Having not visited the Moon and Stars at Rushden since early summer, my wife and I popped in for what we thought would be a quick drink. However, being Thursday, we were informed it was steak night and decided to order. So pleased we did. Everything about our meals was first class. Our steaks were prime cuts that were cooked to perfection, with the usual accompaniments. Exceptional value for money, with a free drink thrown in! Hat off to Shane, who is the perfect host and wore several tonight due to temporary staff shortages. Whether you're local or come from further afield as we do, you won't be disappointed when visiting the Moon and Stars.

Weird opening hours to start with! When open, the public bar was friendly enough. We went to the lounge to chat and look at the menu. The manager obviously likes Country music which was belting out. Asked for volume to be reduced as we were the only one in there - nothing changed. Tried moving tables to a quieter one and nearly lost our drinks which felt as if they were glued to the sticky tables. Menu is very limited and ‘eclectic’ (three small dishes for £20). Nothing was on offer like the pictures posted. It looks like a hobby pub that no one cares about, which is such a shame as it has the essentials of a great Country pub if it had the right manager/owner. Won’t be going back unless it changes radically.

Great little place which I believe has just reopened. We were in the area for a wedding and popped in here for a bite to eat. We were met with a really warm welcome. We ordered the chicken schnitzel and the catch of the day which were both delicious and very generous portions. Not wanting to miss out on a dessert, yet both feeling really full, we ordered cheesecake and chocolate cake to take away and enjoyed that later on. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely return to the Moon and Stars and won't hesitate in recommending to family and friends.

We moved into the area in February 2020, the first thing I like to do is look at the local pub before choosing a property within a close community to gauge the welcome you receive. I really cannot fault the welcome that myself and the family received, in fact we went back a few times before settling on buying the property. The manager and local community welcomed us with open arms, when I read on here some of the reviews that mention having that "stranger from out of town feeling" and subsequently "being ignored" is absolute rubbish. My whole family have been looked after and we have been in the community for 2 months now and feel like we have lived there all of our lives, maybe people should not be so quick to judge. Keep up the good work Keith you are doing a great job and cannot wait to get back there once the lockdown has been lifted...darts practice is coming on well hahaha

We were pleasantly greeted by the barman and ordered food of a Thai red curry and chicken pie with veg, mash and gravy. When the food arrived we had to ask for a spoon for the curry. On eating the curry I found it to be very hot - both in temperature and chilli!! . I do like a hot curry although it was still a little warm for me. My daughter had the pie and said that it tasted like the cheap ones she had a Uni. The veg were fine but a large stalk was left on the broccoli and cauliflower. When the barman collected our plates he asked if we enjoyed our food. I did say it was very hot and he replied "very spicy isn't it". I feel that customers should be warned if curries are going to be very hot. Overall if was an ok meal for the price. On visiting the ladies found that there was no light bulb in the overhead fitting, the sink was not clean and the toilet flush handle had been replaced with a short piece of steel rod. This a small characterful village pub but with a little attention to details could be much more of an attraction.

Visited this pub recently and had a curry (excellent) and then later for a burger (excellent) so I thought it would be time to try the roast. Arrived early as I was aware of its growing popularity and noted that several of the tables were reserved so booking is advised on a Sunday. The food was fantastic as Maria the chef included all the trimmings you could think of including cauliflower cheese. This was no surprise as the curry had come with vegetable sides, naan and poppadom and the burger with pickles and onion rings. There is a serious amount of effort and skill going on here for very reasonable prices.

Looking for somewhere different from our usual venues and decided to try The Moon & Stars again after a LONG absence. What an improvement from last time we were there several years ago. Change of management has done a great job with the atmosphere in the pub and the quality of the food. Five if us were on a birthday supper night out. All of us familiar with good food and pleasant surroundings as we dine out frequently. We were not disappointed. Whilst the menu is not extensive, there was something for everybody and the quality was superb. The evening was enhanced by the pleasant and attentive staff who all had a sense of humour and dealt with our banter well. The surprise of the evening was the very reasonable bill. Crisp roast potatoes, delicious gravy... all the basics done really well, and friendly, efficient service throughout. This is not a "fancy" Sunday lunch with pea-shoots everywhere. I was out on my bike and nearing the end of my ride. It must have been close to 30c so thought i'd drop in for a swift half and fill up one of my water bottles. The Bar maid was friendly and polite, and i joined in the bar banter with a few locals. A proper village pub which is a dying breed. Public houses such as this serve as a focal point for locals with the demise of village stores. Unfortunately so many village pubs are bought up by individuals and turned into homes without consideration of the purpose of these establishments. The end result is that person ends up being a hate figure within there own community. Some might say this is Karma, which i tend to agree with, so maybe anyone considering doing something like this needs to look at the bigger picture.

Having been there once before, I was really looking forward to going back. Unfortunately my second visit was not as great. I understand that currently they have no chef. So I do bare in mind that this is potentially the issue. However the main course I ordered was sent back as the lamb shank was over cooked and extremely small, it was laid on top of cold slodgey lumpy mash. I changed it for the sirloin steak which arrived after everyone else had finished their meal. I think currently with no real chef they need to reconsider their pricing. As the food at present is currently very basic. Westend prices for a greasy spoon value and to be honest a greasy spoon would of done a better job. Such a shame because I know the standard of cooking before. Hope you get a proper chef soon. One other thing, definitely a summer pub, it was freezing in the pub even with the small open fire.

Car park full and cars parked on the road outside so thought it was busy, called to check if there was a table for dinner and saw it was mainly locals drinking which gave the place a buzzy atmosphere. Offered a table in the bar or restaurant decided to stay in the bar as restaurant was empty. Quickly ordered whitebait and fish and chips main. Starter came within a few minutes on a single sslate and said the chefs done two portions on one plate. Ok so it was reasonable small for two but hey it was only a starter. Then we waited and after 45 mins asked if the food was coming and told its a big piece of fish it has to cook. ( yes we had ordered the large size). Another 15 mins went by and we paid up and left. No idea if the food is good or bad but the service is rubbish.

Although we booked and left a message to say 14 of us were coming, they were not expecting us - nevertheless, the staff went above and beyond and we were all fed and watered. The chef kept up updated on how long the food would be, and was the only one cooking that evening. The age range was from age 1 to 70, 6 of which were children. The fish and chips was amazing, the fish having just been delivered as we arrived - the chef even came out and gave all the children an ice lolly once they had all finished. None of us are from the area, but if we were, we would return without a doubt.

We descended on the place with 14 of us including six kids from 1 - 11. After a little bit of reshuffling tables we were all comfortably accommodated in their lounge and the kids went out to play in the garden while we waited for the food. It took a little while which was to be expected after we turned up with a small army, and when it arrived it was all excellent. It was fish and chip night, with the fish being delivered fresh just as we arrived, and most of the adults in our party went with that and all thought it was fantastic. I went with their 'Legendary Burger' and know that it's easy for a burger to be overdone, especially when it's busy, but that wasn't an issue here and it was great. One of the best pub grub burgers I've had in ages. Ice lollies arrived for all the kids at the end and more playing in the beer garden before heading back to our hotel.

Quite a steep rise into the car park which may make it tricky for people with walking disabilities, but should be OK if you arrive early enough. Warm welcome at the bar. Decent range of beers, but the big surprise was the menu, which was much more interesting and extensive than I had anticipated - and yet good value. I went for a sirloin steak, which proved to be a first-class piece of meat, done exactly right medium rare, with well-planned trimmings. We were drawn to this place from outside the area from the taste tastecard app, although unfortunately the barmaid told us they don't take tastecard which was a shame. However the food here was mouthwatering and due to the reasonable prices we plan to visit regularly from now on. It is a very small pub but this adds to the charm with a real open fire which makes it extra cosy. One negative is the soft drinks are out of a bottle and aren't refrigerated. I don't tend to have ice as it waters down the drink but I had to have it on this occasion. Overall though this pub is a gem of a find and you will not be disappointed with the food.

We had the most wonderful breakfast at the Moon & Stars on Saturday and enjoyed leisurely reading a selection of newspapers in front of the log fire. My eggs benedict was one of the nicest I have eaten and the full English was lovely. Highly recommend this traditional quaint village pub and the fine cuisine produced by it's new chef Grae.

With the new chef Grae Conyers at the helm, dinner was mouth watering delicious. King Prawn and Mussel medley as a starter and the most tender lamb cutlets I have tasted. The fish and chips were also of a superior quality. All at a price that won't break the bank balance.

We popped in thinking we would grab a quick bite to eat as we were getting hungry and had just arived at the cottage a few doors up that we had rented for Christmas. We received a warm and friendly welcome. Even though 2 out of the 3 staff hadn't turn in for work and it was only the new chef/manager there, he spent the time to chat to us and help my kids decide on what to eat. Even though the menu looked amazing I went for what I thought would be a simply cheese burger! Oh how I was very wrong, it was amazing and the best homemade burger I've ever had... After we had finished eating the manager came over with 2 glasses of prosseco on the house and wished us a merry Christmas. We will definitely be back and I wish there was more warm and welcome pubs like this one still. We 100% recommend a visit to this pub and the locals were very friendly and chatty

Spotted this little pub on Trip Advisor, the reviews were good so we decided to check it out.My partner and I have been to a good 50 pubs in the last year seeking the perfect most scrumptious Sunday roast and so, to a certain extent, consider ourselves amateur connoisseurs when it comes to roast potatoes, beef and gravy. All I can say is that whilst the meal was a little rustic looking I can not begin to tell you how tasty it was. We had rib of beef carved off the bone and served in a large Yorkshire pudding with roast potatoes and veg, and it was AMAZING!!I cannot recommend this pub for their roasts highly enough, the meal was huge and very good value and the BEST gravy I think I have ever tasted. Long may the new chef continue there I would be VERY happy to go back.

What can i actually say lol i am appauled at how a country pub can actually have the audicity to be happy with servin this crap up. Booked a table a few days before only to be informed when we got there the chef was ill and that all had was a roast with all the trimmings lol fake chicken 3 potatos that tasted a week old and a few carrots and some brown and yellow coloured broccoli heads with gravy you could of used for filling in pot holes. So no starters no afters and not even a sauce in site to mask the discusting taste. Should of known when we pulled up on a sunday and the car park was empty that we should of left the car park completely empty. Ruined our day out was in and out the house with in an hour now gonna have to waste another 40 pound on a take away at least ill no what im gettin i guess . AVOID ...carzy of a place

It is always with some apprehension that you revisit a restaurant to sample the dishes of a new chef when you have been so impressed in the past.I visited the restaurant with my family last night on the New Chef's 1st night and was very pleasantly surprised. The portions were sensibly sized and the Lamb and Seabass we sampled were cooked to perfection. We understand more Fish is going to be added to the menu together with some very reasonably priced lunchtime specials. Highly recommended.

The quintessential English country pub, it's small, with low ceilings & beams and out in the countryside. The staff were very friendly and open, taking time to engage in conversation with us. The food was of a different class to normal pub fare in that the chef really seemed committed to an excellent customer experience. The food arrived quickly, was piping hot and looked very appetising. The Sausage & Mash came with red cabbage, fried onions, carrots, green beans and cauliflower all of which were excellently cooked. The price per plate was very good value and the portion size was generous.Scott, the chef decides the menu at the start of the day depending on what ingredients are on hand and if you don't like his choice, provided he does have the ingredients he'll cook what you want!On Wednesdays they have live music in the bar. This pub is 7-10 minutes drive from Baldock and is a bit out of the way, however they have a bookable, free, pub coach for parties of 8+ which collects and returns customers to Baldock. The combination of service, product and environment makes this a desirable place to return to.

Having called on the Saturday to discover we were too late to book a table as they were already full, we decided to book in for Sunday lunch the next day.On arrival we were slightly concerned that we were the only diners and when presented with the menu, we discovered that there were no vegetarian starters and only a risotto (beetroot, parmesan & artichoke). Disappointment quickly rising, we had no choice but to ask if there was any other options available. Within minutes the chef himself was sitting aside us, offering to cook absolutely anything I would like so long as he had the ingredients. I went from having very little to too much choice! I decided to have a starter portion of the risotto followed by stuffed mushrooms with their Sunday lunch option. My partner chose the whitebait followed by the lamb Sunday lunch.I had mentioned to the waitress that I wouldn't be keen on the risotto for the main course as I'm not the biggest fan of artichoke (when ordering for the starter I had decided to just pick it out rather than make more of a fuss!). The waitress went above and beyond and informed the chef, as such, my risotto arrived minus artichokes and was absolutely delicious, perfect portion size and one of the nicest risottos I've ever eaten. My partner's whitebait arrived & was also exceptional, the salad included blueberries and raspberries which complemented the crispy breadcrumbed fish beautifully. The homemade tartare sauce was also delicious, his only comment was that perhaps the portion size was slightly too generous for a starter. The main courses arrived promptly. Two huge plates piled high, lamb for Himself & stuffed mushrooms for me.The Yorkshire puddings had the perfect gooey base & crispy edges, the red cabbage was incredible, the roast potatoes crunchy outside - fluffy inside, broccoli & cauliflower with the just right amount of bite & carrots packed with flavour - all accompanied with a vegetarian gravy (I was particularly happy with this as I often have to miss out on meat based gravy). My stuffed mushrooms were lovely, two huge mushrooms packed with broccoli, rice & parmesan. Himself reports the lamb was very good, lean and packed with flavour. For dessert we decided to share the Key Lime Pie with ice cream, to be honest we probably should have passed on the dessert given the size of the main but I'm asucker for a key lime pie and my god, I'm glad we did. It was AMAZING! Throughly impressed with the service & the quality of food, the chef in particular was so amenable, the manager/owner couldn't have been more professional & the waitress was efficient, polite & helpful.Total bill was £56 (2 x staters, 2 x mains, 1 x desserts, 2 x pints & 3 x ginger beers), I checked the bill to see if they had missed anything - they hadn't! You simply can't argue the value for money! I suppose the only criticisms would be that they didn't note I was vegetarian when we called to booked despite us asking about the vegetarian options, saying that, given the wonderful service from the chef and the manager it more than makes up for this tiny issue. Aside from that the young lady waitress could perhaps do with a little more guidance in customer service as she was a little curt with other diners that arrived after us but again, that's splitting a very fine hair in what was overall exceptional meal and faultless service.

Not perhaps the very best meal I've ever had but close to it. The starter was smoked salmon with special salad leaves and was delicious, followed by sea bass fillets with fragrant rice, fine beans and a gorgeous sauce. Certainly as good as any I've had anywhere. None of us had room for a pudding so I can't comment on those.

We called in here prior to going on a ramble from the pub and to book the pub up for a walk with a larger group we are leading in a couple of weeks time. This is a typical country local; quiet and peaceful, but full of character - including low doorways (apparently ok for the average height drinker of 5'3" when the pub was built in the 17th century!), so mind your bonce! The food was simple but tasty and plentiful and there were a couple of good real ales on offer. Looking forward to going back in a couple of weeks.

Having decided to take a walk and pub stop in the area of Rushden, we found the Moon and Stars in the village of Rushden and had the Sunday Roast. Very small pub area but friendly staff although not "in your face", it did take a bit of time to order dessert! However the Roast Lamb was just what I needed, having had no breakfast I was really hungry. Lots of lamb, plenty of carrots - whole carrots - not bits & pieces and quarter of cauliflower, green beans and lovely roast potatoes. O not forgetting the Yorkshire Pud!!! Could have done with a touch more seasoning if I am to be picky…...

A very mediocre experience sadly for Sunday lunch. Staff had no awareness of food intolerances & what the pub menu consisted of. Even gave misleading advice about 'safe' food choices. The roast lamb was quite nice & was accompanied by a good selection of vegetables but the whole meal was tepid at best. The sea bass was tasteless & oily. No desserts suitable for wheat or gluten intolerant customers. What a disappointment. We had high hopes. Sorry!

on route to Stevenage, took a turn of the A10 to find somewhere for a quick lunch. After travelling along some very narrow road, we came across the Moon &Stars.Dog friendly which was a real plus. Speaking to the people in the bar, it was evident this was a real centre of the village. Good ales, only had a sandwich ( as we had a meal booked for the evening), but it was superb, more than enough for two. A real gem of a find, a pub like pubs used to be. Spoke to a local about the nursery next door, very knowledgeable and helpful with advise about plants. We will visit again when we are in the area. Please note the roads are narrow.

Having know the Moon and Stars all my adult life I have had good and bad experiences here over the past 30-40 years, latterly the "village local" had become a cold unwelcoming place! However a revisit for Sunday Lunch with family was a great surprise, we had heard of the change of ownership, new chief etc but had treated this news with some suspicion! On arrival the log fire was alight, customers were clearly enjoying themselves, staff were engaging, all a huge difference from our last visit. We chose the traditional lunch, portions were large, especially the meat (both the lamb and beef were very tender and well cooked), Yorkshire Puddings home made and great gravy etc. Service was swift but not obtrusive, the chief and new owner both visited our table to check all was well!At £90.00 for 4 including a couple of puddings, coffee and drinks we did not feel short changed. We look forward to our return visit both to eat and as the village local!

I tried sushi for the first time and really enjoyed it (marinated beef rather than fish). Every body enjoyed their food. Two drinks, starter and main plus coffee for £25 per head. Good value for money. We will be back

I've enjoyed several meals over the last year at this hidden away pub between Buntingford and Baldock, but have to say that recent changes have taken this from standard pub grub to a more gourmet experience. Under new ownership, the pub has brought in a new chef who is introducing a higher quality of dining experience. I enjoyed a late dinner (after a long day at the office) and although I went for one of the plainer options on the menu, it was thoroughly delicious - and note the fact that the sauce (tartar in this case) was not out of a jar but made from scratch and absolutely delicious. The options on the menu are not extensive, but what is excellent is that the chef, Scott, will aim to accommodate guests who may ask for something off menu. And his creations not only taste gorgeous but look amazing too.The pub continues to be a warm and friendly venue with a good choice of beers and the manager, Keith, is always ready with a warm welcome. I'm really looking forward to my next visit when I shall plunge more thoroughly into the gourmet route less travelled. Can't wait.Oh - and having seen the Christmas menu, I don't think this will disappoint!!!
