Nice friendly bar, very relaxing with a few different beers on. Staff on the day were very friendly. Worth visiting if in Darwen as not far from the centre.

Great selection of Hopstar beers on cask in tip top condition. It was lunchtime so unable to judge atmosphere and I didn't eat

Chilled atmosphere, nice pint and open mic guests last thursday every month. Worth a visit and sing.

Has an excellent range of freshly brewed ales all on hand pumps. I had Up t'mill which was 3.8% and was smooth and very moreish. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The night we went was open mic night and there was a steady stream of musicians willing to have a go. All really good and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who doesn't want loud beery posers but prefers an alternative vibe

Excellent place for live music, really nice welcoming atmosphere and a brilliant selection of beers.

We accidentally stumbled into this little gem of a place after Brenda needed a sit down following a funny turn on the way to Sainsbury’s. The barman was lovely and offered us a bowlful of the complimentary Pea and Ham Soup while she got her breath back. We will certainly be returning to Bar 39 on our next trip to Darwen as it will save us cooking when we get home.

Was with a group of 10, 3 of us sat separately for a few minutes waiting for others to catch up etc. I myself was skipping a drink as I was nearing my limit. All of a sudden one of the barstaff came over and said "are we just renting out free tables or are you going to buy a drink". We had only been there for ten minutes or so and I found this extremely rude. We were going to buy drinks at our own pace. It was a fair enough statement, but to say that to peoples faces is terrible practice. Absolutely the wrong way of going about it. Not to mention they don't take cards.

A Saturday afternoon visit to Darwen and Number 39 is always first stop. Excellent choice of their ales and a couple of guests. It's a refreshing change to be welcomed with an 'hello' and smile and served by someone knowledgable. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the service in other bars I visited. I'll stay in Number 39 next time!

Excellent range of cask beer at a reasonable price. Very friendly staff and locals

I quite like Number 39's as it serves some pretty nice Belguim beer but its one of those bars I've always thought could be so much better but its not quite there. Anyway its a pretty nice chilled cafe esque bar with some pretty good live acts on at times.

New owners will be taking over in January 2020 after ten brilliant years of Number 39. The end of an era for the best small music venue anywhere!! Had to laugh at the reviewer who moaned because he entered a music venue and people had to tell him to "shush" - I think that says more about the reviewer than the venue! The owners have ran a great bar and Darwen Music Projects have achieved wonders turning a bar into a fabulous venue! International acts on regular basis including Martin Carthy MBE, Matumbi, Nik Turner's Space Ritual, Merry Hell, Andy Kershaw, Kyla & Victor Brox, Henge.... the list goes on and on.

Great bar if you want something a bit different. A huge range of drinks as this is a micro brewery pub and stacks lots of real ales and handcrafted ciders. The live music at this place is really hard to beat, just check out their FB page for details of upcoming events.

Bobbed in on a Sunday afternoon whilst a music duo were setting up. Good beers at reasonable prices, owners had put a cheese board out for customers to help themselves. Good music and atmosphere.

As a musician I love performing here, it's exactly what musicians want... A crowd who have been helped to understand that music is to be enjoyed, not ignored and talked over all night... A buzzing vibe too

Really good beer but one bar server person i.e bar maid is probably the worst I have ever come across, must be a relation to the owner, you would never employ this person if it was your own business

Great pub, great prices,great beer and frequent live music, what's not to like?

With red lights at night and bambo and pine this pub feels like some bar on a holiday. You can make your own mind up about it. Toilets aren't up to scratch and the land lady is hard faced and angry.
