This is a great pub in a lovely location and the staff are always very friendly. We only visit a couple of times a year as it's nearly 40 miles from where we live so we have a 'run out' through the Aylesbury Vale for lunch. We've never had a bad meal. I had the steak today and it was cooked perfectly.

Fantastic visit - one of the best roasts all of us have ever had in a pub. If not the best. Certainly the roast potatoes were the best! It was a really great experience from start to finish - service was amazing and everyone so friendly. Will absolutely be back - every weekend if I could!

Great service, great food, thank you to Kelly and the team, I will come back as often as I can. *Since my last review I have certainly returned many times with family, friends, and a pint by myself. We are always made to feel very welcome - always nice to walk into a pub and be greeted with a smile and a chat and to be made to feel like an old friend. We are really looking forward to spending the winter evenings in this cosy pub.

Nice area, friendly staff - unfortunately, I did not think too highly of the food. Ordered the steak and requested medium rare. The steak was cooked quite well and was visually pleasing, but just lacked flavour, in my opinion. It didn't taste seasoned at all - if you like pure steak flavour with no salt, butter or herbs then you will probably like it.

Starting with the positives, great staff and good location, and the prices were sensible. Staff were efficient and really friendly, nothing was too much trouble. My wife had an excellent dry Marlborough Sauvignon. Unfortunately, the food was really poor. We had the salt and pepper squid which had none of the salt and pepper taste. It was more like calamari but with the taste of stale oil. It dripped dark brown, sticky old oil onto the white plate making it very inspiring. For main, we shared a Cesar salad, which was again very poor. The chicken was dry, the dressing was a general vinaigrette, no hint of anchovies, the croutons were soft and dripping on stale oil. We sat outside which was pleasant, and fortunate as the offside decor and ambience was more like a retirement home than a pub. Next time, it will be back to The Pointer in Brill, or the Churchill Arms in Long Crendon. Not one to repeat...

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Dreadful. We waited an hour for starters and childrens meals. When they eventually came one of the childrens pastas wasn't cooked and not edible. We were told it took so long because we wanted the childrens meals at the same time as the starters. The kids meals were pasta, which was microwaved, fish fingers and a macaroni cheese. The ladies toilets are dirty, dead flies around the sink and obviously hasn't been cleaned in awhile from the state of the plug hole. The toilet bowls were stained and dirty. It wasn't busy enough for the toilets to be in the state they were in, so they aren't cleaned. The disabled toilet doesn't have a toilet seat, the raised one is left on the floor. It took 2 hours for our mains to arrive. The childrens plates were still out when their dessert came out, when I asked for them to be cleared so there was space for the pudding they said all the staff are in the kitchen. I said I would take the plates to the bar then, only then they took them. When the mains came we realised one in our party didn't get given their food, another meal of gnocci was like eating rubber and couldn't be eaten. More apologies for that. We won't be returning. The manager told us we would get money off but when the bill came it was at full cost. We had to go up and then ask for money off. It was virtually empty for a Saturday lunch time which was very telling. All we got given were excuses and told we should have been asked to pre order our food on booking. We were never asked to pre order and when we arrived they didn't mention it, only said that when we had been waiting far too long for food. They also couldn't take payment at the table which in this day and age is ridiculous. We were told to pay at the bar, when we said we wanted to pay separately the lady said she didn't know how to do that. Obviously not our fault but theirs. Avoid. We won't be coming back again that's for sure. As an added problem there are also screws coming up and out from the playground equipment.

Visited recently for a Sunday roast. Sadly was left disappointed after previously having good food here. Roast potatoes were clearly not home made but from a frozen packet, veg was not cooked well nor a large selection (parsnips boiled rather than roasted). Served with plenty of gravy which was good. Meat was ok, nothing special, rather disappointing that better could be cooked at home sadly. In other establishments have been overwhelmed with the amount of food provided with a roast, myself and other members of my party were left with room. Didn't stay for dessert due to the quality of the main. Service was slow despite an empty pub.

We rarely get to eat out so thought we'd treat ourselves after a lovely dog walk. Haven't been here in years and thought how shabby the whole place looked which is a shame given it's location. The disabled toilet was really filthy and the member of staff I reported it to didn't seem to care. To be fair the food was served quickly, however it wasn't busy for a gorgeous Friday Evening. They didn't have any garlic ciabatta in the kitchen which we had ordered. The garlic mushrooms were the worst we've ever had, really watery. The sweet chilli sauce was spare and watered down. The risotto was absolutely horrible. A thick green puree with a few grains of really hard rice. The butternut squash and beetroot just did not go well with it. A truly horrendous dish. Not worth the money as it was an extremely small portion. In all fairness the halloumi was cooked really well. All in all a very disappointing meal. When you can't afford to eat out very often it makes it even worse. We would not recommend. As the garden and benches are so shabby, not even a nice place to sit out.

This was a charming countryside pub with a lovey garden that has a small river running through it. We’ve been there many times in the past. Last night’s visit showed how thing can go downhill very quickly. The garden is neglected and overgrown, the outside bins needed emptying and the chairs and tables need some urgent tlc. There were 5-6 staff hanging out by the main entrance, smoking and looking pretty fed up. Cigarette butts all over the floor. The staff who served us were surly and seemed they would rather be anywhere else. There were three handpulls for real ale on the bar, they all served the same beer. The food was ok, we ate as quickly as possible and got out of there fast. Greene King need to send a Gordon Ramsay type troubleshooter to this once lovely village pub to help steer it back to it’s former self.

Earlier today we came for lunch as a birthday treat for my father. One of our party was running late. The time between ordering and the plates coming out one at a time, was very long. They forgot the side dishes, which took another 15 minutes to come out. By which time my father had finished his food and my aunt was still waiting for her chips, which had been forgotten, so she hadn’t even started her meal. The food in the case of the salmon was cold with a hard egg, the steak was tough. Then we had 4 coffees and one mini pudding that was over microwaved. When we asked for the bill, we were told that because my my aunt had put £100 behind the bar, the only money owed was the last drinks and coffees, but couldn’t provide an itemised bill for the £100 when asked. We used to come quite often but don’t think they’ll see us again.

Having looked at all the positive reviews, I was very disappointed when I arrived at the pub at lunchtime to meet a friend. The pub is in an idyllic spot but the interior did not live up to this. The decor and furniture in the conservatory where we were seated looking very tired, the music intrusive and the menus grubby. This did not bode well for the food. We each ordered a steak ciabatta and, despite the menu promising that the meat would be pink, it was very well cooked and covered with mustard, which I do not like. If I had known this (from the menu), I would have ordered something else. There was hardly anyone else in the pub which, for a Friday lunchtime, says a lot. Despite all this the barman was friendly and brought the drinks on time. However, the overall experience was not good and I'm afraid neither my friend nor I will be back.

Food was incredibly bad. Don't want to think about it. Lukewarm, no taste, undercooked frozen peas, cold chips replaced but still tasteless, pasta so soggy it left deposits on the fork, completely dried-out piece of lemon etc. Can't believe any of the positive reviews. Sorry.

We haven't been there for a while but have been recommended to try a couple of people who have visited recently. Met up with some friends visiting the country for lunch but not able to order or even have a drink as their till and card systems were down. Offered to pay cash but this was not an option. Shame the staff were very welcoming and appologetic.

Booked a table but it was in the corner of the bar and very crowded with people drinking. Food was good but they did tell me the quiche was gluten free (which it wasn't when I asked about the pastry)

The quality of food was rather disappointing. Rump steaks were have ordered were literally burned to coal. Portions were also surprisingly small as for adults. Not to mention the length of awaiting for food. Generally nice place but some improvements would be very welcomed.

Our family went for burger and a pint night at the queens head. On arrival we were greeted by the lovely Debbie and straight away I felt welcome thanks to her bubbly personality. The kids were shown the games and actually got on. Guinness was poured properly and left to settle making the perfect pint. The food was lovely with many options of smashed burgers and pizzas. We were told on arrival about a 45min wait for burgers, they were with us in half an hour and cooked to perfection We will deffo be going back. YNWA. Thankyou to all at the queens head ❤️
