We waited for 45 minutes for 3 plates of food. In that time, one table was served (smashed avocado on toast) and every other table was waiting for food. Some people left. When the food arrived it was ok but nothing great, and definitely overpriced. The cafe and shop have a great vibe but are let down by slow service and uninspiring food. Shame.

This place used to be excellent for lunch, sadly no more. The menu is nowhere near as good as it was. It was always colourful, well presented and delicious. A few days ago I chose tacos, which arrived poorly thrown together and stone cold. I could have done a far better job myself. Such a shame. This is the second time I’ve eaten here in the last month and both times were the same. Needs urgent improvement.

An interesting shop, with some much variety on offer from candles to metal letter stencils and a cafe to boot. Noticeably quieter than the coffee shop over the road but we noted it didn't do soft drinks so passed on the drink option. It deserves a browse if nothing else.

The place has an interesting vibe but it is all facade. The menu for lunch was extremely limited and I was served a small bowl of lukewarm curry. It was flavoursome but lacked texture and for £14 was ridiculously expensive compared to much better vegetarian restaurants in Bath and Chester I have visited recently. A 330ml bottle of local craft ale was £6. Strangely I was asked for a gratuity before the meal was served.....I can see why! Vegetarian food doesn't need to be like this

A trip to the Old Electric Shop was planned into our day book hunting at Hay on Wye. Unfortunately it wasn't as hoped. The shop itself is mildly interesting but trying too hard to be edgy, in the same way those achingly unpleasant little shops of horror found in and around Hoxton/ Clerkenwell or Spitalfields in the 1990's used to. The menu doesn't offer much but we decided to kick off with a hot chocolate, at £3.50 a cup I hoped for something hot, it wasn't. Next up breakfast and to avoid further disappointment we ordered one to share (Buckwheat pancakes with berries and Maple Syrup), again not very warm, the pancakes were stodgy, tasteless and smelled like TCP, the lack of fruit made the whole thing a bit of a con at £7.No Maple syrup was detected. Had either of the two orders been reasonable, warm or tasty we would have stayed for lunch, instead we headed to the excellent Oscars for fish and chips in a warm environment with less 'cool' staff. 3/10

Purchased a shirt for my son in December as a Christmas present and I asked specifically if I could return it in case it didn’t fit . We went back to Hay ( an hour round trip from home) to return the shirt that my son couldn’t wear as it was too small . The shop assistant at the Old Electric Shop said she asked the manager who eventually came and told me that I was not entitled to any refund or credit note from the shop as they were not responsible for the shirt that was sold in their shop by an independent retailer . She also that the item was 2nd hand and not suitable for return . In my mind items sold in a shop are this shop responsibility to deal with if found unsuitable to the buyer . The manager of The Old Electric Shop was unpleasant and unhelpful. We definitely won’t be returning .

The first thing I must say about our experience here is how friendly and accomodating the staff were. Despite being jam packed they managed to find a wonderful little table for us.For food I ordered the Sri Lankan Curry. Both my girlfriend and I have spent significant time in Sri Lanka and we were both amazed with how perfectly they recreated the wonderful and unique tastes we remember so fondly from out time their. I haven't tasted such authentic Sri Lankan Food since being in the country itself. My girlfriend ordered the Shakshouka and described it as absolutely delicious and perfectly spiced. The biggest compliment I could give this dish (having tried it myself) was overhearing the couple on the table next to us explain to one of the waitresses that she is from Israel, the home of Shakshouka, and that it was, in her words: 'perfect'.In conclusion, were going back again tomorrow.

We stopped in to the Old Electric Shop for a browse and a quick cup of takeaway coffee. After a dismissive response when we checked that we were queuing in the right place, given the currently Covid circumstances, we ordered our coffees and were told to wait for them outside. Nearly 15 minutes later, after waiting where we were told, we decided to go back in to ask after our coffees. It turned out that our coffees were sitting on a table inside, and the member of staff was rude to us, suggesting that it was our fault that we’d missed them. Given that there are 3 tables outside, and we were sat at one of them, right next to the front door, it’s hard to imagine how we would have missed her “giving us a shout” or anyone trying to find us as suggested. More importantly, her attitude was rude and unhelpful. All in all, a frustrating experience and we won’t be returning.

Came to eat here as recommended on trip advisor and by one of the shop owners in town. Menu looked great- we are both vegetarians and loved the creativity and fact it said meals could be altered to suit individual needs. However, the atmosphere made me dither about staying - there was no welcome and the whole place just didn’t seem welcoming- wish I’d listened to my instinct . It was freezing outside ( coldest day of winter so far) and our drinks arrived luke warm - that was after the girl on the till struggled to even know what I was asking her for - seems that oat milk - even when on the menu is difficult to grasp and to add insult to unjury the woman helping her repeated what I’d asked for but in a southern accent rather than my Durham accent which- whilst she was kind enough to add in the other types of milk too - so as imply the girls problem not mine- there was also no apology from her or the girl. Cappuccino presented in a school water glass- really? Which adults want to drink a cappuccino that way ? Meals arrived and looked amazing however mine was missing two vital elements - sourdough bread (which is the only bread I can tolerate and one of the reasons I’d ordered that meal) had been replaced by a ciabatta and the poached egg. When I brought this up with the girl serving she just shock her head and said “oh really!” No offer to change anything or apology. Plates the meals arrived on were cold and as a consequence our food was again luke warm. Between my cool, drink, cool meal and the ice cool atmosphere I just wanted to get up and walk out. The staff were the least friendly staff we’ve ever come across - no interaction not even a hello or a goodbye . No one even came from the kitchen to apologise about my meal either. There seem to be better places to visit in Hay , trust your instinct and have a look around at those before trusting the other reviews on here.

Great little Hat shop in there. It’s well worth calling in, it as something for all. We will on our next visit to Hay. Mike

Stumbled upon this quirky and interesting shop/cafe. Had cappuccinos which were quite bitter (mainly because the powder on the top was straight cocoa rather than chocolate), but were otherwise nice, and the almond and orange cake was delicious!!

Delicious scrummy veggie food. Quirky ambiance. Down side is there aren’t enough tables, seems to market itself more as a thrift shop!! Great for a quick lunch.

I was visiting the area from Suffolk. It was the only vegetarian/vegan place I could find. I had the Laksa, it looked good but changed once I tasted it. It had far to much vinegar so was really sharp. Having tried many veggie places I still cannot find anywhere better than my favourite veggie pub back home The veggie red lion in greenstrert green near needham market. I will keep looking but it’s not a place I would rush back to.

We went to The Old Electric Shop for lunch when we were passing through Hay-on-Wye, because I had read that it had vegan options, and I was so glad we did! The open sandwiches were works of art! Mine was beetroot 3 ways (pureed, salt baked and pickled), garnished with red chicory, dill and horseradish sauce, which tasted as good as it looked. My partner's included asparagus and a poached egg. The cakes weren't quite up to the same standard, but were still good. The open sandwiches were fantastic value. It's a shop as well as a cafe and sells vintage clothes and housewares, artisan jewellery and a few books, Will certainly go back next time we're in the area (and might have to make a special trip!).

I visited the Old Electric Shop today and had the best open sandwich I have ever had! It was remarkable - halloumi, dates, hummous, chickpeas - gorgeous! And a very lovely smoothie.

This shop/cafe/restaurant turns into a lively bar with great music in the evening ( at least during the festival). Good selection of gins (Brecon gin and tonic £5). The country/folk group we heard (The Fordsons) were excellent.

We stumbled upon The Old Electric shop as we we’re mooching round Hay-on-Wye and absolutely loved how quirky and individual it was. A shop, cafe during the day and bar during the night. They have some fantastic stuff to buy and we brought some fab books, the cakes are to die for, they were fresh, homemade and tasted delicious & the cocktails were fab. This place is a must and we will definitely be returning upon our next visit to Hay-on-Wye.

Stopped in here to get out of the rain whilst at the How the Light Gets In festival. To sum it up... Hot drinks, tasty treats, good food, dry seats.

endroit assez improbable, qui dégage une véritable atmosphère:vous entrez, visitez, flanez puis vous vous posez et dégustez une pâtisserie et une boisson chaude le regard attiré par le spectacle des objets exposés tout autour de vous

The Old Electric Shop is a firm fave of mine, and I feel very lucky to have it on my doorstep. The food is so incredibly delicious and healthy and my regular lunch-time treat is the Italian ciabatta.. The staff are always smiley and friendly, and there is so much to look at while you wait for your food - all in all an amazing place to go!

Great to meet friends for lunch or coffee. Food is freshly prepared, uses local and seasonal ingredients, veggie and GF options, etc. Don't go expecting luxury - just a relaxed atmosphere among interesting people. Loads of interesting stock in the shop, but no pressure to buy - just time to think about your eclectic purchases!

Lovely coffee, great eclectic surroundings. Has some wonderful, quirky items in the shop part, we spent ages in here looking at things and my sister bought a very cool rug. Great location for a coffee break from all those books!:o)

My favourite place to visit when I have friends or family come and stay. This time did not disappoint! Super friendly staff, great food and ALWAYS something new to feast your eyes on. Incredible furniture and vintage clothes. If you get a chance to go when there is a cocktail night - do it! Ive made cocktails in previous jobs - but not as good as these!

Phoned to check the cafe was open and to book a table. The person said they expected to be very busy (Good Friday) we couldn’t book, they had very few tables and we would have to ‘take our chance’. He had a queue of people and couldn’t help me further.

Was looking forward to visiting this cafe for a while & was hugely disappointed by their superior attitude. The shop was lovely with quality items, but was ignored at the cafe as I stood for 3 or 4 minutes while they talked amongst themselves. Didn't like the snobbish attitude.

This is a very interesting place. There is a mixture of home decor and lighting, art, books, clothing (including vintage), hand made items, and plants with a little cafe and seating area too. We had a hot drink after looking round and were glad we had found it. We weren't quite sure what it was before we decided to have a look so just go for it!

Whilst I usually promote Deli-Licious as a good place to go if you have a Gluten Free (GF) diet, I was recently disappointed by their GF afternoon tea. I was pleased to hear they offered a GF afternoon tea but was left feeling let down by the poor selection and presentation. The normal afternoon tea was presented on either a picnic bench or a three tiered serving stand, mine was just put on a plate with no effort to make it look like everyone else’s in the group, making me feel like an outcast. At a cost of £16.95, it certainly wasn’t value for money.
