Very nice venue in an idyllic bit of Herefordshire, very close to the Wye. The pub opened specially for our group of around 20 (not normally open on winter Tuesdays) and the food was excellent. Alas our hostess Katie had a medical emergency that day and no desserts were on offer, but we will definitely return.

Simeon and Kate were exceptional hosts. Having turned up for a hearty meal after a day kayaking on the Wye we found they were fully booked and unable to accommodate us. Instead of turning us away, they kindly drove us to a local pub so we didn't have to walk half an hour and miss our food. A nice pub with proper village values, although we only had one beer there, it was a lovely atmosphere and they were most generous hosts.

What a fab pub. The food was excellent. So fresh. The salad starter I had was crunchy and fresh and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his pork starter with a Smokey soy dip. The mains were fabulous. Succulent and perfectly cooked herbed salmon with FRESH perfectly cooked veggies. My husband had piri-piri chicken which was large and delicious. The waitress was attentive and had a lovely personality with us and all the other customers , even when rushed off her feet with a group of walkers suddenly popping in. We met the owner /chef who was super friendly and very good at his job. The menu is varied with some traditional pub dishes and some interesting Jamaican twists. Can’t wait to go back. Excellent fresh food, well cooked. Great service. Clean and tidy. Very reasonable prices. HIGHLY recommend! Good on you team Harp

We have visited this place several times whilst at Tresseck and were pleased when the new owners took it over. Our first meal under new management was great - the scotch egg was unbelievable. Unfortunately, this visit's food was not good. I ordered medium steak and it came very well done and my partner's corn was stone cold. Have to say the girl that served us was lovely, as were the people on the bar. It's a fab place for a drink if camping and hopefully, this was just an unfortunate glitch.

What a disaster. Table of 8 booked 3 weeks ago. The pub was busy and had a good atmosphere, if you ignore the rude customers! Ordered our food and drinks at the table. Drinks came within a resonable time, but the food took over an hour. Not a problem in itself as we were all chatting and entertaining ourselves. Unfortunately, it seems that some of the food had been ready for a while and sat there getting cold while the rest of it was cooked. Piri Piri chicken was stone cold, the vegetables were cool, the pies were luke warm as were the chips, but the fish and chips were piping hot! New potatoes were substituted with diced fried potatoes with no explanation or apology. These were not eaten as not liked by the customer. I returned my cold piri piri chicken and it was offered to be recooked or I could order something else but as we had already waited over an hour I wasn't prepared to wait again and then have everyone else wait for me to get my meal. No problem getting it taken off the bill, but we will not be returning. On a side note, the table next to us also waited over an hour for food, then got their mains brought out before they had received their starters!! Obvs, they were sent back and it was another 30 mins before the starters arrived. Goodness knows what time they are able to leave! I definitely would NOT recommend.

They let us dry out by the fire, and put more heating on for us. We had a lot of dietary requirements and again they couldn't have been more helpful, letting us know that they could make anything vegan by using alternative cheese, mayo and butter. I would thoughly recommend if you are in the area.

As some of us were staying in Ross on Wye we started our car journey back, unfortunately our journey was just awful as blocked roads led us to seek a different route, we were going round in circles so we called in New Harp Inn, by which time it was closed but owner came to door and directed us on alternate route, he was amazing.

I went up to the bar and was confronted with a volley of barked instructions. “ You can’t be served at the bar” , “ sign in by the door”, “ sit down if you want serving”, “ no you can’t go out that way”. We found our way ,with not a word of assistance to the garden, where we sat and waited and waited until we left.I hate complaining. While on our hols in a local Shepherds Hut, myself and partner were looking for a traditional country pub for a nice but no-frills evening meal, with our dog in tow! This place fit the bill perfectly. A friendly welcome and COVID procedures absolutely top-notch. Food was perfectly fine. My partner had a juicy burger with all the trimmings and I had the ribs which although weren’t overly tender, were full of flavour and covered in a yummy bbq sauce. Pudding in the form of a shared chocolate and hazelnut torte with after eight ice-cream was really scrummy! The bill came to a reasonable total for food and alcoholic drinks combined. Would certainly recommend and happily visit again.

I have visited this pub a hand full of times and I struggle to understand why I have ever returned. The staff are consistently rude and create at times, an unbearable and awful atmosphere. The food is below par with the contending pubs in the area which could be overlooked if it was an enjoyable environment to enjoy a drink with friends and family but this is far from reality. The staff are extremely argumentative and just plain rude. I am not a local to the village myself but I have witnessed staff be continuously rude to locals and find this very telling in a place where locals provide a pubs bread and butter. It is evident that they are not natural welcoming pub owners and Are unable in creating an enjoyable atmosphere for guests, locals and even their fellow staff members.

We ordered food and a drink as they have the monopoly in the village. 50 minutes later two pie of the day meals were served, both undercooked but one looked as if it had exploded onto the plate and I wouldn't bet against the fact that it had been tampered with! Disabled access is good from what i can remember. Those with sticks and other protrusions will have no problem and those with wheels can roll up to the front door from the car park. Whilst camping with my family, we thought we would go to the pub by the campsite, as it was nice and easy to get to. Regretted going instantly. We were not greeted in a welcoming manner, we were treated like we were a pain to have, even though we had previously booked earlier on in the day. When we arrived, admittedly a couple of minutes late, we got told in a very aggressive manner “you will not get served for another half hour” with no hello, no nothing. Another lovely couple who had driven down from Scotland!!!! Had been told “they couldn’t have a table and it wasn’t their problem they had drove down from Scotland” it was absolutely shocking! And after a couple of minutes, seated them, so what was the point in speaking to them in such a horrible manner? We had originally reserved a outside table but had got told to sit at a table inside which wasn’t a problem but got again..spoke to with much anger “has someone actually seated you here??” Throughout the whole meal you could hear and see these staff talking to people so rudely. It was sad for these people who had come for a nice weekend away with family and friends. However, half way through the meal a waiter had took over with the service and the atmosphere changed instantly. His customer service and his attitude was really something the other staff should take on board. It has such potential if was run properly, by nice genuine people. It is shocking how after so many negative reviews, it’s still the same. Very very sad. Will say again, thank you to the young lad that had made the last remaining hour there much more pleasurable. Will not be returning for sure.

Some friends and I reached this pub very hungry and thirsty after a 30 mile bike ride, hoping to get a meal. Regretfully we had arrived after the kitchen had closed but we thought we might get a cheese sandwich or similar. Instead we were met by a very surly and disinterested barmaid (perhaps the licensee?). When asked what food was available she responded very bluntly that the kitchen was closed but when pressed further we were able to by peanuts, crisps, pickled eggs, cake and various drinks all served in a gruff, almost reluctant, manner. After demolishing everything we had bought we found a few slices of dried bread from a loaf we had bought earlier so set about those too. When the barmaid spotted us she made an enormous fuss about eating our own food on the, otherwise empty, premises and when we tried to respond that we had tried to order her food and had then bought everything she could offer she withdrew from the bar grumbling. We will not return again.

We have visited twice before and both times loved the food but felt ambiguous about the service, but went again as we always do when camping in the wonderful tressack campsite. We went in for a drink in the afternoon, and booked at the bar for dinner later on in the day. When we arrived for dinner, our booking clearly had never been made as we heard one of the waitresses rudely asking "grahame WHO??". We got to our table and ordered burgers, and decided not to order additional onion rings as we were clearly told that all the burgers come with one onion ring as part of the meal. When they arrived with no onion rings, we asked if they were missing but were told they don't come with any and it was the waitresses mistake. Yet she didn't offer to bring us any (which would have quickly ammended the mistake). When we last went, the blue suede moo was a burger with blue cheese (which was amazing) so we ordered one of these again without hesitation. When it arrived without blue cheese we asked about it and were told the menu had changed but not the name. "Blue suede moo" is a bit of a misleading name for a burger with no blue cheese on it anymore! The food was good, but not as good as previously and definitely felt over priced at £15 per burger. We then waited 40 minutes for ice cream and when we politely asked if it had been forgotten about, we were told we would have to just wait as the waitress didn't have time to do desserts as well and the kitchen was "blocked". If we were told this before ordering, we wouldn't have bothered as we had kids to get home to bed.

A group of 9 of us had lunch here following our canoe trip celebrating my 40th. The pub is set in a beautiful location. I booked a table a few hours earlier and they readily fitted us in. As soon as we stepped through the door we were made to feel uncomfortable. We were very firmly told that one of us needed to leave a cash card as many people had left without paying in the past. Fair enough but there’s a way of explaining this in a more polite, clear way not in an aggressive, accusing tone. It was embarrassing to be honest. We tried to be very polite to the owners in response to try and calm the situation. Nobody showed us where to sit, we had to guess our way to our table. We then proceeded to sit in the decking area which was pleasant. The menus given to us were very confusing and needed updating. The new waitress was very accommodating and tried her best in a difficult situation. Following this, we all placed our orders. The gentleman owner was overly familiar with us and was derogatory to one of our group in regards to her small stature. She ordered the pie option. As we were eating he sat with us and talked on incessantly. He asked her to stand up and turn around which she nervously did. He sized her up and down and said that someone of her size would never finish the pie. It was all rather awkward! He said that he’d give her 50% off her meal if she’d finish the pie and he also said that he’d give me 50% off my meal as it was my birthday. We did not ask for this but he repeatedly offered it. My friend persevered and ate the whole pie for this reason but the offer was not honored by him nor my offer of 50% off. Instead he brought us all a scoop each of grainy, bubble gum ice cream which we didn’t want and said that that covered it. The lady owner, possibly his wife was very rude when we were paying and told her about the 50% off that we were supposed to have. She refused to give the 50% off; again we felt embarrassed and awkward. The food itself was tasty enough to be fair but the owners’ people skills were very much lacking.

I have just eaten the best pie that I have had in ages. All homemade on the premises and absolutely stuffed with really tender beef. They are very, very busy tonight, but the service has been great and friendly. It's not a gastro pub, but it's a fab, friendly country pub and the food is great

This pub had a warm welcome, good service and lovely food. Well worth a visit and would return. Couldn't quite give it 5 stars as it was a bit cold - didn't seem to be any heating on, so could have been a cosier environment. But overall great.

Visited the New Harp inn whilst traveling home from Cardiff. We followed the sign off the A49 and although it took a little longer to get to the pub than expected it was worth it, Hoarwithy was a pleasant little village and the pub was quaint enough. We sat outside and enjoyed a local cider sold by the bottle and a wye valley bitter that was refreshing in the sunny bear garden. The pub is not pristine but was clean and certainly had a charm all off its own. We ordered food from a small but good menu and it arrived in a reasonable time but more importantly was excellent, very enjoyable indeed. Overall a very pleasing establishment well worth a visit.

Have passed this pub on many occasions and thought how nice it looked, decided to meet my friend there for lunch. First impressions were good, nice and fairly clean,ok decor. But it was let down by the miserble staff. The food was average. It's a shame because it's in a nice area.

Set menu with not much choice, way overpriced for poor food and rude staff, won’t be going back in a hurry! Shame it ruined our day by the bill and lack of service

Chay Brine and I just wanted to thank Belinda and Adrian and all of the staff at the New Harp Inn for making our wedding party so special. Everyone went above and beyond to accommodate us, the food was amazing and we could not have done it without you all. All of our guests have said how brilliant it as too, I am so glad we had it at the Harp and we will be back for a meal soon to reminisce on our wonderful night! :D huge thank you again x

I went here during the last weekend of November with a group of girlfriends. We were greeted by the very friendly landlord & landlady, who served us our drinks orders with some great banter & lots of laughs.

I have visited this place a few times at different times of the day and each time have been blown away at the quality of food served, from the ox cheek Wellington to the picnic bench my taste buds had a party. Every mouthful made me smile and if your lucky to chat to the chef his passion for food is evident.

Myself, my partner and our golden retriever had a lovely lunch here. It was very quiet but it was a Thursday lunch time. The staff were polite and made us laugh. The chef seemed very into his food and enjoy his cooking. I had the harp burger and my partner had the halomi burger. I ordered the 'pear & apple' cumble and the chef came out to say the apples were from his mother's orchard, which was nice to hear how fresh it was and it tasted great.

Went as part of a large group who had just finished an eight mile paddle down the river. The canoe company pick you up from here and return you to the start, so the pub presumably has quite a lot of custom from groups like ours. We had pre-booked, but the unfriendly "landlady" just kept on whingeing about how busy she'd be doing our order, and could we make our choices as quickly as possible etc etc. It was as if she was doing us a favour by taking our money. We have been once before, and she was similar then. One of the locals sitting at the bar had the impertinence to inquire about having some food himself, but was given the "I've got twenty-four out the back, and another party of twenty-two due, so it'll be about six weeks before you get your food" spiel which she was so keen to trot out. The poor chap decided to retract his preposterously cheeky request, at which she back-tracked a little, possibly realising that her attitude and "selling-style" might not actually be good for the pub's coffers.

A busy week supervising Duke of Edinburgh expeditions down the river but it is so nice when the need arrives to check teams on the campsite adjacent. The food and service here never disappoints and I only wish that I could find the excuse to bring my partner for a visit to this lovely area and superb country pub.

Very well located close to the banks of the River Wye. A variety of beers on offer and menu seemed restaurant themed rather than pub food with chefs rather than cooks, hence the food prices, e.g. £14.50 for pie and chips. Lots of outside tables but a nice place to stop for a drink on a Wye-side walk.

A group of us met at this county pub as a halfway point between our homes. The food was very disappointing, in spite of the friendly chef coming out to the garden to take our order. He gave the tuna steak special the hard sell describing it as ‘sushi quality’ but it really wasn’t. I think my first suspicion that he had a job lot he was trying to shift was the right one! The salads were almost made up entirely of flat leaf parsley and the bread rolls were as hard as rocks. It’s a shame as otherwise we had a fun evening and the staff were very welcoming.

The waitress, possibly the owner was very short with us. Table booked for 7pm. As we were sitting down, she told us she needed our orders by 7.15. One of our party was a little late and she just stood over her telling her she needed to choose instantly. No friendly greeting or smiles. It wasn't actually very busy either. We were told to get our own water from the tap and that she didn't have time to take our drinks order; we should go to the bar. With no apology.

When exploring the countryside and looking forward to a Sunday lunch we came across the lough pool inn. Managed to get a seat outside only to be told if we hadn’t booked we couldn’t eat. So pressed onto the cottage of content at Carey, nearly 2pm so no lunch to be had there either. Then we visited the new harp in hoarwithy, food being served til after 3 and no need to have booked. Yippee.......lunch was lovely, I had the lamb my husband had the beef. Very nice staff, friendly pub.....reasonable prices. Pretty village too.

Possibly the worst experience of a country pub I've ever had. Wanted to order fish & chips to take away (we were staying in the campsite next to the pub), their sign said they did it 7 days a week, the chef who came out to take food orders was abrupt and rude when telling us no he wouldn't be doing that, it's Sunday lunch and he didn't have the right size fish?? We asked then if we could just have some chips to take away which he was not happy about and told us we wouldn't be a priority and there'd be a wait because the restaurant was busy - we only saw one table of 4, everyone else was watching the football which they had rudely told our friend earlier that they wouldn't be showing. After the chef disappeared to the kitchen a woman came out to help the poor barman who was on his own with a busy bar full of people waiting, she offered to take my payment and, again, was rude when I told her we had ordered take away chips, she stormed into the kitchen to (what looked like) have a moan at the chef before returning to ask where we were sitting which was outside, we needed to be specific and give her the exact number, there were two empty tables right by the entrance which we indicated we would be at so it wouldn't have been difficult to find us. Next, their card machine wasn't working and so my payment didn't go through the first try, the barman (who was very polite and actually seemed embarrassed of the behaviour by both the chef and this woman) explained it was their machine playing up and wouldn't be my card, the woman then said 'oh I don't know, sometimes it is' and looked at me. If it was meant as a joke it wasn't funny nor did it come across as one especially after the way we had been treated so far.

After a long days canoeing, we pre-booked a table for 4 at The Hew Harp Inn. Arriving slightly earlier than our reserved time, we ordered some drinks and let the young barman know we had arrived, if possible for us to be seated earlier, if not no problem. He very helpfully said he would find out for us. We then had our drink came back and the landlady abruptly told us that we could not have our table early (which would not have been a problem) until we were then rudely told we had to go back outside and wait. This we felt was not professional customer service. We then were seated and ordered the food was good. We then had to pre book and pay for a full English breakfast (£8.75) and select a time. When arriving for breakfast we were offered tea and coffee which was brought promptly however was ruined by an atmosphere created by the owner arguing with another customer. The food came out and was less than average. 1 bacon, 1 sausage, 1 Egg, 1 hash brown, half a tomato, a mushroom cut into quarters and a spoonful of luke warm beans all seem a little under cooked (pale) made breakfast feel incredibly over priced. At this point, we requested extra coffee, to which we were told by the manager could we not see how busy she was and we would have to wait, a wholly unnecessary response as we would have gladly waited for it.

Fantastic overall experience. Well presented pub with a fantastic atmosphere and great food! The majority of the food was handmade and it all tasted delicious. Very high quality food and large portions. We were encouraged to customise the food we ordered which is a big help to those who have specific dietary requirements. The member of staff that greeted us upon entering the Black Lion was very friendly and created a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back soon! Thank you!

Booked an evening meal whilst staying in log cabin near by. Large portions of home cooked food, quick service and friendly and helpful staff. Reasonably priced, in fact we were surprised and were expecting to pay more for the quality. The decor is lovely as well, quite cozy on an autumn evening. Will definitely return next time we are in the area
