We stayed in room 25. Beware of the stairs, unless you're fairly steady on your feet these stairs could be a problem. We didn't go back and fore our room as much as normal as didn't feel particularly safe using the stairs. Room was small but comfortable with everything you might need. Location convenient in the city centre, parking directly up a lane beside the hotel, lane is extremly narrow. You might struggle manouvering a large car. Our car was blocked in this morning by a car parked on the main road blocking the lane on the main road. We had evening meal in the pub restaurant , hubby had fish and chips, I had pie and chips. Food was hot, delicious and plentiful. After food we returned to our room to relax, I decided to have a bath as I'd earlier read a review saying the bath in our room was amazing. Sadly when I started running my bath it became apparent the water wasn't hot enough, I rang reeption to be told the brewery had put in one big tank and obviously the hot water had run out but would reheat but could be a while. I was unable to have a shower as the shower isn't electric, it uses the same tap as the bath. Managed a fairy warm shower around 10pm. Hubby had a hot shower this morning around 7 30. Sorry but when paying £75 for a room I expect to be able to shower or bath when I need/want to. We stay regularly in hotels (stayed in 3 over the school summer holiday) just to get away and relax and and this is a first Breakfast, cereal, aples, oranges, bananas, youghurt, set cooked breakfast, full, veggie, butty or omlette. One slice of toast each. Help yourself to drinks, tea, coffee and OJ. Breakfast not the best but passable. Overall sorry, but we wouldn't return.

Very rude lady at the reception. We have been here before for Sunday lunch and the experience was completely different. We were chased out of the bar area by this very aggressive and rude woman and was told unceremoniously to leave as we were 10 mins early and when we said we would have a drink at the bar and wait, we were again told to leave and come back when a table would be ready. We have never been spoken to in that manner before especially from of front of house staff. First impressions were shocking. If we could have found somewhere else we would never have gone back. There were other couples receiving the same aggression from the lady on the front desk. When we finally sat at our table we were told to wait before going up for the carvery. Several of the customers were complaining about the beef and how tough it was and people sent their meals back. We had the turkey which was lovely, the roast potatoes were rock hard and inedible. The waitress that served us was very pleasant and helpful and a credit to the Boars Head. Perhaps she should be front of house welcoming guests. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Won’t ever go back !!!!!!

We ate dinner here one Thursday evening. The restaurant was clean & inviting. The staff were helpful, it was busier than they were expecting that evening and you could tell. The staff seemed rushed off their feet & our waitress didn’t even ask us if we wanted dessert, she brought our children the ice cream they had as part of the kids menu but didn’t offer us any dessert! Fortunately we didn’t want any but I think it was because they were too busy. The portions were huge but it wasn’t the best food we’ve ever had. I had lamb shank which was nice, but the mash wasn’t really mashed, it was quite solid, more like smashed, & the carrots & peas were completely over cooked & tasteless, seemed like they had been boiled rather than steamed. But overall wasn’t a bad meal.

Stayed for 2 nights on 11th June on arrival we're shown to our room, very clean and comfortable well appointed, hotel near to all amenities and has its own car park, breakfast on first morning was adequate, little variety in continental, but good cooked breakfast, good service and pleasant staff, however breakfast before departure was completely different, there were about 10 guests in the room prior to our arrival and only one or two had been served, went to find assistance to find only one member of staff on duty and she looked harassed, waited for her to serve the others before she took our order, in the meantime more guests arrived, when our breakfast arrived it was luke warm, but as we had waited some time we just ate what we could and then decided to leave, on departure looked for somewhere to deposit room key, but could find no one who could help but left.key in room door, would stay here again but more staff needed for breakfast service to make it more enjoyable

Excellent place to stay.Free parking to the rear of the hotel. Full of history and character. Check in was friendly and quick. We were even shown to our room. The little things like being shown to your room mean a lot in my opinion. The staff are extremely professional and smartly dressed. I love that. Our room was spotless, comfortable, warm and very quiet. We stayed for 2 nights bed and breakfast over the May Bank holiday. Breakfast was also excellent. We had a full English vegetarian breakfast. It was delicious. There was fresh coffee, Welsh tea, fresh juices, cereal and yoghurt also on offer. The hotel is in a wonderful location, central to everything. We spent some time in the bar area on our last evening. The bar maid was lovely and smartly dressed. The drinks are very reasonable. I highly recommend this lovely hotel. I would definitely stay again. We had room 16. It was spacious and had a spacious bathroom too. Such a beautiful hotel.

Visited with my wife. Really liked the look of the menu, unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. Ordered a couple of cocktails but was told the staff hadn’t been ‘trained’ in making them so weren’t available (they were on the printed menu & online). The place is dated (napkins in glasses etc). Despite the place being quiet we were seated on a cramped table (there were loads of empty booths with looked smart so why seat us on a cramped table next to the only other couple having food). The starter I order wasn’t available. My curry was no better than something out of a jar you’d make at home. Wife enjoyed her chicken burger. Service was very slow. Stuff didn’t bother to ask if we wanted drinks etc. There are far far better places in Carmarthen than this. Really needs a revamp. Wouldn’t bother revisiting.

Thank you very much to the staff at the Boars Head. The room was clean, tidy and had everything you would need for your stay. From towels to shampoo, body wash and a tea and coffee making facility. Their on site restaurant is amazing quality we ate dinner there and the food was great, the portion sizes are generous. With breakfast being included in the price of your room you really cannot go wrong. There was fresh brew coffee a Continental breakfast and cooked breakfast options which you can chose from both if you want to . We had an amazing stay and with it being within minutes of the theatre and shops it’s an ideal location. We would most definitely recommend and stay again.

Booked our meal for 4pm, asked if we could go into lounge earlier to watch rugby before the rugby, but as it was very busy Mothers Day this wasn't available, this was not a problem as we were able to visit a neighbouring pub When we arrived just before 4pm we were asked if we could go back in another 30 mins. This was a problem as one of our party had to go back to work and we had small children, we were allowed to sit at our table but unable to use the bar as it was very busy and wasn't able to have our meal for over an hour, but the person who had to go to work was allowed to recieve their meal 10 mins before leaving, to eat on own Resulting with having to only have a very small meal and rushing it but still charged full Disappointing

Went back in the evening to find we had been mislead. My wife had to have chicken curry and rice. Don't get me wrong the food was good except for the chips I had. We asked a waitress for some mango chutney and vinegar and it took over 10 minutes to bring them to the table. By then it was too late. Very poor experience will never go there again.

I was staying here for a work trip with a colleague, the first night was lovely. The second night I had the prawn tagliatelle from their evening specials and got food poisoning! Still unwell days later. We were staying in a twin room, meant to be for 3 nights. On the last night we were going to be there, we were asked to pack up our things so we could move to a different room in the morning as our room was needed for renovations. I thought this was a little strange, and would have liked to have been informed at the beginning of the booking process? Overall I think it’s an alright place to go as it’s convenient, maybe just avoid the prawn pasta!

Possibly the worst nights sleep I've ever had. The rooms on the third floor are like ovens constantly because of the hotels boiler in the attic. The old sash windows rattle constantly and there's no cold water running to the rooms so you have to go down to the bar for a glass if it's open. The food is okay and the bar is fine, but avoid staying if you can.

The food is great. We all had a carvery with some having desserts too. There were 12 of us for lunch as a team Christmas dinner. Booked well in advance. Unfortunately the service we received from one waitress was awful. There were three waitresses serving us in total, the younger two were polite and did their job well. They were spoken to like rubbish from the older waitress who was so rude to us and actually very bad at her job. Firstly not allowing us to order drinks at the bar (being told to sit and wait instead, which then took half an hour to be served), then it came to clearing our dinner plates… she stacked all 12 plates on top of each other (cutlery in between) right in front of a colleague of mine, demanded that we all passed our plates down the line. I’ve worked in hospitality for years and this is absolutely NOT the way to clear plates! We then asked for another round of drinks and were told we would have to wait until our desserts had been given out. Then to top it all off when paying, not only did she not say please, thank you, or ask if everything was ok.. she then proceeded to overcharge everybody! No apology just refunded it to one person’s card for us to sort out between ourselves! The food was great but you have been absolutely let down by this member of staff, I think her name was Diane or Dionne! Please give her some lessons in treating customers. Everybody has bad days but her attitude towards us and the other members of staff was disgusting!

Visited Sunday 5th November 2023, food was lovely and the gentleman who served our meat with the colourful hair was really polite, friendly and chatty. However we did have to wait a while before we were 'allowed' to go and get our carvery. We did ask a waitress if we could go up as we had been waiting a while as there was nobody at the carvery. She rudely snapped and said they will call us when they are ready. When we were eventually told we could get our food there was a long queue so couldn't understand how they were sending a few tables at a time and at other times the counter was completely quiet. Our table was close to where people queued for their food which meant people were standing right by our table and we had to ask one woman to not sit on the edge of our table for a rest as she had a bad leg!! The food as mentioned was delicious but certain staff were abrupt and rude.

We stayed overnight to celebrate our Anniversary after deciding it was a good base for a restaurant we had booked and also close to cardigan which we were visiting the next day. This place is in a good location and could be great if there were more staff who were trained properly and also had some personality. Upon arriving and wanting to check in we were made to wait as the only member of staff was serving at the bar. We then saw 2 other members of staff who were sat in a corner , on on the laptop and another clearly on a break. There was no acknowledgement or any kind of hello even thought they could see we were waiting. Really unprofessional. We paid for the room with a four poster bed, totally overpriced. Breakfast average, and that's a compliment. To top it off, the fire alarm went off at midnight. Not a member of staff or security in sight. When we spoke to the person in charge the next morning we were told that the night porter had left the building for some unknown reason?!!? No real apology given and only acknowledged what had happened because we asked to speak to him. We will definitely not stay again and I'm sure the 4 lovely other couples we spoke to felt exactly the same. Such a shame cos with the right management and team this place could be great. Manners and a smile go a long way. Unfortunately this place doesn't seem to be capable of either.

Quite possibly one of the worst 'dining' experiences ever! Waitress was incredibly rude and disinterested. Took an age to take our order. I asked for tap water for the table and we got a single glass of tepid water for one. The male waiter was marginally better and at least managed to crack a smile and say please and thank you. It took 40 minutes for a single starter to arrive, which as far as I could see had purely required heating up in a microwave. The 3 mains took almost an hour to arrive, despite there only being two other occupied tables ahead of us. The waitress seemed incapable of placing the plates down on the table in front of us, and basically threw them on the table. She didn't offer us any sauces or additional drinks and we had to go and get our own in the end. The food itself was appalling. My fish was bland and tasteless, and the batter was chewy to the point of being inedible. The peas had been cooked to within an inch of their lives. My son ate less than half of his burger and left the rest. My partner's mashed potato actually had four WHOLE potatoes in it! We basically left most of the food due to it being either overcooked or not prepared properly. I was very loathe at having to pay for what were essentially three very badly cooked school dinners and that's being kind. I get that this is pub restaurant and not gourmet dining but to get three simple meals so badly wrong and to have such a terrible experience - the owners really need to rethink the way they operate.

OMG poor service doesn't quite hit the mark. We had table of 3 , 10 in total in restaurant. First impressions rude , incompetent and surly waitress, only other staff on was apparently the supervisor, with same surly and incompetent attitude. Ordered 3 main meals , 1 hour 15 mins wait for half of first meal, queried with supervisor as the wait for rest of first meal and second meal was another 20 minutes . Third meal came at another interval of 20 mins. Explanation from "supervisor " there is only 1 chef on tonight. By this time all tables bitterly complaining, one table of 2 still waiting for their food at 1 hour plus then walked out. 15 minutes later one of their meals arrived 😱 and the supervisor left it on an empty table followed some time later by second meal at the empty table. Third table still waiting for their meal when we left, all restaurant informed "supervisor " that the table of 2 had gone. He went to check ????? Then came back to clear the meals of steak and kebab , presumably to throw in bin !!!!!! The food was poor to average but obviously some was cold and had missing or wrong sauces. Paying the bill was another joke, asked for a simple three way split and couldn't get that right at all . We gave up paid our bill and left. Boars Head your staff training and customer service needs a lot of work. 1 chef should manage 10 people with ease ( yes I do know what I am talking about fully trained in hospitality with hotels and restaurants around the country) . Will not be re visiting. Appaling , remember a smile and pleasant manner costs nothing and can go a long way to cover your employers inadequacys If we had been only ones to complain I may not have written this review but ALL your customers complained to each other and your supervisor to now effect no apologies or curtesy shown. That's 10 people who are now telling their friends, colleagues and family not to go to Boars Head, can you really afford to lose such custom.

Visited The Boars Head for Sunday lunch following a recommendation from a family member and we’re really glad we listened. The service was truly next to none - we arrived a bit earlier than the time we booked as we were travelling back from a trip and it was no problem at all. We were sat immediately and served straight away. The starters were generous and tasty and the Sunday lunch was exceptional. Generous servings and every member of staff was friendly and helpful. Delightful.

Been ages since we last came here for a really nice Sunday lunch. Decided to drive down and try the Advertised Sunday lunch with all the 'Christmas trimmings'. First hurdle .. Proof of ID please in case the 'officials ' came in asking to see your ID. £1000 fine apparently. Ok.. Cool with that. Sat down in the bar area. Attentive waiting on staff. Couldn't order a drink due to Drakefords Law, but ok to eat.. Seems CV19 knows the difference between having a pint and eating a roast. One is ok but other not so. Anyhow.. Starter arrived (Prawn Salad) which was average and served with bread spread which can only be described as 'cheap Marg'. Looked nice to be fair. Mains, the Carvery of Beef and all the trimmings. Beef was tasty but slightly over cooked and not pink. Roasted veg (parsnips and spuds) looked burnt around the edges. Ok if you like a bit of colouring with your food. Didn't tasted all that brill tbh. (mustn't forget the soggy Yorkshires). Ordered the Christmas pud which arrived in a large bowl (which was chipped) and drowning in 'Brandy sauce'. Looked like it had been 'nuked' and served up in a hurry. Having drawn this to the attention of the waiting on staff, they eventually returned with two slices of Pudding and custard on a wee square plate. My point behind this? I know times are hard for Pubs and the like but I think that the standards of what was once a really nice treat to look forward to has dropped considerably. I've worked in Catering and know how busy a full service can be as well as demanding. However there is no excuse to drop the ball. If you want repeated custom, then focus on the service and food presentation. The adage of pile it high and bang it out really doesn't fit with how good food should be presented. Unfortunately today wasn't near enough good food or near perfect. The bill for three of us came to just over £50. I suppose you get what you pay for. If , as someone else commented that this is the 'best carvery in town', then there's no hope for Carmarthen.

My boyfriend and I attempted to attend the pub area on the 03.12.20 at around 7.30pm. From what we could see from outside it was very quiet inside so we thought we thought we would go for one quiet drink. Unfortunately we did not get that far. We had to ring the bell for someone to come and see to us,a mature woman came around the corner, she didn’t greet us,she barked at us and asked if we had a booking. We explained that we were just looking to come in for a drink. She huffed, went into the small booth, asked if we had ID,I apologised and said that I did not, this wasn’t required in the previous restaurant we had been in and she simply said “you can’t come in then”turned around, turned the light off and went to walk away. I had to then get her attention again to explain that I had my debit card which can be used as a form of ID and I have done so in many restaurants/pubs and she just snapped “you cannot come in without ID” and then walked off. She was extremely rude, the place was empty so it wasn’t like she was busy. Extremely poor manners and no people skills. She was very unprofessional and I’m not surprised it was so quiet in there

My mum and I visited today after Xmas shopping. The gentleman fitted us in which was nice. I ordered the mushroom stroganoff and my mum had the pie. We had halloumi fries too. My mum said hers was lovely but my stroganoff was so tasteless and disappointing. Service was not great (had to ask for menu, drinks and bill) and if someone has bothered to check on our meal I would have asked for something else. Garlic bread was nice but not worth the price and halloumi was over done. Won’t be going back there....

Booked a table for lunch with a guest visiting us from abroad, the Covid rules were followed mainly although we noticed chairs were not wiped after a diner left - other restaurants do this ?? Service was a little slow as we waited for our drinks some time. My meat pie was very good, but the other two meals of gammon were very over cooked, my guest did not want to complain although we did mention to the waitress the gammon was not eaten as it was almost cremated- no response

We visited here 23rd Sept for the half price carvery.Whilst the beef was delicous, it was clearly not a carvery.Understandably,in this climate , the carvery couldnt be operated in the standard way, but we were not given the option to return if we wanted more. It was more plated dinner than carvery, so it was a case of you get what you pay for. My friend was happy with his dessert, but my trifle couldnt have been smaller if they had tried to make it so. A bottom layer of jelly, one piece of tinned fruit, with a bit of custard and whipped cream on top with half a Cadburys flake.Being that the carvery should have come to £5, the total for my meal including coffee and the childs trifle came to approx £11, so the dessert and coffee was obviously not part of the half price meal. If this was on a Thursday when the full price would have been payable, my bill would have been £22 for a small beef dinner, a childrens party trifle and a coffee. The waiter who served us was most helpful and polite, esp when it came to accomodating my slight deafness.

Excellent food, excellent rooms bed was a little tiny in my room and I do prefer a bath but that’s a personal thing, lovely friendly staff and would recommend to anyone, only reason I’m not giving 5 is purely based on the size of the bed, but over all great! Noise outside can be loud (stayed on a weekend) but hardly hotels fault!

I had the cavers, mid week. The price was about £10, choice of beef or pork. Meat serving was fine choice of veg and a Yorkshire pud. Gravy was more tasty than you usually get and the stuffing was really good.Service was lacking. Four staff sat close to me in the bar never once asking if how my meal was or if I needed anything else. When staff sit around talking and are not engaged, this is the owner/ manager's problem as they have not been trained well or supervised. The American system of low wages for servers but 15%- 20% tip works for better service, and the servers make a lot more money well above minimum wage.

Basil Faulty’s love child is on guard at the bar, the most unpleasant, unwelcoming bar maid in this world. She greets you with a growl and makes you feel very uneasy. While we were at this delightful hovel, she had a little tantrum and threw a bottle in the bin behind the bar. Other staff were lovely and the food was a pleasant surprise. If you don’t like working in customer service, don’t, simple as.
