Star & Garter in East Northamptonshire

Came down to stay for weekend and tried to go for a drink on Friday night at 10pm and again on Saturday night at 8.45 pm and it was closed. Are they permanently shut now?

When I rang to book a table for 3 I was told that there was a limited menu, due to the last day of cooking before a summer break. I said that would be fine for us. Our table was waiting for us, and we ordered drinks at the bar before sitting down. Although not as much to choose from as in previous visits, there really was enough choice for us. Items marked with * were part of the Diamond choice. Senior choices, two meals for £18.00. My friend had scampi, I had steak pie, and our other friend has Chinese curry. Quick service, and very nice plates full of food. The only vegetable was peas - hey ho! I asked for extra gravy & got a jug full. Chips were big & fat. We sat for ages afterwards, just chatting as you do. A really lovely lunch treat for us, in pleasant surroundings with friendly service. Well done!

everything was going so well… great chips, food looked great… until I went for my 1st bite of the “steak an ale pie” where my poor teeth discovered a lump of plastic that has broken the corner off my tooth …it was obvious that it was a piece of utensil that had broken off in the home made pie even the waitress agreed… the lovely waitress done all she could the poor girl (left by everyone else to deal with this yet she didn’t make the pie) … no one else even came over to check or apologise or help …. I had to go and ask for my bill at the bar I was left sat so long with my broken tooth!! bunch of cowards who hide in kitchen, waitress kept going to the kitchen to speak with her manager for ages at a time… yet another member of staff at the bar advised the managers not here can’t speak to me or help HOPEFULLY THEY'VE GOT INSURANCE Rude and not very polite, super clicky so if your an outsider don’t bother and take a dental plan out before hand it’s needed

Bank Holiday Monday, I didn't think we would get a table, but I'm extremely glad we did!!!!!! Staff were welcoming, helpful, friendly, and very professional. The food was outstanding, and I am looking forward to our next visit!!

Went there for a few drinks whilst working and steam and country show up the road and the young lady behind the bar was really welcoming and a great edition to the pub

Lovely pub in a quiet village. We stopped for a spot of lunch on a Saturday, the pub was quiet, the service was outstanding, the food was delicious, and very reasonably priced.

Change of venue for our monthly or so old work mates meal. Friendly staff. Food was spot on and very reasonably priced. Service was top notch.

We visit the star and garter quite often. We usually have roast of the day. Today we had roast gammon and fresh vegetables, and as normal was excellent.

Arrived only to be told there was not a table reserved for us so we needed to eat in the bar. No apology. Time to pay the bill which was more than it should have been. Was told we did not say we were diamond although we did but because there were 2 servers who clearly don't speak to each other we were overcharged. That's OK we tended to go to this pub on a regular basis but definitely will not be returning!!!!

A hidden Jem. Found this place by chance and loved it the minute we walked in. True country pub, great food and very friendly service. Will be going back again.

Have visited this pub several times over the years but unfortunately we won't be returning. There was a problem with heating and they had run out of logs for the open fire. Not sure why someone couldn't pop to the nearest fuel station and buy some logs! So we sat in our coats and awaited our food. What a disappointment. The steak and ale pie was just a pile of mush. The steak burger was cold , the Goan curry seemed to be ok and was tasty. Finally my homemade lasagne looked very uninspiring and tasted bland. To top it off I have spent most of the night on the toilet with an upset stomach. I know times are tough and running a pub isn't easy but it just seemed like these people really don't care.

The absolute worst food I've EVER encountered bar none that left three of our party with stomach ache. We all got together a couple of weeks ago as a family reunion after many years of not seeing each other. We were told 3 weeks in advance to order our food ( Christmas menu ) ..So most of us had the beef ( Big mistake ) and two had turkey. The beef itself was so microwaved it could've easily been used as a pair of spare shoes. Vegetables... ( How can anyone get those wrong ? This place can. Sprouts and Potatoes were like canon balls .. Totally, inedible and raw. Turkey was not fresh at all, as was NONE of the other ingredients. The fact that the whole pub was completely empty ( apart from us, should have given the game away. ( Why the rush to order) Tables were disgusting with bottles of vinegar on each table. Damp stinking carpets and dirty glasses. I was overwhelmed by the state of this place and how ANYONE could sell food of any description. YOU should be totally ashamed of yourselves for selling rotten food to the public. At the time, we were so embarrassed that the older member had booked this place ( purely on memory) .. That nothing was mentioned at the time, as we didn't want to cause any stress to them. BUT rest assured I'LL be sending in someone to investigate this matter further ( As you should NOT be allowed to get away with selling such food to the general public.. Don't bother either with the lame answer of ( We will be using this mail to improve our service, Or, you should've mentioned this at the time.. because I've already explained why we could not. Why did you want us to pre order two weeks before ?? Ill tell you why .. It's so you could go to Iceland, get the ingredients frozen. Then employ ( Joe the road sweeper on the day to come in and pop it into a microwave.. Unbelievable disgusting attempt of cooking ... A top tip.. Leave the food out from your pub. .. There is absolutely NOTHING that you could say to make this right. As YOU got it wrong and judging by some of the other reviews left .. You ALWAYS do ...100% Star and Garter Chelveston

We had a lovely 3 course Xmas meal Absolutely delicious

Went with the family this evening for the ‘burger and pint’; new in was the battered portobello mushroom burger. Absolutely amazing and a lovely little ‘surprise’ when cutting in - you will need a set of cutlery to tackle this one 😉

Wednesday night is Burger and Beer for £10. This is the second week of the running of this promotion and I have had two different burgers. First I had was Korean BBQ Spiced chicken and this weeks Chinese Pork Cracker. Both of these burgers were superb and full of flavour and I would highly recommend them, as I did last night when other customers asked about them. Well done team Star and Garter.

Seemed surprisingly quiet when we got there for a Sunday lunch time. By the time we left we knew why. In general I think we enjoyed our starters. (There were 16 of us) The mains were very disappointing. The plates for a cold and a beef was tough and overdone.

It's a nice quiet pub staff was good just a shame food wasn't as hot as plates and shame they didn't cook the veg couldn't cut mine with knife think it was run under hot tap for 10 mins sorry didn't like it

My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic steak dinner last nigh, cooked by Malah. Highly recommend the squid and stuffed pepper starters too.

1st visit to this very old pub, in a lovely village as we meet friends from further north and this is about halfway for us all. We choose to try here as dogs very welcome and saves having to leave him at home all day. On entering pub, busy with people having a Sunday lunchtime drink. Staff very welcming and friendly and nothing too much trouble. Small menu but a nice selection of starters and desserts. Only told there was Sunday roast (not sure if specials are on offer), however roast beef, chicken or turkey was fine with all 4 of us. Starters of crispy mushrooms and chicken goujons were the right size and very tasty. Beef was cooked to my liking and not too pink. The dining area soon filled up so can see why they perhaps choose not to have an extensive menu to cope with, Desserts lovely and we were allowed both cream and ice cream. Food was served relatively quickly so not too long waiting to eat. The only downside for a couple of those in our group who found the potatoes a bit over done, Our small dog who had been lying patiently whilst we eat enjoyed our meal and he got to finish the roast we didn't eat (in his dish not of a plate). Had to take 1 star oof as ladies facilities were a bit poor. One cubicle had no paper and the other you could not retrieve and no soap to wash hands with. Didn't get chance to let someone know as busy we we were leaving but I am sure had we had chance to mention it, they would have been sorted quite swiftly.

Just had lunch there. Really lovely food reasonably priced food and lovely staff.

We arrived on Saturday for the Cyclekart event on the Sunday. We stayed locally in our motorhome. We had an evening meal which was excellent, great value for money and washed down by several pints of cider and ale from the good range of beers available. The service was excellent and the ambience of the pub superb. The cyclekart racing was great fun with a BBQ in the afternoon and a collection for the Air Ambulance. Great pub run by lovely people

We ordered mushrooms and the brie for a starter 3 pie and a fish for the mains ,dispite the restaurant being full the food turned up quickly ,very hot and tasty.very good prices,definately will return

Wouldn't even make 2 hungry bikers a ham sandwich because they were 'fully booked'. Disappointing when I thought most pubs were struggling for business.

I had recommended this restaurant as it had always been excellent. I was not only disappointed, but embarrassed by our meals this time, sadly! The family that started with garlic mushrooms found them too hard to eat and slightly burnt and if you tried to cut them open they shattered everywhere. They weren’t garlicky at all! You had to dip into a pot of aioli to get any sort of garlic taste! The ones that ordered lasagne had a very small portion. The ones that had roast beef found again it was very over cooked so making it very tough to cut. Also the Yorkshire puddings were very over cooked and almost burnt. There was a large amount of beef slices though, which could have made two meals. I was sorry they didn’t offer a doggy bag! Pity about it all being overcooked! I’m sorry to have to give this review as we’ve always rated you highly before and I realise you may be struggling! Good apart we noted that with a few more tweaks you could easily make it five star!

Disappointing visit as it's a really nice pub in a great location. Positives were Plenty of parking, and easy to find. The friendly welcome, and lovely waitresses, who were efficient and helpful. Nice dining area. Negatives were Food overcooked, especially the beef, which was virtually uneatable. The men's toilet cubicle, which was filthy. A lot of black mould everywhere, and even a brown coloured wall. No paper towels. Overall a poor experience. Put these negatives right and it would be at least a 4* or even a 5*. I don't like leaving a negative review, but it is a realistic one. I would urge the owner to deal with the issues, as no one likes negativity. Good luck in the future.

First time visiting here and ordered chicken goujons as a starter and a cheeseburger and chips for main, partner ordered a roast. Goujons were amazing! Cheeseburger on the other hand was terrible. It was a frozen burger which was extremely disappointing and unexpected, partners gammon was very fatty and the potatoes were undercooked. Overall service was good and quick and the atmosphere had a very good family feel however the food was an huge let down.

Steak pie with suet pastry 10/10. Friendly staff, will return.

We have been here several times in the past and always had a nice Sunday lunch but today was definitely different to previous experiences. The carrots were so hard we had to leave them (I do appreciate some people do like hard carrots), I don't eat broccoli so was just left with peas, 3 roast potatoes, a Yorkshire and some chicken which was a bit grisly. I should have asked for more gravy as there was just a small splash on our plates so made everything a little dry. The people who had gammon said the gammon was nice and cooked well. My daughter had the nut roast as she fancied a veggie roast dinner but it was more like a biryani. We did query this and was told it was a Moroccan nut roast. We shared our Yorkshire pudding with her as she didn't get one, just vegetables. On a positive the starters and deserts were both nice. The cream of leek soup was very tasty.

Just had an excellent lunch at this homely friendly bar. Booked again for evening meal. Homemade food and excellent selection of drinks.

We had a family gathering on the 4th February for a 70th birthday meal, and even though we have been a number of times over the years, I have to say it never disappoints when we gather here. Thank you 😊

Very well cooked food, which was delicious and well priced. Service was friendly, polite and quick. We will definitely be returning for another visit with our family.

Well every time we visit the food can’t be faulted - Steak and Ale pie is always tasty , meat tender and piping hot , service excellent and consistently good here , it’s what I call proper pub food with probably the best Guinness in the area - our go to pub for food and drink

It was fully booked and they staff where amazing to fit us in on late notice. Food was lovely and the locals where very welcoming.

We have visited this pub three times in December and January for an evening meal. There is a great selection of beers and larger. There are plenty of choices on the menu and also a special board of extra options. The meals are lovely, tasty and hot. The service is excellent and the meals are fantastic value. We will return again in the near future.

The food was very good and at a very fair price. The portions were about the right size too. Rather busy on a Saturday evening with several tables occupied as well as a good crowd in the bar. Good humour among the staff and a good experience all round.

What a fabulous pub! It was my birthday & Niamh & her staff were the best! ! 25 of us had a delicious meal followed by music & dancing . She put up birthday decs and made it such a brilliant night. Recommend this pub so much , even if you’re popping in for a drink such a cosy welcoming village pub with a great atmosphere ❤️

We booked here for a birthday meal for my mum. Surroundings were warm and welcoming and the staff were friendly. We ordered a fillet steak to be cooked rare, a lasagne, a gammon and a scampi. The gammon and scampi were both good but the steak was well done and the peas cold. The lasagne looked as if it was overcooked, not a lot of meat in it and was hard to cut. This was passed onto the waitress who seemed a little uncomfortable being told this but offered no remedy to the situation. The 4 meals with 2 drinks (two others had been paid for prior to the tab being set up) came to just under £60 which had the food been all ok, would have been reasonable. Unfortunately, we will not be revisiting here for food again

Having visited here before for a birthday celebration decided to make another visit. Although the atmosphere was good the food was rather disappointing. The fish batter although crispy was on the overcooked side, chips were excellent so in a way made up for this. Desserts were slightly better apart from the crumbles which were only partially eaten. All in all as stated earlier the visit was disappointing for the food but cannot knock the friendly atmosphere. Also a pity that the live entertainment was on the loud side which led to all having to shout to have conversations.

A lovely pub that has always had a good reputation for nice food and relaxed atmosphere. Great for bikers also that want a quick pitstop on their village rides.

The last time I was there for lunch with friends I had fish and chips with peas,well the fish was OK but they changed to those enormous chips ,sorry but I just don't like them at all.

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want fancy food with a flare, it's probably not for you. BUT, this pub serves good quality, simple, great value for money pub grub. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and I wasn't afraid of going hungry.

Took my friend out last we were undecided as to where to go. We ended up here. Then we couldn’t decide what to eat. In the end, on the advice of a concerned onlooker we went for shared started and fish shop plater to arrive at the same time so we could share. Well the food was enough to feed a small army but I’m never one to turn down a challenge! The food was amazing, so that even when you are beyond full you keep picking. Chef you are amazing. Presented beautifully tasted amazing. Can’t wait to come back. (Once this food coma has worn off). Great service. You won’t be disappointed!!!

Visited for Steak night with family who were visiting for the weekend. We had fillet with beetroot prawns or plain Tempura Prawns and the steaks were cooked to perfection as each was cooked slightly different to individual taste. Couldn’t fault anything , really good quality...

It's udderly brilliant! This was a return visit. Another great selection of cuts of beef and sides to choose from. Our Côte de boeuf was cooked to perfection. Great service, great atmosphere, great value. We'll be back!

Had such a lovely evening for their steak night on Saturday! The food was delicious and cooked to perfection! The bar staff were so lovely and welcoming! Thoroughly enjoyed evening! Would definitely recommend and visit again! Maybe next week for the fish night?

I visited with my family for steak night and it was amazing. My Cote de Boeuf was cooked to perfection and the staff were attentive throughout the evening. I will be sure to visit again. I would highly recommend. Thank you Star & Garter!
