The Nine Giants in Cardiff

Surprised at the previous poor reviews we found it warm and pleasant with very friendly staff and quick service, Sizzling chicken and chips and sirloin steak with beef dripping gravy and curly fries were very good, followed by Cadburys style sundae.

Tired pub needs a really good clean and overhaul. Food is not good, I had a gyros wrap which was supposed to be a flat bread but was a wrap . It was so chewy I gave up . My daughter had a burger with no cheese but came with cheese. She asked the rude waiter for burger sauce and he snapped back it’s in the burger. You would need a magnifying glass to find it . The bar staff are really good pity the waiter couldn’t learn from them .

Booked table for 2 for lunch. Friendly helpful staff, long-awaited for food, but well worth it. As in previous reviews the toilets are looking a bit sad, the toilets themselves are very clean but paint peeling on doors, floors and window sills dirty let's the lovely pub down

Just had their ribs, which were excellent and quite reasonably priced. Will return. The bar is generally understaffed, and it takes quite a long time to get served. No option to order online is available. December 2023 update: Online ordering is now available!

Awful food! Tikka masala tasted like a jar I use at home but without the tarting up! Poppadoms were microwaved and burnt not deep fried. Staff were very friendly though! But I will not be going back!

Such a lovely pub tucked away in Rhiwbina. The food was phenomenal and served quickly, despite them being fully booked. The bar staff were amazingly kind and welcoming too. Beer garden was massive and absolutely stunning too. Well worth a visit!

The food is excellent, but a smell either carpet, curtains or seating, could put people with a weak constitution off their food. The staff were all very good.

My youngest took me and my husband here this evening as it’s my birthday on Sunday and we are away, I haven’t been here in years and was very pleasantly surprised, Debbie was very welcoming and managed to get us a lovely table, what a lovely lady! The food was delicious and atmosphere was very good , we will definitely be back

Having been here once before in the summer, we had a really good experience, we were a big table and I remember the service and food being great. I was happy to come back as a last minute anniversary plan, unfortunately we had a totally different experience. There were very loud big tables in the restaurant and there was only one lady working behind the bar and clearing tables, where are the staff? She was friendly but explained there had been an hour backlog for food and that they wanted to close the kitchen at 8pm, this was at 7:59pm. She said she’d check with the kitchen and we ordered drinks, she said they were still doing food but would be a 45 minute wait. We ordered the nachos to start, underwhelming and dry, no soured cream! Or option to add that or guacamole, didn’t think they were worth £9. We then ordered 2 sizzling steaks which were nice, although didn’t come with the sizzling peppers, courgette and broccoli, just the onions and grilled tomato. Still really good for £11 for a sirloin. Unfortunately based on our experience this time, we won’t be back. A shame really cause I remembered it being really good the first time we came, maybe staffing issues? And because we came a bit later in the evening.

We visited as we had been emailed a voucher for 40% off mains, only trouble was we got 40% less food. It was a shocking experience from start to finish. There wasn't anyone to greet us on the way in so we decided to seat ourselves, and it was at this point that some obtuse female staff member appeared to tell us that we were stood in a reserved area and that we need to move. The area was not corndened off nor we're there reserved signs on the tables, so I then explained that I had reserved a table and her reply was , name?, what a charming individual she really was. This place is full of locals and regulars whom clearly are welcome, but everyone else is a nuisance, needless to say we won't be returning. The whole building is scruffy and unkempt and in need of demolition!

Debbie was one of the friendliest and most helpful bar staff ive met in a very long time . Nothing was too much trouble for her and she always had a very warm smile . Very impressed

2024 update 3 stars. Tables could be cleaner. Glass had lipstick on. Ordered on app this time. Food arrived 25 mins. Wasn't quite what we expected. (Chopped salad promised cucumber, ginger and pineapple dressing, crispy onions which were all missing). Nevertheless very small portion but was tasty. Loo's still not great. Seemed overrun as we entered and needed more staff. Wasn't clear who was staff and wasn't though. 2022 update Still 4 stars. Breakfast this time. Delicious but 45 minute wait which we didn't mind as food was lovely. Loo's not as fresh like last time. Excellent price. No WiFi so download the app before you go. 2018 Cheap, cheerful and variety menu. Had a friendly welcome tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Would have given 5 star but disabled facilities awkward and could be fresher. Will be back.

Friendly Welcome every time. First class service with a smile and always goes the extra mile.Always use this Sizzler when in this area. One of the best we’ve been to and we’ve been to a few from Swansea to Weston Super Mare but this comes out on top every time.

Fab place for a family meal , great space outside for kids to play football , and Debs the bar staff is fabulous, friendly, helpful, kids thought she was fab , very patient with our rowdy lot

No frills, just cheap and cheerful.

Popped in early evening for a reasonably priced meal with my family. Very busy at the time therefore quite a long wait. Food when it arrived was quite good for the price. Only downside was that there is no childrens playground area to keep the little ones amused during the wait.

The food was outstanding, steak was cooked to perfection (grandson loved it) and the sizzling tandoori chicken was so succulent and tasty and tender. Dessert s fabulous xxWill be back

Lovely venue…great grounds for the kids to run around and lovely staff but the food is shocking. Been 3 times now (not my choice) and every time the food has been dreadful, so not just down to a bad day; which can happen….no reflection on the lovely staff but something is not quite clicking with this place and it’s a shame. Sorry guys.

Was really surprised with this pub, been to so many chain pubs where the food is average at best. The food here was lovely, service was good and they had a really nice outside area for the kids. I left thinking, well worth the money, which is unusual these days!

We were welcomed by staff shown to our table and meal came promptly. Staff were busy it seemed they had an awful lot of customers to serve and not many of them to do that . Our meals were nice and staff were very helpful at all times

It's OK. We sat outside where there was a big beer garden, with trees and small grass area for football. Not overly pretty but not unattractive either. There are plenty of parasols and other shades. Staff were friendly and efficient, but it did take more than 20 minutes for our food to arrive. We had a mega mixed grill, chicken gyros and kids pizza. Mixed grill was medium rather than rare but tasted good. Gyros was not completely as Devon the menu. It was chicken donner rather than chunks and served with garlic sauce as opposed to tzatziki. Shame. But still tasty, just not what expected. Food was reasonably priced. Poor selection of wines and interesting ales/largers. We would stop here again if passing.

Just put popped in on a off chance after day in trampoline park food was amazing and staff very accommodating very varied menu at a great price with the football posts a great addition

I’m a regular at the nine giants but after today I won’t be returning. My mum and I were in the queue to order food. There was a long queue out the door as it was very busy but this wasn’t the issue. We were in the queue for almost 20 minutes and a ‘local’ pushed right to the front because he wanted another beer. A man behind me who was obviously a friend of this man told him to get in the queue. He replied that he’s not queuing to get his drink. When we got to the front to be served I informed them that this guy should of waited his turn like everyone else and it’s not right he be served knowing others are waiting while he can just push in and demand his drinks. The man was clearly drunk and was shrugging his shoulders at me and my mum. He told me not to have a go at the staff in which I replied that I didn’t I was merely informing her that everyone else had to queue and so should he. My young daughter then come up to me asking if everything was ok and he continued to make comments. It seems drunk ‘ locals’ come first in this place and can treat other customers as they wish in their drunken states. Would not advise bringing families here to eat. We decided we would go somewhere else and left. Very very poor from the nine giants.

Always made very welcome, food good & value for money. Only one gripe - decor needs an upgrade. We both had Classic mixed grill , always good food but last night was exceptionally good .

Quick and friendly service. Great atmosphere. My only criticism would be that I don't feel that there is enough of a vegetarian range.

It said 30 minute wait on food which was fair enough and when they let you know in advance you don't feel cross over having to wait. Food was excellent value for money and I am happy to return.

Best beer garden locally. Spacious, plenty of room for kids to play. Food what you would expect. Staff all friendly and willing. Enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in the sunshine 🌞

Fairly poor booked a table of 12 for daughters 15th birthday food didn’t come out altogether as requested three times whilst booking after first lot of food came out the food was eaten by the time the rest came out Mix up in kids desserts basically tried calling us liars until receipts proved it. Asked for bbq sauce at the beginning plus 5 times after for the my niece aged 4 didn’t come out until desserts which was too late. Then to be told we had to pay for the bbq sauce. Spoilt my daughters celebration as the mood deteriorated due to these faults

We met up after a funeral for a few drinks and snacks. They put on a wonderful spread, and the staff were so friendly, it turned a sad occasion into a wonderful one, allowing us to celebrate our loved ones life.

The whole experience was a disaster, i stated a disability on my booking and was offerd a table up in the raised section, sat us on a low level table when they saw the wheelchair, the drinks were flat & tastless ( gas & post mix empty ) same with 2nd round so not rectified, meal took 1,hr 39 minutes to arrive , was cold and un appetising i had a sald that consisted of 1 tomatoe cut into 4 that was well passed its date soft and wrinkled, shedded green cabbage?? And not much else , my chicken skewer was burnt and dryed out ( meal was returned untouched after wasting our afternoon there ) husband had a curry that was mass produced and tasteless, mother went back to carehome hungry late & unset , only came there is its a place her and late Dad frequented and even she said - do not take me there again its like Hell on earth , will definitely not be returning, along with a lot of other customers that were there on the day

My first time at nine giants, I was really surprised how big the beer garden was and that there was plenty of parking. On my visit there was a issue amongst other customers and I thought staff dealt with it really good considering it was a small crowd of boys. I didn't like the Pepsi max on pump really flat and tasteless but for 5p more switched to real coke in glass bottle, bargain. Food was ok, bit confused with the add extra on the steak I was expecting an extra 8oz on top of the 5oz stated on mixed grill my error. Steak was cooked a little over but to be expected being served on a sizzler plate. As a table of 10 I was pleased food came out together with only 1 plate being sent back as wrong order but staff soon sorted that out. Definitely be visiting again to enjoy the beer garden, well worth the drive from Barry.

Bit busy at 5pm but got served quickly and food came within 15 mins. The starter of salt n pepper mushrooms was delicious. Had the halloumi wrap which was choca bloc with halloumi. Fries cooked to perfection. We could see the chefs and colleagues working tirelessly and should be commended. Great service, great staff and a lovely pint to boot.

The food arrived 55 minutes after I ordered it. I had my disabled ward with me so he didn't mind that it was only luke warm.

Called in for a meal here,decided on surf and turf with medium steak and must say the steak was cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and efficient. Only thing negative was it could do with a lick of paint.

Friendly and helpful staff. Lovely food and excellent value for money. I'd mixed up the time of my booking so arrived half an hour late - the manager was very accommodating and still manages to squeeze us in.

Service was slow, took over 20 minutes to clear away finished plates from main course. Food differed from menu descriptions. For example, the children's burger was described as having grated cheese, lettuce and tomato. There was no lettuce and tomato and it was a slice of "burger cheese", this is problematic when you have a very fussy eater. Toilets were visibly dirty. The wallpaper and paint is peeling off the walls in numerous places. However, the children's make your own dessert sundae was well received. With so much competition in the area there was no reason to pick returning here over another venue.

20 of us, a mix of adults and children on a Saturday afternoon. The service was exceptional, staff couldn't do enough for us and ensured all our food came out of the kitchen at the same time, and piping hot. They even looked after the birthday cake I brought in, and they carried it to the table when we were ready, candles lit.

Food was amazing as usual but we'd like to thank Adam (as well as the other staff) as the pub was very busy due to a function and we did have a small issue with one food item that was sorted very quickly and offered is a free dessert 😁.

I think your staff were lovely. Very pleasant and helpful. The decor is terrible, paint and paper peeling off the walls, and it did not feel clean. The food was not great. I have not been to the venue in a few years (2017 ish), but have previously used it regularly and always thought it was good value for money and nice food. I feel that it has gone down hill since those days.

The food we good and my daughter loved playing with the dogs and the bar man was very nice

The steak wasn't very pleasant, it was very chewy, fatty too. The chips and rib were lovely. The service for the dessert was really disappointingly slow, we waited a long long time. Overall unfortunately it wasn't a great experience and the 3 of us were disappointed and it was Mother's day too.

Went to try the new menu. Shouldn’t have. As we got there, there was already food being returned. We ordered two of the new dishes a curry and a chicken dish but even waiting at the bar, the server was more interested in his coffee. The lady who served was lovely. After waiting almost thirty ministers for our two dishes they can put but forgot the sides. It wasn’t that busy! The chicken was cold the skin on fries were cold the beans were cold and the sauce was stone cold. After waiting so long, when there was a check back we couldn’t be bothered to complain as we were just grateful to have the food. The kebab skewer was luke warm and within minutes, rock solid and inedible and the side of chips again cold. We like the pub but won’t be coming again for food. We didn’t make a scene and my partner implored me to get a refund but I just couldn’t be bothered. Sad really. It used to be a nice place to go.

Ordered on the App and waited for two pepsi max to come, waited for 40 and got fed up so went to the bar where the staff didn't care and offered no apology. Usually visit the Pottery which is much better, will definitely not visit the Nine Giants again!

Last week I celebrated my birthday in The Nine Giants in Cardiff. And a meal in the day and a meal in the night. Both meals were superb and the staff were amazing.

Busy with rugby people but food was OK. Staff were lush. Had a lovely time but no problem taking food away.

If you come to this pub wear a thick coat scafe hat and gloves as it's freezing No heating on We was going to have a meal but after a couple of drinks decided to go home as it was so cold We will not be visiting again and will spread the word!

We visited the Nine Giants recently for a spot of lunch. We had a warm welcome and our table, which we booked, was ready and waiting for us. Ordering on the Sizzling app was easy. The drinks we ordered arrived promptly and it wasn't long before our food arrived. We went for the 2 meals for £11.75. We had the Gammon and a Vegetarian Sausage and mash meal. What excellent value and quality. The staff checked everything was ok with our food. We had no complaints. We'll definitely be back to try something different from the varied menu.

Today I have had a 5oz steak chips vegetables and corn on the cob the vegetables were really random like their was courgettes and squash but the steak was really nice so was the chips but the corn on the cob was really soft and the other one looked like it has been eaten then boiled for 10 years it was so bad I was really disappointed because I have been here before and the food was pretty good. The service was ok but they were very short staffed there were literally three people working there the thing I most annoyed with my experience was the corn on the cob it was so bad but there was these kids that were booting a football at the window like every three seconds it was really annoying so this is my review.

Lovely place to visit, garden looks lovely for a summer evening,good price on food but price of soft drinks is expensive, £3 glass lemonade, was not happy with that price.

Came here with the family and we ordered tikka masala, classic hot dog and a delicious Pork Belly. Food was fantastic and due to the rugby the atmosphere was fantastic! I strongly suggest coming here for a good quality meal at a good price Jack and his team deliver excellent service and interact brilliantly with their guests! Love coming here!

I had a lovely meal with my daughter and l had a perfectly cooked rump steak! Staff were lovely. We will be back soon!

We always receive great service & very tasty meals too. Plus our very young 16 month old Grandson is always made very welcome by the lovely staff.

Came here with my 8 and 10 year old for lunch on a Saturday. The atmosphere was lovely, lots of families here. My two had a meal deal for £5.99 which included food, drink and a sundae. I had grilled chicken skewers which was lovely. The staff were super friendly and very attentive. The food was super hot served and only took about 15 minutes. I was very good value for money. I would definitely recommend it.

Had many family meals here, never a bad meal...however Saturday's visit was definitely under par compared to our usual 5 star rating. All food in general not quite as nice, but in particular the steak on my son's mixed grill was undercooked and blood ran right around his plate. The steak was sent back and was gone and came back, eventually, overcooked. Half of it was charcoal and inedible. Very disappointing, such a shame. I have filled in a Sizzling Pubs experience form to this effect.

It was fairly quiet, so I was able to order immediately on arrival. Food did not take long to arrive. All good. We have waited much longer in the past, when it has been busier.

Groupon voucher declined at point of ordering. I would like to express my disappointment in the handling of this situation. The voucher was a key factor in choosing your facility, and its rejection created an inconvenience. There were no voucher restrictions, just I’m sorry we can’t accept this voucher as we can’t put it through the till. I believe transparency and effective communication are crucial in maintaining customer satisfaction. I hope this feedback serves as an opportunity to enhance your voucher redemption process.

Have used this pub for years. Food is always of a high quality and have always received an excellent service. It is family friendly with a nice beer garden. Food and drinks are reasonably priced. Adam, Josh and the team are always welcoming and go above and beyond to meet expectations.

Brilliant pub for food, we had the loaded surf and turf and steak and chicken combo with an upgrade to a sirloin and they both were cooked to perfection. We were shown to our table straight away, service was brilliant quick service at the bar even though it was really busy and food service was on point to. Thank you to all the nine giants team we will definitely be returning soon.
