This place has truly turned a corner. It was dreadful but now the food is very good. All credit to the team who have done this. I had the starter of fried cauliflower it was superb, i like crunchy veg not all do but i loved it. The main course peri chicken. The chicken was moist the chips lovely. Would wish it was more spicy but it was very nice My friend has the chicken with beans and sausage it looked very tasty i will have that next time. The moral of the story is simple if it is bad review the truth, then they will improve or die, if you dont they will just keep being bad. This place has got it right made the effort and has made it good. 6 stars from me.

Stopped in for dinner with friends. We are out on the balcony overlooking the river. They had run out of the Lamb Shank, which we all wanted. Three of us ordered the Fish Pie and all greed it was one of the best fish pies we’d experienced. Chunks of fish, scallops and prawns in a rich sauce all perfectly cooked with fresh vegetables. Excellent.

Had a really lovely time at this restaurant and it’s in a beautiful spot directly on the river. Didn’t really see inside but the outside area is gorgeous. Good was amazing too and the service match. Definitely recommend.

Had breakfast here on a sunny Saturday morning. The outside spaces all with fabulous views of the river were well maintained and comfortable. We were greeted by Zoe who couldn’t have been more welcoming. The service was excellent. We had a lovely breakfast made all the better by the added bonus of a live singer which really enhanced the overall friendly vibe.

Great location on the Thames. In nice weather good location to eat outside. Worth booking as even mid week in the summer busy. Pub grub but absolutely fine. Local beer.

While on a long walk by the river, we thought we'd stop for a bite to eat at the island grill and some refreshments. Now today is 28°, height of the summer holidays and they don't open the grill till 2pm. This used to be such a lovely place under previous management, always had things going on, live music, great selection of beers and the sense to open the lunch grill for lunch time. Unfortunately now, there's no live music, no atmosphere, terrible selection of lagers and ales and no food till 2 unless you want a meal from the restaurant. 4 separate groups were there hoping to order from the grill at 12.45 today and 3 of the groups just left without even a drink. The manager says they were delayed opening only for that day but friends that went the previous 2 weeks also say the grill was closed. The best thing that can happen to this establishment is to go under, shut doors and start again with some management that had some business sense and more than a GCSE C in business studies. Until new management we won't be frequenting again. Was one of the best place to eat and drink but now one of the worst in town, very sad

My wife and I, with our daughter and fiance dropped in without reservation for lunch and were given an excellent waterside table on the outdoor terrace. The menu was fairly standard for a pub lunch but the food was very well cooked and presented. Service was quick, polite and attentive and everything we ordered was served quickly but with no feeling that we were being hurried. The wine list was interesting and reasonably priced. Definitely a venue I would return to.

Judging this to be a good meeting point between Warwick and Portsmouth, we booked for 1230 and our friends arrived soon after. There were plenty of free tables and we sat centrally and ordered 2 bottles of rose followed by four roast beefs. Surprisingly, the food was served on cold plates and arrived only luke-warm. It was soon wordlessly snatched back and replaced by four similar dishes, again on cold plates. The magic of dining out was gone really since there was no apology. After we had eaten, which involved chomping through some barely steamed cabbage and pushing a lot of fat and gristle to the side of our plates, the same woman placed pudding menus in front of each of us again without comment. We paid our £150 and left. It would have been far better had there been a more friendly and personal approach. After all, this is top money for a pub lunch and would have easily topped £200 had we stayed. We went into town for coffees and cakes after.

I liked the location and soon spotted a table. As a solo diner I was explaining to the waitress how difficult it is to nab a table and then have to leave all your stuff unattended to go and order. Whilst doing this someone else sat at the table, she soon turfed them off so I could sit down and sorted out a menu, drinks etc. It was wonderful. I'm recently bereaved and it's very difficult to sit alone without feeling conspicuous. I was made so welcome and really enjoyed my lovely lunch of goats cheese tart and moules mariner. There was a great menu selection. I had a very pleasant time, sat by the river, watching the wildlife, particularly the tipsy stag do in a boat they had no idea how to paddle. That made me laugh out loud! Thank you waitress Elisha.

Lovely place to dine out beside the river. The outside terrace was fully booked and as we only popped in on the off chance were more than happy to dine in the restaurant. We had heard that dining here was pricey but it was average for very good quality food. Staff were excellent.

First time visiting, we arrived late to a very busy bar and restaurant, the staff especially Elisha who went above and beyond to fit us in. Overall the food was great food with outstanding views!!

We just got back from a fabulous lunch here. The setting is fantastic, a great spot on the river with a gorgeous outside space. The food was fantastic & the team there are so friendly & attentive. We wished we lived more locally to the area as we would be here a lot! Definitely shall be back for a visit soon though.

Flying solo, so popped in for a beer ! I suppose you would call it rustic/modern. Have you ever walked into a pub, felt unwelcome? It did not happen here !. It was busy, but filled with happy, smiling and chatting people. Great news, Timothy Taylor Landlord available. Very polite barman ( Max ), no problem with a dimpled handle. Due to the aromas from the kitchen area, I asked if I could have just a portion of chips. Max suggested the "skin on fries" as being good, and I have to say they were the very best chips I have had in a long, long time, the seasoning was exceptional. I sat at a barrel on a comfy stool. It was so pleasant there, I had another pint ! Forget the poor reviews, you will not be disappointed. Unfortunately, time restraints did not allow me to call in on my return journey, but be assured I will return. A great experience.

We stopped for a quick early lunch at the Nags Head, a beautifully situated Pub on the River in Abingdon. It opened bang on 12 mid-day, and we were welcomed by polite, friendly, smiling staff. We really enjoyed a crispy squid starter and a Wagyu beefburger .. all well presented .. and most importantly, delicious!! The accompanying chips were perfect .. crisp and hot. Thank you Nags Head .. you've got your customer service and the food quality and quantity just right! We'll be back!

Visited to eat on a Sunday evening. Quite busy. Service not good waiting staff seemed very disorganised. Food okay not fabulous. But the worst thing was as we were leaving one of the waiting staff was carrying bins through the restaurant past tables where people were eating. Not good. It’s a shame as the setting is lovely beside the river.

Been coming to this pub on & off now for several years.... mostly in the warmer months coz of its huge garden. It's always been a great spot for a weekend drink/lunch with mates as soon as sun comes out. This time tho - it was next level great. It feels like somebody actually cares about the place now. Brand new garden furniture looked funky. Menu was on point...and the staff were so good and helpful. Like they enjoyed their job. We stayed for hours instead of the 1 pint we intended. Whoever the boss is... you're nailing it. So good to see a pub (& team) that seems to want people to feel welcome and appreciated.

Passing through town on Friday 13/4, stopped for lunch. Beautiful location on river. Huge restaurant. We had drinks outside as sunny day. Unfortunately we couldn’t have food where we were sitting but enjoyed drinking with a view. Lovely pub. As we walked out we saw other outside areas we could have had food. I visited The Nags Head for the first time during a business trip to Abingdon. Put it this way, I will be returning next time I am down, I loved everything, the food, the staff, and the setting…..just wow, could have sat all night!!! Just perfect 👌🏼

A great setting overlooking the river. The food was excellent and a little different from the norm. We were served by Ella who was both efficient and friendly - a credit to the younger generation.

Nice variety of choices on the menu. We chose a piri piri chicken and a paella. Both were really nice, I did suggest to the waitress them might like to provide a bowl for the mussel shells. Dessert was nice despite me getting the wrong one, but it was still good. Few minor tweaks would make it better.

Having been local to Abingdon I know the Nags head very well and have visited many times over the years. Other than being slightly on the pricer side (you pay that bit extra for the great location!) It's always been very good both as a bar and restaurant. Unfortunately on the most recent visit this was not the case. Some, though certainly not all staff members were very aloof, and one even verging on angry, which my partner found quite intimidating while placing an order at the bar. The food we ordered was largely up to the usual good standard. However, we ordered a vegan paella, and what was supplied was nothing remotely like that described. Missing ingredients, and essentially we were given a small, incredibly over cooked plate of risotto rice, devoid of flavour or seasoning, with large poorly chopped chunks of veg in it. Had anyone bothered to come and check all was well with the food we would have pointed this out, as it was I ended up eating most of this bland, lazy meal, and my partner ate half of my vegan burger (this was very good). Sadly the service and quality of food on this visit has left us questioning returning again.

A lovely lunch at the Nag’s Head on 27 Jan 24. Delicious food - chicken and polenta for one of us, cheese and steak pie for the other. Both were excellent. Amy, Ningwa and Elisha provided very good service.

We love coming to the Nag's Head - shout out to Elisha who always makes us feel so welcome and goes out of her way to entertain and provide for our 2-year-old daughter. Plus, it's a historic pub on an island in the Thames with a amazing garden - what's not to like!!

We walk to the Nags Head as a family with dogs and have enjoyed the location which allows us to walk a very scenic route and also get fed! We have always enjoyed the variety and quality of food on offer as well as the garden overlooking the Thames, which has been a particular favourite of my wife. So we attended on Christmas day with high expectations which I have to say the staff exceeded. The thought, imagination and professionalism that went into the presentation and quality of the ingredients was very evident. The service was to the normal high standards but huge kudos to the chef and those involved in the kitchen for an exceptional and memorable Christmas dinner. I shall not write that it was the best Christmas dinner ever in case my Wife or Mum reads this review.

Returned to The Nags Head for Christmas lunch after a break of several years due to an indifferent meal experience in the past. The experience has certainly picked up - really impressed with the service and meal quality. The staff interaction was great and the ambience impressed. Lovely table overlooking a grey Thames, but some things can't be controlled! Thanks to all staff, would be unfair to single out any individual as certainly a team effort.

We went for an extended family post Christmas reunion lunch after visiting several times before over 3 years. The balance of bar, beer, food, choice and ambiance is spot on and was all quickly and efficiently delivered. Elisha and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. We will definitely be using this great pub venue again for our family get togethers!

We went to the Nags Head for our Xmas day meal and i have to say the food, service and atmosphere was excellent. We were warmly welcomed by Robin and led to our table, with Elisha and Anna then looking after us throughout the meal. I am regular customer. We come to Nags Head quite often for drinks or food. Recently we came for Xmas dinner with some friends and as always we had a great time! Firstly let appreciate the beautiful Xmas decor and cozy atmosphere. Secondly delicious dishes, as well as beautiful presentation, wide selection of drinks (wines & beers). Staff always friendly and professional. I would recommend to everyone! Our favourite place in Abingdon! 5 stars from me!
