The Old Bakehouse in Kettering

The room you sit in is vile in terms of decor and filthy. The cutlery was filthy and I had to ask for it to be changed but it was just wet and wiped as I could see it being done. The waitress was quite sweet but had no idea how to do her job and was very embarrassed to have to keep telling us items were not on the menu both for food and drink. About ten things we asked for were off. One couple left as there was so little available. Took over two hours for us to get our main course despite the fact there were only 6 people in the restaurant including our table of 4. The fillet steak and chips was almost £33 as you had to pay an extra £2.25 for the sauce. Same price as a posh restaurant in Central London. I suspect the person doing the cooking was actually downstairs drinking in the outdoor music bar along with the waitress, unless they had to go and catch the cow. After we got our drinks at the beginning we were abandoned. Overall a skin crawling experience. Never go there! Zero star experience.

Of all the courses on the menus, there were only four options available. It became a joke when asking for a dish on the menu to be told sorry it is not availble. when trying to order drinks the majority on the menu are not available. The food was average, the Potato wedges where supposed to be crispy came delivered as soggy. No one came to check if the food was alright, to ask if we wanted more drinks. there was no care shown to us as customers. On leaving, you have to go and find the waitress to provide you with a bill to pay. Only to find that the card machine isn’t working. Than be told to go across the street draw cash and come back. All in all once in a life time experience, never to be repeated again.

Our experience here was so bad it was almost funny - or would have been if we hadn’t had to pay £50 a head for a terrible night! Extremely limited selection - only four mains available and none of them veggie, no Diet Coke, no orange juice. We had to wait over an hour for our starters, which were ok. The mains however were really disappointing and spectacularly overpriced. My ‘lamb kofta’ was a poor quality, dry and flavourless meatball - and it cost £20! The cocktails and wine were also poor. Service was surly and rude - they overcharged us but apparently didn’t have the authority to change the bill! To top everything off, they waited until the very end to tell us that their card machine was broken so we’d need to pay cash. When we tried to explain our other issues to the waitress she said it’s because they had three (!) other tables that night. I appreciate that Covid has impacted the industry, but four tables in an large restaurant doesn’t seem too much to cope with - we would have come at an alternative time if advised when we booked! Throughout the night, the outside bar area was blasting music really loudly - so loudly that someone from the council arrived to tell them to turn it down. Honestly couldn’t make it up! It’s a shame, previously this restaurant came highly recommended but it’s gone significantly down hill and I won’t be returning.

I remember this being a fantastic restaurant when I visited many years ago. But it certainly isn’t anymore. We were given one menu between six of us and were told the waitress would bring more. She didn’t. On a menu of about 25 mains, there were only four options available, none vegetarian. They told us this only after coming to take our order, not when they gave us the menu 30 minutes earlier. They didn’t have most of the drink choices we ordered. The starters took an hour to arrive. Main courses cost upwards of £18 and the food was average at best. They overcharged us for sauce when the menu clearly stated the steak came with sauce. When we complained, they didn’t want to know. The card machine wasn’t working so we had to leave to get cash and come back. When we raised all of our complaints (only because the final straw was being overcharged), the waitress got defensive and said it was because they had five bookings all at the same time. There were only five tables taken in the whole restaurant. We asked for a manager and we were told the only staff were her and another waitress. In all, a terrible experience. Mediocre food, overpriced and absolutely abysmal customer service.

The worst dining experience in recent memory. There were a grand total of four mains available, from the whole menu, and no vegetarian options. We waited over an hour for starters to arrive. Three cocktails available, no diet coke and no orange juice. One menu to share between six of us. Such loud music that when we went downstairs there was someone from Kettering Council investigating. One surly waitress and one who got more miserable as the night went on. The steak was OK which is the best thing I can say about the whole experience. Everyone else's dinner was substandard. Expensive, awful meal.

We have ordered a few times from here for delivery and we live in a different town and each time the food has arrived hot, well presented and tasty. Would definitely recommend and continue to use.

Had a mixed box from them last night. Very disappointed, chicken skewers were burnt, overcooked and dry. The box everything came in guaranteed the food was not hot when it got to us. Their idea of a greek salad doesn't meet anything I've had before, village salad perhaps and it didn't help that it was in with the "hot" food so the salad was warm. The only saving face was that the grilled chorizo was good after it had been warmed up. Oh, and the garlic bread missed out on the garlic..

Great service and value for money . Beef was obviously cut from joint with a scrumptious assortment of vegetables including three types of potatoes. If you feel like a day away from the kitchen then look no furthe. Thank you

Appalling on every count. Arrived to find someone vomiting outside the front of the restaurant. Entered, and willing to bear with Covid-related menus and service BUT: table filthy and had to ask for it to be scrubbed of sticky leftovers, cutlery had embedded food on it, glasses were filthy. No bottles of wine on the menu. When we asked we were told that wine was available but the waiter had no idea what it was. We were told all items on the menu were available. I ordered the moussaka only to be told it was now not available. Ordered something else. Waited ONE HOUR when only 1 other table occupied. Has to ask staff to check on food. It arrived. Chips not even cooked! We left and will not be back.

We gave the Bakehouse a go this evening for our anniversary, after reading the reviews over the past few weeks we were a little apprehensive but there was no need. We had a lovely meal and had amazing service from Chris. Thank for a fabulous time.

we have been coming here for years and by far the worst meal we have ever had. the meze didn't have everything described and the quality of the items you did get was horrendous. the mains were even worse. chicken souvlaki was dry...its not difficult to cook chicken really is it? the steak deal we got sounded really good value until you actually saw the steak the steaks themselves were tiny and both ordered medium both came cooked well past well done! the chips to accompany them were the other end of spectrum as they were under cooked which is dissapointing as a child can cook chips. the paella was by far the worst main out of the 4...the paella was so dry it just looked like a bed of rice topped with overcooked chicken and chorizo with a tiny bit of tomato relish splattered on and was completely in edible. the poor girl serving was left to deal with all of this rather than a manager. I never normally leave bad reviews for anywhere but honestly its the worst meal we have ever had. we have loved this place for years and always gone back but the new chef is horrendous and the fact the prices have gone up yet the quality of food and cooking quality has gone down is disgusting. we won't be going back. if you have ever been to the old bake House before you would agree with me that you let the piss poor service slide because of the food quality. well now that has gone to, so you get horrendous service waiting an hour for your food to arrive and it arrives in edible.

We arrive for a steak night on Thursday, at the time they were only 4 tables and 2 people serving. We ordered steaks and paid £3 more for an upgrade to fillet steak, 2 glasses of wine, the white one was delivered in a very dirty glass with pieces of food, it got changed in a not so clean hot wine glass,an glasses for water that were chipped then steaks were delivered, tasted great, pepper sauce was delicious,salad and chips really nice. How ever, no steak knives given, we struggle to cut the steaks, no sauces or more drinks offered even when our glasses were empty. After a while we managed to order another drink which they didn't have and we got offered a cider that you can buy in aldi or lidl for £3 for 6, a can was put on the table with no glass, we finished our food and then we wanted something sweet which we again have to wait really long time to order, after a while after ordering they forgot our dessert. To be honest we reached the stage of being angry to a big disappointment and we just laughed at the end. It's a shame because some other customers noticed what happened to us and the other tables and said "food in here is amazing but they don't know how to run a restaurant "

Waited nearly 2 hours on Saturday night for average food which certainly does not justify the price tag. Waiter was very nice and felt sorry for all the waiting staff dealing with constant complaints from all there. We were offered free drinks but as the party were on soft drinks it was not really compensation to no food. Same experience of no QR code working and no hand sanitiser available on entry and only when other tables had left (some before food having given up hope) we discovered some on a neighbouring table. Had to eat in my coat as it was so cold with the door open for people going up and down to The Gin Palace. Placemats are really old and looking past their best and not particularly sanitary in the current climate. Same for the menus in stark contrast to other places visited recently who use disposable ones. One of the meals was adequate but the other had hard vegetables and the food was served so late that appetites were largely lost. All round a terrible dining experience and will never visit again.

Our visit to the Old Bakehouse last night consisted of a series of let-downs which, combined, made us wonder if Basil Fawlty was in charge. First up, when checking in using the Covid-19 Track and Trace QR code, we all got an ‘invalid code’ message on our phones. None of the codes in the restaurant or the Gin Palace worked but we shrugged this off as unfortunate at the time, rather than a deliberate avoidance of any Covid tracing. In hindsight, we have been left wondering if the code was deliberately faulty. So, into the Gin Palace for cocktails. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn’t have minded the loud music, but we were pretty sure the volume was breaking covid laws. We also passed quite a crowd of people in the courtyard with no sign of any social distancing. Cocktails arrived. They all looked amateurish and tasted even worse. The waiter proudly explained that this was the first time he’d ever made cocktails. After taking one sip, we really wished we hadn’t been his Guinea pigs. My Hugo cocktail was supposed to include elderflower cordial and Prosecco, topped with soda and fresh mint leaves. It could more accurately be described as a few mint leaves covered in flat soda water. The elderflower cordial and Prosecco were barely there. We then ventured into the Bakehouse for our meal. A favourite starter, the Spanakopita parcels, was not available. They had run out at lunchtime apparently. No time to make any more? Three of us ordered the ‘balls of melting mozzarella’ and two of us ordered the calamari. We then ordered one bottle of red and one bottle of white wine. The wine arrived promptly but unfortunately they had ‘run out of wine glasses’ and so we were given balloon gin glasses from which to drink it. Half an hour or so later we were presented with something that looked like meatballs (possibly the Spetsofai Greek sausage dish – which we didn’t order) and one of the calamari dishes. The calamari looking slightly anaemic. Shortly afterwards, the other calamari starter arrived looking much the same as the first. We then waited approximately 10 minutes for the waiter to return, with the unfortunate job of having to tell us that there was only one portion of mozzarella balls left. Three of us were therefore asked to share three mozzarella balls. The ‘melting mozzarella’ was lukewarm and considerably way off melting. We did point out to the waiter that the food didn’t seem to be cooked and we were therefore not going to eat it. The poor waiter, who was running up and down the stairs all night, wearing his face mask, looked and sounded like he was going to have a panic attack. We advised him to go and get some fresh air. It was at this point (around 8.30pm) that we got talking to the table next to us who were still waiting for their food, despite having booked their table for 7pm. We decided to call the manager to point out this series of disappointments. The manager turned out to be the doorman who had greeted us at the beginning of the evening and encouraged us to check-in using the invalid QR code. He was very apologetic but wanted to blame his waiting staff for everything that was going wrong. For us, it was very much the fault of the management and chef who were clearly incapable of ordering the correct amount of food for a Saturday night and equally incapable of cooking it. We decided to call our taxi to see if we could be collected early which, thankfully, we could. We notified a waitress that we would like to cancel our main course order and would be leaving. 5 minutes later a different waitress informed us that the manger was incredibly sorry and that he’d like to offer us a free bottle of prosecco if we stayed. Too little too late for us. We couldn’t get out of there quickly enough. We paid for the wine (which was poor) but refused to pay for anything else. This is all such a shame, not least because this restaurant used to be so good! We had all been looking forward to this evening for so long and the series of let-downs made it a memorable night for all the wrong reasons.
