The Morning Star in Oldham

Lovely pub nice views perfect to watch the sunset with a drink. Foods recommended and great prices along with friendly welcoming staff always clean and has plenty of seating and a nice big beer garden.

Well not been here for years after a few promises of new owners who are different who ended up being poor I was told the latest owners are good and good is good . Sceptical I went one Friday afternoon place was rammed ordered cheese and onion pie chips mushy peas and yes got to say food is good . We will be back 👍🏽 Went again on 25/8/24 Not overly impressed this time waited an age for the food . Meat Potatoe pie on seven chips yawn not that good really plus scampi average . Nah letting it slip I’m afraid just a tad above shay wake food but miles behind others nearby plus 70p extra as I wanted a bit more gravy and they charged me ! for a small amount of gravy just very wrong ( small white bowl as in picture). You are miles behind local pubs but just one step above a weatherspoons I’m afraid. Food bang on average , cheap but average

Dinner time meal, rag pudding. To die for. Not the usual shop bought rag pudding. Filled the plate. Service excellent as well.

Nice food lovely staff well organised

Starter was good but sadly nain courses let it down. We had 2 chicken dishes which seemed a strange combination a little American style but dry. My wife's meat and potato pie had a lack if meat my friend said his salmon was dry and new potatoes were hard. Staff were fine shame pub is lovely

Visited the pub/restaurant on Sunday with family, the place was very welcoming and service was excellent every one had a smile and friendly face, service was slick and timing was great, the actual food was superb we all had different things but every one of us thought it was very good and the prices are extremely reasonable for what you get, definetley would recommend and will definitely visit again.

Always good food, reasonably priced

We’ve been here twice now and both times it’s been excellent for food. First time I had the Moroccan Lamb Salad which was the best thing I’ve ever tasted (why oh why did you remove it from the menu 😭 because I am obsessed) and the second time I had the Star Burger. Everyone’s food came out piping hot and every plate cleared. We went with a variety of kids both times and the kids choices were varied enough that everyone had something they loved. We do have some very particular members of our party and some fussy kids but there were no complaints whatsoever! First time we were a large-ish party of 9 and second time we were a party of 5 but no difference in service or quality of the food. Menu options are really quite wide so there is something for everyone though admittedly there are no veggies or vegans in our parties so I didn’t pay close attention to those options. Atmosphere is great and they have the big TV for sports. Additionally an outside area for the summer and a good sized car park. We will definitely be visiting again. Thanks so much for 2 fantastic visits so far!

Food a little expensive for the type of place but other than that it's a great pub/ restaurant. Car park big patio area and it's clean and tidy 👍

This is my local and I've supported it for nearly 40 years. The current landlord and landlady are a down to earth couple who get on with every one. Friendly and approachable. Good food good ale good company.

Came with family from wales, told them how nice it would be. I ordered fish and chips and got batter instead of fish! 100% not coming back, you should be ashamed

Tried the 3 small dishes deal. All pretty tasty, the honey chicken in particular was really tasty. I wouldn't get the meatballs again, only 3 meatballs and a lot of sauce. Kids had an ice cream too and I got a mocha which we enjoyed. The staff are amazing, can't fault any of them, always attentive, accommodating and friendly.

Great Sunday lunch bit pricey but good

When ever we come back to Shaw we always call in for either a glass of wine or food. Can recommend The Morning Star.

We had a lovely meal here. We ordered spaghetti bolognese, lamb chops, sea bass and the chicken caeser salad. Followed by the crumble, cheesecake and Eton mess. The food was delicious. We're definitely going back. All the staff were really helpful and I would definitely recommend a visit.

Delicious salt and pepper squid, lovely beef and yorkshire pud roast dinner, great house red wine,polite attentive staff .First time here would definitely go back again.thank you for a lovely mother's day treat.

Reviewing on behalf of my mother and her husband as requested. They had a lovely meal, said food was amazing, beautifully presented . Friendly staff. Had visited over the Xmas period and it was lovely atmosphere and warm . Unfortunately today they were freezing while dining and it really spoilt their experience and has put them off returning.

So disappointed. Poor service because not enough staff. Food was not good. Salty soup awful. Prawn and crayfish cocktail! No crayfish and small portion. Crispy beef was tasteless and burger tasteless. Overall very disappointed. Had a voucher and staff unsure how to process bill! £40 not well spent...

A short walk up the hill from Shaw tramway station...excellent outside area..good views..

Really good pub. Eaten here a few times recently and the food has always been great. It's dog friendly which is a big plus for me. Staff have always been friendly and attentive.

Great local pub. It gets better each time we go in . Live music at weekends. Karaoke and quiz nights during the week. Sometimes busy at the bar. Great staff .

Was on a long walk and popped in. No beer was 5% or more. Unfortunately doesn't sell proper beer. They had san Miguel at 4.7% at £5.50! Very expensive for weak beer. Won't be coming again unfortunately

Staff were extremely helpful when they found out we had been waiting for our order for nearly 2 hours but, when it finally came it did not disappoint 👏 🙌. This pub is exactly whay people need after a long walk or a hard day a work inorder to wind down

I frequently go to the morning star for drinks. The service is always lovely and fast. The prices are fairly cheap for the area. A great wholesome pub, also a thank you to the tall blonde waitress with glasses as she always has a chat with me when I come in.

Service by the young lady was 5 star but the burger served was not cooked through. Disappointed and will not be returning.

upsetting to see as a first time visitor to this restaurant that the managers think it's appropriate to bring personal issues into the workplace, especially ones that are of no concern to other members of the public. it's a surprise they haven't started moving their home furnishings into the bar, at least then we'll feel more welcome being involved in such pathetic issues as the ones today.

unprofessional atmosphere with owners making false accusations about customers. will not be attending again, a shame as other staff are lovely. wouldn’t reccomend for customers or performers

First time at the Morning Star. We had come to see a guy called Dan Towers who is gaining quite a reputation around Oldham after he moved here from Bury where he’s an established local talent and has played Glastonbury. We didn’t order food as we d eaten but my mouth was watering as the food served up looked absolutely delicious . I ve heard about the legendary pies at the MS, and will be returning for some Cheese and Onion. Staff were on the ball too, polite, efficient and lots of bodies on this busy Easter weekend . Good pint too at an affordable price. Dan Towers was perfect for the clientele here who were all ages. Loudest applause came from the back. Strangely the tables near the talent were all reserved with nobody sitting at them. I ve been at Ed Sheehan gigs where I ve been closer to the act. Not that you needed to be close as Dan played some high energy numbers. A mixture of rock and country with a couple of his owns songs thrown in. His guitar play is the finest I ve heard. None of the 3 chord amateurs you usually get at a pub live music gig. A group of local lads just returning from a Sunday league match I imagine tried to match Dan singing “Go your own way’ so he responded with a face melter on the guitar. That’s class. Morning star has lots of parking space and the decor and vibe is just right for a local hostelry . Thank you for a great night.

Having had several lovely meals here and probably one of the best Sunday roasts around,we booked a table for 7pm on Sunday. When we arrived and told them we had booked a table I heard the guy behind the bar speak to who I think was the manageress and heard her tell him to see if he could find us a table. The guy led us around the corner where he told us he had bad news. He said they had stopped serving at 7 as it was the weekend before a bank holiday! No it’s not the weekend before a bank holiday, that’s next weekend Why weren’t we told when we booked a table to eat that they weren’t serving food. Why weren’t we told at the bar that they weren’t serving food. Needless to say we turned around and walked out and will never return. 1 star review because you can’t give none.

Food was shocking and what made it worse was we had to wait ages for it. Cold and uncomfortable vibe in the pub. I wish I’d had checked the hygiene rating before visiting as it is only a 3!They don’t advertise this on the door which they should, which explains a lot about the place. AVOID

Food was beautiful, it would have been 5 stars but 1 star was knocked off for the following... all small things, but put together lost them a star: 1. Pricing, a touch on the expensive side, no big deal, you can see the prices before you order. But for a quick Thursday lunch, more than I'd want to pay. 2. Atmosphere, it's a nice pub, but not many people in, I like people watching and it didn't provide that. Again, I'm there to eat, so no biggy. 3. Wait time. Again, was supposed to be a quick lunch, but it took 35 minutes for the food to be delivered, if they were busy, fine, I get it, but it was pretty empty 4. Beer selection, I like a 4% beer, they had Lee's and Carlserg, which I don't like. Again, not the end of the world. But £4.20 for a pint of Carlsberg didn't make me want to go back in a hurry 5. The only critique on the food was that the coleslaw was the driest coleslaw I've ever seen, I asked for extra mayo to make it a workable 'slaw. All, small things, but add them together and you've got 4 stars! Other notes; people, location, parking were great.

Food was amazing amd reasonably priced, friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. Definately going again. Family of 5, 3 had ths rag pudding, 1 chilli chicken amd rice and pizza all was very tasty and plenty of it.

Went for lunch with a work mate, excellent service and the food was delicious! I had the crispy chilli beef and my friend the cheese and onion pie - I had to have a taste and have to say it was the nicest I have ever had!!! Will definitely be back to have a full portion 😁

It's a lovely and dog friendly pub. After a long walk, much needed for a drink and to grab something to eat. Friendly staff and food tasty and nicely presented.

We went for my mother in law's birthday and it was fairly busy but we jad booked our table for 7pm. Nobody came to take our order and we were sat for a while. I went to the bar to ask if it was table or order at the bar and was told it was table service. The final straw was someone's dog peed on the floor next to our table and nobody came to clean it up. Sorry Morning Star but we will not be back.

Sat down and was attended to rather quickly, We had starters and mains and our little one just a main, Food came quick, was delicious & very enjoyable. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Place is clean & tidy. Thanks so much!

The food was a bit disappointing as we had starters that were supposed to be served on sourdough but we ended up with half a muffin! The coleslaw and peas were dried out under a hot lamp also!

The food was quite nice. What was a disappointment was the length of time which we had to wait to get our meal. Having had pre ordered 7 out of the 11 meals required, we were dissatisfied with the wait. At no time during the meal did any member of staff come to inquire if everything was OK, or ask if any more drinks were required. I asked for some tartar sauce, the waitress brought ketchup, when I went to the bar to ask for more tartar sauce as the wrong sauce had been brought, I was told I had asked for ketchup. I don't think we will be going back as it almost spoilt which was an emotional day, scattering of my father in laws ashes.

We come here because it’s our local The pub and restaurant are gorgeous- proper old fashioned comfortable bar and separate restaurant areas. Food is very pub grub and mediocre The service probably depends on who is on duty - the last time we visited it was shocking- we waited over an hour for our food, others waited longer, tables weren’t cleared etc. we thought it was because the waiting staff were really busy but when we went to the bar to pay ( because no one had come to our table for ages) they were both standing around chatting We will probably visit again- we really want and need somewhere with good food in Shaw - hope it improves soon

Had a great lunch here. A beef burger and chicken burger. Beef was very tasty but the chicken was fantastic, huge and well cooked. Worth the upgrade to home cooked chips which were fantastic. Only complaint is why it wasn't busier, gem of a pub for anyone wanting a good lunch

Quiet, well set out ,the food was awesome and so where the staff ,no long wait for food and staff always there to help with any problems .not that we had any and I will be going again ,so please try for yourself ,you won't be disappointed.

The service was spot on and the food delicious, we had the bacon chop and a mac and cheese and both were cooked to perfection

If I could I would give this place no rating what so ever 1 star is far too much for this place. The Current owners as of April 2022 have an attitude that does not promote their business at all. They are a terrible reflection of the place overall. The profanities they shouted at me and my family outside the pub was disgusting and it was simply due to parking. My Youngest has a blue badge but we choose to not use it everywhere as it is a hidden disability but the owners still decided that they were going to call us out for this when we parked in what they have described as disabled parking. But told us we “have no right parking there” despite needing the access the space provides. Will not visit again!!

Just now got back from the morning star celebrating my mother's 70th birthday. I won't be going back. Ever. Service was extremely slow. Then we were told the lift had broke with our food in it. So we were just about to go when they fixed it. Food was cold. It was either that or go elsewhere and unfortunately for us we felt we were committed at this point. Several people ordered the vegan option which tastes like sand. Service was terrible. Food was mediocre at best. Save your hard earned pennies and go to somewhere better. Totally spoiled my mums birthday.

Wonderful food, excellent service

I popped in to watch the grand national on Saturday and I was very pleased with the experience. Very friendly staff and an impressive range of British food and drinki plan to take my girlfriend for a meal very soon.

Visited for mothers day, only booked a week before so was surprised to get in. Was quiet around 1pm; should that be the case for mothering sunday or was that a sign that the place is not to shout about ?? If you don't like chicken you will be stuck for many more options. Sunday dinner was a lump of dry chicken, paid extra for cauliflower cheese that was just cheese grated on top not in a sauce so not worth the addition. Meat and potatoe pie was dry, with little potato which some would like just a meat pie but not what was ordered. For reference, no vegan options and 2-3 vegi options, cheese, cheese or spice. Table wasn't set properly with just forks had to ask for knives. (Picky I know but it's the little attention to detail). Service was hit and miss, staff didn't seem happy to be there. Disappointed overall, many better pub grub venues around.

Bad service at this pub on Christmas Eve. While I appreciate they were busy because of Christmas the service was diabolical. Having pre ordered our food the day before we waited 1 and a 1/2 hours for it to be served. My partners food was cold and returned and the waitress stated it would be another 40 minutes to re cook it. So we made our feelings known to the Manager. This is a pub trying to be a restaurant with a menu far too advanced for their capabilities and the service not up to standard.

Friendly staff, great atmosphere and the food is excellent The pub is also pet friendly as well so a real bonus for us as we sometimes struggle to find a pub that's as good as this that's pet friendly, regardless of pets it's a great pub and you definitely will not be disappointed
