The Newmachar Hotel in Aberdeenshire

Lovely restaurant. Great new menu being offered - I wish I could have tried everything on it as it all looked delicious. Fair pricing and lovely staff. Highly recommended

Moved into the area near enough a month ago and had been driving past the Newmachar Hotel for weeks when heading into Aberdeen. I had been eager to try it out so we decided to swing by for food yesterday afternoon. I ordered the lamb and my partner ordered the beef stroganoff with our child having the chicken bites. The waitresses were all very pleasant and attentive and brought our child's food first as requested (he was awfully hungry and starting to kick off so this kept him happy whilst we ate our food which arrived slightly after). As soon as ours arrived, my partner got instant food envy and I don't blame her. The lamb was spectacular! Only wish that the portion of lamb was slightly larger as I was still left peckish after eating the main meal. It was however left beautifully presented and 10/10 for the flavour. Kudos to the chefs! Overall, it's a great little restaurant and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

What a terrific restaurant a gem in the country ... From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a smile so friendly and accommodating we were whisked away to a beautiful table....the owner Grant welcomed us and had great suggestions...everything was top notch drinks were delicious and food was amazing if I could give 10 stars I would if you're in the area go and eat here stay here it was incredible I promise you will not be disappointed

Very disappointing. The food and service have gone massively downhill but the prices haven’t. Extremely overpriced for what they serve. It’s a real shame as it used to be really good. Big changes required!!!

I booked here for my sisters 50th afternoon tea. Was excellent. Lovely staff and service. Food was amazing. Chef came out and told us what was on the platters. My sister had a great afternoon. Highly recommend.

Not good at all. Cullen Skink was a piece of leek and tiny piece of fish with a horrible bland sauce poured over the fish from a separate container....not Cullen skink...awful. Tasteless. Wouldnt go back. Very poor...it was empty ...on a Saturday...this tells you something.

I came up to Newmachar from Perth to visit a friend and the Newmachar Hotel was a recommendation from her, being that I’d never been it had to be done! Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by a man called Mark and a young woman called Sophie - both of them were top class and knew exactly what they were doing. Being a newbie in the hotel bar I was made to feel very welcome, a great range of draught beers, spirits, the lot! I can’t fault this place and its staff at all, everyone was kind and friendly! If you’re looking for a grade A place for accommodation, food or just a drink (same here!) this is the gaff for you!! If I’m back up north I’ll be sure to pop in again, and I will be giving a high recommendation to my family and friends should they pass that way or fancy a little trip out of Aberdeen. I was here for two nights. The rooms were spotlessly clean and very nice.. The service was very good. Me and my colleague had dinner which was very nice great service happy days would highly recommend absolutely faultless.I actually only had a burger but it was probably the best burger I have had and I’ve just returned from North America 👌👌

The Hotel has been refurbished; the rooms and lounge area are lovely. However, our rooms had not been cleaned at all well; crumbs all over the floor, cobwebs in the bedroom and our bathroom floor hadn’t been cleaned. Also only one towel in the room. The complimentary coffee ea tray wasn’t clean. That said the Hotel is smart and the two members of staff we met were very pleasant. I think the room cleaner must have been in a rush the day we arrived!

First of all, the hotel is way overpriced for what you actually get. The complimentary breakfast that’s promised and included in the price, wasn’t there. The room itself is nice however quite small, but the shower was covered in mould and the water was spitting out in all different directions due to the holes being covered in filth. The extractor fan was very dusty and gross. Overall it’s just too much to pay when realistically all you’re getting is a bed, could’ve stayed somewhere else for cheaper that offered more. Very disappointed as this was for my partners birthday and it wasn’t how i expected at all. We will not be returning.

Outstanding Sunday Carvery! Roast Beef was melt on the mouth and all vegetables were so tasty too. First time here and we will be back again soon. Great service from a lovely waitress. Well done everyone x

I went here for a family members birthday in august - the food was average at best and expensive for the portion sizes, the macaroni portion was tiny and tasted like the sauce came from a box. Went here a second time in September and had the ‘roast’. I can only describe the way it was served as a big pile of mess with cauliflower cheese sauce/ gravy everywhere. It tasted okay but all the flavours just became one. The staffing is also sparse, it takes a while to get served drinks. It’s a shame as it used to be really good - but will now pick a different option.

Booked for supper but should have stayed at home.We were shown to a table for 2 next to a planter with high plants so we could not see the whole room. Went out with my partner who’s vegan and stopped in past here.After seeing the menu, which only had 4 main course choices on it, beef, salmon etc, asked the staff member if there were any vegetarian or vegan options.Um, soup maybe?Needless to say we left. Visited for lunch for the first time and will not be back. The woman serving was so rude to the point that we felt really unwelcome. Staff reasonably helpful, breakfast ordered night before, following morning - no cornflakes, Oates or portage, breakfast arrived plates up on a cold plate, my scrambled eggs came as fried, streaky bacon and not what I would call normal bacon , potato scone hard as the table and one cup of machine made coffee - cost £12.00.

Popped in here on mother's day for food. The menu was a bit basic and limited, but it struck me as very expensive that fish and chips, or a burger and chips were £15.50.

We had been contemplating eating at this restaurant for a while and decided to go for lunch. We both had cheese burgers which were perfectly adequate. The base price for the burger was £9.50 plus an additional £1.50 for a slice of cheese which we found to be expensive. I had a glass of red wine and the bill came to £25.00. There were two other diners in the restaurant and they left shortly after we arrived. We felt the decor and ambiance of the dining area to be gloomy. The evening menu had additional dishes. The available selection of food is somewhat limited. Parking is available to the front and rear of the restaurant.

Recently friends and family joined my Mum and Dad to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary at the Newmachar Hotel. Understandably it meant a great deal to them and they were anxious that everything should be just right. This was not an easy gig for the hotel, my folks are Christians, tee-total and very particular in what they wanted.

Annoyed me when I asked if they would put a Liverpool game on the TV in the back room on the small TV while the rangers game was on. "this is a Scottish pub" yes but I'd prefer to watch the Liverpool game......didn't happen. Haven't been back since. But it reckons itself. Mediocre at best

Attended recently for burger night. Had high hopes and was really looking forward to it. There was a big crown of us who majority had burgers some off main menu. I asked if I could possibly have house burger but with chicken breast instead which was no problem. When it arrived I had been given a breaded chicken fillet. It was ok but nothing startling. Husband said his beef burger was pretty dry and tasteless. Chips were just frozen I thought be at least hand cut. Son had mac n cheese which again was quite poor and he hardly ate any of it. He was last be served out of everyone and given sweet potato fried and chips on his plate. Again bit disappointing but he ate them all up. I would probably attend again but not on burger night far better places to go and get a good burger.

Stayed two nights when attending a wedding in the area. Our room was clean, comfy and modern. Staff exceptionally friendly,. We got lost on the way and they patiently talked us in on the phone. They organised taxis for us and made sure we had everything we needed. Breakfast was delicious. We hadn't been to the area before and feel that this hotel was a wee gem. Brilliant stay, we'll be back.

We were there today for a carvery today at 12-30 the turkey was dry roast beef very red nearly raw . The gammon was the best of them all . Vegetables not very hot . we went in and woman hoovering was really not interested,took her to go get us two teas,luckily the guy behind bar who i took as owner,told us we were to early for lunch,but he could rustle us up a bacon or egg roll,which he did and i have to say it was very good. don't let one person put you of though,give it a try,you might be lucky and get someone nice to serve you from the start.

Excellent meal. Was visiting friends in the village and we decided to have a meal here instead of driving home for food. Service was quick and with a friendly smile, food was delicious and we were very happy with the size of the portions.

Went here with my son and his partner for a evening meal. Wednesday evening is burger night and you get two for £12.50. Although we had the hot dogs which were huge we will be going back to try the burgers as they looked amazing.

I planned an afternoon tea party and cocktails for large group at this hotel for my sisters henny and I need to comment on how perfect everything was. The service we received on the day was great and the food was top class. The room was set out lovely and the organisation was great. The staff were so friendly and made it a special day for us all. Would highly recommend this for small or large groups. Thanks again for everything!

Welcomed and taken to our table, drinks ordered and time given to order, food delivered timeosly and was excellent quality, hot and very tasty, we had three courses and time was given to enjoy with subsequent courses delivered with no undue delay, staff were attentive and pleasant and we did not feel rushed. Ambiance was good and although busy did not feel crowded.

My sister got married here yesterday and I just feel the need to comment on how nice everything was. The wedding meal was delicious and very well presented. The place was set out lovely and the organization and running of the wedding by Sheena & Andy was very professional. The staff were very friendly and worked really hard to make the day special. Some family members stayed at the hotel and commented that the rooms were clean and comfortable.Well done to all and thank you.

Here I go again!!! You would think I would be beginning to learn not to go out for meals but I must always think, go on this time it will be better!!As I have said before I am a vegetarian and always get so peeved with what we are offered. The menu here had I think 3 or 4 options for me which is better than normal so I opted for the Thai Green Curry after the waiter’s recommendation. We waited for quite a while after we had placed our order, no big problem as we were busy chatting. Our dishes came, all made out to look impressive I suppose with all the usual separate dishes which basically are there to make you think you are getting more than you actually are!! No need and just a palaver if you ask me!! Anyway my Vegetable Thai Green Curry consisted of 3 HUGE chunks and I mean HUGE of courgette (or it could’ve been cucumber it was hard to tell!), I think the chef must have lost his knife! and about then the tiniest slither of yellow pepper possible (must’ve found the knife for them), swimming in a green pool of yogurt type, very tasteless sauce! Another dish containing a tiny amount of rice, not nearly enough to soak up the runny tasteless sauce and in any case I never got a spoon to transfer the runny sauce from dish to dish!! Oh and the nan was nowhere to be seen so asked the waiter who returned with a tiny square sandwich type bread, which I think could well have been a Warburtons thin!!! So yet again no I was not happy and no I didn’t say anything, fed up with it, and basically does anyone care…..no! Oh and that will be £13.95 for that offering. Also the booth that we were seated at the pad on the seat was ripped to shreds!!Needless to say I won’t be back!

A last minute decision to eat here on a Saturday evening.lovely decor and a very cosy feel. Good choice of food.some lovely twists on some classics like the stovie Bon bons my parents had. For being busy,we didn't wait too long for courses. We were so stuffed, we couldn't do dessert(next time) average pricing and lovely staff.we will be returning :)

Good menu selection of no-nonsense meals at reasonable prices. Generous portions. Good service. Only criticism is about the number of non-working lights (both in the main restaurant and the gents) and general gents toilet maintenance. Definitely hope to return next time we're visiting family in the area.

A few of us met for a meal, staff was very nice, food was lovely, I had the bruschetta very nice i would say it was slightly over priced for what was on the board, (only one piece of bread and previously my friend had been a couple of weeks before and she had two pieces of bread)and I think it would of been better on a plate as when trying to cut it the board was moving about.(just something to think about)

I recently visited with my sister and were slightly disappointed as they were still offering a limited dish selection due to the time of year.There was a dish on the menu called chicken McFarlane that we were unsure what was. Our waitress told us that it was chicken stuffed with a cream cheese/olive and asparagus served with a basil cream sauce. On her recommendation we both decided to go for this and we were so glad we did. It came beautifully presented with mash and roasted vegetables with extra sauce at the side in a jug.I have to say that this is one of the best dishes I have ever tasted and told the waitress that they must keep this on the menu. It was £15 which some may class as slightly pricey for a lunchtime but it was worth every penny.I will certainly be visiting again soon for another Chicken McFarlane.Compliments to the chef!

We have been coming here since we moved to the area a year ago and it is always a good experience. The menu has a good selection, there is a nice atmosphere and the prices are reasonable. They also do a good loyalty scheme for regulars which is nice. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.

We ate here on a Sunday night and was impressed by the menu and with the meals we chose. Only downside to the evening was the service was slow. We had to ask to pay our bill three times. Not a big problem but felt as if staff were more intrested in watching the karaoke that was in a different room.

Recently visited Newmachar Hotel to celebrate the birthday of a family member and had a great day. Very friendly staff and décor was nice. A few negatives, bathroom tap in the gents toilets was broken and purple flowers in the restaurant area were full of cobwebs.

It was clear some sort of function was to take place that evening, this was not mentioned to us. Disco music then started and double doors were closed, this did not block out the noise of the DJ.The menus looked very nice and upmarket. We ordered the 'posh monkfish scampi'. Firstly monkfish is called poor mans scampi and secondly there was nothing posh about it. 6 pieces of breaded fish in a tiny basket, a dollop of pea purée and a portion of skinny French fries. McDonalds fries are better than those we were given. If it's to be posh then what about real chunky chips as opposed to cheap frozen fries. Plates were stone cold. Asked for vinegar and sauces, I'm still waiting for that. Off and on through the meal we were interrupted by and annoying waiter checking all was ok. Asked for latte and Irish coffee, both sent back as were cold and it was obvious that they couldn't make a proper Irish or latte. ( must mention that they did deduct coffees from the bill).On leaving the dining area we didn't know how to get out as there was a race night taking place and our only option was to walk over the race mat and ponies, move chairs out of the way and try to get out of the bar.It is very obvious that a lot of money has been spent on the place, ladies toilets have clearly had a lot of work but sadly the old Formica doors don't fit with the new decor.Clearly trying to be a gastro pub but sadly falling way short of the mark. Food was ok but not what it professed to be on menu and £15 for 6 bits of breaded fish and a handful of cheap fries was a bit much.

Having arrived at 5 to 8 (kitchen closes at 8pm) on a Sunday, we were expecting to be turned away, however with a quick check with chef we were seated and served! The only change to the Sunday carvery would be that it was served from the kitchen- no problem at all! My partner had a starter, pate and oatcakes. Looked beautiful and he thoroughly enjoyed it, could have done with an extra oatcake or two to finish the large portion of pate. We both chose meats from the carvery along with all the trimmings. I did wonder if the meat would be dry having been served all day but when it arrived it was delicious, fresh and hot, along with all its accompaniments. An extra jug of gravy was also brought to the table, a nice touch. I had the rolo cheesecake for desert which was also lovely and a very generous portion. Overall, a great meal with great service despite our late arrival. We were made to feel very welcome despite being the only customers left. Not rushed at all, we were made to feel relaxed and left to enjoy our meal in full.

Was pleasantly surprised with the nice decor and ambience. Good friendly service and food brought at ideal intervals. We had a variety of different dishes between diners and everyone was very happy especially those with fish and chips! Puddings were all beautiful and home made, not bought in cheesecakes etc like some establishments, also home made fudge served with coffee, nice touches. I would definitely recommend a meal here and I will also look forward to returning :-)

Given the hype for this restaurant I must admit I was excited to visit. Have to say that it definitely didn't meet my expectations. A group of nine of us visited on Saturday for a leaving meal. Upon booking a box of chocolates had been promised for the member of our party who is leaving her job but the chocs were nowhere to be seen. Service was fine and quick and the waitress polite. Our starters were OK, however the main course wasn't so good. One of our party had ordered seabass which came out late and raw. It was replaced but we were disappointed as to how this could happen. Another of the group had fish but it was very, very greasy!Dessert was the biggest disappointment, however. I ordered a Mars Bar Sundae and was presented with a big, long spoon. As the dish cost £6.25 I expected a nice big pudding. What came was pretty rubbish. A small dish with 3 scoops of chocolate ice cream and half a mars bar broken up over the ice cream does not make a sundae, especially one costing what it did!On the whole, I'm left feeling fairly indifferent towards a restaurant I was really keen to visit.
