Booked a couple of nights B&B following a previous visit to the pub in 2022. The proprietors and staff were attentive and engaging. The ambience, location, accommodation and cuisine first class. Will definitely recommend.

We visited have been many years ago. We wanted a relaxed, easy going place to eat and it was all those things. The owners were the same which was lovely. They have stuck to their values of traditional country pub. Their website says it’s not a gastro pub and it isn’t which suits us down to the ground. The hosts were very friendly and hospitable, wandering around and chatting with customers. Food came in good time. Menu is traditional. We even spied a plastic basket which presumably had scampi and chips in it. We’d been reminiscing about these a couple of weeks before. The drinks were good, the staff were all so very friendly and helpful. We weren’t made to feel like outsiders even though we are not regulars. My husband said his food was just right ( he had fish). My only disappointment was that I chose steak and ale pie over steak and kidney pie because I don’t like kidneys. My husband and I could both taste kidney in the pie. Also it had one of those annoying puff pastry lids hovering on top of the meat. I’m not a fan of this. I wouldn’t have this dish again. Otherwise, all refreshingly pubby, friendly and not at all pretentious!

We stay close to Crewkerne once a year for a week of peace & quiet (live in a lively tourist area!) & visiting this pub is a must for us. We booked in for a Sunday lunch first, which was as enjoyable as ever, loads of fresh veg, decent thick slices of pork for me (apple sauce provided) & thick slices of well cooked beef (just how we like it) for the other half, plus friendly chats with another couple having their lunch. We visited again on the following Thursday, and this time opted for the 2 x rump steaks with all the trimmings, for £26 (bargain, bargain, bargain!) - sorry if it offends folk, but we like our steaks well done, with that lovely griddled taste. It was perfect. My husband enjoyed the real ale too. The owners are friendly, love chatting with them both & really wish we lived nearer for the special 90th Birthday next July!

We had looked this place up online..we live nearby, so wanted to give it a try and support local businesses. The outside looked promising. Traditional pub in a nice village. Going inside we noticed straight away how dark and gloomy it was. The decor was very tired and very grubby. Not a great first impression, still, wanted to give it a fair go. The man behind the bar pretty much ignored us, he had a peculiar manner. Made us feel uncomfortable as though we were somehow interrupting him. The place wasn’t very busy. He was abrupt and unfriendly. We ordered our drinks. There were two choices of Sunday roast, pork or beef. We chose the pork. He went off to the kitchen and came back declaring the pork was finished. As we had been given our drinks we felt we had to stay, so opted for the beef. I asked him what is the beef like..he said it’s cooked…idiot. He said the beef would be like nothing you have ever tasted before…I really took a dislike to him but we were a bit stuck having no where else to get a Sunday roast at this point. We sat down and waited. The tables, carpet, walls were all rather tired and dirty. I had a bad feeling about this. But you never know, the food could be marvellous. Two plates of lunch arrived relatively quickly. The food was spilling over the small plates..stacked high with every veg and two slabs of beef. It looked like something my granny would have served up. Swimming in gravy. Some of the veg was cold, some hot, most of it was stewed and all of it was so salty it was inedible. The beef was as tough as old farmers boots and it was grey. We tried to eat some of it..but gave up. It was the worst Sunday roast we have ever been served. Absolutely vile. We left the food and our drinks. My husband paid and we left. On leaving I told him how disappointed we were and how unhappy we were but he couldn’t have cared less. I then told him he was right about the beef..I have never tasted anything like it..so bad that I had wrapped it in a napkin to take home for my dog. People..do not go to this pub..it is a complete joke, nasty, grubby, unfriendly…a real disgrace.

We loved this pub. It was our kind of pub, and the food was amazing! The Prawn Cocktail starters had more prawns than it did the salad, which was refreshingly pleasant, as it is usually the other way around in many of the pubs these days. My choice of mains was the cheese Ploughman's, and my goodness was it good! Huge helpings of everything, especially the cheese, which consisted of Stilton, Brie and cheddar. This was all accompanied by a huge salad, 5 or 6 of the best-tasting pickled onions ever, a generous helping of sweet pickles and tasty warm bread. I was even given 4 patties of butter! The last time I had a Ploughman’s at a different pub, I had to ask for butter! We also loved the banter and no-nonsense approach from the landlord. What a great find. We’ll definitely be back for more of this pub’s delicious food when we are back in Somerset!

Bank Holiday Monday & many pub/restaurant/cafes were shut. But what a find in the Muddled Man! Fish & chips & a wonderful steak & kidney pie; large portions, excellent meat in the pie all eaten in a lovely garden surrounded by flowers & with a view of exuberant window boxes. You can tell when a pie is home made with good ingredients. (They admitted the pastry top was not home made - that's excusable) An excellent pub lunch but, as the landlord & website stress, not a gastropub, but a village no nonsense pub. As it's in a village nearby, we will visit again. Thank you, again, for our excellent lunch.

My partner and I stopped for lunch, I ordered the chicken and mushroom pie, and my partner the pork loin. The filling for the pie was a slurry of peas, carrots, mushrooms and not many pieces of shredded chicken. The mushrooms were ok. The pork loin was tough to the point of being hard to cut! There was a good selection of steaks to order and maybe that’s their speciality and I chose badly. Won’t be visiting again! The landlord intimated this was just a pub not a restaurant! The landlord was very friendly however. The rating on trip advisor brought us to this pub???

It was reading the reviews that made me phone & see if we could be squeezed in for a Sunday lunch on our recent weeks cottage holiday nearby. Especially those who seemed to have no sense of humour! Squeezed in we were - it was packed! The food, cooked by "pops" (sorry, I missed your first name, but your son, Gary called you pops - who is soon to be 88, was superb - served on plates, not a roof slate or a wooden board in sight! It's what I would call a proper pub. A beer garden, TV with sports on in one corner, locals greeting each other and a smiling waitress, who I guess puts up with a lot!! Back to Sundays lunch - we chose roast beef & all the trimmings - cooked perfectly, as were all the many vegetables - some may like to crunch on carrots & green beans - not us! We like them cooked just right, & the cauliflower cheese was extremely tasty too. We booked straight away for Wednesday evening - loved the camaraderie between owners & locals, & had a lovely chat with Gary too. We both chose the steaks this time, we are outcasts by most chefs, as we like our steaks cooked - no about to walk off the plate - medium to well done suits us fine, & once again, superb! All the trimmings, with a choice of two French mustards (sorry Gary, couldn't resist that!). We've rebooked our holiday cottage, but not April this time, September 2023 - where I shall be pleased to enjoy a Birthday meal at The Muddled Man!!

The people on here clutching their pearls at the banter need to lighten up. It was good fun, and exactly how it should be. We had a good laugh with the landlord and his old fella. A choice of either pork or beef keeps life simple and ensures quality on each plate (small or large) every time. Many regulars are on first name terms with Gary having the ears of a lion and able to contribute, often with humour or 'low down' on what ever the topic is. Real fun! Weekday 'steak nights' and Fish and Chips on Fridays are well supported as portions are geneous. Tradional puds are huge and to die for too! Prices are very affordable.Tables are close - even cosy - but all rub along in a frendly atmosphere. The bar has some local draught brews, and extensive whisky selection, gins and rare rums.

Two of us had the fresh fish of the day,a huge bit of battered cod (local caught in West bay). With a very large 3 egg mushroom omelette and a big jacket potato and filling both with a good salad the bill with two rounds of drinks came to £45. It is a long time since I ate here but as always I was made as welcome as ever. The beers are exceptionally well kept with three real ales regularly changing.. This is not a gastro pub but serves generous portions of good honest pub food. From Monday to Thursday's a wide variety of locally produced steaks are offered in various sizes. My 8oz fillet was served with chips, peas, garlicky mushrooms and a mountain of scald. I could have had a 10 or 12 oz one but that would have been too much for me.

Eating out on a Monday night never offers much choice but we found The Muddled Man and gave it a try. The welcome was excellent from dad who was chatty and has a very dry sense of humour, our dog was very welcome in the garden and made a fuss of. We ordered 2 rump steaks and the portions were generous and the price very reasonable indeed, my wifes steak she said was very good but mine was not all that brilliant with some of it inedible, I did not complain as the meals were cost under £20 for both and I enjoyed every other aspect of our evening there including chatting to some friendly locals. My low rating is based only on the poor steak, if you have a special steak board menu they need to be up to a good standard but that is your butchers fault, the service and friendliness cannot be faulted.

Visited here with some friends for a pub lunch, was the strangest place with a strange team running it. Menu said something along the lines of where not a gastropub so don't expect gastropub food. After ordering our food they yelled into the kitchen, we will be alright it's simple! We decided to eat outside as it was a nice day but they had set a table inside and seemed a bit put out. Food was ok not terrible. We stayed on for a while but we were moved on so the landlord could mow the lawn. Toilets were also pretty grim. Not somewhere I would return to

Went there for Sunday lunch and came out at teatime!. Yes, it really was that good. Beef, Lamb or Pork as the set dish either normal or grandee. We went for the grandee pork and it was superb. Great reception, great atmosphere and great food and good selection of ales and ciders. What more can you ask for. We will be going back soon for a dinner.

Went to a birthday celebration meal for about 40. Gary made us very welcome and the organisation of the food, table clearing and general running was excellent. The buffet was super - particularly the salmon with new buttery potatoes and salad all beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Only things that could make it better, being really picky would be colourful hanging baskets and an updated disabled toilet. I look forward to returning in the not too distant future.

Myself and partner stayed here for one night, as we were attending a wedding close by, we are so glad we chose to stay here, we have found ourselves a traditional country pub with what we describe as real people. The pub is full of character and quirkiness, the landlord welcomed us in as if we were his own locals and charmed us with his terrific sense of humour...his lovely wife and son also so welcoming. They have a brilliant selection of ales and ciders and spirits alike...we didn't eat here in evening as we attended a wedding but the menu looked very traditional, everything homemade with a vast steak range as well... the room we stayed in was very comfortable with a modern ensuite, we were served a full English breakfast in the morning which was very tasty, great service from the lovely landlady who was very attentive, we will definitely return!

Good pint and good food. Good conversation. Frequented by locals who are happy to chat to you at the bar. Skittle alley in use for regular matches against other local teams. A number of charities benefit from raffles and events held in the pub. Very pleasant garden area to sit in on sunny days. This family run establishment takes a bit of getting used to due to their sense of humour and sometimes their 'laid back' attitude to service.

On arrival the host and his son provided endless conversational one liners, being too short and general old fashioned slap and tickle banter. To some this may have come across as rude, it was simply village life and far nicer we thought than being watched on arrival as the "visitors" and not welcomed (as can be the case in these types of pubs). Menu was typically British however there was a vast steak menu with special offers which we chose to dine from. A slightly slow service but when the steaks arrived they were worth every penny and minute waited. Kids menu could be extended to one option without chips, pizza and garlic bread or macaroni cheese as a suggestion. Good meal and value for money, With this sort of quirky hospitality you won't forget your visit.

Four of us went for a meal.On arrival the landlord seemed to find amusement in the fact that I am very short ? Surely I left that behind in when I left school some 30+ years ago ?What was that all about ? The food was good "pub grub", ok really. But just a bit of an odd experience and one we will not be encountering again.

The Muddled Man is a lovely old family-run traditional pub in the small Somerset village of West Chinnock. Warm hospitality and comfortable rooms with modern ensuite bathrooms. The bar offers good home-cooked food and CAMRA endorsed real ales such as Wills Neck from Quantock Brewery and Gorge Best from Cheddar Ales. Also local ciders are on offer including farm pressed Burrow Hill (well recommended). Huge full English breakfast served in the cosy pub. In some ways it could pass as a film set for the series "Heartbeat", old fashioned in the best sense of the phrase. Prices start at £35 Per Person for Bed and full English Breakfast, which is excellent value.

Today I made one of my occasional visits to the Muddled Man. As you might expect this is a rather quirky establishment that thrives on humour. The welcome is warm and informal but nevertheless very genuine. The landlord only buys his beers direct from the brewery rather than thorough a wholesaler. This ensures that he gets it fresh and can mature it until he judges it to be ready to sell. The result is and excellent pint with a choice of three or more. He scores a well deserved Casque Mark for his beer. The locals are also very friendly and at times there is hilarious banter from them.As well as the locals people come here from further afield for the good basic unpretentious food served in large portions. I had a good ten ounce filet steak served with a plateful of excellent chips, salad, onion rings, peas and garlicky mushrooms. I had no room for a dessert. Warmly recommended.

Welcoming Landlord and staff, friendly locals and excellent food. So much so, that we ate here 3 times in one week! We were staying in a cottage just up the road with the intention of self-catering but after our first visit, we felt compelled to visit again .....and again! Traditional pub food, cooked on the premises. We can recommend the beef or chicken pies, the home-made burgers, steak (there's a huge range to choose from) and gammon. The portion sizes were just right too! This is a village pub that serves lovely home cooked food. It certainly isn't a gastropub nor is it a restaurant, if that's what you want then head into town, as this isn't the pub for you. However, it was the pub for us! It's a shame Suffolk is so far away! ;-)

We chose The Muddled Man as a meeting point half-way'ish between Weston-Super-Mare and Christchurch. It is set in the lovely quiet hamlet of West Chinnock just outside Crewkerne. Parking is on the road but it is not a problem as there is so little traffic. The pub has a grassed area with bench tables and the small bar is given over to a dining area and a comfortable sitting area. The food is typically straight forward pub food - good portions and good value for money. Really good point is that it's all freshly cooked and items are amended to take care of allergies etc. For example, the owner/chef cooked gluten-free onion rings for one of our daughters. Children's portions are also available. On Sunday's they just provide roast dinners. Service is efficient, but as everything is freshly cooked you will not be able to rush in and out. The idea is that you take your time, relax and talk to your companions or anybody else for that matter.Mine host is very friendly and chatty and makes you feel very welcome. We enjoyed the food, the ambiance and the experience. Highly recommended.

The Muddled Man in West Chinnock to the north of Crewkerne:-If you are looking for a'la carte dining this is not the place for you. If you are looking for good simple pub food that fills you up and satisfies, then the Muddled man is for you!I have visited about seven times now and have never been dissapointed.I visited with friends back in June, and we were entertained by a local sports event patronised by people who were enjoying themselves and feeling comepletely at home like we did. The staff are fun and are always up for a natter. The pub is a beautiful Ham stone structure with leaded windows and dark wood interior around the bar which is small but crammed with interesting bottles and all the usual favourite libations as well as several guest ales and the odd Cider for the enthusiast. There is a nook by the bar with comfy arm chairs and a garden that allows you to take in the period masnary and its gorgeous golden hues. The Muddled man is good for lunches if you are walking as West Chinnock is close to several well established footpaths and bridleways.

What a little gem. Have recently moved into the area I first went here to a quiz night. The food served up then made me want to try out the main menu. So I went back a couple of weeks later with my husband and we had the whitebait starter ( a meal in itself) and two steaks. As it was a week night we had the meal deal for £16.50 for two. Absolutely delicious. It was so good I took my son and daughter and their respective partners back for a Saturday night meal. Same quality, same service. Needless to say we will be going back again in the very near future.

My partner and I have just returned from a week in Somerset. We stayed just down the road from The Muddled Man, we had our first lunch there and we got such a friendly welcome that we knew we would be going back, which as it happened was the next day for a Sunday lunch, our food was excellent as was the service, and Aunties crumble was simply the best!! I would recommend Gary's lamb, red wine and mushroom dish, and the pork in Apple and cider, both delicious! The locals were all so friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, on one occasion the crumble wasn't on the menu and when I asked about it before I knew it Auntie had gone to the kitchen and made me my very own dish of crumble! The beer and cider was jolly good too! You don't get that sort of service just anywhere. 1st class Muddled Man. Hope to be back next year. Julie and Adrian from kent.
