The Monkey Walk in North West Leicestershire

Went into Coalville for no other reason than to have a bit of a nosh before heading into Leicester for a gig that night. The Monkey Walk is named after an odd custom in the town occurring in a twenty-year span from the 1930s. Single men would ‘promenade’ on one side of the street while unattached ladies would do the same across the road. They would parade up the street looking for ‘meetings’. Hook-ups would happen and couples would often be removed from shop doorways by the local Policeman. Why this odd behaviour was called The Monkey Walk, nobody knows, though an awful lot of banana action would occur, allegedly. However. There is no suggestion whatsoever that men’s backsides would glow red in the practice. This Wetherspoons pub stands where the walk would commence, the site of the old clock tower in the town. A certain amount of promenading still happens in the venue, apparently. The pub is comfortable enough and our server was friendly and smiley. The food arrived in good time and was the standard Wetherspoons fair. The curries were hot enough and cooked through nicely. The poppadoms had just the correct grease to crispiness ratio. An above average ‘Spoons that does enough to sustain your food to liquid intake in pleasant surroundings. And not one red backside was visible at any point.

Breakfast was good but I've one complaint- the mushroom singular. I asked to swap bacon for mushrooms on my small breakfast. 1 individual mushroom came out half raw. I remembered then that the last rime I'd had breakfast here I'd gotten a half raw mushroom too. So this time I asked to swap it for a cooked mushroom since I'd swapped out the bacon especially. The lady came back with another one and said "this one is raw too, do you want me to get you a different one?" I gave up then. Clearly I didn't want a replacement that was the same! Why can't you cook a mushroom in there guys!? What's the deal? Whatever method you're using to cook it, just do it a tad longer!!! I'd have complained about only getting a ration of one small mushroom but one raw mushroom is enough for anyone. Lol

Visited with my 6 year old for breakfast, great service from the bar staff. Breakfast was good and hot. Served as it should be HOT chef and staff should train at other Wetherspoons on how to get beans hot. Spacious and clean will be back when in the em area again.

Went with my 14 year old daughter Saturday brunch Food and staff fine, no problems, just a bit of a waiting time . Toilets clean. Not bad food waiting times for saying they're busy.

Standard of decor not too bad & fairly clean, but the staff are so miserable & unfriendly made to feel very unwelcome if they don't like the public why work in a bar? Have been to many wetherspoons pubs & service has been excellent. The duty manager brought the food out & was very friendly but the bar staff need to find a job they enjoy. I do not intend to use this pub again.

I ordered a vegan pizza (see the image below; captioned as Exhibit A.) and the quality was substandard, the texture of the base was like tough, thin cardboard and the appearance of the 'pizza' overall was of very low standard. I would personally be embarrassed that something like that represents my establishment. In my opinion, it would be difficult even for an experienced attorney to defend the quality of it. The interior and atmosphere of this establishment is dark and oppressive, making you feel tense. To compound matters the management are unprofessional. For example, serious false allegations can be made against you by an individual(s) - known in law terms as hearsay, with no hard evidence to substantiate the hearsay and it is their word (the individual who made the allegation) against yours; management sides with the individual(s) making the allegation resulting in unjust barring. In my opinion, a downmarket establishment with very serious problems, there is something very wrong about this establishment. I would strongly advise against using this establishment. I had to write this review, as this experience was bearing heavy on my soul, because i was the truth regarding the matter and God knows this. It is certainly worth paying more sometimes to eat, drink and socialise elsewhere and it is thanks to God that i am in a position to do so. I walked into a nightmare and If you are lucky enough to be barred from this establishment, it is the equivalent of a liberation.

Visited this morning for breakfast. Staff was welcoming and friendly but unfortunately the coffee wasn’t very warm and when the breakfast arrived it was cold . The sausage also had a tang to it like it was on the turn. Very disappointed, we both came away feeling sick.

Yesterday bought a large wine and cheesy chips and today I’ve checked my bank to find I was charged £7.45. My wine cost me £3.25 so basically that’s discutting to charge £4.20 for chips with a little cheese. Surely the cost must have been wrong and I was overly priced in error. Not happy at all.

Myself and my partner and his daughter, went out for a family dinner at the pub tonight about 7.30 as I was working till late.. we had ordered our food and hadn't finished, when a bouncer/security, came over and was incredibly rude to us..basically telling us we have to leave now. Because my partners daughter is 10.. we have never been aware of this rule saying under 16s aren't allowed in after 8..after that we tried to finish our meals and drinks. When the other bouncer/security person came over and started tapping his watch, telling us to get out.. we go to weatherspoons alot because normally it is a nice family friendly place and my step daughter loves it.. but I am very disappointed in them tonight.

Although cautious about eating out under current conditions we found tables in this pub to be well separated, some with screens. We thought the service when ordering from the App was good, staff friendly and the four steak meals our party had were all excellent. This was the first time eating here and we will most certainly use again.

First pub lunch since lockdown. Felt safe with social distancing procedures, screens and hand sanitiser on hand also other procedures although expected more measures I felt they were adequate Staff friendly and keen to answer any queries Lunch was cooked breakfast which was ordered via app. Speedy service. Only thing that let the visit down was the tables although adequately clean could be a little cleaner . Maybe because I was there at a busy time Rest of the pub was spotless . This is one of my regular go to places and they will keep my custom as I felt safe, food same good quality and good customer service was kept up.

Piwo dobre i nie drogo lecz słabe. Jak to w Anglii. Mają do wyboru też Tyskie w butelce, ale d... nie urywa. Toalety naprawdę czyste i jestem w szoku, to jedyny lokal gdzie mają takie toalety tu w Angolu. Mówię oczywiście o Coalville. Dla nałogowców jest też palarnia jakieś 5 metrów na 5. PS. Patrzcie na kufle czy są czyste... Czy nie jest odbita na nich szminka bądź usta gościa obok was siedzącego ponieważ te ich zmywarki chyba nie do końca myją dokładnie. Na zdjęciu mój kumpel, który jest najlepszym Anglikiem jaki tu w Anglii jest...

I used to go more often to this place until they dropped the Sunday Roast. I think others are of the same opinion. It was half empty Sunday lunchtime.There were no Sunday Brunch menus out and the staff could not find any. In fact the staff did not know what was on the menu! I found a helpful bar person an ordered a rump steak , 10 oz medium well chips and egg. My wife had the Ham, egg s and chips. It arrived quickly and the server was pleasant . The steak was very good indeed and I told her when she came back to check. Pity so few people there. And get some menus.

I've eaten twice hear past month and i don't like to say ive been bad after both meal's. Part from that staff are lovely jhon, Reece allways get served quickly even at peek time's.

not what you really want most is out a box. go find a local pub that cooks from scratch not warming from a box. The sauces are good and the staff do their best. It is what it is

Although upon arriving the tables weren't clear but have taken in mind the level of customers that arrived it was otherwise good service . Tables were eventually cleared and staff seem calm under pressure Myself and daughter enjoyed meal and although they were issues with coffee machine they were dealt with promptly My daughter said she likes monkey walk and will go regularly for our monthly treat

We always go to Wetherspoons steak day wherever we are are and enjoy a good steak for a good price. We’ve always have had a good meal at the monkey walk but on this visit the steak was of really poor quality, dry with quite a lot of gristle and not much taste. We had the sirloin and the rump and both were the same.. come on Wetherspoons we know you can do better than this

Always go in the monkey for one when I'm in the ville It's a tradition to visit with the brother in law.

The place could do with a clean, it’s very dirty and tables are left messy and not wiped very well. The food was cold and very disappointing. The good thing is drinks are cheap, staff friendly but that’s all it has to offer.

Dirty tables when asked to clear only took plates and left dirty glasses and did not wipe the table. Rude staff !!!!!!

Popped into this pub with my wife for breakfast mid-morning on a Thursday. The place was clean and tidy (the toilets were immaculate), with a lovely atmosphere, which you don't always get with this pub chain. We ordered the breakfasts and drinks through the app (if you haven't downloaded this yet you should, as it's a great way to do your order). The drinks were soon brought to the table by a friendly smiling waitress, followed very soon after by our breakfasts. They looked good, tasted great and were lovely and warm. Everything in fact was perfect, so kudos to the staff of this great pub. Thank you for a lovely breakfast.

A fan of Wetherspoons any way. This one did not disappoint. Staff friendly and helpful. Bowl of onion rings and black coffees. Most enjoyable. A really great selection of local pictures. Will go again.

It is quite loud in there as its a pub . There is a lot of drunk people. But it is a nice atmosphere with nice food and good Pepsi max

Excellent value menu. Good to suit all the family. Even a drink included with the price!!! What more could anyone want???

Good range of food, value for money. always good quality . Come here regularly with either my kids or my bf. Never had any complaints about cleanliness or quality of food. Only downfall is distance to stairs to toilets

I love this Pub, everyone is so friendly and lovely, the accomodations are great and the food is delicious .

Me and a friend arrived after work and helped ourselves to a seat. The bar was rather busy as it was a Monday where the beer is cheaper than other days. After waiting about 10 minutes we ordered on the mobile app and our drinks arrived within 10 minutes and our meals came within 20 minutes of ordering. However, me and a friend ordered almost immediately after and my food came before hers and by the time I’d waited another 10 minutes for her food to come mine was Luke warm. Overall a positive experience other than the delay between our two meals

If you're looking for a chilled vibe no matter what time of day you go! The breakfast there is cheap and decent. Staff always friendly and quick - you're average spoons experience and a favourite local!

Each time I come I try something different on the menu even the drinks. Today’s was gammon, egg, chips, beans and onion rings. With a lemonade. Definitely one to recommend but I’d prefer the chips cooked all the way through, some of them were really hard and my steak knife couldn’t even get through them. Other than that. Great. Gammon and eggs and beans all cooked to my taste and I didn’t leave a bite (only the fat)

This pub has never looked great but recently the seat8ng carpets and general decor are getting worse. Most of the seats are uncomfortable and rickety. Tables are never cleared of plates and glasses. Never had a Check back on my food. Which is generally poor in temperature. The staff are a good bunch . It just seems that nobody cares . No standards

We popped in to eat after shopping and the food was lovely nice atmosphere, will visit again., it always seems to be crowded.

I havent visited the Monkey Walk for a while and they are certainly a lot better than they were last time.

I'd always thought that Wetherspoons, whilst not particularly exciting places, were at the very least consistent. You know what you're getting before you arrive.

I had bad feelings about eating here when I saw all the tables piled high with uncleared debris from previous diners. This was borne out by not seeing a single table cleared, properly, in the hour I was there.

Walked in on a Monday night, waited ages at the bar, to then have the bartender serve someone stood behind me. I wasn’t having it. I’m not a regular and don’t feel service at the bar shouldn’t be anything but first come first served. I walked out and went to the engine over the road instead. Not as cheap drinks but better service, nicer place, better atmosphere, recently renovated. I know where I’ll choose to drink the odd occasion I’m in Coalville.

The Monkey Walk is a very average pub located in Coalville town centre, the cheap price is reflected in the interior and the hot chocolate I had wasn't the best. If you fancy a cheap drink this is the place to go, otherwise I wouldn't rush back.

My standard breakfast was OK in content but not in temperature. To be blunt it was cool, very cool on delivery but cold after the toast was buttered. At 10.00 am it was busy but I do not regard this as an excuse. There should be no compelling reason for cold food, other than a salad, I did mention it to the duty manager and he said he was sorry but no offer to sort out the problem. The grammar annoyance is a misplaced, misused, apostrophe in the headline on page 24 of the "Wetherspoons" winter magazine. I have marked this as average which on reflection may be generous.

Have been to many and it’s amazing how different they all are!! This one doesn’t have a lot of competition in terms of cafes or restaurants so could up its game a bit but food is always reliable and pleasant place with parking outside.

You always know what you getting with Wetherspoons. Very average food and drink, but the staff are pretty good and it's clean. It's one of the better pubs in the area.

Great little place, good location with plenty parking outside, great friendly staff and a nice clean interior, as always the beer is great and the food is ok.

Fui a caminar en una particular mono de resaca la comida del domingo con amigos igualmente de resaca. La comida totalmente dio en el clavo y enormes vasos de coca-cola helada en las ofertas de comida arrojaban era un extra! La nueva opción de carne y huevos para un brunch.

Después de un día andando por la ciudad paramos en nuestro camino a casa. Una cálida bienvenida y un buen ambiente del lugar. Bonito y limpio por todas partes y las señoras wc es impecable. Pedí un menú sin gluten y sorprendió la elección y el bajo precio. Pedí todos los lados, ensalada, patatas fritas y ensalada de col, hamuli, las raciones eran buenas, mi marido disfrutó su abbots ale pero su carne un poco duro. Ahora hemos pedido un postre caliente como soy capaz de tener la manzana, estuvó muy inusual para mí tener que como una opción, normalmente helado ofrecido. En general, una buena comida caliente después de un día agotador fue lo que el doctor.

Pescado y patatas fritas pueden variar notablemente de un lugar a otro incluso F & TIENDAS C se equivocan el mono a pie ocasionalmente, pero en Coalville se llega justo cada vez! El bateador era fresco y no demasiado gruesas, el pescado estaba preciosa, servido con guisantes de jardín en tuberías calientes. El servicio era excelente y el costo fue de £2. 99! ! ! ! Mi marido y yo tuvimos F&C; con una pinta de Guinness cada y fue simplemente más de £11. 00! ! Genial.

Yo sólo he ir a la hora del almuerzo. . A veces, a veces con amigos, con mi marido. . La comida siempre es buena. . El personal siempre es amable y servicial. . . He estado en swad wetherspoons ashby y comida siempre bueno en esos dos. . . Sólo decepción con coalville. parece atraer a la vuelta. . . . pero nunca había visto ningún problema allí. . Por la noche, pero quizás nunca durante el día. . . . durante todo un buen pub para tomar una copa y comer x

Great staff, good prices, like the cocktails! Fab that they do then in pitchers..Nice little smoking area outside. Food was lovely.

This place is full of dole hangers.. it's not so where I'd like to take any relative to drink or dine. There's a fight most weekends. Save your time and go to ashby.

It is what it is. A Wetherspoons in the centre of town.Quick and easy grub that doesn't eat into your wallet and a great place to meet up with friends and family. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. Place is also well looked after. Can get mental at late nights and lunch.

The atmosphere is brilliant, the staff are really friendly and never get stuff wrong, people that visit the pub are generally nice and overall it's the winning pub in all of Leicestershire for me.

We come here most Friday’s for tea after our Son’s swimming lesson. Good food at very sensible money.It doesn’t pretend to be anything flash - but the staff are friendly and the food excellent value for money – where else can you get 2 adult meals, 2 alcoholic drinks, 1 kids meal and a kids drink for under £20???

Have had many great meals here mostly breakfasts/brunches but also had lunch food friendly service!!

The prices here are cheap compared to other Wetherspoons locally, however, it would seem as a result portion sizes are smaller here to. It's sometimes impossible to find a table, the staff do not clear the tables quickly enough, the disabled access is poor- it's very difficult to get a wheelchair into the disabled toilet. The whole pub looks very dated and not well looked after. It needs an urgent overall. Go for a cheap meal and cheap beers, stay away if you're after a nice relaxing atmosphere. Go to Ashby Wetherspoons for a better overall experience.

This is a typical wetherspoons, nice atmosphere, good service and good food. We called for lunch and were served quickly and the food was very good, I had the halloumi and sweet chilli wrap which was delicious, my friends burrito looked very good too. There was a rugby match on while we were there so the place was packed but there was a really good atmosphere.

I just love all of the wetherspoon pubs. This particular one is outstanding. The staff and their service is brilliant. Loved my sharer platter and couldnt finish it so the staff gave me a take out box. Definetly coming back to this one.

As in the title it's decent pub grub.. but nothing more.You get what you pay for which is to be expected with the weatherspoons franchise.Good for a quick bite or to soak up the booze.Reasonably friendly atmosphere as are most coalville establishments.Place could do with refurbishing as the decor lacks any personality.. especially when compared to the ashby weatherspoons.

Always busy but service is good. Typical Witherspoon menu but this chain has made eating out a pleasure.

I visited yesterday with a friend for coffee and cake but we frequently eat/drink here. always good food and always good service, plus the amazing Wetherspoon value.I think this is one of the best Wetherspoons - and we have gone to many over the years wherever we've lived and visited. Cleanliness is always good so pat on back for cleaning staff too. Keep it up Monkey Walk

Came here a few times. No music played. Cheap food of a normal quality that you would expect... I recommend the burrito... friendly staff. Small area outside for smokers. It's the sort of pub you go to just to grab a quick bite. Lacks atmosphere.

Not to point out the obvious but cheap beer which is always a winner and the food isn't half bad i would recommend the surf and turf.......a good place to visit before you go "out out....

I went for a roast dinner but I had nothing like I expected I got a plate of plastic and dry food much from my expectations the turkey tasted like nothing I can explain I had no choice with the mash it came as it was sent to the monkey walk all ready with pepper in it which most people don't like

I don't think its very easy to complain about this place. The food is quite good, the pints are cheap and its a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are always friendly and do their best to remember you, at least the afternoon/night staff anyway. Use the place less than I used to but would never baulk at the idea of popping in for a quick one. Only fault I ever find is cold beans on the breakfast, every time.

Usual wetherspoon fare- nationwide menu with cheap food and drinks. Pub was fine and is located in centre of town.

Food is ok staff are friendly the toilets are clean and tidy The comes out very fast And is always hot . The children are happy to sit at the table and colour with the pencils provided

i visited the monkey walk mid week we had two raps and two soft drinks for less than a tenner .The area was clean and tidy and the staff were attentive,but no overkill ..good clean, honest food,for a sensible price ...

Usual Witherspoon menu.Food okay - burgers etc. Cheap and cheerful. We used on the day we arrived and because kids are plain eaters and all was fine , if average!

As a frequent visitor, I find the food to be on a par with most other Spoons. The beers although good and reasonable selection, there are a lot less guest ales on tap due to the size of the bar. Staff are polite and friendly and it never seems to take too long to get served. All in all my favourite watering hole in Coalville.

As with weatherspoons good price food and drink food can be a hit or a miss we had stakes ordered med rear got med well done food can go cold quick as plates are cold staff are always good and some have good knowledge of beers available even so some times limited guest ales compared to ashby branch getting to look a bit rough around the edges

Me and the boys are always down here for Steak nights. Massive steak and a pint for less than it would cost just for the steak at a supermarket, and they cook it for you! What more could you want?!But seriously, for the money it can't be beaten. I'd even say most of the time it beats more expensive choices too!

Food was excellent and good value for money.The staff were friendly except for 1 girl behind the bar that had a face like a wet weekend. No please or thank you and put change on the bar.

I visited for Lunch on 30th April and decided to have one of the curry club specials. The meal itself was amazing and excellent value for money. Like all Wetherspoon pubs it delivers good value food and is very popular as there were many people enjoying this. I felt sorry for two team members who were doing an excellent job serving so many people and dealing with issues that arose along the way. The best thing about the curry is that it came with quite a few free sides such as poppadoms, samosa and a barghee. I can see why this place is so popular especially with the locals.

So the food is okay, it's not anything special but it ticks the boxes when you need to feed the family and don't want to spend a fortune doing it. Would you plan to go here for a special occasion? Probably not - though if your passing and fancy a quick bite to eat then it's worth a visit.

This place just gets worse, which is a shame as it's a local. The food is just slapped on your plate and you can just tell that the warmer upper in the kitchen is bored with his job. Ok if you're desperate though as it's cheap and the drinks are too. Some of the staff leave a lot to be desired.

Food very good. Beer well kept. Not recommended if you're male; toilets out of action. Disabled toilet used as an alternative; in a disgusting state by 8pm.

Steak days offer - excellent value for money. Meal was very good and plenty of it, excellent value for money especially including a drink!!

I had ham, egg & chip sand it was tasty. I was served very quickly and the food also arrived quickly.

My first visit to this pub. I ordered a big breakfast & hot drink. Service was good and the food arrived fresh and in good time.My only bad comment would be like some other reviews have stated. This pub does have the heavy drinkers in from opening time!

Ideal for breakfast in Coalville. Staff were friendly, fresh milk added quickly upon request. Nothing to dislike.

This is a restaurant that you wi go to when you think to yourself you want to go out for a meal but remember you can't spend a lot ,It has good prices and a lot of good deals that go on weekly such as steak Club and curry club and so forth these leave good prices and also offer good food , there are not major problems with the food but the ones there are amount up quickly like just off the top of my head the sauces on the steak are deplorable overall I will continue to go there and will enjoy what I can and the steaks are probably the best thing to have if you get a good chef , sometimes you get a lot of fat and it's not worth it , so I'll give the restaurant and ok out of 10

Un pub bien british pour un petit dej, un lunch ou boire un verre, ils ont un choix très sympa à la carte et ce que j'ai commandé était toujours bon, rien à y redire.Je le conseille, malheureusement il serait bien d'avoir d'autres endroits dans la ville comme ça, c'est un peu désert!note: du choix pour ceux qui comptent les calories ou les végétariens.

Took my car in for service at 8.oo this morning and living some 20miles away decided to hang around till ready. Well Coalville shops don't have a lot to offer and they were not open anyway so decided to pass time by breakfasting at this pub.It was a lovely breakfast and at £4.60 was quite filling and tasty. Pub only had a few people in but the service was good and very friendly staff

We had deliberately picked to go here for breakfast knowing what good value for money they are.Their largest breakfast is huge and costs just £4.60! Coffee is really reasonable as well. The breakfast menu was actually really varied with all the calorie count by each item. The food was of the same standard as any other we had visited and the food hygiene level was 5 (everyone we have been to has been the same). It was clean but the décor is very tired compared to others in the chain with really worn chair covers which were frayed or well rubbed in most cases. The tables were really close together staff and the service were ok. Although I asked for well done eggs on one meal not on both the barman clarified it when I ordered so I know that is what I requested and both came with them really well done, only a minor point but a slight frustration. The service was fast which was good. A previous review made me smile with the reference to the clientele, it is in Coalville not Chelsea! You will get a different set of people depending on your location.

Ok, I'll start by pointing out that I'm not jumping on the "I hate Wetherspoons" bandwagon - the Moon & Bell in Loughborough is actually really nice.The Monkey Walk, however, embodies everything the Wetherspoons critics say. The beer is undrinkable, unless you're drinking lager - and even that seems a bit suspect sometimes. The food is standard for Wetherspoons - nothing special but not a huge price either.The clientele, sadly, also leaves a lot to be desired. Ok if you need a cheap meal and it's quiet - if you want to enjoy a drink in a pleasant atmosphere I'd look elsewhere. Go that extra 10 miles to Loughborough and visit the Moon & Bell instead!

Been here three or four times the food is good for a pub but loads of drinkers around with loud voices. It is a Weatherspoons pub and the meals are very reasonably priced. Service is good food a little slow in coming but that could be because it is cooked as required
