The old Crown is a fabulous, cosy traditional pub which we visited many an evening for dinner and a drink while on holiday in Hesket Newmarket. This is truly a special place and Helen, Simon and Tas the dog were so friendly and welcoming, as were all the staff and local community. The food and service was excellent, and in particular the steak and ale pie was the best we have ever had! A huge hit! This is obviously a much loved pub and rightly deserves its great reputation. It was so lovely meeting everyone there and we couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome! It was a treat to meet all the dogs too! We will definitely be back when next on holiday in the area. Highly recommended!

My husband and I had our wedding breakfast at The Old Crown on Saturday and it was absolutely perfect. We couldn't thank Helen, Si and all the staff more for making it so very special for the both of us. Nothing was to big, or small, of an ask. The food was brilliant, being able to set up the room the day before was incredibly helpful, they were so adaptable to our needs and the beer (as always) was brilliant. Thank you so much. We couldn't recommend The Old Crown more, if you want to pop in for a pint, have a meal or have your wedding breakfast there, they do it all! I've been coming to The Old Crown with my Mum and Dad since I was small, and I couldn't imagine a better place to have had our wedding breakfast. It was incredibly special to be able to have it here and it means the absolutely world to us.

Knowing The Old Crown, we knew that it would be the perfect venue for an intimate wedding celebration for our daughter. Our desire to 'set up' the room for ourselves the night before was no problem. The actual wedding day was all that our daughter had wished for: excellent food and beer; great atmosphere ( with the locals applauding the couple as they entered the pub) and friendly considerate staff. Three of the visiting guests liked the pub so much, that they each bought a picture of the village (showing the pub) from the little art display in the snug! Many others saying they will definitely be back again. Thanks to Helen & Si

Absolutely fantastic country pub. We came to the are for a family holiday and wanted a nice family friendly pub for Sunday lunch for 7 adults, 4 children and a baby. We hit the jackpot here. Service, food and drinks all amazing. We were so well looked after by all the friendly staff. The food was amazing - most of us had roast dinners or steak pie. Also amazing desserts including some a great dairy free / vegan chocolate orange cake which was a lovely treat for our DF members. If we lived closer we would be back in a heartbeat.

We called here yesterday without a booking but they managed to fit us in even though they were busy. What an amazing atmosphere! My husband and I played dominoes and other games that were available and chatted with other locals until our table was ready. Such a friendly pub with amazing food. I had the nut roast and hubby had the steak and Hesket pie. Manageress so friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend.

I’ve been coming to this pub for over 30 yrs and I’ve seen all the changes in that time. It’s still one of my favourite pubs in the UK. The beer is outstanding, good pub food. But I haven’t eaten here for a while. I mainly come for the beer and a chat with the locals. It’s a great great pub.

Great beer, excellent food, lovely staff, cosy surroundings. We went for dinner & we were not disappointed. The Steak & Ale pie was superb. Home made portions, definitely not bought in from an outside caterer. One of us enjoyed spinach & ricotta cannelloni which was delicious. Portions were generous & served with freshly cooked veg or salad. Possibly the best meal out we’ve had in a long time. The pub is community owned but standards are exceptionally high. The staff are friendly & efficient and clearly working very hard. Prices are fair and standardised so all meals priced at either £15:50 or £18:50 Fabulous pub & I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Stayed just nearby last weekend (Fri 17-20 Feb) and visited this pub on all 3 days! We loved it and were so quickly made to feel like we were regulars. All the staff were so friendly and the landlady, Karen particularly so. My partner thoroughly enjoyed their own beers - he was so impressed with them and I sampled a fair few of their red wines ;-) We ate in here on the Friday night too. Food was fantastic. Great portion sizes all delivered hot and fresh. I particularly welcomed the variety and quantity of veg provided too. I'd highly recommend this pub & restaurant and we really do hope to stay in the area again, partly as it's a lovely village but very much so for this pub.

There is nothing not to like about this wonderful, community-owned Lakeland pub! We visited several times in a week and each visit, whether for drinks or food and drinks, was an absolute pleasure! Tazzer, the pub Collie, is also a complete legend! The welcome for everyone is warm. The ale from the adjacent microbrewery excellent, and the food superb. The lamb shoulder was fall-from-the-bone tender and exceptionally tasty. The Steak and Heskett Ale pie was packed full of meat with 'proper' puff pastry. Accompanying veg and chips were cooked to a very high standard. All-in-all, a superb place!

A wonderful comforting menu of familiar favourites done extremely well. A proper pie with short crust pastry all round and delicious filling was served. This was not a boring stew with a lid. I love hot childhood puddings and am often disappointed by those on offer in pubs and restaurants; crumbles are often a tedious sprinkling of granola over some stewed fruit. However, The Old Crown managed to leap easily over my rather high standards for such things. Hoping to find an excuse to return soon.

Myself and my husband visited on a Sunday (Bank Holiday weekend). We stopped by as it was close to where we were staying and although we hadn't booked, they we able to accommodate us for food and drinks. My husband loved the selection of local ales and I was very impressed with the selection of drinks they had on offer (and I'm used to city bars). There was a neat but still varied range of wines, gins and ciders. I can see a previous comment added was 'expecting more' from the drinks selection, but this is a cooperatively-run local pub in a small village and one can hardly expect a full international wine cellar or array of tequilas.I was also pleased that there was another option other than the full Sunday Roast- my husband ordered that and really enjoyed it but I fancied something lighter, and my roast sandwich was lovely. The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a village pub- cozy, friendly and plenty of history. The staff were very welcoming and worked hard to keep everyone happy on a busy day.Really pleased we made it here for a visit.

We were up in Cumbria on a West Highland Terrier reunion. One of the members lives close by to The Old Crown, and as it was doggie friendly booked a Saturday evening for dinner. As it was a Saturday night, and we had all walked six miles on the beach, we were looking forward to a great evening of fayre.Firstly I was surprised that they didn’t do starters, and when I saw that there wasn’t a steak in sight on the menu I was quite shocked. The wine selection was also not great, with only one rose wine on offer, which happened to be the sweetest commercial wine on the planet, Zinfandal.I had the lamb shoulder, which was ok, however a little dry, with not enough sauce to go with it. My wife had the lasagne, which she liked. As they also seem to only offer chips as a potato option, it would have been nice if these had been homemade and not frozen. The Inn itself also looked tired.A side room was very shabby with junk piled up in it, and also I felt the toilets could’ve been given more attention. All in all an average evening.

This is my all-time favourite pub. After a long day on the fells, you walk into the cosy bar, are made to feel incredibly welcome by the friendly staff, and get served some top quality beer brewed behind the pub. We had a meal on a Friday evening earlier this month (November). The menu choice was limited but the food (steak and ale pie with fresh vegetables followed by chocolate fudge cake) was absolutely delicious, and was served quickly. We joined a pub quiz 2 nights later and the whole pub was packed out - from teenagers to octagenarians. This place really is a hub for the community. We stayed in the B&B; a couple of doors down (Denton House). After a long wet day's cycling and having showered and put on dry clothes we popped in here, ravenous, only to be met with the news that as it was midweek and quiet they were having some work done on the kitchen and couldn't provide a meal. The landlady said the pub in the next village (Caldbeck, about 1.5 miles away) was our best option, but as it was still raining and we'd just got dry, the prospect of saddling up again did not appeal! But having seen our chins hit the floor, the landlady very kindly offered to drive us to Caldbeck and collect us again after our meal. We delightedly took her up on her offer and on our return to the Old Crown, a very enjoyable drink in a lovely local.

My partner and I along with our 3 children entered the pub to a mildly busy bar area and empty dining area. After sitting I went to the bar to get a menu to be told if I haven't booked 'we can't do it'. It was just after 530pm and nowhere does it state dining has to be pre booked. Such a shame that a small pub like this decides to turn away 5 guests. We did however have a fantastic meal and service at the oddfellow! Which is highly recommended

There’s a little dining area off from the bar area where we ate and we found the food to be good pub grub. It was a very busy and lively place and it’s easy to see why. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you.

My family dines and drinks here every year and we just love it. The food is good, service is good, and beer is great! The managers are just lovely and it has such a homey feel. Also great access to nice walks/hikes nearby. I highly recommend settling in for a meal and pint.

Lovely local lake district pub. Very small and traditional rooms inside, beer brewed in the microbrewery out the back! Beer is amazing, could spend all day drinking it.

A very special place - warm welcome from the landlords, 6 excellent beers from the on-site Hesket Newmarket microbrewery, lovely unpretentious food with cosy small rooms with log burning stoves. On Monday evenings, local musicians gather in the tiny main bar and play together. This pub is owned by the local community and it shows.

A welcoming place, with a cosy atmosphere and a range of local beer and home made food. A unique pub owned by shareholders who cared enough to rescue it for the community . Sometimes there are jam sessions with local musicians. In a back room there is a pool table and darts. It is possible to eat In a separate dining room or in the bar.

We went some distance out of the way for this experience. A chance meeting in South Georgia (South Atlantic islands) with one of the village pub's many "owners" brought us here. Hesket Newmarket is a remote village on the less travelled northern side of the Lakes. The pub sits on the small but attractive village green - as do many of the customers. Inside, the bar quickly fills up with locals (and their dogs). The pub has rightly won a reputation for their evening meals and all comers get a friendly welcome. Full meals are served in the inner dining room. Standard menu, with a Lakes emphasis but I had an excellent chicken curry.

I contacted the owner a few weeks prior to travelling to the the lakes - as we had booked a local cottage to celebrate my cousin's hen party. I can not praise the owner enough ! She even organised our transport to and from the cottage.

This is a deceiving pub. From the outside it looks so small but the inside opens up. We were greeted on arrival, the landlady came to speak to us & had even arranged Balloons for the Hen. Each of the party had a different meal. I had the lamb shoulder in honey & garlic. It was amazing. I paid £15.95 and I couldn't finish my lamb there was so much of it!! The atmosphere was jovial, and the resident pooch was lovely too. Would highly recommend to anyone who is travelling in that area to go.

6 of us thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal here. Nice menu, reasonable prices. They didn't have any home made puddings which was a shame, but they tasted wonderful anyway so don't let that put you off. Recommend you book, they had to turn people away on the evening we were there as they were full - and this was a Tuesday.

recently stayed in rose cottage just set back from the the pub,and went into the pub to book for the following night,,,as soon as i entered the pub,the locals were very welcoming and friendly,,even from the chap who took the criticism about his pint of 1664''.the actual visit for the meal was great, again the staff very welcoming.and the service was swift and smooth..the food is as you would expect from a country pub,,,hot,, filling and tasty..will never be Michelin star,, but you do not want that.....the only down side was that in the back dinning area it needs some serious fly control,as we were bothered during our meal,,so a electric fly killer would not go a miss...but apart from this well worth a visit,,and well done to the village for owning and running your own pub,,will always return with my family,as it was so friendly....

We visit Keswick every year and always use the sandwich shop at least twice when we are there. The food is always great with plenty of fillings and wide variety of sandwich’s. The service is always great and the prices are really competitive. Overall highly recommended.

Main courses were delicious, the only big let down were the deserts, Nutella sundae with whipped cream, it isn't a sundae without ice-cream and sticky toffee pudding with whipped cream, when stated on menu vanilla ice-cream , with no discount because of alternative, should of came out to say they had run out of ice-cream
