Visited the comet the other evening, and What an absolute gem this pub is. The owners Peter and Leslie were terrific and so friendly and helpful, even giving the locals complimentary snacks, the pub itself is in an old coaching Inn and Leslie has transformed the interior with countless interesting ornaments from old rocking horses to an Alice through the looking glass theme, there's far too much to mention, the wine, spirits and beer list is very good and extensive to meet all tastes. Do yourselves a favour and visit this lovely old pub, Thanks very much Peter and Leslie we had a great evening

We celebrated our Golden Wedding here at The Comet last week and the buffet Lesley provided was superb and we received many compliments on the food and venue. Nothing was too much trouble and Lesley and Peter decorated the pub with a banner and balloons for us. We would highly recommend any function here. Thank you Lesley and Peter for making our day extra special.

The Comet is the place to visit for Sunday Lunch, Leslie and Peter put on a Sunday Lunch with all the normal Sunday Roasts plus a number of specials. The place is filled with many objects and is quite bizarre but fascinating. If you are thinking of going I would recommend that you ring and book as it is so popular with diners who have become regulars as the food is so good. The staff are so friendly and attentive serving everyone.

First visit for us and some friends for a very long time and we were not disappointed. Quiz night on Saturday and the place was almost full but the landlady was very accommodating in getting us a table. The beers are really good, recommend the Raby Ale, and there are plenty of others to choose. The decor is clearly a lifetime collection of all sorts which add to the atmosphere. We will definitely return. The quiz was excellent by the way, great questions and well managed.

We arrived on Sunday, hoping to get something to eat, told we had to book for a meal, this place is closed, Tuesday and Wednesday, only serves food on a Friday, Saturday night and Sunday lunch, nothing advertised that this is what they do, it’s quite small. But to be fair, it was very busy on the Sunday lunch time, I just think they need to update their website details. Everything we had seen that was coming out of the kitchen, looked piping hot and smelled delicious, we wish we could have tried it, they would do a good trade as the Croft hotel’s food is not good at all.

Went with some friends for an evening meal. There was some issue about us getting a table although the dining area was almost empty. We were given a table in the end and the food was good. There were NO vegetarian options on the blackboard and we had to ask and they made a pasta dish. I hate having to ask for vegetarian meals as it makes you feel awkward and a ‘special case’. A good range of beers and cask ales. Decor a bit overwhelming, every space filled with stuff. I would hesitate to go back here due to the initial resistance to our wanting to eat even though it was only 6:30pm and they advertise food service until 8pm.

This pub is a bit off the beaten track - but in a very nice location next to the bridge and river near Croft. Very nice location - and the pub has real character. I went with family for Sunday dinner - having been several times before. The décor is very strange indeed - latterly hundreds of items of memorabilia ranging from WW2 stuff, Betty Boo, Marilyn Monroe and there is not an inch of wall not covered. Heaven knows how they clean the place - but hey. My first issue is the seating - you are crammed in like sardines. When someone wants to move from the table next to you - they have no choice but to stick their bum in your face - which is annoying. Secondly - the service!! The staff insist on walking around with a huge " Specials" board - which is the size of a sandwich board - and knocking into everything in their path. The serving staff also need to be constantly reminded about simple requests - sauces, salt and pepper....etc The food is quite nice. The meat is tender and the portions generous - though I felt there were not enough veg. It is £8.00 for a Sunday dinner - and deserts are around £5. This is fair in my judgement. There needs to be improvements - but it is a perfectly nice location for a Sunday dinner

Well just had a fantastic family meal at the Comet. We don't live local any longer but the sister in law arranged this meal out for all 11, yes eleven which is always a struggle to get booked in. Atmosphere is warm and friendly staff attentive and will to help. We have a couple of fussy eaters so this can be a issue when we go out but this was not the case here.Food was all served timely and very tasty lots of choice as well. A number of us had the Sunday roast which is excellent and very generous portions and my wife can recommend the ginger pudding, apparently this is one of the best she's tasted. The prices are very reasonable as well compared to a lot of other chain restaurants which this is not.So in summary good food, friendly staff and great prices I'd book to make sure you get a table.

Needed an early Sunday Lunch Venue, The Comet is very close to home, we visit less than we did, but it;s known for its good quality homemade food, we also know that if you want Lamb from the Sunday Lunch menu you need to be there for an early talbe, as it sells out quick. We were lucky today ... we had booked early for 12.30, but there had been a mix up and no table had been reserved, it took a good half hour to sort it and get us a table, thankfully despite the mix up in the table bookings, we did get our Lamb, although we probably only just had our order taken in time after the hold up, as it was well after 1 and we had to ask several times to place our order, service was not as good as we have experienced in the past. The food was typical homemade Sunday Lunch, Lamb and veg with mint sauce, massive Yorkshires (bit overdone and dry) plenty of veg for 5, but not hot and just average.

Lots of roasts on offer, unfortunately no lamb which we'd all wanted :( However, all the selections were good, plenty of everything, lots of vegetables and offered more too, Yorkshire puds were overdone, but there was plenty of everything else to fill all the party up. Desserts were all the old favorites. No one was disappointed and it was a lovely atmosphere to share a few hours with the family and for me just a treat not spending the whole day in the kitchen on a Sunday. Friends recommended this pub/restaurant so we two couples arrived without notice last Thursday evening for drinks followed by supper. Food was fantastic and such good value for money. As we live locally, we four amigos will definitely be returning.

I last visited this pub a few years ago when the interior decor was basic and austere, matching the exterior. It could hardly have changed more inside - the central area with the bar has armchairs and loads of decorations/ornaments. The area to the right has a few tables, more decor and bookshelves with old books. To the left is a dining room, again furnished in a homely retro fashion. No attempt is made to compete with the nearby fine dining establishments of Rockliffe Hall and The Bay Horse. This is basic pub grub, well cooked, served by friendly staff and reasonably priced. A decent choice of beers. Well worth trying - but note limited food serving times Thurs to Sat lunch and evening and Sunday lunch

I know I recently wrote a review for this establishment, but I feel I must tell you all how well we were looked after the other day.my brother in law & partner were visiting from down south & we wanted to take them there,we booked late Sat,after they normally stopped serving & they cooked up a wonderful meal for all of us!! The steak & ale pie together with fish & chips went down very well with our visitors.my husband & I each had half a roast chicken!! We were all suitably stuffed!!We returned a matter of days later for our pie & fish,my husband stated it was the best pie he ever had,he thought there was half a cow in it in a fantastic gravy!!

When you walk in to here it doesn't feel like a pub, it feels like nanas front room, you instantly feel comfortable. The staff are great and food is cooked to order, salads fresh, drinks prices reasonable, I will definitely be returning and recommending to others.

I'll agree with the others about the look of the pub, its jam packed with statues ornaments and pictures, but its cosy and quaint. The food was very very good, well worth fitting a dessert in.It was however very difficult to book a table. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday and require 24 hours notice, but with no website there is no way of knowing this.

Definitely the strangest pub we've ever been to(the resident teddy boy just finished it off) & think it's great cos of it,can't understand previous review as we both had fish & chips on a groupon offer & were expecting a smaller portion as a result, however we recieved more than adequate portions & were even asked if we needed more chips.the staff were most friendly & efficient.we would certainly go again

As previous reviewers have described, this place is quirky and interesting to look around. This was my first visit and my husband and I ordered fish and chips. A couple next to us ordered just before us and when we saw the fish and chips that were served to them we thought we had made a good choice. However, when our plates came out we were dismayed to see that we had been served what could only be described as a child's portion. The fish was only 3 to 4 inch square with a spoonful of chips. We asked the waitress why we had only received half portions as there was only one size on the menu for £7.95 and we just got a shrug. Another chap was served his fish and chips and received a decent portion. A further couple ordered and were served child's portions too, which they complained about and again no sign of management, just an embarrassed waitress. I can only work out that normal portions are served to regulars and that the tiny portions are kept for new diners - a strange way to encourage new customers! For £7.95 the meal was a complete rip off.

You know when you walk into one of those antique shops that seems to be full of everything you can imagine and some you never thought of? Well this pub gave me the same feeing! I like it. Betty Boo has pride of place on the bar. Old crooners sang while I ate my very ample steak and ale pie. It was clearly home made with real steak and a lovely light pastry. Veg was served on the side as was the extra gravy I was offered. I thoroughly enjoyed that meal and all the staff couldn't do enough to make my experience 'top hat'. To top it all they serve 'White Boar' real ale and that too made me happy as it was only £3 per pint. All in all I am very happy with this place and will bring the kids for some real home cooking at a very reasonable price.

This pub is definitely different.. A lot of curios and nostalgia makes for a fascinating quiet drink, my husband and I were so amazed by all the Marilyn Monroe and 50's memorabilia we were quite quiet for a while! Good service, friendly staff, shame there isn't more of an established outdoor area
