nonsense, no signs stating “owned by consolidated pubs” no a proper real pub, it’s all there, pictures of horses, the tip to local history with engineering drawings all over the walls and photos of days gone by, All wonderful. The fire is lit and crackling, letting off it’s warm glow, I go to the bar and order a pint of the truly brilliant White Rat (a blonde ale you will struggle to beat anywhere) the staff just as with my previous visit are fantastically friendly. We order our food, Birthday boy plumps for liver and onions after being in shock that such a wonderful thing is on the menu, I opt for the gammon, I ask “ would it be possible if I pay to have two eggs instead of pineapple and could I also have some bread to dip into my egg” the reply as always is “no problem”. When the food arrives it’s fantastic, my friend loves the liver and I managed to polish off the gammon which is that big it could probably feed a family in Hebden Bridge for some time. After the meal the lady behind the bar starts her quiz night, it’s was fantastic, no need to sneak onto google, just an old quiz from the early 2000’s, the delivery of which is done in such a funny Yorkshire way, mispronunciations, funny accents and much laughter are all there, everyone joins in, shouting out the answers, very very Yorkshire.A truly wonderful evening, I would recommend it to anyone, make the effort and make the journey, it really is worth it, it’s what we all crave, reality, comfort, individuality and most important of all friendliness.

It’s almost seven years since we last ate at The Packhorse and the experience was so bad that we’ve only just plucked up the courage to try again (despite living locally) We had heard good things since changes to the ownership/management over the last few years and decided to give it another go. We booked a table for 6 and we was seated off no problem. I would strongly advise booking this place, especially on a weekend as it's extremely popular! We had a late comer to the table so we enjoyed some very nice beer and various drinks. When we ordered food, there was quite a lot of food off the menu, which although disappointing, was to be expected as the place was rammed! So I would advise going earlier on to avoid disappointment, especially if you fancy the Sunday dinner! The food was nice, but 2 minor points are that the rack of lamb wasn't really our idea of a 'rack', my husband only removed 3 bones. The other point is that although it was delicious and the option is available for side salad, I feel I would enjoy the lasagne if it was a fraction smaller and always came with a small side salad, but that's just me. Overall a lovely family meal out. Thank you!

I'd like to comment on the quality of the food, the atmosphere and to go on to rate it's taste, quality and the level of service we received. However, we didn't get that far into what they may or may not have been able to offer because of the rudeness and arrogance show to us by the man behind the bar, who presumably was the owner. I have no idea what that blokes problem was but for someone running a pub, he's got his whole approach very wrong indeed. So all i can say is this, go there for the beautiful scenery, the abundant and interesting history of the area and by all means give the pub a try, maybe being pre warned of the rudeness and general air of irritation being shown by the man running the place might help you overlook it and try the menu, personally, id rather give my hard earned money to someone who appreciates the income and doesn't make me feel like I'm just an inconvenience. We certainly won't bother to go there again if we are ever in area again.

The location however is great and I would stop for a drink but would need to think about the food. Ham and eggs average. Mushrooms and stilton was not good. No Stilton as such just cheaper cheese swimming in grease. The hospitality style is interesting and I can see how on first impressions it may be perceived unfavourably and this is a shame as upon further interactions this was fine just a quirky style. Keep trying and hope you can get investing in the place good luck.

It was a while since I last visited, and I was pleased to hear see that the new landlord has retained the feel of the place and much of the previous menu. There was a good choice of traditional pub fare, and I saw a lot of people having large racks of lamb. I had liver and bacon, which was good value and very tasty.

This popular pub has idyllic views, decent beer and the food is OK. However, the decor is ancient, looks like it hasn't had an update for the last 40 years. The front entrance isn't exactly welcoming, broken panes of glass and often no working light in the porch don't create a good entry. The interior of the pub is dark and there's an over abundance of dark wood. There's an ancient electric heater by the bar which looks prehistoric. The window of the ladies toilet doesn't need to have obscured glass, it's covered by ivy which has been allowed to grow and cover it. Not good.

We called in over the weekend. Plenty of car spaces which was good. The food was delicious, tasty and piping hot. Good selection of ales. Staff were good and the service was quick. Will call again in the future.
