It was my wife’s birthday and we wanted to try somewhere new and the Monty was recommended. We were not disappointed. It was a Tuesday lunch and there were quite a few people dining in the bar creating a nice atmosphere and we managed to get a table right next to a lovely log fire. The menu is varied supplemented by a specials board. My wife chose shoulder of pork and I had the lamb. Both were served quickly, hot and a generous portion and were excellent. Puddings followed of course. Prices on par. To cut it short, lovely food, service and surroundings, will definitely visit again.

We had an great Sunday lunch at the Monty yesterday. The food was excellent and served hot - we had roast lamb, roast beef and the nut roast - all delicious. There was a real buzz as the pub was full - I'd recommend booking ahead to avoid disappointment. The pub has loads of parking space and the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. We had three dogs with us which was no problem in the cellar bar. What a great place to meet grandparents on their way past Oundle to a holiday destination. Thank you to the team for a great experience!

We had two excellent sirloin steaks today and were very impressed. Decided to call in here for lunch and so pleased we did. The food was superb and they have a good range of beers and wines. There was a vibrant and friendly vibe and it was busy when we arrived. This is a pub but service was actually better than we had experienced at a hotel in Uppingham on the previous Sunday! We could see how hard the staff were working and they were all brilliant. We have been before but always as larger walking groups but we shall return again very soon - very impressed!

A party of 6 booked for New Year’s Eve. For £35 a head we had 3 courses, fireworks at midnight and a disco until 2am. The food was excellent, a simple menu, sharing board to start, choice of beef or salmon for main and a trio of desserts. Could not fault the food and service. Excellent evening, thanks to everyone involved.

Had a really average Sunday roast today. My mum's home raost so much more flavoursome, I am reminded why I rarely risk anyone else's. Seriously you cannot charge £18 for ropey roast potatoes (zero crisp, more like the frozen variety, maybe they were!!), tasteless veg apart from the red cabbage which was the most flavoursome thing on the plate and an average tasting, nearly over-cooked, Supreme of Chicken - drop the supreme, it's irrelevant and there is nothing supreme about it. How about a richer gravy, how about some lovely herby stuffing, some cauliflower cheese? My mum had lamb, she said it was a bit tough. And our friend agreed with the general assessment apart from the sticky toffee pudding which she really enjoyed. Yay. Dessert - the chocolate mouse and accompaniments way over sweet and regrettable now, some hours later. And sorry to be on such a downer but service was mediocre and robotic too. Zero finesse. Talk to me, look me in the eye when you speak to me, don't turn and walk away at the same time as saying, 'have a good afternoon'. It means nothing. One of the party, said, oh they're young. They were, very, but if they are keen and trained properly it doesn't matter how old they are. And noone said goodbye on the way out when we walked by. Two big parties used the next door table twice during our time there and it was very hard to hear our own conversations, made harder for older folk, even with their hearing aids! Times are tough for everyone, it's pricey to go out so it needs to be quality all round if I'm going back. That said the place was busy so maybe we just expect a higher standard than some. I have worked in the business, have chefs in my family so I am not speaking without experience.

The Montagu Arms catered our 60th birthday celebration lunch for 70 people at the adjacent Village Hall. We cannot rate or recommend it too highly - Ian was a dream to liaise with (absolutely nothing was too much trouble), the food was superb - tasty, hot, efficient and fuss-free. Dietary requirements were hassle free and our guests were without exception enormously complimentary. Thanks to The Monty, our event was a huge success. Thank you!

This was our first visit, and it was based on a review I had seen sometime in the past (can’t remember where or when), but it turned out to be accurate, as we really enjoyed it. It’s a lovely pub in a great village setting with a large car park, big outdoor areas and lots of rooms inside with some nice cosy tables etc. – we ate in the bar area. The staff were excellent, really friendly and helpful and the food was very good too and very well priced at £16 for two courses and £20 for three courses (none of the dishes were individually priced, but I did order aside portion of chips!) – that may just be a mid week price, I’m not sure. The Barnwell Bitter beer was absolutely excellent – we will return :-)

We read that this was a place to go - voted #1. Four of us went for lunch which was disappointing to say the least. Our friends live not far from the Montagu. Two had the crab cakes starter. Not really crab cakes but potatoe cakes, with gritty lettuce. A Caesar salad with chicken was gritty leaves (not Romaine lettuce) and a small sliced piece of chicken. When the waitress was told, she did (sort of) apologise and assured us the lettuce had been washed and the cook advised. The burger was at best OK - the onion ring was swimming in oil. The pork tenderloin over cooked and dry. The steak and chips was OK, though at £22.50 and an extra £4 for sauce......The restaurant was busy, so perhaps we were just unlucky. Many years since we were there and will be a while before we return.

Rather disappointed on our second night of having a meal there. Unfortunately there was a very large party on the second evening, and we were booked the same time as the party. We had to wait one hour and a quarter for our meal and the party had nearly finished the theirs. Surely we should have been served first as only 3 of us. Did not finish meal as our evening was ruined.

We’ve been once before about 2 years ago before they refurbed. We were not disappointed. 4 Sunday dinners served to perfection as well as two kids meals. Friendly staff behind the bar as well as waiting tables and a view out of the rear of the conservatory that is amazing. Unfortunately it was too wet to go and use the new play area but it looks like a professional job and could be lots of fun. 6 meals with several rounds of drinks came to just over £130 which we thought was very reasonable. I just ate at the Montagu Arms with my family and in-laws, after they selected the venue. Since I am holidaying next week I thought I would be good and have the ploughmans and my wife had the halloumi salad. Both were around the £10-11 mark. The ploughmans was pitiful, a couple of small slices of cheese, some ham, two lettuce leaves, some hard butter straight out of the fridge (an amateur mistake), a bad chutney, a dusting of pear, and a small slice of bread cut in two. Probably £1.50 in terms of ingredient costs. The halloumi salad my wife had consisted some salad leaves, some seriously overcooked halloumi, roasted peppers out of a jar, and no salad dressing (seriously!). The open toasties my in-laws looked ok, but for £6.50 - is a single slice of bread with a bit if ham on covered by cheese, with some salad (more than in the ploughmans!), good value for money? I think not. By that point there was no way I was paying for a desert but the in-laws and wife had (very small) Eton mess - assembled rather than made in house from the look of it, and the ice cream at £2 per scoop....... The only part of the meal that was as I would have expected it to be was the kids scampi and chips, which was more filling that all of the adult mains. With drinks we ended up paying £90 for the whole meal which left me feeling sufficiently angry that I have taken the time to write this review. The Montagu itself is a nice looking pub and the service was good but the 'chefs' really need to think again about the salad-based mains. Customers want good value, service, and to not be still hungry when they get home having coughed up ninety quid.

We chose the monty for my fiancé’s birthday meal as we loved it previously. We had a table booked. As we arrived, we were ignored. We told the waiter we had a table booked and he just said ‘sit over there at the back’- didn’t smile or even show us to our table. The two courses we had were lovely but the service was extremely poor! We waited so long between courses, we waited 40mins to give our order for dessert, by which point, we didn’t bother as we had been sat there for ages and just wanted to get home. Our waiter, a guy whose name I didn’t get, didn’t even ask once how our food was, give even a hint of a smile, or interact in any way, shape or form and all the extra glasses were never cleared from our table. I’m quite easy going when it comes to service but this truly was awful and ruined the evening a little. It’s fine, we left without dessert and didnt pay for a tip. Saved us some money in the end at least.

Inside the bar areas are quaint and the restaurant area is attached to the rear of the pub. There is a decent selection of beers and the usual soft drinks. Our party consisted of 24 persons. Most of the restaurant was taken over by us. The Landlord took our orders for both a starter and main course. Three of the four of us requested Sea Bass. Some time later we were informed that only one Sea Bass left so three of us changed to the Sunday Roast Beef. Our starters arrived in reasonable time. Three of us went for Asparagus Tips and one for Prawn Cocktail. One Lady complained that there were only stalks and no tips on her plate. In fairness all our starters were very delicious.

went to the nursery just up the road to get some fruit bushes and booked into the pub for lunch.when we walked in what a shock to find a little village pub full to the brim with people, all eating and drinking something we haven't seen for a very long time.it looked very positive and couldn't wait to try the food.we were not disappointed the goat cheese and soup for starters were delicious and the main of lamb was also delicious.the staff were run off their feet but were so friendly.would we visit again most definitely.

What a delightful stop, lovely old buildings set just beside a little bridge, picture postcard stuff. Very helpful staff, we only ordered a simple lunch but the food came quickly, was really tasty with generous portions. Well worth a visit!

No pensaré volver! !

What a stunner, quintessentially English country pub with exposed beams and a landlord and landlady on top of there game. There is a great selection of ales and wines on offer along with a varied and traditional menu featuring traditional classic cuisine such as steak and ale pie along with sea bream fillet , funny enough these are what we ordered ,beautifully cooked and the portions were just right ,expertly delivered to our table by a beautiful and charming waitress ,all in all lovely pub ,lovely food and not overpriced ,well worth a visit ,

Very excited that we've found the perfect night out. The service was incredible, the food was delicious, the wine and drinks brilliant, the atmosphere just perfect. I think this could be the best find for a night out anywhere in the area. Plus the best Espresso Martini I've ever had. Planning the next visit already, thank you so much x

We stayed here on two occasions, in our campervan to the rear of inn. Quiet and good location. We enjoyed a nights sleep during both our stays. The staff at the inn are fabulous, welcoming and friendly and the owners are really doing a great job. The food was delicious and the ambiance of the inn was just what you’d hope for, log fire burning in the hearth, dog friendly and lots of positive chatter. I’d recommend this as a stopover and eatery.

I was taken here for afternoon tea by my friend. The whole event was great from start to finish. Excellent selection including sandwiches, mini quiche, crisps, cakes, lemon posset, meringues and scones with cream and jam - all decorated beautifully with edible flowers and pea shoots. I have since been lucky enough to experience afternoon tea at Bettys in York and The Dorchester …..The Boxwood Tea far outshone both of these. Would highly recommend.
