The Old Cottage in Cardiff

Good Sunday roast at the Old cottage, Lisvane. We had pre-booked and pre ordered our meals as we were a larger group. The food was really tasty and nothing was too much trouble for our server Maddie. Thank you, everyone had a good time.

**After posting this review the staff reached out, apologised for the confusion and extended the voucher which we were then able to use. Great customer service and very much appreciated 😊** I visited today for a birthday celebration. The food was great as always, and the atmosphere was lovely. However, there was a slight mix-up with the bill. I had received a birthday voucher for a complimentary meal. Both the festive and Sunday menus were available, so we asked beforehand which menus we could order from, as I only wanted 2 courses and the festive menu is a set 3 courses. The waitress checked with someone and confirmed that I could have 2 courses and use the voucher if I ordered from the Sunday menu, but nothing was mentioned about my partner having to do the same. Consequently, my partner ordered from the festive menu, and I ordered from the Sunday menu. Unfortunately, when we asked for the bill, another staff member informed us that the voucher could not be used because we had ordered from different menus. It seems there was a miscommunication among the staff, which was disappointing. They were unable to honor the voucher, and we will likely struggle to revisit before it expires in a couple of weeks.

The Old Cottage is in a lovely setting. I went as part of a group of 5 on a Sunday evening. Although it was very busy the staff were friendly and attentive. Good choice of food and drinks.

Our servers Maddie and Sophie were extremely helpful, and wonderful interacting with our toddler. They made the whole dining experience so smooth and pleasant! Our food cooked by Blaine and Laura was delicious as well.

First Time Visiting Yesterday, Beautiful Counrty Pub, Good Service, Good Coffee, Amazing Food & Stunning Location. They Have A Lovely Beer Terrace Garden, Plenty Of Free Parking Behind, Right Next Door To A Beautiful Park "Parc Cefn Onn" If You Enjoy A Nice Walk AND They Are Dog Friendly (Bar Area Only) 100 % Recommend, But Definitely Book As Was So Busy!! ♡

Fantastic Sunday lunch. Bottomless gravy is a great touch! Sophie and Ella served us and nothing was too much trouble. Lovely pub with a big beer garden and car park. We booked again for next week before leaving!

The Old Cottage is in a nice setting with outside seating and a car park, set back from the main road. The interior and exterior decor is in keeping with the old inn style. I went with a group on a Sunday evening and it was very busy. The food was good and the service was friendly and attentive. Because it was so busy, I didn't find it very relaxing but overall, I did enjoy my visit here.

A great, London style pub that has great food and perfect location! Staff are great and facilities kept clean. A posh pub with equally posh prices so be prepared!

We ordered a takeaway sunday roast to be collected. And was absolutely delicious, piping hot and packed nicely. You get what you pay for at The Old Cottage, the food is always stunning. We've visited many times and we're never disappointed.

Very nice local gastropub, well worth a visit if in the area. We were recommended and enjoyed it, ticks the boxes, but not sure it's worth a special detour from further afield, however the standards are very good and service is prompt.

This place is wonderful. A great atmosphere and some amazing staff. A girl called Jess works there when I’m in and she is always very friendly and approachable. The chefs are exceptional in this place. The food is incredible. Portion sizes are good and the location is great. Definitely recommend this place to anyone. I’m fussy where I eat and this place is a ten out of ten for me.

We were out with the family to celebrate my birthday. The food was lovely as always when we go there. I had the Steak & Malbec pie which I can recommend. It came with mashed potato, green beans & Broccoli. The pie had plenty of chunky steak and the gravy was delicious. We all enjoyed the food. Our server was Sophie who we could see was working very hard as it was busy there. We didn’t have to wait long for our food to arrive. Sophie was friendly & efficient.

Sadly underwhelming. After reading reviews was looking forward to Sunday lunch. Very busy and nice atmosphere...accomadating staff. But poor food. Luke warm, two potatoes and one carrot each..not cheap either. Disappointed. Real shame.

First time visiting here for food. Decided to go out for a Sunday lunch (instead of me cooking 😉).... absolutely lovely sirloin beef roast and a delicious poached pear dessert by the chefs Kyle & Blain. We ordered the sharing roast for two, but unfortunately, the food arrived cold, with the beef and Yorkshire puddings in particular being actually stone cold. No one came to check if everything was okay, and it felt like there wasn’t even an attempt to heat the food properly before it left the kitchen. The ramekins for bread sauce and horseradish cream were completely empty, which was slightly comical but obviously disappointing as I would have liked the sauce. For £70 with drinks, we expected much better and quite frankly feel shortchanged. The staff seemed visibly stressed and were not particularly welcoming, which added to the overall disappointing experience.

Booked sunday lunch as we knew they were dog friendly. Lovely tasty food our only gripe was the bowl of green veg which was very meagre for two people to share.

Just avoid it. Used to be good many years ago, very disappointing now though. Service was painfully slow, table booked for 19:45, we ordered no starters but mains didnt come until 20:45, food was cold and had clearly been left sitting somewhere not under a heat lamp. No one ever asked if we needed more drinks or how our food was, had to ask for a steak knife for my steak which took an extra 10mins to appear. I dont leave many reviews, but this experience amd the money you pay for it was disappointing. Won't bother with this place again, the pub itself is nice though.

We came here for Valentine’s Day and Gemma and Maddie were fantastic! They were very attentive and always checked in to make sure our food was okay and we had enough drinks. The food was phenomenal. My partner had the T Bone steak and I had the pork belly; both of which were exquisitely cooked! Highly recommend Thankyou !

Sunday vegetarian main option contained no protein. Vegetable Wellington was tasteless with barely no filling:the only identifiable vegetables were possibly spinach and sweede and there was barely any filling.The herbs added to the dish were like mini twigs. The side vegetables were undercooked. The gravy tasteless. Tea and coffee are served with coconut macaroons - tastey Comfortable seating, excellent atmosphere, lovely staff and friendly customers. Dog friendly.

Booked for Sunday lunch today - upon arrival were told we had only one hour to have lunch as very busy and needed the table! Food mediocre! Not impressed!

This was my favourite local for 7 years, and still is for drinking purposes. However, the food quality has changed. We've had a few not so good experiences in a row now so thought I'd write a review in hope that something improves. 3 separate occasions: reheated dry potatoes on a Sunday lunch, undercooked chunky chips, dry hard burger, and a pork belly that was completely fat. The latter I complained about because it was inedible, but otherwise I just eat it, to not ruin a date night. At our last visit two nights ago, we waited so long for someone to clear our plates that we paid and left, rather than order dessert. Sadly it's become a hit or miss pub for us now.

First time in this pub and it will be the last. Didn't have food so gave an average 3 same for service. Pub is full of upper class snobs who made us feel very unwelcome. Bar staff were polite though.

My local so I go regularly to The Cottage, the quality of the food is always good if a little more expensive than the usual pub lunch. The atmosphere is informal in the bar area and, as it's dog friendly, be prepared to share the space with several furry friends, who are mostly well behaved. If you're not a dog lover, book a table in the dining room.

Excellent service, very friendly and attentive staff. Food and drinks arrived promptly, excellent quality food we had the seabass and banana blossom for mains and the port and mushrooms for mains, highly recommend.

We had an absolutely amazing time again. We have used a birthday voucher and made a tradition out of it now as a pair of friends. Food was amazing and our server Ashley was great as well with making sure we have everything we needed. It's always a pleasure!

I would have liked to scored this better, but there were a few things at fault. One was the fact that the place was so cold and many including ourselves had coats on most of the time. Mentioned it to a bust waitress who said nothing could be done. That leads me onto the staff, although pleasant, it didn't really seem enough on to take care of the customers, with long wait for our initial drinks order and then food order. Food was just OK,ni was hoping for a lot better, fillet steak did not resemble a fillet, I know we should have told them, but having one of our 6 meals going back would have made someone wait even longer. Won't be returning for a very long time, although another family member did say it was alot better when she visited it a few months before.

We had Sunday lunch and the food was lovely but we were disappointed with everything else. The young waiting staff were very friendly but seemed to lack guidance/supervision. They were too young to handle alcohol and no-one else seemed to be available. There were no condiments on the table and we had to ask for some. We were brought a completely empty salt cellar and after being unable to find waiting staff, we had to borrow one from another table. The woman behind the bar was useless - very slow and repeatedly getting things wrong (the same lady previously served us at the Plough in Whitchurch when she only wrote down 3 meals when there were 4 of us and so one person was left without a dinner!) We ordered a bottle of wine to have with our dinner but it didn’t come. We had to ask twice for it and eventually went to the bar to tell her to cancel it as we had almost finished our food. We had to go to the bar ourselves mid food to order other drinks. When our plates were taken, we were asked if we wanted desert - we said we would but wanted to wait a while as we were full. No one came back to us. Eventually we went to the bar to order coffees. Our order included oat milk due to an allergy and we were told by that same female bartender that this was available and the order was taken and added to our bill. After half an hour we had to ask where the coffees were. A few minutes later, a member of waiting staff told us the table was needed in about 15 minutes for a other booking - when we explained we were still waiting for our coffees, she went to speak to the female bartender who had taken our order. She then came over to tell us that oat milk was not available - despite her having clearly stated that it was. There was no apology from her for her incorrect information or for leaving it over half an hour to tell us. It was a shambles so we just paid the bill and left. For the first time ever we did not leave a tip. After leaving this review, we got a response from the Old Cottage apologising for the poor service and offering us a voucher to return. But despite emailing them twice as instructed, they haven’t bothered to even acknowledge my messages and no voucher materialised. So a completely empty offer seemingly done just to look good on here! So terrible service in the restaurant and an even worse follow up customer service.

My first time to the Old Cottage tonight. All the staff were tentative and friendly. Maddie and Ash looked after us so well and the chefs cooked our food beautifully!!! Will definitely be visiting again.

Ashley served us and he was soo kind, friendly, inclusive and accommodating. They moved us to a quieter table as the first table was in the middle of the restaurant and we were with a young person who had autism. They couldn't have done more to help make her comfortable and engage with her. Delicious food too!

The open fire was “broken” so they couldn’t light it. Quite cold inside as a result.

Food was okay, pretty good but didn't blow me away. The location is lovely and a really cute atmosphere, but sadly the service we had on our visit wasn't great. Very slow, waitress actively avoided eye contact and checking in. We waited a long time for the food, when we finished the meal it took a really long time to collect the plates despite seeing the waitress not doing anything near by, and her noticing we had finished. However we felt almost rushed to the pay the bill even when the whole table wasn't present. It was a really odd experience.

Celebrated a special birthday meal at The Old Cottage with 12 guests. The staff could not have been more accommodating! Everyone really enjoyed their meals- steaks cooked perfectly as requested, fish and chips were delicious too. The service was great and we did not feel rushed at all despite staying for over three hours! Thank you to Sophie, our server and all the team- we will be seeing you again soon😂

A little underwhelmed to be honest. You walk into this pretty, quaint pub, then you're shoved in a noisy room out back that's basically inside the kitchen. We had to ask twice for condiments, the only thing one of us wanted on the menu they didn't have and then when the bill came we were overcharged by £9 which they apologised for when brought to their attention. Service was very friendly whilst inefficient. Wouldn't return.

Popped in for a drink. Lovely place, good atmosphere, menu looked good. Place was busy for mid week. Plenty of parking, lovely outside gardens.

Very tasty meal but the Christmas meal has definitely gotten smaller (compared to last year) and more expensive.

Three of us ordered the dirty burger, one of them with an extra patty. Each burger patty was hard and dry, overcooked frozen patties are the only way I can describe them. The other guest ordered a chicken salad and commented on how dry and overcooked the chicken was. They even had to use our sauces to add a bit of moistness to the chicken. I expected more from an establishment that markets themselves as fine dinning.

Truly awful food. The so-called 'British steak and malbec pie' had NO edible meat at all; it was ALL fat and gristle. Honestly the worst steak pie I have ever (not) eaten. My partner's 'caramelised banana blossom stew' was tasty but the size of a starter. At nearly £18, completely unacceptable. The pizzas looked good, but that was too late! Not in a position to say anything at the time as a friend was treating us.

We came for the Santa breakfast today . It was a fab breakfast then the grandchildren met Santa. It was so cosy with the log fires and it was very individual no having to stand in a queue to meet Santa . The staff as ever were amazing nothing was to much trouble .
