Had requested to sit in carriage when booking in advance but on arrival was shown to what looked like a make shift table tightly squeezed between 2 other tables,When I questioned why we weren’t sitting where I asked the older main male waiter told me that there was building work being done even though I could see through open doors that all tables were laid ready for use from this moment on he childishly ignored us for the rest of the meal and made us wait and wait for service.Food is at best was above average and I was given the smallest piece of fish they could find just a bit bigger than a fish finger. My wife’s desert was supposed to be a mini and when it came it was full size when asked the waitress said she’d sort it and brought back the same piece but in half they then proceeded to charge for full price. We questioned the main waiter she had no way of ignoring us now as we were paying and he then said he couldn’t remember prices and passed us to someone else.We won’t recommend j28 to anyone again which has obviously changed hands for the worse

Visited with the family to celebrate my mums birthday. Always enjoyed a great Sunday lunch here in the past but sadly Junction 28 has disappointingly declined. Vegetables overcooked, pork loin tough and fatty, roasties soggy, uncooked and barely warm, yorkshire pudding soggy, gravy minimal. No more complimentary bread and gorgeous homemade butter served while waiting. Overall very underwhelming, boring and average.

Booked a table in the converted railway carriage, but were given a table in the centre of a drab and dreary large dining room. Choices on the set menu very limited. I chose the mussels to start, which were tough. I had the cod with rarebit on it for main - a strange combination which didn’t really work. Veg cost £5.20 extra. Hubby had sourdough bread to start which was nice, then the gourmet burger. Onion rings very greasy. We didn’t bother with dessert. The decor in the room desperately needs refreshing and updating. Sadly we won’t be returning.

We were regulars for special occasions at this restaurant. Unfortunately, our experience last night was terrible. Staff were great, absolutely no fault of theirs. Food was extremely slow to come out. Took 20 or more minutes to get our basic bread and butter. The butter came in pots the size of egg cups. This is now paid for, not complimentary. No white bread, only sourdough. Waited approximately 1.5 hours for main, but then decided to cancel and leave, as service was slow and hearing other diners complain. The staff are amazing, so dont blame them for the issues under new ownership £80 spent on 2 starters and drinks was not a good night for us. Also, this restaurant no longer accepts cash. Card only. Would be nice if they made this clear when booking. I personally prefer cash, while we still have it…. Hopefully this was a one off…

We were there with friends for the Valentines meal. We had a pre-drink in the pub next door and only wished we had stayed there as it was warm, friendly and a there was a good atmosphere. Upon arriving at Junction 28 we were left waiting for 10 minutes with no acknowledgement from anyone. We were eventually shown to a table in a cold corner. We should have received a glass of prosecco on arrival but nothing was forthcoming. We were served our very average starters quite swiftly. When we had finished we still hadn't been offered any drinks so we asked for our prosecco and the wine list. We ordered a bottle of Malbec but a Merlot arrived. Then we waited and waited and waited for our main meal. After no sign of it 1 hour 20 minutes after arriving we asked for it. All this time serving staff had been clearing and wiping down tables around us but no one noticed we hadn't been served our main course. When the main course did arrive (which we had pre-ordered a week previously) two out of the four had to be returned as they were cold, The chicken was inedible as it was rough as old boots, the sharing platter meat was very fatty and the stuffed peppers were inedible as there was more salt in them than the Red sea. It came with chips that were not even on the menu. It had now become farcical and we decided to forget about dessert, leave and ask for our deposit back. On the plus side there were no issues in getting a refund and the pianist and cellist were very good. We were not the only ones complaining, it was obvious something went seriously wrong that night and it didn't help by the fact the serving staff were clueless and appeared to have had no training and there was a complete lack of communication with the kitchen, the servers and management. We will not be returning and would not recommend this restaurant.

So very disappointing. Let me start with the "highlights" of the night. Staff forgot that we paid a deposit for the booking so didn't take it off the bill (which we had to send back 3 times because they firstly didn't include the drinks, then the deposit wasn't taken into consideration, then you best believe I asked them to remove that ridiculous service charge). My partner's cutlery was dirty and sticky. The dishes were overly expensive AND tiny. My beef wellington didn't even look like one. It looked like it had been microwaved. My partner's steak looked like hideous I actually felt so sorry for him. We didn't even bother ordering desserts we could not wait to leave. Took ages to get the bill. The restaurant was cold and we were still hungry when we left. We got a Mcdonalds on the way home and we were much happier with that. This was meant to be a really nice date night for the two of us and it just felt so disappointing. £100 down the drain.

If I could give 0 I would. What an appalling experience to be coming to a restaurant that we’ve been too many times for birthdays and celebrations, we are so disappointed. We got there at 6:20, 10 minutes before our table was booked at 6:30, queuing out of the door, understandable as Valentines has just passed. We finally got sat down with drinks being served with some lovely staff! We then placed our order with the waitress who was so lovely. Usually we get asked if we would like bread before starters to come which wasn’t even asked. Noting this, we asked the waitress for the bread. To then being served 4 slices of hard sourdough bread with a small pot of the butter. Previous experiences there was usually a basket filled full with different types of warm soft bread with multiple pots of butter! Our starts came, and in all fairness, they were amazing! The garlic mushrooms was stunning! We really enjoyed these apart from the croquets which was like mush with both parties! Not a single bit of meat which stated on the menu! Between the main we had 4 rounds of Guinness which was from a can which was horrible. From previous experience in a pub, this was not good standard especially for a restaurant with such high class! To be served pints of Guinness in a cider glass??? Our mains later arrived around 8:10/8:20, understandable and happy to wait as each table near enough occupied! What a disgrace! 3 Louisiana meat platters, all that were vile! And that’s an understatement. I personally couldn’t eat my meal and then my farther had to leave his meal to be sick after eating a large amount of fat in the sausage, just to clarify this was not cheese as stated in the menu! They didn’t look cooked on any platters, no grill marks at all! The onion rings & chips on all meals were dripping in oil, probably because they were dropped in the oil before it was fully heated to the correct temperature. The chicken was hard and overpowering. The brisket had lovely flavour and cooked well but so much fat! The ribs on my plate were burnt and couldn’t be touched My niece couldn’t even eat her chips as they were dripping with oil! Two of the other meals were amazing and was enjoyed by both parties! We had learnt at the end of our experience near enough every guest in this restaurant had complained. Instead of taking it to the manager the hard working staff were to blame. They were amazing all night and very hard working. We will not be visiting again nor recommending to anyone!

Having been coming here for Valentine’s night the last 4 years we were really looking forward to our evening however on arrival we were greeted with chaos! The Bar/arrival area was packed with guests waiting for tables. Once at our table we were not offered drinks so had to collar a waiter to order. Starter arrived which was fine but still no drinks so again had to chase. We then waited around half an hour for our main, when it arrived it was the completely wrong order so it was sent back and we waited for the correct one to arrive. The main when it arrived was awful - we had a sharing platter, lukewarm sausages, one chicken skewer to share and lamb lollipops that were too tough to cut through and overbearingly salty so couldn’t be eaten. The dessert was again ok apart from the salted caramel sauce it was again far, far too salty to be eaten!! No more drinks were offered we had to flag down another waiter. The bill arrived with a service charge which I found unusual for a table of two! We had a taxi booked so took the bill to the bar to pay cash which was refused as this is now a card only establishment!! A very disappointing, disorganised, over crowded evening. Suffice to say we will look to go elsewhere next year, we really don’t know what’s happened to the place!!

Went here for valentines night, food was ok, starter deep fried as you would expect with tempura prawns, lot of oil with the plate soggy instead of crunchy. Me and my wife sat right in the middle of the room everyone walking past us no real privacy, Waited 15 mins for my drink and had to request drinks, while sat at the table we were offered other tables food twice. People complaining around us, waitress was really nice but had to apologise to lots of tables. Was quite expensive and below expectations, won’t return for another valentines night. This was very disappointing and compromised of a few dry cream crackers, cheddar and stilton and soft celery and apple. I had to ask for some butter and chutney otherwise I wouldn't have eaten any of it. My dad ordered the gluten free roast pork. This was also disappointing because it arrived minus the crackling and yorkshire pudding. Gluten free alternatives should have been offered. We went on Christmas Day for lunch which we were really looking forward to. How wrong we were ! The starter of scallops was raw and inedible, the main course of Turkey - roast potatoes and parsnip sodden with fat and Not crispy and gravy tasted like a cheap solidified stock cube. Desert worst of all - claimed to be Pavalova consisted of 2 solid disks of meringue so hard unable to get spoon through and an ultra sweet concoction of sweet creamy filling - one mouthful was more than enough. Coffee hadn’t arrived after waiting half an hour so we left. Never again .

Had to park about half a mile away as car park was packed, friendly welcome on going in and shown straight to our seats in the railway car section, nice variety for the the Christmas lunch menu. Drinks arrived promptly and starters came soon afterwards, we were asked twice if we wanted anymore drinks as mains arrived and we asked if we could have more gravy and some mustard and cranberry sauce these arrived halfway through our meal after chasing it up and one of our party asked for a pint which never arrived. Probably 40/45 minutes later we started looking around to order dessert and had a job finding anyone to do this, everyone seemed to be concentrating on clearing away other empty tables, anyway dessert was lovely and then we sat there for another 15/20 minutes before anyone was available ta ask for for the bill and in the end had to go up to the bar to get anyone to take payment. We did ask that the already included service charge was removed as we thought the service was poor and we would leave a tip as we thought necessary and not what they were asking, on payment they don't take cash only cards. To sum up its a nice place with a relaxing atmosphere and not overly expensive, food was lovely but whoever is in charge of waiters and waitresses needs to give them a bit of a kick when it comes to service, we weren't asked how our food was and they lost money on extra drinks

We have eaten here regularly over the years and booked here to celebrate a birthday with our family from Yorkshire. We all had the festive menu which was excellent as always and the waiting staff were lovely. However when I paid the bill they had charged me for a far more expensive white and red wine than I had ordered. When I queried this the member of staff behind the bar said "well you drank it didn't you". I pointed out that I had assumed that those delivered to the table were the bottles we had ordered. This had happened to me before but I thought I had misordered. They adjusted the bill for the one bottle but not the other. Maybe they should number the wines to avoid further confusion. Also the two gentlemen behind the bar need to review their customer service skills. For the first time ever I felt uncomfortable there

Older gentleman behind the bar, guessing he's new, didn't have a clue about the soft drinks and openly admitted it. Pork was fatty and crackling soft and measly. Roasties floppy and soft and served with one tiny piece of brocoli and an abundance of peas. Dessert slopped on plate, not nicely presented and very underwhelming. Mint that was stuck in the top of my dessert was brown and wilting. Only saving grace was the lovely serving staff, we left a tip just for their service and nothing else. Absolutely gutted it's gone downhill as this was always a favourite of ours.

Really lovely and friendly service. We were made to feel very welcome. It was great to have my own vegan menu, when eating out most places only offer 1-2 options. Food was delicious we will definitely return if visiting the area again.

Locale of Newport, Junction28 is a lovely place balance between classic elegance and contemporary innovation. The moment you step through its doors, you're greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience. On my recent visit, I began with the Caerphilly Cheese Fondue, which was perfect, my fiancée had the Duck Confit Croquettes which was cooked perfectly, and both presented beautifully making for a well-rounded starter. For the main course, I opted for the Louisiana Meat Platter, again this was presented beautifully but very but! The meal was very dry and even come with frozen chips not freshly cut which is what you would expect, as a result I left more than half of the meal. The side dish had stone clod chips and not that pleasant, I left that after a single taste. My fiancée had the Diamond Rump Steak, the meat was tender and juicy, with a deep, Savory flavour that spoke volumes about the quality of the ingredients used. This dish was perfect apart from the chips, these let the main dish down they should have been home cooked and not frozen. The dessert menu is equally impressive, based on the dryness of the one main meal and chips we didn’t have a dessert. Service at Junction28 is top-notch, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who are more than happy to offer recommendations or answer any queries. In conclusion, Junction28 offers a dining experience that is both sophisticated and approachable. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking to enjoy a fantastic meal. The quality of the food, the elegance of the presentation, and the exceptional service all combine to make Junction28 a standout choice in Newport's dining scene. Highly recommended, I just hope they take notice of what’s been said here, such a small improvement would make this a perfect dining experience, considering we went they for a birthday meal not one member of staff said congratulations despite me adding it to the notes when I booked.

From the start the service was very welcoming from the staff. Food definitely has gone downhill compared to before. Starts ok, but nothing special. Mains, steak looked like it had been kept in foil. It was OK, but it was not worth the price it cost. Dessert had the mini selection, very disappointing, I haven't got a clue what the dried out sponge thing was. Cheesecake nice, jaffa thing horrible and the mini brulee was nice except the sultanas at the bottom. No cream or ice cream on plate to accompany them dessert. For the price, it's definitely not worth it.

Friendly staff who were happy and helpful. We sat in the first part of the restaurant not the carriage themed area. Felt a little dated in the area we were in and sat in the very corner by two doorways that were very busy. Starters were enjoyed by the 5 of us, however the main course for some of us was not so great. The chicken dish was very salty and the beef dinner was very bland with very watery and bland gravy. There was a mix up with information on desserts and so 3 of us didn't have the dessert we were told we were getting. All in all, a nice place with friendly staff. Not on our list of favourites though.

We have been visiting for many years, sadly to say each time of our recent visits it has gone down hill. Sunday lunch today was very poor, beef was cold, and looked like it had been spat out on the plate, no presentation. Yorkshire pudding could have passed as a pancake, rest of veg was not hot. We also had the added bonus of someone’s hair in the vegetables. Staff friendly as always a was very apologetic and offered a round of drinks as an apology. Food hygiene now down to a rating of 3 this is now conveniently located behind the bush!

We chose Junction 28 to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary this weekend. Yesterday, we had an afternoon tea party for 38 family and friends. The food was really good - sandwiches freshly made with a variety of fillings, small cakes and macaroons followed by warmed scones with jam and clotted cream. Tea and coffee or even hot chocolate. Today, we went back for Sunday lunch with the family. Excellent food, good sized portions and service was excellent too. Thanks to Tom and Gareth for helping us in the planning of the celebrations and to all the amazing staff for their hard work.

We were visiting family in Wales and we visited here for Sunday lunch. It was busy but the staff were so friendly and efficient. The lunch itself was very good and we all enjoyed what we had ordered, genourous portions and well cooked. Hope to visit again soon.

My good friend kept telling me I should goto this place, I finally did yesterday, I wish I listened to her sooner, what a terrific place to eat. We were given a warm welcome, the staff were so professional, friendly, courteous, helpful but not overdone. Choice on the menu was varied. We had a set 3 course meal, excellent value for money. Each course was well presented, the attention to detail, made me feel like the person who cooked it had a real passion for food. The food tasted good and cooked to perfection including all the fresh vegetables. Please go, it's up there with the best, it really is.

Everything started so well. A lovely warm welcome from the hostess and the bar man. We order starters which were delicious. Then our waiter started to make us feel uncomfortable by making comments such as ‘I can tell you’re going to be trouble’ and ‘unfortunately I am not on the menu’ amongst others. I can tell he was trying to be funny but it just came across as lecherous. The worst part was when he handed us a dessert menu and proceeded to make a purring noise which we all felt uncomfortable with. We ordered the steak and when it came it was over cooked so we sent it back to the kitchen. The same waiter came over to tell me that the steak was fine and that’s how a medium rare steak was supposed to be cooked. It was not even pink and I know how a medium rare steak is supposed to look. He came across as patronising and rude. He took it back to the kitchen and replaced it with another steak. When he bought it back he said the chef has done this rare for you. Again patronising like I didn’t know how my steak was cooked. The meal ended with a delightful dessert. I don’t think we’d return purely for the waiter and his service. Disappointing as the place has the potential to be amazing as the starters and desserts were great!

1st time I've visited here and I'll definitely be returning. The food we all had was perfect, portion sizes are very generous and we all enjoyed every course. The service was fast and efficient, there is a star of the whole set up and that's "Lillo" He has the unique ability to truly read the room! He is an asset and a rare kind of person that you don't often find! He made our evening even more enjoyable and he was a pleasure to meet.

Had a great meal here whilst staying near Cardiff for the rugby with my GF. Food was amazing sirloin steak cooked to perfection, the converted train carriage we ate in was very quirky but nice experience. I also like they have a lounge waiting area where you can have a drink until the table ia ready. Staff were great, friendly, attentive, would definitely dine here again if im back in the area. 👍

Went for a family meal on Mothers Day. The place was a lovely restaurant and very busy. There was excellent customer service and great portions. Unfortunately, the starter and main food was only just warm and the Pork and Beef were not very tender, the two other meals of Roast Chicken Breast were tasty but again only just warm. All desserts were very nice. The disable toilet had no soap in the dispenser and there was no hand drying facility. On the second visit to the toilet nothing had been done despite having reported it previously. Will we be back ? - I'm not sure.

This is not the place you will discover by chance. I thought I knew the area well, but a friend told me about it, for which I'm grateful. Outside gives few clues to it's former use, besides the road name. Old mid century railway station. Interior is a little stark and I would have liked to see a theme, perhaps railway related? Perhaps blown up b+w pics or wall coverings harking back to its past. Colourised railway pics would be great too. Online table reservation relatively easy. Service was perfect . THE FOOD. Every dish was fantastic, every mouthful a delight. Even simple sounding dishes were perfect. The a la carte menu was quite long, making me think it would be a nightmare to have all fresh produce. However, I picked the scallops, black pudding and samphire starter and the taste and textures were divine. Sides offered with the beef stroganoff ( from the set menu) were unnecessary and should have been Indian in origin. Presentation, taste and quality of every dish was next level. The food overall was exceptional and clearly shows the difference between having a chef and his team and using a cook. Of course this is reflected in the price, which to me seemed reasonable and worth every penny. Didn't have any desserts as we could only take so much excitement in one sitting. That will be next time, plus I want to sit in the dining carriage which I only discovered as I was leaving.

Stayed there last night as we had attended a wake there earlier in the day. Staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful. Had a nice light evening meal in the bar area restaurant, Rooms were nice and very clean and comfortable. Only downside was the springy floorboards, you can hear people walking back and forth in the room above, luckily I had earplugs which . Breakfast was also good value.
