Welcoming and clean environment. Excellent food and service. Maxine and her team go above and beyond. Can recommend for parties, wakes, celebrations etc. Entertainment is organised daily, every week. Well stocked and very reasonably priced bar. You should definitely visit and keep in mind as a venue.

Nice place with some great artists/bands on and the bar staff are always friendly. The main issue this place has is damp and mold. It really does let it down however it is a busy place Worth a visit

Popped In one weekend to get some water for the dogs and stayed to watched the football with a few cokes. It was a lovely place but we felt watched from "the locals"

The function room is a great place, the barstaff are warm and friendly. The choices of beers,lagers and alcohol is very good .

We visited this Bar when passing and glad we did. The atmosphere was really nice, very relaxed and friendly. Allows dogs which is a bonus. There is a great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available. Reasonably priced. We would definitely recommend and we will be returning.

We tried the function room on a bank holiday sunday but 20 minutes after paying and sitting down the chef realised he’d run of food completely and came out to the bar being increasingly rude to the bar man who wasn’t sure what he should do next, after asking, the chef shouted over well they’ll just have to go somewhere else it’s not my problem. So no food and half way through our drinks we weren’t even refunded for we left to find breakfast somewhere else A few months later we decided to try again, we stood in the rain for 10 minutes as we had walked down but despite it saying on fb the staff hadn’t managed to open the door yet, as a members staff arrived she let us in and we sat down not knowing how to order, after a few minutes the chef wonders out the kitchen and looks down his nose asking the bar maid is it a youth club ? I wasn’t sure what this ment until later, as he walked away we noticed the scruffy greasy cap that was thread bare, How that’s even allowed in the kitchen I have no idea. So a few minutes later the chef returned and walks over to say, are you lot gonna order or have you just come for a sit down ? If someone explained how to order when we arrived or there was a mention on the menus rather than standing at the bar staring at your customers maybe we’d know 🙄 The breakfast was ok, although over cooked fried eggs on a breakfast when there’s only 5 people in is pretty poor from a chef and the tea drinkers said the tea bags were cheap. Some other dinners arrived after us who chef was very friendly with so maybe it’s just a local pub for local people 😂 Never mind the rankin arms in Hoddlesden dose a good breakfast and really friendly staff too👌🏻

Function room up stairs was quite small and seating was quite uncomfortable.

Visited with a large group of friends - we arrived in dribs and drabs. Very pleasant staff, food was served in good time. Had eggs benedict. My only comment for room for improvement was that the poached eggs hadn’t been drained properly. Others really enjoyed their full English. A good value breakfast.

A warm comfortable hostelry with 1st class service and a great atmosphere. The food is excellent and well presented and the Sunday breakfast is unsurpassable.... I indulged in a plate consisting of a field of tasty mushrooms, a genuine meat filled sausage, perfectly cooked bacon, a large yoked egg, tomatoes, black pud, hash browns, fried bread and 2 full slices of toast, quite deadly for the arteries but fantastic for the taste buds, complimentary tea and coffee with refills make it more than excellent value at less than £6-00. The best breakfast in the North, highly recommended.

Decent pub, very busy and one of the only pubs I have seen people freely vaping in. Not too pricey and a very nice pint.

When we visited our local pub to watch the Grand National and FA Cup Semi-final over the weekend, we thought we'd try out the function rooms new menu. The menu offers a small selection of snack foods and a decent selection of burgers & pizzas. We both opted for the 'funkin big one' burger which was a double cheeseburger with pepperoni, pulled pork, chilli, bacon and onion rings also served with skinny fries. At just short of £10 for the meal, I deem it a good price. It arrived within 15mins of ordering and it was absolutely delicious. Everything was piping hot, the taste was great and the chips were especially nice. The burger itself was really tasty and something you'd perhaps pay more for at more renowned venues. I would highly recommend trying out the menu and we will be back in no time!

Visited with family for a cooked breakfast. Not much choice - full English or something on toast. The full English was very good, well cooked and tasty and at £5.95 excellent value which included tea or coffee.To improve, jam or marmalade should be offered and ‘proper’ coffee rather than help yourself coffee granules.I would go again!

Wanted a home cooked Sunday lunch as we drove though Darwen.. Glad we stopped, the bar staff are friendly, the open bar space is pleasant, relaxing and comfortable with two TVs and an open fire.... A home cooked menu, great quality and fantastic value for money. Nice beer too.. will be back..

I often go here alone whilst my kids attend their dance class in the room upstairs. Always feel really welcome and comfortable as a woman on my own. Loads of friendly types with dogs. Cosy log fire in winter. Recommended x

This is a fantastic pub with a variety of real ales and a very friendly atmosphere. Maxine the landlady looks after her customers and organises lots of entertainment and days out. This pub is definitely worth a visit and I can guarantee you will be back

Popped into this plce on way home, never been in before but was Shocked !Beautiful pint n cheap but interior was beautiful,as an upholseter i was taken back.loads of seated areas with wing back leather buttons chaired, which i had to sit in, leather chestefields, buttoned n made awaesome with old red look Brilliant must have been expensive.sat in my wingbak with two tvs to watch Football on one F1 on other Beautiful place indeed, Lovely pint and great freindly staff Have few pics will upload soon

Booked a family meal for Mother's Day not been before but heard it was really good and good food so got there to find out we had a small table in a corner of a busy pub which looked like working mans pub which is ok but not for Mother's Day plus the table was to small and we had children with us which they said it was a suitable place for we didn't stay any longer

Have often driven past since it opened so decided to go for Sunday lunch. Surprised at how quiet it was when we entered but perhaps many of the locals had gone in the bus to the Rovers match. I had not heard of the beer on the bar from the Wily Fox brewery but the barmaid let me have a taster before buying, I had the blonde vixen which was very good. I had pate to start and my wife and I both had roast beef. The food looked as though it had been sat under hit lights for a while, the peas looked dried out, the barmaid was on her own and had been showing someone the function room, however once we tucked in the food was very good. The mashed potatoes were very creamy, the peas and carrots cooked well, not soggy or undercooked and the beef very tasty, there was a lot on the plate, my wife transferred some of her beef to my plate and she still left some as she had too much. The bill was very reasonable just over £24 for drinks, 1 starter and 2 main courses, we paid nearly £40 for a similar lunch a few weeks ago at a pub in Blackburn and the quality wasn't as good. Certainly worth a return visit !

I had been for a drink a few times in the week and was nice but decided to go for a family meal on sunday I got a share platter and it was huge and really nice it could of served 4 people never mind 2 and i had ordered a sunday roast after i could, not move, no complaints over the food and nice staff. Just a shame they only serve food on a sunday would be nice to go mid week as well

I may be slightly biased here as this is my local pub, but having lived in Darwen for 24 years this is no doubt the best pub in Darwen. The drink value is almost second to none and there is always a warm friendly atmosphere inside. It feels sometimes as if you're part of a separate family, even if like me you only go down at weekends! They always have great entertainment on, aswell as the football! Highly recommend the interactive quiz on a Thursday night, you even get free nachos or chips during the interval!

Booked Sunday lunch for a family get together.5 off us ,all had Roast dinner.4 lamb and 1 beef.Giant Yorkshire pudding,lovely creamy mashed potato,roast potatoes,carrots and peas.Huge portions all freshly cooked.All 5 of us agreed it was delicious.Really good value,for home cooked food.Good selection of drinks,also reasonable priced.Good atmosphere,proper pub.We will definitely be back.

Booked for lunch Sunday as this eatery was, more or less, on my way home from watching my talented nephew play rugby in Bolton, I had seen good reviews so thought it worth coat of looking at but as there was no website did not really know what to expect. Firstly, we received a warm welcome and the blazing fire did wonders for the ambience. I noted a tremendous selection of beers, mostly from ‘local’ breweries which earned a star straight away. I asked for a menu and wine list and was informed that there was no wine list and it seemed to be a case of whatever wine had been bought that week was what was available. My wife and I always decide what we are to eat before we order drinks so we sat down to read our menus. Mine was ‘Burger-side’ up so my first reaction was a little negative as my wife does not eat burgers but my neck was saved as, on the other side were more ‘conventional’ mains and the one that looked especially inviting on a first visit was the steak, in one of the pub’s own cask ales, pie so that was my wife sorted. I was decidedly taken with the ‘Darwen Tower Burger’ which comprised of 2 burgers, a rasher of bacon, a slice of black pudding and melted cheese with chips, onion rings and salad so that was me taken care of, thus, it was just a matter of what to drink and settled on a Merlot, which, as it transpired, was Italian; given that we always drink French or New World wines this was a step into the unknown but at £9.95 a bottle we weren’t risking too much. It could have been served a little warmer but that it a minor criticism. The meals arrived, my wife pie being in a ceramic dish with a fantastic short crust ‘biscuit’ on top, the mash, roast and veg being arranged at the side of it on the plate (I forgot to mention that the steak and ale pie had only just come out of the oven freshly homemade). My amazing burger came on a wooden platter/chopping board with the wonderful hand-cut, thick chips in a small dish of their own as were the homemade (judging by the batter) onion rings with the salad at the side. The burger was held together with a small skewer but had to be ‘de-constructed’ so that it could be eaten. It was superb which is not a word one would normally associate with burgers but my guess is that the meats were bought from a local butcher and not of the mass produced variety and cooked just right. Fortunately, we had not ordered starters but, unfortunately, we were unable to have puddings due to the generous portion sizes (I didn’t even manage to eat all of my chips!). As it was Sunday there was a roast on offer and a lady at the table next to ours ordered a ‘small’ portion which looked perfectly adequate unless one has a truly ‘hearty’ appetite. We will certainly go again but next time(s) it will be a decision to go there rather than it being a stopping off point and as it is only about a twenty minute drive from home it will not be a problem to treat ourselves to dinner one evening. My wife actually suggested that it might be an idea to have a starter and pudding and give the mains a miss so that we can get to sample those. As others have commented, the menu is limited but that works for me because it makes the decision about what to eat easier but, although limited there is still, in my opinion, ample choice. But for the size of the establishment it could almost be described as a bistro with the randomly chosen tables and chairs with which the establishment is furnished. There is a nice family atmosphere and to categorise it as a ‘Gastro’ pub is probably a label too far. I can do no more than give The Old Function Room a massive recommendation that anyone considering this place should definitely go and if your experience is anything like ours you will not be disappointed and your wallet/purse will not be much slimmer when you leave. Please do not be put off by the fact that I have classified the food as “Cheap eats”: that is purely about the price and certainly not about the quality.

Haven't eaten here yet but been meaning to get down for the Sunday roast. Always a nice pub to visit for a drink. Especially on a cold Sunday evening when the fire is lit and you sit on the sofas in front of it with a drink and good company.

Did a gig there on saturday 16th jan and despite the awful weather (very heavey snow) myself and the locals managed to make it to the old function room. i instantly loved the pub, great freindly welcoming staff who all had a smile on their faces and were more than helpful with me. the locals were also great, again very freindly and welcoming. although i never tried the ales they did look really good and had a good choice. this is definatley the kind of pub you wish you lived around the corner from!! the great log fire was roaring away, great people and great staff! i will be there soon for a few real ales with a freind who lives locally to give my review again. from his reviews i know i wont be dissapointed. the food review ive given is from my freinds experience who said its great.

Visited the function room on a few occasions watching bands and also frequented their German beer festival. Always a warm welcome and good atmosphere in this traditional pub. Good selection of Lagers and cask ales which are always kept well.

Generally visit for Sunday lunch. The roast beef dinner is excellent value for money and the hot beef muffin is equally as good. Limited menu with a specials board, all reasonably priced. Decent portion sizes and great value for money.

Went here last Friday evening for a birthday treat with family and friends. It was most definitely not a treat i want again . We arrived at 6.15pm and had to walk through what can only be called an ashtray at the door. Getting to the bar was an art in its self, we had booked in advance for 14 people. some tables were reserved for us but we had to put them together ourselves there was no menu,s or cutlery on the tables. The food was basic pub grub, and not good grub either, and when we started eating the resident drunk stepped in, he constantly kept coming to the table asking if everything was ok, when asked if he worked in the pub he said he was just helping the waitress. How any establishment could allow this to happen is beyond me, we have never been anywhere like this before. I can only believe that the reviews that have been left on here are not real people .

I went to the function room because i'd heard they had started serving food and i was meeting some friends there. I went to the bar to get a drink and it took me 10 minutes to get served and it wasn't even busy just poor staff and with nobody really in charge. Later i decided to get something to eat so i looked at the menu and it had very limited choice. So i decided to play it safe and order the "Darwen Tower Burger" and i wish i hadn't bothered the burger bun was very dry and the burgers looked like they had just been pull from the freezer. I won't be trying anything else here because i saw more meals come out and they didn't look great. In future i'll be going else where to eat.

We visited as a family party of 14, all meals were cooked to perfection, a good sign is when plates are empty. Excellent value for money and nice to see prices for children's soft drinks are by no means expensive, we will be visiting again.

Visited with family for sunday lunch following a recommendation.I have to agree excellent value £6.95 for a roast. Good portion size and well cooked all the food was hot on arrival to the table.The young waitress was very polite and attended quickly to our requests.There are other food options and these all looked good as well.

First visit on the back of recommendations around the roast Sunday lunch and we certainly were not disappointed.Although the dining area we were allocated was a little cramped the service was prompt and cheerful and the quality of the food was excellent.The majority of our party selected the roast beef dinner which was plentiful and very tasty and a bargain at £6.95 each !A couple managed desert which again were very good and great value at £2.95
