We’ve been here several times now and are always so pleased we called in. It’s a lovely village to start with and this cafe/meeting place must be fantastic for the locals. For us on walks or sloe picking missions, the coffee and bacon ciabatta “reward,” is always something to look forward to. The guys and girls serving, are ALL brilliant and they make it all look so easy. Chatter is dominant and usually full of friendly faces. We got the last table today, in from the storm. Thanks to all of you, look forward to the next time.

I like the sign above the door of the Mustard Tree that declares it to be a cafe and meeting place, because that is exactly what it is, and when we went in there were young mums with babies enjoying a chat over cups of tea and coffee; a group of elderly ladies, probably plotting mischief, and couples like us simply making the best of retirement time. We only had coffees, which were excellent, but they also do hot and cold snacks as well as splendid looking cakes etc., and the service is welcoming and very efficient. We only discovered this gem of a place last year and it is now in the must visit category whenever we are in the area.

The Mustard Tree is a community cafe situated in the Methodist church on the main road in the village centre. We actually almost drove past as, because of the lighting, it looked shut. This must be a recognised problem because they have a sign outside asking you to come in because “we are open!” Fortunately, eagle-eyed Mrs H spotted the sign. The village of Hurworth is utterly charming and the cafe has a lovely atmosphere with a mix of clientele, some people coming for lunch while others meet for a chat or to catch up with some stuff on their laptops. We just had tea, coffee and scones, all of which were top notch, as was the service. This is a lovely place and, having marked it on the car map (I’m old fashioned sometimes!) we will certainly return whenever we are in the area.

A lovely little cafe. Adhering to all social distancing guidelines. Table service, tables spread apart. Food for all, homemade, lovely fresh bread for sandwiches and soup straight from the local bakery each day. A great find for no nonsense hearty sandwiches, jacket potatos, soups and cakes. Only one person serving when we went but he ran around and looked after everyone nicely. It isn't 5 star cuisine, it was better, just nice homemade food, made with local produce.

We popped in at 3 o clock, while checking contents of display cabinet were advised by Young man behind counter they didn't usually cook dinner at this time because they shut at 4. Asked if it was ok to have some quiche and a pie told that was fine but what did we want to go with it? Asked him to just add whatever was easiest . Food and drinks were brought to our table without any exchange. Had to wait to pay while he dragged himself away from table where he was chatting to two ladies No intention of a return visit even though the food was quite nice.

Good to return to the Mustard Tree after a 2-year absence. Love the comfortable surroundings and was impressed with the outside space at the rear which is a recent addition, although we didn’t sit there. 2 bacon sandwiches and 2 teas came to over £11, which I consider a tad expensive, but the bread was first class, bulging with meat and very enjoyable. The only minus point was the length of time we had to wait for the food. The cafe wasn’t busy at all, so hard to understand why this was. Customers with less time to hang about would find this a problem, I’m sure.

When it was proposed that the Methodist Church should also become a neighbourhood cafe there were some doubters but not now. Inspired by their Minister this real asset to the Village and Treasure of a facility has shown what can be done given the right ideas. The Coffees are popular but there is tea and other drinks as well. The Cakes and Scones are fresh and delicious. The meals which include Soups, Quiches, Other savoury dishes, baked potatoes and salads are freshly prepared. Wednesday lunchtime there is a special menu at a special rate and this is a very popular event. Not only a lively cafe but other activities co-exist - knitting groups, sewing groups - I could go on - it is just a happy, warm friendly place - perhaps this is what a Church should be - a vibrant Centre for the Community and there are still services on a Sunday.

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor I suggested to my colleague that we try it for a 'working' breakfast. We had the full breakfast and both enjoyed it bringing a contented smile to our faces. The meal was well cooked and very tasty. Even the toast was above standard being made with proper bread and served with a great local butter. This may have been our first visit but it certainly will not be our last!

I cannot praise this cafe enough, I live in the village and myself, friends and my children spend loads of time there. It is so family friendly, there is a play area for the children to play in, close to the tables so you can keep on eye on them. The food and drinks are lovely and the staff are amazing, so friendly and nothing is too much. They do often get busy but that is because they are so good, it’s worth the wait. It is also unique in that it is set in a Methodist Church that is still used as a church but cleverly used as a community cafe during times that it is not used as a church. After you have visited, you will wish you had a cafe like this local to you!

This cafe seems to be a hub for the commuity. It's a converted chapel which makes the best use of the space. (It has an adjoining room where a variety of activities/clubs take place like pilates). In the cafe each table had fresh flowers on them. It really is a lovely light and airy space. We just had a coffee each. It was excellent, great flavour and not too weak. On the doorstep, so regularly call in for coffee and poached eggs. It has a warm friendly atmosphere with a unique charm as it shares the facility with the methodist church. It's a meeting point for all; families, friends, business folk and has begun to attract cyclists who always know good 'cake & coffee' stops. Staff are very welcoming, always smiling and will engage in conversations about everything and anything. Menu not as comprehensive as other cafes but I see that as a good thing due to the quality of food served.

Today, I was served by 2 smart and attentive young men, who lifted my spirits as they reminded me so much of my son and it was lovely to see people with different abilities having a place to work, demonstrate their skills and do it so brilliantly!! Lovely little cafe. Very reasonably priced. The gentleman that served us was very quick and helpful. There is changing facilities for children, highchairs, a really cute motorbike rocking horse and a standard rocking horse so a few things to keep little ones busy whilst you finish your meal. They also have decaf tea, perfect for a breastfeeding mama. Oh yeah and they offer a mammoth breakfast, 4 bacon, 4 sausage, 4 eggs, 4 black pudding, fried bread, toast, beans, tomatoes etc for under a tenner. I didn't order it but I imagine it would be incredible and a great hangover cure. Please leave me a helpful vote if you found this review useful.
