We come to Broadhempston on holiday each year and every time we visit the Monks Retreat for dinner. Sadly this experience was not a good one. We had a lovely waitress and ordered our meal, I ordered the sirloin steak as it was the last steak available and it was inedible. This was not the issue, why ask your staff to check if our food is ok, if when told no the steak is not ok, they do nothing? We were then left without being asked if we would like dessert and not even an apology offered. Such a shame that the staff seem to spend all their time sat on their phones rather than caring for their customers.

This amazing place was recommended by a friend and is a perfect rural pub. We knew as soon as we were greeted by the smiling staff that we were in for a treat. The menu was an interesting mix of pub classics and some more unusual dishes; ours were expertly cooked by a talented chef. The hake in tomato sauce was delicious, while my wife loved her gammon, which was served with fresh pineapple and egg. There is a choice of desserts, all of which are made on the premises. The selection is not huge, but is appropriate for a modest country inn. The atmosphere was friendly and clearly popular with the locals. This was our first visit, and definitely not our last, although it is a considerable distance from home. Many thanks to the staff for giving us a memorable evening.

Pretty place, lovely staff and a fantastic chef. Been twice - partner claimed best pie ever - and he has sampled a few! Lamb rump beautiful. Went back for Sunday roast and it was delicious - meat spot on gorgeous (beef pink and tender - pork belly melting and crispy) roasties and parsnips fab with a lovely selection of veg and proper cauliflower cheese and all very reasonable. We will definitely be going back - an absolute gem 😁😍

We spent a few days away in Broadhempston and visited the Monks Retreat a couple of times for drinks and for an evening meal. Each time we visited, we were made to feel extremely welcome. The pub is dog friendly which is a massive bonus as well. The menu is small but provides a good selection, there is also a specials board that has a great variety. The food we had was really well prepared and delicious, I had a burger which was cooked to perfection and my wife had a thai inspired baked cod dish, which was fabulous. We cannot recommend the Monks Retreat highly enough, if you are in the area a visit is a must.

We visited on spec at lunchtime on 14 Feb. There were a few locals in the bar but nobody in the restaurant. We asked if food being served and assured it was we were seated at table of our choice. The menu was most interesting with a South African twist (new South African owners having taken over in January). My husband had spiced meat ‘cigars’ called bobotie and I had prawns baked in a rich cheese sauce. Both dishes delicious and reasonably priced for a light bite lunch. I also had one of the best chocolate brownie desserts I’ve had. Great to see a pub doing something different. We will definitely visit again.

I was pleased to see that there was a 'locals' bar area with not quite everything given over to eating, as so many have fallen into the trap of restaurants serving beer under duress nowadays.Regrettably we could not stop for a meal, however all food is home cooked, with an interestingly different menu at mostly reasonable prices. Not sure where they weighed the 8oz steaks but they appeared to suffered some shrinkage prior to arriving at our table: such a shame given we'd enjoyed some tasty platefuls in the past so we won't be patronising this charming and friendly pub until we read of more favourable reports. Good value for money with the bill coming to £66 inc drinks for four of us. We had some cold starters to share followed by the best mussels I've ever had. The source was creamy and full of flavour without being overly garlicky or rich. Mussels came with a huge portion of crunchy sweet potato fries, yummm! My partner had the chicken and mushroom pie which we he was very happy with, big portion, full of flavour, with a nice pastry. The gin selection was definitely an added bonus. We will definitely visit again next time we're in Devon, thanks for a lovely meal.

Perfect village pub. Not pretentious and serve lovely grub. We have had the fish and chips on a Wednesday a couple times and love it. The pub quiz is a real laugh too. Just what Broadhempston needed!

We enjoyed an excellent dinner here on the recommendation of a friend. The menu choice was relatively limited (there was almost as much on the specials board as the regular menu) but the quality couldn't be faulted. We were made to feel very welcome and the bill didn't break the bank either

Big group for a little pub. They coped fantastically. Initial drink service was a little slow. But everything else was spot on - friendly staff. Quality food. Whitebait starter was amazing. As was the kids garlic bread. Salmon main dish was great. And my wife's cauliflower and Stilton bake. Tiramisu pud really good as well. Originally we were told Apple crumble had run out. Chef then made it specially for 3 of our family. Lovely. Reasonable price. And a great pub quiz to boot. Excellent.

Four of us had a roast dinner at the monks retreat in Broadhempston, wonderful food at a good price, a pint of "Liquid Sunshine" from St Austell brewery, (real ale) all served up by really friendly staff. The oldy woldy inn is wonderfully furnished and you feel as though you are a local patron, the landlord and staff make you want to go there often, I'm sure we will, Wednesday evenings is fish and chip night, £6.00. and the portions you get, Well!! Go out and try for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Had a great opening evening at The Monks Retreat last night with a free buffet! The pub was completely full and had a great atmosphere to celebrate the new ownership! Also my partner and I were lucky enough to have a delicious Sunday roast today at a reasonable price! Would defiantly recommend now it has changed hands. Looking forward to see further improvements curtesy of the new owners. Safe to say two very happy customers.

After new management taking over in January 2016, this friendly village pub has undergone huge improvements. It has been renovated and redecorated sympathetically, without loosing its village pub charm. We had an excellent meal at a fair price. We shall look forward to returning soon.

What a disappointing experience. At least you can get a drink if you are underage, courtesy of the inept management. Though this is not so much fun if you prefer having a drink in the company of adults. On the plus side, savings can be made as they don't do food and with the barmaid pouring the spirits freely and not subject to any measurement. Next call trading standards.

The perfect spot for breakfast, coffee, lunch or dinner when in Shaldon. Service is superb, food offering has good choice, well cooked, reasonably priced. Absolutely love stopping for a coffee and cake on the terrace area overlooking the river. Can’t wait to go back,

We were welcomed by the head bar man, what a gentleman & a legend taking the time to talk to us. We had visited Buckfast Abbey & drove through this quaint little village, parked cheaply in the pay & display & popped into this small village pub. Great little traditional pub, pool table on the right hand side, very clean & throughout. Good selection of beer & ales. We sat in their well tendered gardens. Definitely recommend for a stop off.

A lovely much needed addition to this town! Always greeted with a smile and a chat. Friendly place to grab a bite to eat and drink. You never know what is going to be on the menu, always something a little bit different but usually a safe option for others wanting something more usual. However I would say a set menu is something this place could benefit from. Especially being a mum and wanting to take my child somewhere, it’s not always convenient to just see what’s on the board today, as it’s not always child friendly! But other than that it’s a nice little place that I hope sticks around for a while

There should be a government warning about this pub. You should be warned about how lovely it is. So nice to walk into a pub that's still a pub. It's how a pub should be. We went with friends for the first time last week and we will certainly visit again. Great atmosphere with friendly locals, lovely staff and then the food ‼️ OMG this is what pub food should be like. Fresh, cooked on site and a desperate Dan size portion. I could not recommend this pub any more. It's a proper pub with proper grub. Go you will love it.

We used to visit this place a lot under the previous owners as it was a fab place to bring our little one. Sadly we were sorely disappointed on our first trip under new ownership. The back “play” room was cold with no lights or background music and the few toys there were not in a good state at all. When we went to order food they said all they had on was hot drinks and cake. As we’d arrived with a hungry little boy looking for lunch we left without getting anything and, very sadly, had to resort to a local chain rather than supporting a small independent business 😕
