The Old Barn Inn in Newport

This place is beautiful. I used to go here all the times a kid, traveling from chepstow. The food is a blessing and the environment is absolutely outstanding. The chocolate cake (if still served) is ELITE by the way. Part of my Dad's funeral was even held here. Please visit this place!

Lovely scenic views, great night sleep

Went here for mother's day Sunday lunch. The food was really good and really tasty. Very nice. I feel that more could be done to learn about non-binary/non-conforming/beyond the binary folk such as myself and make them feel that more understood, included, catered for, respected, etc I'm not here to slander or be defamatory, I'm not making any accusations at all. This is my personal perspective and opinions. I think nowadays you don't need to have "ladies" and "gents" worded signs for the loos, but I'm not suggesting unisex toilet space either. Just lose the worded signs. The manager came across aa uncomfortable when I offered my constructive intended feedback before leaving, I could be wrong I just worry easily about making people feel that way it's never my intention. Would be nice to offer a 2 course option as a minimum for occasions such as mother's day as well as the 3 course option not have it as "guests booking agree to the 3 course menu" it's not all about making your lives easier only (NOT an accusation, but that's a suspicion of mine) and perhaps more dairy free/VE dessert options. But overall I enjoyed my visit here, I'd return again if my mum and dad wanted to come here particularly for occasions. Thank you for the good food and relatively decent service.

The Old Barn is my local bar restaurant. The food and drinks are lovely. A good range of food on both early bird and a la carte menus. I love the lasagne and cottage pie. Sunday roasts are great. The staff are friendly and offer a warm welcome especially Sian.

We attended a friend's wake at The old Barn and the food was delicious. A good selection of breads, coleslaw and mixed salad bowls, fresh and smoked salmon, prawns, selection of sliced beef, ham and turkey. Minted potatoes. Waiting staff attentive. The food was that nice and fresh we priced up for Sunday lunch. £13.95 for 1 meat or £16.95 for 2 meats. The desert cabinet looked well stocked. The everyday menu looked very good value as well. There is disabled parking only a couple of spaces though. Less mobile guests can get in the restaurant via a ramp. The old barn has rooms but we didn't look around those so can't comment, and we didn't use the toilets so again can't comment. Easy access for the M4, if you want to break up a long journey or attending local concerts at Newport or Cardiff. Would highly recommend the food.

We went here for my little sisters leaving do. The staff were fantastic and extremely accommodating. The food was so good a few people took their leftovers home. I would definitely book this place again for a function.

Still one of the best hotels that I have ever stopped at.

Been there for dinner a few times over a few years. The building is really nice, well kept and clean. The staff are polite but the food I've had both times isn't great, average and considering the location and how nice the venue is it's the only thing that stands out. Pricing is fair, would happily pay more for higher quality food. Never stayed in the hotel/rooms so I can't comment on any of that.

Recently celebrated the life of my nan. The staff were great especially dealing with all the kids running around. We stayed the night and enjoyed the tasty breakfast the next morning. Rooms were great and clean.

We recently used The Old Barn Inn for my Grandmothers 90th birthday celebration on a Saturday afternoon. The location was perfect for the size of group (30 something) so it felt really nice for an intimate gathering. We had the hot food which everyone raved about, plenty of it, piping hot and super tasty! The service was fab and all the staff from start to finish were really attentive and helpful. Really pleased with our choice of venue.

SHOCKING FOOD - Reheated, stale old Roast Dinner! Extremely Disappointed Christmas Meal Experience I recently dined at this establishment with my elderly parents on the 9th of December for a Christmas meal, and I must say it was an experience I'd rather forget. We opted for the festive menu, expecting a delightful meal, but unfortunately, it was anything but that. To put it bluntly, the roast dinner we received was the worst I've ever had. It was painfully obvious that the food had been reheated. The potatoes were hard, and the Yorkshire puddings were undeniably stale. The gravy was a gloopy mess, flavorless, and quite frankly, it tasted like something of cheap and inferior quality. Now, here's the part that truly disappointed me. We had traveled a grueling three hours, halfway to meet our family for an important get-together, a six hour round trip! Despite our dissatisfaction with the meal, we chose not to complain on the spot as my elderly parents were already upset. They simply wanted to enjoy our time together, especially considering we won't be seeing them on Christmas Day. However, the following morning, I decided to email the management to share our feedback and express our disappointment. To my astonishment, their response was far from satisfactory. They essentially brushed off our concerns, suggesting that because we didn't complain during the meal, we must have been content and were now having a change of heart. This response was not only dismissive but also frustrating. I went a step further and called the manager to discuss the matter. Unfortunately, this conversation only added to my disappointment. The manager insisted that the food had been freshly prepared that day, despite clear evidence to the contrary. I even attached photos of the potatoes we received, which were unmistakably reheated and far from freshly prepared. What's more, I've since come across other reviews from patrons who had similar experiences with reheated Christmas meals at this establishment. It seems our experience was not isolated. When you go out for a Christmas meal, you expect fresh, high-quality dishes, not food that has been reheated, with hardened potatoes and stale Yorkshire puddings. Even the starters were disappointing, with limp lettuce and browning leaves in the prawn cocktail, indicating food that was prepared well in advance. This experience was so disappointing that I've taken a step I've never taken before—I will be initiating a chargeback for this meal. The manager's assertion that our failure to complain on the spot somehow invalidated our concerns is both disappointing and concerning. In conclusion, I feel compelled to share my experience to caution others. If you're considering booking a meal at this establishment, I strongly advise against it. Our experience left us feeling that our money was wasted on a cheap, reheated meal that did not meet our expectations.

We stayed at the Old Barn Inn during October for 1 night . The Hotel looks extremely inviting from the outside a very attractive building with a very large car park and although the hotel and restaurant seemed busy there were still parking spaces . The reception staff were friendly and welcoming ,our room was larger than we expected and nicely appointed and clean and the beds were very comfortable. In the corridor the lamp and table etc needed dusting and there were a few cobwebs hopefully just a one off or maybes the hotel is understaffed as so many places are now but it wasn’t enough to stop me from staying as our room was fine . We stayed for our evening meal and we were served by young Peter who was an absolute joy he was extremely friendly and made us laugh which made the evening ! he maintained professionalism and was extremely attentive with extra drinks etc . We ordered the surf and turf which turned out to be huge and was extremely tasty ! my son and husband ordered the pork which they felt was over done but we had such a lovely evening we did not want to mention it and spoil the evening. We also had a free cooked breakfast the following morning which was nice . I have worked in hospitality and customer service for many years and wouldn’t hesitate to employ Peter ,a real asset to the restaurant and we wish him well for the future! Came out with family and had early bird menu. Absolutely lovely food and my husband said his pie was one of the nicest one he ever had

First time eating here and was a last moment impromptu decision. The staff were very helpful and polite, the Sunday lunch was both fantastic and large. Desserts was also brilliant, the home made mini Victoria sponge with cream was both amazing and not mini in size!. Two courses for two people, with drinks and coffees for £55. Will definitely be returning. Big thank-you to the staff.

Tasty food, great service. Excellent choice on the menu. The venue is very nice and can see why people would celebrate their wedding day here.

Stayed the night. Room comfortable and bathroom very nice …the one downside with the room..it was very warm and open windows didn't help. Staff without exception lovely, friendly and helpful. The restaurant was busy with an event so should not have taken our booking for 7! We waited at least 10 minutes at the table with no one approaching, we had to go up and ask for a menu. When waitress finally came to the table she mentioned that they were very busy and we asked if the kitchen could cope as they were so busy. Her response was “ well I don’t cook it” . Food good but dessert menu took 30 minutes after finishing main course to arrive and then 15-20 minutes to take order so we ordered to take away. There was no sign of any waiting staff during this period. When we left without paying any tip the waitress shouted after us “ thank you very much” we have not been here for a couple of years and will wait at least another couple of years before returning. The service here was a zero out of 5! Worst we’ve had in any restaurant in the last year or so.

Not impressed at all with Sunday lunch. It was my first and last visit. I’m trying to be not too harsh but I can’t find anything good to say.

We went for lunch today 24th March at 12 noon I have been a regular diner for over 25 years and I have to admit I was very disappointed with the food for the 1st time ever I love my steak and ale pie and regularly recommend it to friends and family however this time instead of juicy tender chunks of meat it was sliced and chewy with 3 large pieces of fat/gristle in it it was as if the meat was sliced off a previously cooked joint of beef and reheated/cooked again like I said this was the 1st time ever that I have had a bad meal

I stayed overnight as I was away with work and the best thing about the place was the service, absolutely exceptional! Yes there were little issues, there often are, but things were resolved immediately and with a smile, so no problems at all The staff at reception were always friendly and helpful, while the waiting staff were warm and attentive Breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious. Highly recommend the place!

I have had several very good meals at the old barn. I would have recommended it to most people for the bar good atmosphere and surroundings. I have called for a drink and met with friends for Christmas meals or just as a couple. However having begun to think of it as my local and favourite venue I have been turned away now on two occasions due to being told that"the whole place has been taken over for a function "This has resulted in my returning to another favourite the rock and fountain nearby. I believe that they need to decide what they want to be. Surely they should not be turning locals away. I will give serious consideration to visiting again.

On arival the carpark looked well groomed. On entry the pub looked clean and tidy however on closer inspection you do notice the bottom of the bench seats are very grubby and most of the seats looked tired.

My husband, my son,his baby and myself visited today for lunch. The baby is only 6 months old so too young to eat a meal. Lunch was fine. When I checked the bill I found we had been charged for 4 meals not 3. My husband phoned, only to be told it was his own fault for not checking at the time. The man on the phone refused to check the receipt or the bill and was quite rude about it. Not the service I expect. CHECK ALL BILLS.

We booked this venue for our 2019 wedding venue full of excitement. Unfortunately due to months of redundancy we finally had to cancel all wedding plans with all but one of our purported ‘refundable ‘ deposits helping us greatly with our plight. You guessed it - not only did this heartless, ruthless, mean patron REFUSE to refund us the value of a week’s food on the table, but a week later text to ask us most delightfully (cos she didn’t really know or care who we are as long as we were to grease her palm) to pop in and see her in order to decide on our menu and decorations for our ‘special’ day. Wanted to rate ZERO but this seems not to be possible

Had the tuna steak and immediately knew it was frozen and out of a packet. Disappointing. The vibe appeared to appeal to only local visitors.

Service was on the verge of being rude, the staff are not interested in being there. In fact they are doing you a favor by serving you. The food was below average. I was very disappointed and I will not be returning. I do not recommend this place whats so ever, it has declined over the years.

Visited on the spur of the moment as M4 was gridlocked, and we turned off and this was the first pub we came too. There was a wedding reception taking place, but we went to the public bar to get a drink.

Have been to the Old Barn many times over the years and for lunch more recently with colleagues. Took a stroll over on Bank Holiday Monday evening and was pleasantly surprised at the ambience, service and food quality. Ordered steaks which were very nice and cooked as requested. Pepper sauce was 5 star and very peppery! Ordered the side dish roasted vegetables which included sweet potatoes, leaks, courgettes so didn't need the sweet potato fries and onion rings that also came with the steak! Both really enjoyed our meals. Prices are at the higher end of pub food at £20 + sauce for fillet. As some other reviews have suggested; its not posh there and the staff are local and fairly relaxed about life but so friendly.

Used the Old Barn as midway point to have a look around the coast. It’s in the country although you can see and hear the motorway depending on wind direction for light noise. Excellent breakfast and good value evening meals especially the Early Bird menu before 7:00 pm. We had an upstairs room which was a good size, there is a very very short outside walk to the restaurant/ pub area. Not so much a Pub area except for bar stools more for eating although no problem just having a drink.

This pub had been a favourite of ours for a long time but it is not what it once was. The decor is starting to look tired, as are the staff. We went there on a Sunday evening. All the tables had reserved signs on them so we nearly left but the barman said we could sit anywhere. And that was repeated, over and over again as more people came in. It seemed that only one of the tables had actually been reserved that evening. The staff were seemed to shuffle their way around as if they didn't want to be there. When our starters were brought out, mine was handed to me across the table instead of the waitress coming around to my side. This was repeated with the main course and when the dishes were cleared. Add this to the waiter asking my husband "have you finished, Bud", it was not appreciated. The food was lovely and hot but the lack lustre attitude was very off-putting and I don't think we will be returning.

I am absolutely disgusted with the treatment we have just received from you my husband booked a table for 19.00 this evening 14/04 for my 60th birthday it was booked about 3 weeks ago my daughter phoned on Thursday the 12/04 to ask if it was ok to bring balloons and a birthday cake over and was told yes it's fine bring them over and yet this afternoon 5 hours before you ring and tell us you are closed to the public for a wedding you have ruined my birthday I will be telling everybody about this absolutely diabolical.

We didn't think to book but they managed to squeeze us in. Food orders didn't start until 6pm but they let us order before 6pm so when they started cooking we wouldn't have to wait long. Was well worth it and definitely will book again. Excellent service, friendly and helpful staff. Food was absolutely lovely, dad said it was out of this world. Thank you.

This is the second time my wife and I have ate at this restaurant and had to be accommodated at the last minute after walking out of another local restaurant a short time before. Although all the tables in the bar area were full and the staff were extremely busy, a table for 8 was put together in the hotel restaurant and we enjoyed a first class meal. All the staff were extremely friendly, the standard of food was excellent, service was perfectly timed while both drinks and food were reasonably priced. What started as a traumatic evening with family turned out to be very successful thanks to the staff at The Old Barn.

Popped in today with my Mum, husband and 3 year old this afternoon. Staff were busy but very accommodating, even though there was a wedding at the venue all were very attentive. We were really impressed having recently moved to the area from Bristol and looking for new local spots that are family friendly but do not compromise on providing a tasteful experience for dining or a casual drink. Having only ordered some starters to share with a bottle of (very decent!) wine on this occasion but we will definitely return to work through the menu. I also loved the idea of some of the private dining spaces they had there for some upcoming family gatherings, all in all I'd say it was a really good find..

The welcome was friendly and the service was quick but not pushy. The choice of meals was good and not expensive. We did not have to wait too long for the food to arrive an when it did it was hot and tasty. Will certainly go again.

Me and my partner stayed over night at the Barn last weekend and we were very happy with the experience. The room was lovely and very clean and the bathroom was gorgeous. Looked very new and sparkling clean. Lovely powerful shower. Comfy bed and nice white crisp bedding. The place itself is very well decorated and reception area and breakfast room is very welcoming. Meal was lovely and the portion sizes were massive. Good value for money. Breakfast was good quality and plenty of choice. Would deffinatly recomend this place to everyone and will hopefully be back in the future. Very friendly staff too.

Went as part of a party, was sat round two round tables, ate from the early bird menu which had plenty of choice and reasonable prices. I had the steak which was served with chips and peas you had to pay extra if you wanted mushrooms. The lamb was served with nice mash but friend would have liked veg with it.

Family gathering, only wanted a light lunch, menu had a good range, of starters and mains, we had gammon, chicken curry and a lamb dish. Ordered at bar, not a long wait, considering most tables were occupied. The food itself was well presented and hot, all plates were cleared.

OK. So the buildings, rooms, facilities, views etc are all very good but this place is let down by the detail. on our first night we tried to put the electric heater on only to find that it didn't work so we spent the rest of that night in bed as it was a very cold night. We complained the next day and it was promptly fixed. We did not like the fact that our room had an adjoining door with no exterior lock and although we were told that there could be no access without us opening the door we were uncomfortable about it. On the second night we found that we were in the middle of a wedding party so very little sleep there and just to compound that, the main door, which was opposite our room, had a closing action similat to Arkwrights till, so that banged continuously. On the first morning the alarm next door went off repeatedly and despite us telling the staff it did so the following morning and they had told us that the room was empty! Finally we found that the staff/service was very patchy and overall was not good enough for an £85 a night stay.Such a pity as for very little outlay but a lot more attention to detail this would be a lovely venue.

The weather was great, the view was great, the staff were very helpful, The meal was already chosen as it was a wedding reception, which had given us time to choose what we wanted, when the meal came it was really very good not much left on the plates, there is a car park on the flat, to get into the restaurant or bar there is either steps or a slope so if having walking problems there is good safe way in.

Bulk sized portions of reasonable pub grub, in a nice venue that was spoilt by mostly being ignored by the staff. Only one had a smile, but overall we were made to feel that we were a nuisance for intruding on their day.It was an age before anyone came to take a drinks order and then once the drinks were served, we waited an age for the food orders to be taken. It was another age before we could get anyone's attention for deserts and to get the bill was a trek to the bar.This place could be so much more, but the owners must make enough for them not to care.We won't be going back!

We were staying in the hotel, & after a long hard day walking in the Brecon Beacons, we were looking forward to a nice dinner. The ambience wasn't that nice - choice of intrusive music was poor, menus weren't freely available & done tables hadn't been cleared. Menu choice was limited, & the majority of those dishes we found out weren't available. No specials board. Out if the two dishes available we chose chicken curry - it was a sweet salty pre-prepared gloop with rubbery cheap chicken & no sign of any vegetables or other ingredients. It wasn't very nice. Not a particularly enjoyable end to the day. As I write this lying in bed about to go down to breakfast, I wonder if they will have run out of bacon, egg & toast! Probably won't return.
