What can I say. But omg this is the tastiest afternoon tea I have ever had. The Bench. Well you get cottage pie, chicken pie, chips in a basket with battered sausage on top. A large Yorkshire pudding pilled with mash potato a small sausages in. Curry sauce, gravy. Then on the lower half you got your treats, you have all small treats to die for but I saved my favourite till last which was the mouth watering apple and cinnamon crumble.

After having to wait over 10mins for someone to come to the bar we were then shown to our table. It then took ages for someone to come take our order. When the food finally arrive it was ok but nothing special (over priced for what you get). When we asked for the bill half hour later it still hadn’t come and we had to go to the bar only to see the waitress we had asked for the bill from to just be standing chatting.

We went to eat on Friday evening. We were seated and served drinks very quickly even though it was fairly busy with several large parties in. The menu was extensive and there were several options that appealed. In the end we all opted for grills - mixed grill & gammon. When the meals came, they were huge! The food was of fantastic quality, all served with delicious chips, a dressed salad and onion rings. Unfortunately no room for a dessert though! We will definitely return at a later date.

Went here for an evening meal, it was not very busy the service was very slow we wait half an hour for somebody to take our order. I asked for new potatoes and received chips. The meal when eventually it did arrive was poor to say the least. The staff attitude was virgin on arrogant. We will not be visiting here again which is a shame as it is walking distance.

I went with my daughter for Sunday lunch today and it was fabulous. Even though we were quite late and coming to the end as it was approaching 4pm, fresh meat and veg were being replaced which is not the case in most carvery restaurants.

I visited the Mountain Gate recently when it had changed hands. The service was poor. It was explained that all the staff were in the process of bring trained. I thought I would try again. We waited nearly an hour for our food. When we finished our main course our plates were not cleared, we were not invited to see the dessert menu or asked if we would like any coffee or presented with the bill. When we went to pay the bill the three staff members on duty were sat/stood at the bar. The food was good but that doesn't make up for the extremely poor service. I will not be returning again.

Went with my husband last night. King prawn starter was amazing, the garlic butter was gorgeous. Had lamb rump main, the lamb was beautiful and the flavour was good the lamb was sublime. Couldn't manage a desert as we were so full.

We decided to visit the mountain gate as we are local and had heard very mixed reviews since its reopening. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. When we arrived the waitress took our drinks order, brought us our drinks then we didn't see her again. 30 minutes went passed until a member of our party went up to the bar where we were told to "just help ourselves to the carvery". There was only approx another 5 tables there so it wasn't busy. Unfortunately the carvery was one of the worst ones we've ever had and we all left most of it. In fairness the turkey was nice but that was about it. The gravy had a weird taste and was very watery but everything else was SOAKED in oil :( after leaving most of our food we had to wait another 30 minutes for the waitress to bring us our bill. I completely agree with other comments that the service is very relax and there doesn't seen to be a front of house to direct the experienced staff.

Pleasantly surprised, quite busy but we had booked a table, a group of us and impressed that tables were called up in turn so no big queues. All the food looked appetising and a nice touch that the desserts are also on show. Dissapointed that the plates were cold in the plate warmer but asked a chef for a hot plate and he brought one immediately and apologised. The food was delicious, all the meats were tender and there was a good choice of vegetables

Decided to try here after reading the good reviews,so took my mum for a birthday lunch.Sowed to our booked table and asked what drinks we wanted,asked for 2 glasses of Zinfandel and 3 pints.Waitres returned no Zinfandel ok 2 glasses rose wine,barman returned sorry only sell rose by the bottle.We then decided on our main meals 2 scampi 1 curry 1 lasagne 1 chilli.The 2 scampi were fine can’t really go wrong with something out of a packet.The lasagne was like burned stodge that needed a chisel to peel it away from sides of the dish.Curry tasteless could have been chicken in some yellow sauce and the chilli only resembled chilli because it had kidney beans in it think they forgot to put the chilli in.Did tell the waitress but to no avail Everybody were more concerned In putting decorations up in the other room ready for breakfast with Santa.Totally disastrous experience which wasn’t cheap either.

After recently reopening we were very excited to try here again. I rang to book a table at lunchtime which they said was not a problem but they we had to be very precise with the time as “the chef needs to know or il have a row” he said, I found this a bit odd. We arrived took a while to be seated and when we were shown our table the waitress asked if we had booked or just walked in as she need to tell the chef - again very odd. We tried to enquire with the waitress about various things on the menu but she just kept saying she didn’t know. We ordered and waited 40 mins for our food to arrive we had a toddler with us who was getting restless so she asked if I would like bread and butter to keep him going as food was going to be another 10 mins. When the bread arrived I couldn’t even give my son any as the butter was like a lump of ice! We had ham and chips and pulled pork burger. The chips were underdone and the pulled pork burger very watery, the bun was soggy and it just dripped out whenever I took a bite. The ham was very jelly-ish and chewy. All in all not a great experience. Understandably newly opened restaurants have teething problems but it really was a disappointment today.

Me and a friend visited this establishment after a meeting, we were greeted politely and staff were very friendly, we picked what we wanted, we waited 25 minutes for our food to arrive even though the restaurant was practically empty, I ordered the chicken off the alacarte menu and my friend chose chicken from the lunch menu, when food eventually arrived, my friends portion was 2 times the size of my portion and I payed £5 extra, I don't understand how this could be.

We often have lunch at the Mountain Gate and their 2 course lunch is very reasonable at under £11, with a great choice of starters and mains!! I always have the steak with blue cheese and mushroom sauce and home made chips and it's delicious!!We recently had our evening wedding party at the Mountain Gate, following our wedding abroad, and could not thank Rachel and the staff enough for their first class service on the night. Everything was perfect...and the buffet was great!! They have really nice rooms upstairs too! We're lucky to have such a lovely restaurant right on our doorstep and look forward to our next visit!

Firstly, I find it quite amusing that there are no responses from the Management to the concerns that people have raised on TA, perhaps that speaks for itself? Any way, being a bank holiday, we decided to treat ourselves to lunch. We opted for their lunch time special two course. Before I continue, I would like to say that the two waiting staff were very polite. It states, in fairness, that all food is cooked to order and should you not have a starter, there will be a 20 minute wait for your main. My hubby had the seafood fishcake and I had the baked field mushrooms. We waited a reasonable time and when they arrived, we were shocked at the size of the portions. A child would eat more. The fishcake was lacking in seasoning and ate extremely lightly, without any depth of flavour or texture. The baked field mushrooms (plural) could not be seen for the 'forest' of greenery heavily drizzled with a balsamic glaze. The mushrooms consisted of ONE small flat mushroom and I do mean small, with tiny pieces of chopped mushroom on top. This was supposed to have been in a tarragon sauce, but the balsamic had completely engulfed the flavour of the dish. This starter on it's own was £5.25 which is outrageous, as I quietly commented to our waiter "this is Wales, not London". He apologised and said he would tell the Manager. Now, whether he did not or the Manager simply was not concerned, the was no comment or action on behalf of them. We waited well over the 20 minutes for our fish for our main and this was in addition to waiting for our starter and eating it. We asked where our main course was, and was assured it was just being plated up. Sure enough, it did arrive shortly, and whilst the batter was crispy, it was also greasy and overcooked. All in all, we will not be returning. I intend to also put this on Facebook. You cannot pretend that you are an up-market bistro type/gastro-pub hotel, with a service and food that are pretentious enough not to provide customers with value for money. By all means, charge £5.25 for a mushroom starter, but, ensure that you supply a sensible portion, dressed well but not to the detriment of the dish. Customers will enjoy it and remember it, for the RIGHT reasons!!!!

We stayed here for a wedding near by,the food took over an hour to arrive,but was worth the wait .the staff are pleasant and help full,12o clock we were ask to leave down stairs so we. Had to go to bed,2oclock there party started,(we were it invited to)the noise was shocking running up and down stairs ,doors banging ,girls screaming,laughing,3oclock my husband opened the door just as one of the girls was running up stairs,he asked if she new the time ,to which she said no and ran back down, We decided to leave the next morning ,but there were NO staff on the premises until 10.30 where I complained,and was told ,o dear I know who that was ?."...One last moan breakfast outside our room the night before porridge,,,in a packet,,,So if you want a good night sleep ,with staff on duty all night DONT stay here

One of our party ordered the "Roasted beet root with Goats cheese salad". What he was served was a side salad without any roasted beet root or goats cheese! The waiter took it back and returned exactly the same salad with some chopped pickled beet root from a jar and goats cheese thrown on top. Another of our party asked for a fried egg with his steak....steak arrived minus the fried egg. For my main I ordered the pork tenderloin stuffed with Welsh Brie. The tenderloin was very nice..but no Welsh Brie! "It's melted into the meat" we were told. It hadn't melted so much as completely vanished taking all of it's flavour with it. I ordered spiced apple cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert which arrived minus the ice cream. I assume this poor service is not unusual as despite some of the positive feedback on here,there were only two other tables eating the whole time we were there from 7pm until approx 10pm on a Saturday night. By way of an explanation we were told it was an apprentice chef!!

We recently attended my sons wedding at mountain gate (24 April). The venue was lovely with a nice room for the service and then a separate larger room for the festivities. The staff could not have done enough for us especially Andrea who spent much of her day making sure everything was perfect from helping pin button holes first thing to arranging a taxi at midnight- she was always there.The food was very tasty, served quickly and hot. Friendly and efficient welcome into a warm comfortable dining area. Newly refurbished. Good limited lunch time menu, At reasonable price. Value for money. However the sweets let them down. For instance, the apple chesecake had no Apple flvour and seemed mass produced and not home made. Other options were by and large dissapointing. However the overall experience was enjoyable with the notable exception of the background music. We were subjected to repetative male tenor songs. The cd or MP3 was repeated over and over again at much too loud volume. What a pity. My well return and hope that by then they will have bought another cd and found the volume nob.

Our grandson had been staying with us for the easter break & this was his last night with us before returning home to dorset on the weekend.So we wanted to take him out to celebrate his time with us. We have eaten here in the past and have had enjoyable meals in the past.We felt last nights experience was much improved with the new menu selection.The food has always been good but was probably limited in its choice previously.We had mussels in a tai sauce to start also beetroot and goats cheese in a balsamic vinegar(the goats cheese was delicious) Smoked salmon and crayfish all were well presented and tasy.Followed by chicken forester( consisting of wild mushroom and a potato Rosti) and seasonal vegAnd salmon all were deliciousThe staff were very welcoming and informative.The service was excellent.The only negative for Friday evening was it was a little quiet may be for some ,but in our book that's a positive to us.We felt that some of the reviews on here were not a true representation of the recent experience we had from the a la carte menu. We will certainly be returning. We also felt it was very reasonably priced for a Friday evening starters from £5.00 to £8.95 & mains from £9 up to £21.00They also have a very good website,where you can find all the different menus and special evenings and events they have on throughout the year.

I will start with the plus: We had excellent service from our young waitress and other young staff working there, all very friendly and professional. Food was cooked well meaning nothing overcooked just as I like it, carrots were delicious and Yorkshire pudding was lovely too but that is where it ends. Food was tasteless, I had turkey it was like cold cuts from a supermarket but lacking any flavour at all, 3 other people on our table had beef and they said the same and my husband had the tiniest portion of chicken plus it had a big bone in it which made it even smaller, it came with a bacon and leek sauce which he did say was nice but there was only a tiny bit of sauce so he had to put gravy over his vegetables. we had 1 half filled gravy boat between 5 people and a really small portion of mashed sweed enough for 2 people unless you use a teaspoon then it would have served all 5 of us which were all adults. We had 1 baby potato each, the portion of broccoli and colliflour was not enough for everyone so had to ask for extra of nearly everything which I hate doing and I don't think we should have to. We had 2 small roasters which was plenty with the rest of our food but they were tasteless and totally white no colour to them. The gravy was like water and yes you guessed it tasteless. In my opinion if the gravy would have been thicker and tasty it would have really helped the dinner. 4 of us had apple crumble and crème anglaise, I said to them good luck finding the crumble as there was just a sprinkle, couldn't see it and couldn't taste it so was just stewed apple and cinnamon. Got to be honest was quite tasty for just stewed apple but if I knew I was having stewed apple I would have had the cheesecake, to be honest I think it was crushed up digestive biscuit on the top. Another thing we were a table of 5 put on a table for 4, I did phone last minute (2days before) to add another 1 person so couldn't complain but then realised that they could have put another table onto ours as a few tables were not used, we were a little squashed. I want go into the starters as there were issues with those too, we did have a good time because I believe it is the company as well as the food and it wasn't really bad food just tasteless and not a lot of it, could have been worse just put me off going again for mothers day or a Sunday lunch which is a pity because we went there last mothers day and had a fabulous meal from start to finish. I really think the owner needs to start listening to these reviews and doing something about it otherwise he want have a business left. In the past we haven't been able to get a booking for mothers day as it has been so busy and now he cant fill 1 room full of diners. It really would be a shame if he had to close as we have had a fab meal here whether it be lunch or dinner, it is a lovely place to go very warm and welcoming in my opinion anyway.

I know that this restaurant had a bit of a sticky patch but the new cheff and staff together with the owners have pulled together and I think made a job of it. I have been here 4 times for an evening meal lately and I must say that the food was cooked to perfection and was very tasty indeed. Live only a five minute walk away and have only dined here about five times since current owners took over. Were regulars here previously when the quality of the food and the service and value for money were second to none. Not so any more! Were there on Friday 16th Jan, only three other couples there. Mon to Thurs evenings there is a set menu in addition to the a la carte, but not so on weekend. Decided not to have starter but were served bread and butter with our pre dinner drinks, one knife between two.Both ordered the fillet beef medallions and a bottle of red wine (very limited choice). The meal consisted of 3 small medallions of beef, one small fondant potato and three baby carrots £19.99. The waiting staff were very young, only two at front of house serving drinks, taking orders and serving food,lack of training was obvious."give us a shout if you want anything". No dress code, jeans tee shirt, not what you expect from this type of establishment. Only 3 desserts on offer, one being apple crumble, not exactly haute cuisine but pricey at £5. I booked this table several weeks ago for our annual family get together. We were disappointed that our party of 18 people, were expected to sit on two seperate tables. However, staff were quite happy to move the tables together when requested. The starters were acceptable, but as for the main meal... The food was of poor standard to say the least - the cauliflower was brown. I took a photo of it and if possible I would post it for all to see. The carrots were overcooked and the sprouts were of a mushy consistence and tasted of vinegar. Desserts weren't too bad, though.The staff, although pleasant, were young and inexperienced. On the plus side, the dining room was very nice and we felt in no rush to leave. And as it was so nice to get together as a family, we enjoyed the afternoon, despite the poor meal.

Recently attended a Christmas function there. Looks can be deceiving though. Very nice looking hotel but very short of staff and those there were very inexperieced dressed in jeans and shirts with untidy hair except the main waiter who frankly was very rude and not interested in his clients at all. The lack of staff meant a long long wait between courses which when they did arrive were on the cold side and bland. One saving favour was the Chrismas pudding.

Booked this for a special Birthday, Well we all left hungry and the menu descriptions are a hell of a lot better than the food. We all didn't realize that if you are ordering a 12 oz gammon that it seems to shrink a lot in the cooking process and if you order oven cooked chicken, it does not mean that it was cooked in their oven as it was deep fat fried. Chips are not hand cut as they say they were frozen and served that way all 6 or 7 of them per portion. If you order boiled potatoes or garlic bread you will get them served after inquiring where they were as a desert. And some of our party decided to order desert, well no one came to ask if we wanted one or even cleared all of the main course plates. They bring bottles of water to your table for free ( YAY ) in re-seal able form so you get tap water. I would never return here

We stayed here for a private party in October safe to say wouldn't stay here again. Checked in just after 5pm so they had plenty of time to clean! Anyway got into our room and it was filthy looked like it hadn't be cleaned for 6 months certainly hadn't been hoovered we didn't have time to complain or mess about because we had to get ready for the private party we thought we would tell them in the morning. Morning came and we noticed some dead flies by window & bed that was the end for us so we took it upon ourselves to complain to management who by the way called us liars (all he had to do was go up and inspect the room!) they wanted £75 per night for this disgusting room!! If the room had a good polish & hoover it wouldn't have been such a let down I have stayed in cheaper hotels and they've been spotless! Take note Mountain Gate..

We recently stayed at the Mountain Gate for a family wedding and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone as a restaurant, hotel and wedding venue. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, managers and staff. The food in the restaurant the night before, at the wedding breakfast and breakfast the following morning was delicious. It's a beautiful venue in terms of the fact that it's a blank canvass which, when decorated looked beautiful and very elegant. The rooms were great and had everything you need, we had a toddler with us and the room was big enough to fit all the things you need to bring when travelling with a baby. Highlights for us were the staff, the food and the of course the beautiful wedding itself.

Very, very disappointed with the service we received this afternoon at this restaurant. First complaint, had to return dirty wine glass, lipstick on glass. Staff behind bar aged 16, not serving, but ,as far as i am aware not allowed. to be behind bar at that age.The main problem was ths shocking service, due in my opinon, through lack of leadership.There were only 10 guests, the first course for those who had ordered soup, no bread arrived with it, had to remind staff. Nearly an hour later the second course tried to ARRIVE. Three steaks ordered, no chips, by the time the chips arrived some people had finished their main course. Chips then arrived, but not for everyone. Asked to see the manager, was told not available, asked who was in charge, reply " Me I suppose", by one of three young staff, one of which as stated was 16. Staff member then contacted the manager by phone, who passed the phone to the grooms mother, we ended up having a small discount, but sorry to say will not be going there again. The plusses, the food when arrived was good, no complaints there, the venue, very nice & clean. The motto, always have someone in authority i.e. the manager there, do not expect your young staff to take all the complaints, then have to ring the manager to pass the phone over to a customer.

We have celebrated our wedding there with 12 guests in 2013. We have celebrated our 1st anniversary there in 2014 with 10 guests. We live 300 yards away from The Mountain Gate and frequently visit to eat and drink. We have never been served a meal without bowls of chips and veg. None tonight. No manager to speak to. Very young, inexperienced and, frankly, ineffectual waiting staff who looked like rabbits in headlights. A bowl of chips would have prevented this damning review. Do not go to The Mountain Gate. It is expensive, the food is average, and nobody cares about faithful clients. Nobody cares. Go where your hard-earned money is appreciated. Try Y Polyn. Fabulous!

Such a welcoming and friendly hotel!!! I stayed with my family on 27th September to attend my cousins wedding, and from start to finish nothing was too much trouble for this hotel... We all felt very welcome in lovely surroundings. Wedding was beautiful and breakfast was delicious. I definitely recommend this hotel and plan on returning when I visit my family again!

We called in at the Mountain Gate to give something to friends who were eating there and decided to stay for food. We ordered off the lunchtime special menu (two courses for £10). We had garlic mushrooms to start and for the main meal I had a rump steak and my wife had the chicken. The food was very nice and tasty. The steak was tender and the chicken was the best my wife had tasted for a long time. The chips were home made and this is a winner for me every time because I am fed up with cheap frozen chips. The staff were very pleasant and efficient. Yes a very enjoyable dining experience. Will definitely go there again.

Went for the weekday evening menu and the meal was just about OK. I started with the mussels and the best thing about them was the warm, crispy bread! The mussels themselves were the tiniest I had ever seen and the portion was far from generous and included one or two empty and closed shells. My friend had a salad of prawns, mango and papaya and said it was completely tasteless. It did not seem to have any dressing on it and we had to ask for them to bring a vinaigrette to the table. The neck of lamb with a portion of mashed potatoes and some green beans was acceptable but uninteresting. We did not bother with pudding. Unmemorable, unlikely to return.

We visited the Mountain Gate on Friday 12th September for a family members 90th Birthday, we waited an hour and a half for our food (which was okay, but severely over priced) Some of the party didn't have chips and we were told that they had all been brought out and when we asked if we could have more were told that there were no more available and we'd have to have sautee, which okay isn't an issue but when they arrived all meals had been finished. One member of the group didn't even have his meal until we'd all eaten and he'd only ordered pasta, which he explained as medioca and was still hungry afterwards as the portion size was small. All in all none of the 18 in the group will be returning and i will be telling my friends all about my experience.

We decided to go to the Mountain Gate for lunch, and glad we did. What a lovely meal. We hadn't, been there before and had not read any reviews before going. I pass that way once a month and thought that we would give it a try. We were greeted by a young girl who was very polite and friendly. The service through out the meal was good, and the food was delicious, compliments to the chef. We had the garlic mushrooms to start, and then the fish of the day which was cod, which just melted in your mouth and the batter was so light and not full of fat or oil. We look forward to trying the rest of the menu and will certainly be returning.

For shame on you. The food is second to none and I have enjoy every meal so feel obligated to give 3 stars (letdown only by the responses I have read) however I do think they need to appoint someone with less snap to respond to the reviews. The staff are friendly and helpful but the older gentleman at the bar has on several instances made mistakes with the bill (sometimes in my favour). Overall a nice place with great food letdown only by rude responses and the inability to just say sorry.

we visited the mountain gate for a meal last week and were delighted with the food it was stunning and the service, in particular the waitress Rachel was so accommodating and NOTHING was too much for her, her manners were second to none, what a charming, polite, friendly, helpful and professional young lady, this place is lucky to have such staff (thank you Rachel) the whole experience was awesome, after reading some of the reviews surrounding a certain wedding function we were a little unsure as to dine there or not but so so glad we did, we have came to the conclusion that some of the reviews as stated above were made to damage the reputation of this fabulous place ... well done mountain gate WE WILL RETURN IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE !!

I am furious that the Mountain Gate has considered my review not to be 'true context'! This is a response to their reply to my previous review with the same title.To begin with, I want to clarify that we have only dined there once before, not 'several times'. We enjoyed, and my partner left one positive comment on their facebook page back in January. My partner and I clearly remember reading the menu before ordering. Why on Earth would we have had to 'specify our potato orders', when the potatoes/veg were clearly included in the descriptions of our meals? Infact, it was unprofessional of the waitress not to ask US about our potato specifications! It certainly did NOT state that the meals were 'self contained'.. we would never have paid £15-20 each just for the meat!As for 'beautifully clean plates' after we had finished - mine was actually half full of pre-chewed lamb fat, but I wont add to the situation. The meat was fine, my partner describes his beef as 'divine', but I think most would agree that you can't be completely satisfied with only 1/3 of a meal - we were still hungry!!There was never any mention of the potato element being deducted from the bill, it was just a 'discount', which they then decided would be a bottle of my partners peroni.. which certainly isn't equivalent to TWO side portions of potatoes etc, especially going on their prices!Furthermore, I am confused by another excuse that the kitchen was 'extremely busy', because the place was practically empty when we arrived. It was all obviously a miscommunication between the waitress who took our order and the chef, but I am unhappy that they seem to be denying that it was their fault. Maybe an answer is to better train staff?Finally, the reason for us not complaining on the night is that we didn't want to make a scene or come across as rude and unmannerly, we are not the type of people to do so. I decided to share our experience on Trip Advisor as I felt that the problem had not been addressed and I was frustrated that our night had been ruined. I understand that a bad review is a concern to any business and that they'd naturally try to protect their reputation, but without these reviews they would not be aware and therefore the problems would continue to exist.

I have just had a lovely meal here. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious and the atmosphere was not to pretentious or stuffy, making it relaxed. The food was well presented and there were plenty of delicious sounding seasonal dishes on the menu. The prices were as you'd expect for this type of menu. My only criticism was that the stereo on the bar could have been turned down a little. I cannot wait to find an excuse to return.

We had visited the Mountain Gate previously when it was managed by another person/company and been decidedly underwhelmed by the food and the length of time it took to serve us. The service had been very good and we had received apologies when we spoke to the waitress about this, the manager hadn't been available! This time, having heard from a friend that there had been better reports locally, we were pleasantly surprised. The service was good, the food was reasonably priced with a fair selection from the menu. When the food arrived it was freshly cooked and delicious. We will visit again. Well done for the turnaround, Mountain Gate!

The staff on the day were all friendly and approachable and we had fab service, the sit down meal was also lovely. What let this venue down was; 1 - the initial lack of communication and flexibility on the run up to the day, which caused extreme stress and a huge worry. And 2 - the evening buffet which was very poor quality and quantity for the price paid. I cannot recommend the Mountain Gate in its current status. I feel a vastly different approach is needed in regards to their customer relations and some severe changes are needed to their buffet menu.

8 Years ago I asked a local person, what the food like in the Mountain Gate, she warned me not to bother and I didnt until invited to a wedding there on the 26th of July 2014The public areas were clean, smart, modern, equally the toilets clean and inviting. The venue looks bigger from the outside then it actually is, inside its dark, small and a little claustrophobic, parking is limited too.However the staff seemed friendly, prompt, good service with plenty of them to serve / clear up.The biggest failure was food, the buffet was dreadful, seriously poor, the chef should be ashamed, its not fit for man nor beast!The buffet consisted of these Six dire dishes, all cheap and poor quality1- Sandwiches, cheap nasty bread, so dry it was like cardboard, filled with runny egg mayonnaise, watery fatty ham, poor grade tuna, tasteless cheese.2- Cheapest of cheap crisps, plain & salt 'n' vingear3- Low grade undercooked sausage rolls4- Cheese & onion cocktail sticks5- Round disks that tasted like onion bhaji, but looked like pig fodder.6- Grim looking pasties that I dare not eat.This was a £50 buffet for Ten times the price, however when I spoke to other guest they in formed me that the sit down meal earlier was a enjoyable.My advice if your looking for a venue for your function, insist on seeing the menu & bar prices before paying a deposit. Ask to sample the food they intend to serve & read all the tripadvisor reviews submitted.I would not recommend this place for either a function or evening meal as it's my opinion that if you drastically fail at something as simple as a buffet for 50 people then you have no passion for food or its quality what so ever.

I recently took my family there for lunch and was very impressed. The lunch is both exceptional value and superb quality. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble for them. The landlady in particular was extremely helpful, and made my children feel very comfortable. I am planning to visit for lunch again very soon, and would recommend that any of you, who enjoy good food in a very pleasant environment, do the same.

First of all, I would urge you to ignore the malicious comments below, regarding the Wedding on the 4th July. It appears that the wedding guests had a falling out with the staff, and appear to be ganging up with their negative comments! My wife and I, accompanied with my Parents in law, received first class service and food to match. We travelled up from Port Talbot and stopped off on our way to Llandeilo. My friend at work, who I would say, doesn't impress easily, has been raving on about the Mountain Gate for some time, so we gave it a try.The landlady is a lovely person, who will go the extra mile to ensure that you receive superb service. The food was beautiful and cooked to perfection. In fact, one of the best places I've ever eaten. Well done Mountain Gate!!!!

I can't praise this establishment and it's staff enough...........managed to fit us in last minute as it was a surprise meal out for my partner and as a typical blokey bloke I didn't book in advance. We were greeted like regulars and the management and staff couldn't do enough for us, even though they were extremely busy to the point of being rushed off their feet due to a "party" in another room.We didn't have to wait long for our meal, we both had steak and it was out of this world, cooked to perfection. It's not very often I have a sweet but this time after the quality of the main course I just had to "go there"!! My decision was justified even though I had a job to find room for it!Would I recommend this venue?.............all day every day!Well done Mountain Gate........I know where we'll be going for a meal from now on. My partner has a milestone to celebrate in 2015, this time I'll let you know well in advance.Diolch.

I came here to share a bottle of wine with my husband and a friend. When I asked the manager if we could sit outside in the sun, because the outdoor seating was shaded at the time, he very kindly brought out another table and chairs and put them in the sunshine for us - and he was lovely - so kind and welcoming! I went to the wedding on 4th july and I can I did not see any animal behaviour from guests and can only assumethe member of staff who has made that comment is doing so to hide the fact that the attitude of the staff were rude.as for the comment about different prices for drinks being due to cordials and dashes what a pathetic reason.I brought the same round of drinks of 4 all night and price varied from £12~£15.I stayed for 2 nights and the room was lovely but at no time was it cleaned, we did not have fresh towels and tea and coffe was not replenished.when I went to check out I was told no one there till 8.30 and only after asking to forward me the bill she rang someone who explained to her how to do it.I paid by cash but could not have change because she didnt know how to do but I didnt mind because she was helpful.I work in the hotel trade and know some customers can be awkward but can assure you most off the complaints made concerning this day are valid.I hope people booking a function here will seriously consider there optiions.

I work in the hotel trade and was surprised a member of staff made the comment that guests at the wedding on july 4th were animalistic because even if it were true my boss would not be happy saying this.I am offended that I could be one of the guests this seems to refer to. The drinks being different due to cordials and dashes is another pathetic comment.I brought the same 4 drinks all night and the price varied between £12-£15.Chairs were being taken away from our table at 11.30 and at one stage my wife and myself were left to sit on a huge table without anybody able to join us.Also I am the guest who was checked out by the cleaner.we woke early and after the experience of the night before decide to leave without breakfast because we couldnt get out of there quick enough but even that was a problem because cleaner told me no one there to check us out but she rang someone and they explained to her what to do.I try not to be critical when staying at hotels and amalways on my best behaviour because I know from experience how awkward customers can be but I think the member of staff who has accused guests of being anamalistic is out of order but the comment does not really surprise me because it sums up the attitude of staff.The management should be ashamed of spoiling the couples day and can only assume this esscalated from the problem of the extra room.SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!

Went to a wedding reception here and was descusted by the staffs attitude and manners.Made you feel so un welcomed started stacking up chairs and throwin the wedding favours that were on the tables in the bin and that all started at 8:45 when the party didnt start till 7pm.Such a lovely couple and couldnt believe how they were treated one of the staff actually shouted at the bride as she walked away in front of me and other guests.It was even more frightening to find out that as we paid to stay here overnight in one of the rooms provided we asumed we were safe but it turned out that there wasnt wven a member of staff that stayed we were there alone it scares me to think what could have happened seein as not one member of staff had told us we would b on our own. In fact the manager of the place said that as long as there was guests sleeping there that there was a member of staff stayin there through the night!I would never recommend this place to anyone as a wedding venue neither a place to stay over night! Descusting how they treat payin customers and put us at risk lk that!

my sons weeding was there on friday 4TH july would not recommend this place to anyone he reserved it 12 months in advance 2 weeks befor wedding he was told it would only hold 130 not 150 as originally told two nights before wedding they stopped him having extra room and on the night the bar prices was changing with every round no price list displayed on bar fire exits were blocked off with tables staff was taking peoples drinks from table when they went to use toilets and staff taken wedding thins from table the balloons looked as if they could not be bothered to be blown up and morning after wedding guests got up to find they were locked in and no staff on duty only a cleaner breakfast was supose to be 8.30am to 9.30 am chef never turned up until 9.10am very poor service only good point the buffett was excellent but thats all you could say otherwise would never recommend this place to anyone

We tried to have a meal at this place and arrived to a deserted dining area. Sat there for several minutes and were served drinks and our order was taken. But no food materialised. 30 minutes later a group of 20 men arrived and were immediately served and after a few minutes given their food. We waited and waited then asked the waitress who informed us curtly that our 2 lunches would take yet another quarter of an hour. Still no food and by this time we had to go to an important appointment. I then having almost finished my drink discovered a black item in the bottom of my glass. I was told by the rude and aggressive manageress that this was black paper and not a fly as I suspected. God knows what black paper is doing in a drink. She then proceeded to tell me that we'd have to pay for our lunches even though we had to go due to the time they'd taken to deliver them and the fact that they'd prioritised the 20 people who arrived long after us. Apparently they'd pre-ordered. But not being a medium or mind reader I had no knowledge of this. If we'd been informed on arrival that they were expecting a party of 20 and we wouldn't be prioritised then we would have left immediately. Obviously dealing with 2 lone diners efficiently is beyond them. Avoid!

My partner and I were very disappointed with our meal.. we have been before and have been completely satisfied, but when our meals (I had lamb, my partner had beef) arrived on our table on Friday night we were told that it didn't come with any potatoes or veg. We thought it was odd at the time, especially considering the price, but ate our plates of meat anyway assuming it was our mistake. After our 'meal', which was upto the usual standard, we checked the description of our meals on the menu again only to discover that it should have come with the potatoes etc!We told the waitress, who was very polite, and she apologised and said they'd take a fraction off the bill... which was 1 bottle of peroni! Hardly equivalent to two portions of food! We usually love going there, but there was no variety on our plates and for the price of the two meals, it's not good enough! We also planned to have pudding but decided to leave due to our disappointment.

Booked table 20/05/2014 early evening, good menu, plenty of choice, its nice to be able to go out locally and enjoy first class meal,good setting,staff very polite & helpfull, reasonably priced fresh meals, not tipical bar meals. Been to the mountain gate now on two occasions once on a Saturday night and once on a Sunday, food was brill when we went on a Saturday night but when we went on a Sunday well we had a long wait and when our food turned up our veg was cold and hard but my main complaint was the fact on the both occasion we went they over charged us on the bill, the first time we went they had added on a Smirnoff ice and a pint of carling which we hadn't had, when we told the waiter he didn't query it or apologise just brought us a new bill the right one and on our second visit the same happened again they added on a glass of wine and some drink I had never heard of, so we said to the waitress and she brought us a new bill again, plus they had originally charged us £2.20 for a coke but when we had the second bill the coke was £1.20 so in total they had over charged us by £6.50 on that visit! So just be aware to check your bill if you do go

We booked THE MOUNTAIN GATE for my wife"s 40th -85 Guests on a Saturday night.We could not have asked for anymore,from the time of booking Andrea and all the staff could not do enough for us and were very flexible in catering for all of our requests. The food a hot buffet was outstanding with many people commenting on how good the food.All staff were excellent ,including the bar staff.We stayed overnight rooms were great and again the breakfast was first class and mammoth portions. WE CANNOT FAULT THE SERVICE WE HAD, AND MY WIFE HAD A THE BEST 40TH SHE COULD HAVE WISHED FOR. I HAVE NO LINKS TO THE MOUNTAIN GATE OTHER THAN I HAVE EATEN THERE TWICE BEFORE. IF YOU WANT A DJ AS WELL, THEY EVEN DID THAT FOR US AND TERRY WAS AWESOME.. Thankyou to all those involved, Simon

We had a family Sunday lunch here Sept 2024. Food was very nice , starters were a little small for the price but tasty. The roast was fantastic and plenty of veg for everyone . I don't like being negetive on reviews but I would say in the nicest possible way that the staff that served our table hadn't had a lot of experience or training which is down to the manager /employer. But they were lovely girls and nothing was to much trouble. 1 thing that I was a bit disappointed in was the waiter that brought the veg to the table was actually chewing food while putting our veg on the table . Was not really impressed with that but over all food made up for it . Price was good to . Toilets could do with a little attention .
