Nice pub. The outside seating is close to the road and the point of entry from the car park, so always people walking in between the seats. The food was ok for a quick Saturday lunch.

Tonight's meal was excellent. Music was quite loud, but we enjoyed a pleasant meal out.

We recently booked The Oak for my son’s Christening and we couldn’t have picked a better place to have it! We comfortably had around 50 guests. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and even left the pool table on free of charge as a bonus! Would 100% hire again😌

Food cold. Basic and overpriced for what it was.. Curry was like slop. Sent Mt food back, and it was warmed up. In the meantime, my hubby had eaten his. Waitress was lovely and understanding. But no composition offered.

Came for tea with daughter and granddaughter I had the steak daughter has the chicken burger kids pizza and nuggets very nice will definitely call in again if around houghton again 10/10 the burger compliments to the chief ☺️

Decided we couldn't be bothered cooking and came out for tea. This is cheaper than the other local pubs for food and was better than the Boars Head we'd visited the night before, as well as much cheaper. Service was a bit slow originally but it was busy and everyone was polite and did all they could do. Starters were pretty standard but the burgers we had for our mains were genuinely some of the nicest we've had and the chef was very helpful and polite. I'd definitely recommend for some genuine pub grub at reasonable pricing. My dog got lots of treats and attention despite parking herself in the way.

I don’t like to give poor reviews but sadly feel I need to on this occasion. Went here for lunch on Good Friday. It was packed. We were warned that there was a 45 minutes to an hour wait for food but after over an hour we were told it would now be another 15 minutes. After 15 minutes he came and asked what our order was then said it was just being started! When it finally came after an hour and a half the food and plates were almost cold, the advertised Yorkshire pudding was missing and the jug of gravy was tiny for the sausages and mash. The £13 burger came with a small handful of chips whilst the £9 burger had the same amount. They did keep apologising and gave us a free round of drinks but the whole experience was extremely underwhelming and I don’t think I’d go again. They were polite enough but obviously over faced!

Service was extremely slow, took an hour to get the starter, food was good.

Really nice atmosphere. Called in whilst delivering into the local area and waiting to be picked up. Ash, I think she is the manageress , was a really friendly person and seemed pleasant and attentive. Nice pint of Guinness. Good place . Customers were nice and friendly.

Food tasted like it was reheated from at least the day before. The pub looks scruffy inside with boxes and bits all over. Slow service.

Went with 15 people for a Christmas meal. I wasn't expecting much as this kind of thing can be rushed. The meal was gorgeous. I had the turkey. It was a lovely meal. Seemed really good quality. The deep fried kale was so tasty!!! My friend had a crumble for afters which I had a bit of. Again so tasty and good quality! I'd definitely go again. Thank you to the team for being so accommodating when I had to keep ringing up adding people and changing orders etc. We had a great time thank you :)

Really enjoyed my night at the Oak last night!!

It was our first time visiting The Oak and it certainly won't be the last. We felt such a lovely and relaxed atmosphere as soon as we walked in. Food was tasty and arrived with us quickly but the service topped it off for us. It's not often you feel so welcome from pub staff & owners, this place is just good vibes around, a clean, loved and cared for space, we would recommended!!

Food was fine for the price, standard chain pub grub from the freezer. Large group of us so expected to be some delay. Took order without making note and OBVIOUSLY dishes arrived that no one had ordered and someone eventually had to take another order and actually WRITE IT DOWN. Why risk remembering 16 peoples orders, it’s not going to impress anyone

Ordered chicken tikka curry, got a bowl of sauce just 6 pieces of chicken looked like they had been pulled fron a wing, onion bargie still frozen, rice hard, naan microwaved and hard NOT IMPRESSED £60 for a very poor meal, my friend got a mixed grill, 1 sausage, no lamb chop all deep fried WHY

On multiple occasions the younger staff never seem friendly or welcoming here, really glum looks on their faces. I get that it's not a glamorous job but put on some sort of act at least. The food is basic and bland here, nothing really stands out and I only recommend it if you're desperate to eat and have no other option. The drinks are nearly double the price of pubs nearby, walk a mile there instead and have a better experience.

A dog friendly pub with decent beer and nice, friendly staff. Enjoyed a relaxed couple of pints after a long walk and found it very pleasant.

First, and not my last visit... The young lady behind the bar (Monday 5th June) was spot on, answered all my questions as a new visitor with a smile... 🙂 Had the veggie burger, very good, onion ring side (great too have them not dripping in oil and crunchy batter )... Spot on pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord... Only moan is that I had no change and wanted too leave a tip on card, nope, brewertly/owners don't allow it, I felt bad, but will make up for it on next visit... 🙂

First ever visit on Sunday and what a great place this is. Dog friendly too. As soon as we sat down the barman fetched a bowl of water for our dog. Good choice of food on the menu. Partner had the vegetarian option of Battered Halloumi , me opting for the steak with peppercorn sauce. Have to say that the batter on the Halloumi and Onion Rings was the lightest, crispiest batter ever! The food was delicious. Nice atmosphere and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back.

Called in Saturday 20/05/23 I had the mixed grill my wife had the Lasagna. I had 1 sausage, 1 egg, 1 small piece of gammon, 1 chicken wing ( on the menu it has a S on the end, 2 pieces of steak the size of your thumb & fries peas. The onion rings & grilled tomatoe are now extras on this new menu £16.95 The lasagna very minute salad, garlic bread extra fries extra. 😱😱🤔 £12.50 with extras £15.50 Also the drinks are expensive compared to other pubs in the area.’

A large pub with separate restaurant area. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the lunch menu was excellent and very reasonablt priced. We will be back to try the dinner menu very soon.

I went in with my family for a Sunday roast last week and it was incredible! The presentation of the beef dinner was amazing and it tasted just as good!! The 3 young ladies that were working were very welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be back again :)

Food was a let down. Ordered wife's steak to have no red on the middle. First one came out with blood still in middle. Sent it back. Had to wait as they cooked her a whole new meal but by the time hers came out me and our 2 children had finished our meals and wife cut into steak again and it was red again. They didn't charge me for the steak but would of rather had the meal we ordered so we could of all eaten together. Wife had to go to chippy on way home. We won't be going back again

If the above floats your boat then you'll love it here. But don't take our word for it. Read one of our recent reviews! Unacceptable. My family and I visited on Tuesday at 18:40 and were asked by the bartender (who was polite and helpful) if we wouldn't mind sitting inside if we wanted food, as he was the only one working the bar. We were happy to do so. We ordered our meal at 19.00 and were told that there was only one person working the kitchen, but they would have our meal ready as soon as they could. The restaurant area of the pub wasn't too busy and we didn't mind waiting a little longer, so we waited... and waited... and waited. After an hour and forty five minutes and our mains nowhere to be seen we had to give up. My youngest had primary school in the morning. We were offered a discount on the drinks. I refused and instead told them that I won't be paying for the starters. We left, went to the local shop and all ate prepacked sandwiches. A ruined evening. Can't wait to see you at the Oak!

Lovely pub, well decorated with great outdoor seating area. Pub has come under new ownership recently, prices have increased however quality of food is not the best - I feel the food is overpriced for what it is.

Great pub just what we were looking for, a short walk from Red Rocks Caravan Park. A good selection of beers and lagers. The food menu looked good and people who were dining clearly were regulars, always a good sign can't comment as we didn't dine. Service was excellent warlm welcome from the young man behind the bar.

Had lunch watching the football a few Saturdays ago and the food was very good particularly the garlic bread was unbelievable. Great service as always

Great owner and staff. We come every week after going to the brilliant Baby Cherubs baby group for delicious food and great coffee. They cater to babies and young children by providing toys and a safe area for them. We can't recommend it enough!

We made a last minute decision to eat out on the evening of Mother’s Day. What a lucky choice we made ! Although extremely busy a table was found and we enjoyed three excellent meals. From the moment we walked in we were impressed by the cheerful and friendly staff, in particular Megan, our hostess and server. She was delightful and oozed efficiency and hospitality. Our food was well presented, served hot, and was delicious. We noted a really happy and friendly buzz about the place and commented that we intend to pay a return visit. (The 5 star food hygiene rating is a reassuring bonus) Overall we consider this an excellent place for a no frills good quality pub meal. I intend to mention it to friends and I’m confident that they will not be disappointed.

Popped in today for lunch. Haven't been in for a while. Has a lovely homely feel to the place now. The lovely waitress was very attentive and friendly. We had Sunday lunch with lamb and all I can say is wow !! It was absolutely fantastic. Really well presented and the taste was scrumptious. My daughter had the dirty fries with chicken and some garlic bread. She is miss fussy and she said it was the best chicken she has had ! Really enjoyed the food and will definitely be back. Well done to the new manager and chef.

Food was brilliant and the staff are extremely friendly. It had been very busy during the day and had apparently been understaffed however this didn't affect the quality of the food, service or cleanliness of the place. Highly recommended and will be coming back regularly

Amazing food, great atmosphere and friendly staff, definitely worth a visit.

Nice local pub, only one real ale on the the pumps but it was Sunday night and nice keg session IPA available. Restaurant area was comfortable and welcoming and kid friendly including the provision of connect 4 and guess who for us to play whilst waiting. Food is the usual pub grub selection of burgers, classics and the Sunday roast of course. Service took a while but it was definitely worth it, large quality portions of well prepared fresh food. The kids fish goujons were huge and looked home made, the roasts looked fab including a big Yorkshire pud and sprinkled with crispy parsnip shavings. Adult burgers were similarly filling and tasty. Deserts were sufficiently sweet and rich to round off a really enjoyable and fabulously well priced meal. I think we may be back.

Nice food, but the chicken tikka marsala, is like a weight watchers portion, tiny, pudding was nice, but custard, even with an extra one, was small, the pub is lovely and the food quality was good. I personally would cook curries myself rather than buy in portions.

This pub has in the past had some chequered history...but be under no doubt under the current management it will become a very popular meeting hub in our community. The greeting we where given by mine host made us very relaxed. We both had the Sunday Roast. Wow! We have never eaten a more rich and well presented platter. The quality of the food was exceptional and service impecable....I hope people may see this review and give The Oak a try.....can't wait to go back..I wish the Management the very best of luck..it would be well deserved.

Visited yesterday great Sunday dinner and brass band for Christmas lights

Went yesterday, shared a starter as not sure on portion sizes. Mains came and was disappointed with such small salad, chips slightly under cooked. But it was OK, prices average I'd say, had better, but had worse. Note to waitress maybe tie your hair up when serving food!!!

Good pub with sport on the TV. Can be a bit quiet but there is always seating inside and out. Decent car park at the back.

called in for a meal last saturday, a group of young people with a dog that was performing tricks and causing disruption to other diners,swearing and nasty , no sign of anyone in charge just a young girl behind the bar , has anyone ever seen the landlord , no one seemed to know, we will not be returning

Shocking tiny portion. Food didn't taste of anything! Mash was more like smash! Came out on a huge plate didnt even fill half the plate ! I'll let the picture speak for it self !

The food, service and atmosphere in The Oak while watching the football was brilliant. Well organised with table service we wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

Shocking , embarrassing service wouldnt recomend what so ever

Service was terrible and some of the staff very rude. Waited over 2hrs for food and when they brought the food out it was in 10min intervals with some of the plates not complete and brought out the rest of it 10min later and by this time the rest food was cold. When trying to discuss this with the staff member, they kept saying what are you trying to say and what more do you want!! Disgusting attitude/service all round and would highly recommend not visiting this place.

Stopped in after a lovely walk in Houghton- the pub wasn’t busy plenty of seating inside and out- we were a group of 3 adults and 4 children. Food order came after 80 mins of waiting after some issue with a printer, the food came out slowly, eventually! with incomplete plates and in dribs and drabs. When a complaint was made I was told it’s cause we were a large party! 3 people had soup!! So not exactly difficult to time with a burger some fried chicken and a steak. (Was asked for medium rare but came well done) we had to ask for cutlery, condiments and the missing meal parts. It’s such a shame as the food we received was tasty albeit very late and starting to go cold whilst waiting for the table to be served in it’s entirety. We certainly won’t be returning!! After asking for the manager we had to wait for him as he was in the kitchen, clearly more staff are needed and ones that don’t roll their eyes at you would be beneficial.

We thought we would try eating here for the first time in a while. Both of our meals served only warm. The chicken burger just came with chips. No salad, coleslaw, dipping sauce or anything. Looked rather dull. Will probably just return for drinks when we can as the pub is nice inside and has large TV screens for live sport. Choice of draft lager not the greatest either. The mixed fruit crumble desert was virtually inedible. Poor choice of soggy fruit and raisins just topped with loose oats basically. Not really the fruit crumble I was expecting. Hopefully the food will get better soon!
