Very underwhelming experience. We have dined in several Michelin star restaurants around the world and love a good experience. This restaurant was a great disappointment. We had the evening menu, which appears to be dishes from the menu but to share and therefore double the price, other tables had ordered regular meals and they appeared to be the same size as the one we had to share. Secondly the food was just not great. Very normal, nothing extraordinary or special in any kind of way, rather boring and bland. Also the service was unable to speak proper English therefore the communication was difficult. The wine had to be self-served, the bottle was left at the table, no-one checked on us to refill our glasses. When we spoke up regarding missing fish cutlery, we got a rude answer from the waiter that he can cut it perfectly fine and would do it for us if we struggled 😳. No explanation on the dishes was given, just placed in front of us. Also the restaurants atmosphere is not great, it is very busy as the kitchen is on the upper floor and you can see and hear the waiters running up and down the hallway. The bar in the upper floor is operated in a loudly manner. When we asked to waive the service charge, our waitress was not able to understand the ask herself and called the manager who discussed the situation, so a bad meal with bad service was followed by a socially awkward conversation. We would have expected a price reduction at the very least. Would not recommend, genuinely don’t understand how they managed to get a Michelin Star.

The scallops are soft, glutinous and sweet. The beef cheek is stewed very crispy and the tendons are chewy. The shrimp dumplings are like being filled with soup, and the overall taste is very delicious. The mutton is very tender, juicy, fragrant but not sour.

Excellent lunch and at £38 for a three course an amazing value as well. The set menu offers good choices and all dishes were superb. The service was very professional. There is a free corkage on Mondays which meant an even more amazing value.

Good experience overall but I expected more from the price and a Michelin star. The bread and butter was good but pretty basic. Crab and seaweed tartlets were too salty to me. The cured scallops were amazing! Probably the best dish of the set. The truffle spaghetti was delicious, I would love it to be a bit more creamy but still it was great. The Dover Sole was just okay to my taste and nothing more. Iberico Pork Pluma was great - very tender and rich in flavour although the sauce was too salty. The Pain Perdu dessert felt too simple but it was delicious to me. The wine pairing was okay and I expected more. Maybe roughly two wines were really good and interesting. The service was fine overall but they did not even take our jackets. I don’t think I would be back unfortunately

Visited here upon the recommendation of Which?, suggesting you can eat Michelin star food on a (relative) budget for £38 for 3 courses. In short, Ninth didn’t disappoint on food. We had the beef tagliatelle and ricotta salad starter, the guinea foul main and the rice pudding brûlée and Pain Perdu desserts. The starters were good but the mains and deserts were amazing - the rice pudding brûlée was one of the best desserts I’ve had ages. Utterly scrumptious. The claim of £76 total for lunch tuned out to be £100 more which comprised of water, sourdough bread, two sides and a bottle of Rose. An issue with the champagne flutes was dealt with professionally, quickly and adequately. The restaurant is quite small and intimate and we had a couple of noisy babies eating eat us and although it didn’t affect the dinner, don’t expect a quiet, romantic dinner for two here. Overall though, well worth the money.

Absolutely does what one would expect of a restaurant of this style, location and reputation. An excellent celebratory lunch. Limited but adequate menu of mixed Mediterranean meals all fresh and very tasty. Really good staff who understand the dishes and are flexible with regard to gluten free requirement. Side dishes notably pricey though - an odd aberration. Big price, small portion but only for these side dishes. Of course I shall come again

The Ninth is an absolute gem! We came with a reservation, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our meal. We opted for the à la carte menu, and every dish was perfect for sharing and bursting with flavor. The raviolo was a standout—rich, flavorful, and simply delicious. The lamb was also exceptional, tender and juicy with every bite. Every dish we tried was executed beautifully, making it a truly memorable dining experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fantastic meal in a welcoming atmosphere!

Great/delicious food and nicely plated. We had sharing plates which is quite new and we did leave full so no complaints there. The pain perdu was my favourite dish! I highly recommend that and it did not taste like any other french toast....it was beautifully crisp on the outside but the brioche was so soft and airy on the inside with a lovely tonka bean ice cream to be paired with.

I visited with a lunch reservation for one person. There were more seats than I expected, but I still think it's better to make a reservation. I took off one star for the atmosphere because there was a group of guests and it was very noisy, but the food and service were impeccable. Desserts in particular seemed to be their signature. I thought it was just because the person working at the bar was very busy, but he later apologized for not paying attention to me and said he would definitely pay attention to me the next time I came for dinner, which was quite impressive. I'll have to go back for dinner later. Ragu sauce is not the minced ragu sauce we think of. Normally, I only eat meat as a main dish, but I like the pickled shallots in this main dish, so I prefer to eat it with puree. The dessert was explained at great length, saying that they paid special attention to the bread, but for Koreans' tastes, it tastes like crispy and fluffy hotteok. It goes well with ice cream.

For seafood lovers, the Grilled Dover Sole with Seaweed Butter and Kale is perfectly executed, showcasing the kitchen’s precision and technique. A Monday night visit for the first time. We chose the chef's menu (one meat and one pesc) which was amazing - sourdough, crab tartlets, spaghetti with truffle, sole, ibérico pork and the pain perdu were all stunning. We absolutely loved everything on the menu. Opted for a separate bottle of Californian pinot noir as opposed to the wine pairing which was also really nice. Service was excellent and a nice touch with the extra birthday treat dessert for my partner after I'd let them know in advance of that. We'll absolutely be visiting again in future!

Good experience for a birthday dinner. While the food and drinks were very good, the service is spotty, definitely surprising considering they have a Michelin star and our experience of Michelin-starred restaurant implies an exceptional service. We were at a nice table upstairs but close to the small bar area where they would loudly dump cutlery and dishes into trays and we’d hear one supervisor reprimanding a younger one…

Lunch visit arranged to The Ninth by a very good business friend to celebrate (yet again) my 80th birthday. Small but comfortably furnished restaurant on Charlotte Street with warm welcome from happy, smiling staff. Chef/proprietor Jun Tanaka has an impressive CV from 30 years in London working for some of the best chefs. Opened The Ninth in 2015 and gained a Michelin star two years later which his quality cooking still merits. My host steered me to the unbelievable value Set Menu at £35 for 2 courses or £38 for 3 courses. He quickly ordered the sourdough and butter which met all my requirements for a proper restaurant – warm fresh crusty edge bread with divine soft and salty butter. This is my first test which so many larger more pretentious establishments fail. After this treat, I opted to start with Winter tomatoes, Blood Orange, Fennel and Ajo blanco. Wonderful mix of textures and flavours but the presentation was a little chaotic and not easy to eat with my usual elegance. The main course which we both chose was sensational. Roasted guinea fowl. Cavolo nero, hazelnut pesto and glazed shallots. Breast meat tender, moist and full of slightly gamey flavour, the cabbage and shallots added textures with the pesto offering another subtle flavour. The side of crispy agria potatoes with tomato aioli was a revelation. The Maitre d’ brought Jun for the kitchen to meet us and he signed my menu. Lovely to chat to the great man as we explored his prep and cooking method for the potatoes. No room for dessert so we closed with coffee. Wonderful experience. Now on my radar and will return as soon as possible.

The food at The Ninth is good full stop. I would recommend the egg yolk ravioli and the crab and seaweed tartlets. However, the service, ambiance and attitude of the staff towards my partner and I ruined our experience. Throughout the savoury portion of our meal, we were rushed between courses, to the point we felt hurried to eat. In complete contrast, we then were made to wait 8 minutes to order our dessert - and I would understand this if more than 2 options were available on the menu. After finally ordering, the dessert took 25 minutes to come, to our complete surprise, due to such a contrast with the prior zealousness of the one waitress, who seemed to be working the entire floor. We then asked for the bill which took another 10 minutes to come. As I am sure you can understand, we rightfully asked to remove the hefty £18 service charge from our meal, as we had been made to wait too long in our opinion. Please not we were being charged by a different server who had not been our waiter this particular evening. This following interaction was very uncomfortable. Upon asking to remove said charge, he asked why, as you would expect. My partner reasoned that the service towards the end of our meal was slow, to which his reaction was aggressive, sharp and unnecessary. Quote on quote: " well the dessert takes 15 minutes to bake, that's why it's slow." "Im happy to take it [service charge], I just need to know the reason." If the dessert takes 15 minutes to make, it should be stated on the menu. Secondly, to the owners of the establishment, a server has every right to ask about their work, to better themselves and the restaurant, but they have no right to question, accuse and challenge the reasoning of the guest. It is inappropriate and leaves an ironic bitter taste in the mouth of the customer.

I dined at The Ninth on Valentine’s Day, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. First, we waited 45 minutes for our cocktails, which was completely unacceptable. When the food finally arrived, it was underwhelming. The portions were small, especially considering the high prices, and the food was served lukewarm. To make matters worse, the restaurant was clearly understaffed — the service was inattentive and slow. The food itself was very average. Honestly, the entire experience felt like it wasn’t worth the money at all. I expected much more from a place with such a reputation. I won't be returning.

We had the lunch set menu which is very good value. The starter beef ragu tagliatelle was average- good portion size but the pasta was a tad overcooked, the sage was quite nice though. The mains were good especially the duck confit. The dessert was really delicious and I highly recommend the pain perdu. However I think the restaurant might be a little short-staffed as we had 2 ladies managing all the tables on the ground floor when we dined. They definitely did their best but it'll be good if they had some extra help.

ATMOSPHERE Very welcoming with a rustic neighbourhood feeling, not trying to impress just feel cosy. CUISINE We opted for taster with wine (always our goto) and were very impressed. Wonderful fusion of the both chefs background from Japan and Italy peeking into each dish. Spot on with texture, temperature and taste also. Enjoyed the sharing/family style plating. I was a bit disappointed considering this is a Michelin starred restaurant. Went for the three course dinner. Had a booking for 6, arrived ten minutes early and they wouldn’t open the doors to let any of the diners in so we had to wait in the cold and then queue to be sat down until after 6. Why not start bookings from 6.15 instead? We had winter tomato salad and ragu spaghetti for start which were both nice. Mains were guinea foul and hake - both were fine but overly salted and no better than you’d get in a gastropub. Desserts were the best part with a rice pudding crème brûlée and french toast which were both lovely. However, toward the end of our meal the restaurant got more busy and the staff were unable to keep up - we found ourselves totally ignored for over 20 minutes. I noticed other tables with dirty plates left on them too. Overall, it was a nice meal but nothing special and definitely below expectations.

.. no llevar pantalones vaqueros azules.

Fantastic dining in Fitzrovia! A small restaurant with great low-lit atmosphere and exposed brick, creating a cosy, authentic and romantic vibe. The wine menu is extensive and the Stephen Vincent Chardonnay was one of my favourite wines that I’ve ever had! We had the chef’s tasting menu which was a selection of dishes, including a pasta, a fish dish and a meat dish - finished with the restaurant’s signature Pain Perdue. Every single dish was phenomenal with a great range of flavours and both French and Asian influences mixed in, which I loved. The truffle pasta was a standout for me - a dish done in many restaurants yet I feel like I’ve never had it this good before! I’d visit again immediately and would choose this place for a special occasion. I just have to deduct a star for service unfortunately - on arrival, despite having a booking, we were told that there was only bar seating available. No problem, we said - but could we please be moved when a table became available (we asked this twice). The hostess promised us we would be, but 3 dishes in we had still not been moved despite there being visibly empty tables. We then chased this and asked to be moved to one of the empty tables, and we were then moved. Ultimately this is a small detail, but I feel the hostess should have been more attentive to moving us - when enjoying a £100pp tasting menu at a Michelin starred restaurant, it is understandable that the guests ideally don’t want to have this at the bar and attention should be paid to facilitate this as soon as possible!

I unfortunately can’t recommend this restaurant. We went for the midday 3-course menu. There was nothing special about it. For starters we had the fish carpaccio and spaghetti, fish was nice, spaghetti had nothing special that you could not get anywhere else. For mains we had the gnocchi and pork shoulder. Half the pork serving was fat, and the meat was tough, had a nice flavour, but nothing making it special. Gnocchi was the best meal, they were toasted o. The outside and soft on the inside, very nice sauce. Dessert we had the French toast, very nice caramelisation and soft core. The disappointment comes from being a Michelin restaurant, the dishes did not seem elevated or innovative. Service was very kind and attentive.

The dishes we had were delicious. Up there with Michelin grade food. The pork dish in particular was as good as I’ve tasted that meat cooked. The problem here was the service. It was disinterested and unprofessional in so many small ways. The one big way was that we sat for twenty minutes before having our order taken. That should never happen. None of the staff are rude but everything they do falls short of top standard and often falls short of basic service levels. Their dress code of jeans and trainers is absolutely fine if you deliver elite service levels. If you provide poor service the dress code grates as it appears a reflection of shoddy, disinterested, unprofessional attitudes. A few small examples that all add up over the course of a meal: - waitress takes order but is looking away into the distance at other tables. Clearly paying no real attention. - waiter picks up dirty and discarded serviette and folds it up, then replaces it on the table in front of me with dirty stains showing. Is it that wild an idea to replace it with a fresh serviette? - waitress picking up my empty plates from the table whilst my partner is still eating her main course. - When bill is delivered and card placed down, the waitress looked at the table twice and then proceeded to pick up plates and cutlery to lay some other tables. This is at the end of the night so there were no customers expected. It was just to prepare the tables for the following day. She even came back, glanced at the bill again and then picked up glasses to finish preparing the other tables. These might seem small things but seriously this is Michelin starred food at a top price whilst the service is half arsed and they appear untrained. It really ruins the experience and does a disservice to the chefs.

The welcome was lukewarm, with no real interest in how I was doing. I wasn’t offered a drink before being asked about food, and there were no recommendations offered. This was a shame as a side with the main was really needed, and I would have ordered, had it been suggested. The crab tartlets were tasty, though I was surprised they were served hot, which made the tartlet case a bit soggy. The seabream carpaccio, however, was simply delicious. Used cutlery left on the table until the main came - not ideal, and had to ask for replacement. The pork shoulder was flavorful but tough to cut in places - a steak knife would have been useful. Some gristly bits were too much and had to be left. The grilled chanterelle mushrooms and pickled cobnuts were well-balanced, but there was no follow-up to check how the food was. I might have asked for a side if they had. The portion of meat was a bit too large. Less meat and another vegetable on the plate would have made it feel like a more well rounded dish. I was given a recommendation for dessert (after asking). This pud was pleasant and I enjoyed it. Offered coffee, however no alternative milks are available (I drink oat), so no thanks. While paying, no ask on how my meal was. I agree with other reviews to some extent, that while I’m not bothered so much about the dress code, the overall service here does seem to fall below par for a one star. Regardless if you’re here for the set lunch menu (which I was) or à la carte in the evening. Would I be back, highly doubtful. Would I recommend, not particularly.

Weekday evening meal on 16th October 2024. Fair food, ambience, and service, but lighting too dim to read the menu. Resorted to using the torch on my mobile phone. Nothing deserving of a Michelin star - surprised they have one! No wow factor at all for any aspect. Presentation of food was mediocre. Food prices are inflated, I suppose because of the one Michelin star rating. Waiters wear jeans, and two were wearing trainers. Not even smart casual. Customers were all more smartly dressed than waiters. Well below expectations overall, and wouldn't want to go back. Many no star restaurants perform better than this one. My rating is based on expectations for a star rated restaurant, hence the disappointingly low grade. Oh dear!

We took the chef's menu and every single item was wonderful. The dishes are flavourful and balanced, I can't think of one thing that was "just ok". We finished everything because it was too good to leave a single crumb... and had to roll home !

Birthday meal. Elegant and very tasty. Michelin star restaurant but not super expensive. I love everything about the place: fantastic food and drinks, attentive service, atmosphere and clean bathroom. Excellent choice for a nice occasion. I would recommend it for a casual meal too if you can afford it. I would like to come back.

This place truly surprised me in the best way possible! I ordered a toast that, honestly, was divine. Easily one of the best I’ve ever had in my life. The meat was incredibly tender, and every single ingredient tasted so fresh, you could tell with every bite. The waitresses were super attentive, always ready to guide you through the menu with a smile. Without a doubt, I'll be coming back!

Disappointing I had heard very good things about this restaurant and so brought several friends with me. Our service was very sweet but we seem to be forgotten compared to the table next to us which meant that we were only just getting our dessert at closing time. We all opted for the tasting menu, which I think is a poor decision. For a Michelin restaurant with a tasting menu, I would expect delicate, well presented, and complex dishes. Instead while everything was quite tasty, it was all served as small dishes meaning one had to serve oneself and it looked a mess on the plate. I am afraid it’s not a restaurant to which I will be returning.

Food is on the saltier side, not with a lot of layers. Lamb tastes very game-y and the sauce did not exactly compliment the meat. Most of the dishes have simple seasonings.

I was really looking forward to visit the place after seeing the menu online, but sadly when I arrived to the restaurant there was at least 5 different dishes, if the menu was the same of the one online I would have gone for the 10 courses menu but opted for the 8 instead, which felt like a gimmick anyways because they count the canapés, pre dessert and petit fours as a course, and the cheese course being a shortcut to avoid cooking an extra dish, so in the end I really got 5 courses and paid for 8, I think they do this with everyone. The canapés and the 3 savoury courses were great, but the pre dessert and dessert were really disappointing, not really creative and the dessert left me only with a taste of basil even after the petit fours and a bit of wine that I had left. The service was friendly but sloppy, the tablecloth was dirty and I noticed even before seating but didn’t want to make a fuss out of it. Then I’ve been asked for water twice and got even the wrong one 🤦🏻♂️ To order food was way quicker than ordering wine which took like 15 mins and they literally had 5 tables in the room, also the waiting between the courses was way too long, which means that either the front of house or the chefs are very slow. The wine list is embarrassing and as a sommelier myself seems like a set up to rip you off, there’s not a single bottle of wine under £90, also the wines by the glass they have a gap from like £25 to £40 to £125 which is insane, no half bottles either, and for my firsrt glass of wine they didn’t even offer me to taste it before, despite the wines I ordered were both a good value and the guy who served it was decent and had some knowledge. In all this I think it was the owner sitting next to my table with some friends and drinking wine instead of worrying about the mediocre service they give which is not worth of a Michelin star, probably they are just retaining it because they have it for long time and know the people of the guide. 190£ for just myself for that menu and 2 glasses of wine is absolutely not worth it and I won’t recommend anyone that has eye for details to go there. The room itself looks so old that saying that the place feel like is stuck in the 80’s is generous. Feels bad to leave a review like this, in first place because I work in the industry and I never like to talk bad about other places, and because the staff were friendly and offered me also a glass of white wine to go with my cheeses, but after what I spent I feel like it was absolutely outrageous for the food and wines and the only taste that stays in your mouth is bitter. Also for some very weird reasons after the review the owner tries to follow me from his private instagram account probably trying to write me something. He never moved from the table as he stated in the answer and he had about 2 bottles of wine while on duty. Manager apparently that doesn’t know what a salsa verde is made of, letting guests order anything and then go and amend the order which is very annoying, another lady nearly placed my water bottle on the butter plate and so on I can go ahead for 4 pages. This place is completely pitiful and the owner is the most embarrassing and unprofessional I ever seen in my life, drinking while working and also trying to contact people. Avoid at all cost, mediocrity masked for class, which they won’t have even if they will but.

It was a while since we had been to Mon Plaisir and we were pleased that we had returned. The staff seemed less French but the food was decidedly so and both aspects were very good, albeit we waited a little longer than expected for our main courses. We selected from the main menu and seasonal specials rather than the good value set menu, so it was quite an expensive lunch, especially with the very good house champagne at £17 a glass and glasses of wine at 13 or 14. Our mains ranged from 28 to 36. Overall, very good but quite pricey.
