On a 3-4 hour journey to Alton towers and needed somewhere for food before heading home. This pub was an excellent find. Catered for gluten free with its own menu and even willing to customise my son’s fussy needs. Amazing service and food was excellent. Highly recommend! Thank you

Food was nice although had a while to wait. I forgot my phone realised fairly quickly went straight back there were 2 ladies behind the bar I said hi I left my phone the lady with long brown hair handed it to me over her shoulder without even turning round to face me! So rude and ignorant.

Lovely homely pub - brilliant customer service, stunning food. Very reasonable prices. I went solo for the first time in my life , and was greeted with warm smiles and a welcoming atmosphere. The owner came to talk to me personally to see how everything was, highly recommended.

The staff were very friendly. I was impressed with the vegan options. But was very disappointed when I ordered the vegan roast. The food was nice but I've seen larger child's portions. When the waiter asked if everything was okay, I said it was disappointed, he went away and didn't come back. The rest of our group got proper adult portions. Needless to say I wasn't very happy. Shame as it is a nice venue.

Been here a few times now, the pub and restaurant are lovely. Great, extensive menu. Varied choices with 'specials' along with 'pub classics ' and more exotic dishes too! This place has one of the best vegan menus I've ever seen, with plenty of choices. Big shout out to the server Kim, who is so friendly and chatty, really makes you feel welcome. She's and absolute gem and a credit to the place . Ventured in to the garden this time, and what a garden! Very nice, with plenty of seating We will be back!

What an absolute little cracker of a pub, nice, clean quirky and a has a lovely beer garden at the back. The landlady was charming and approachable but more importantly they sell Blue moon on draught. Loved my little pitstop here. Definitely be back.

I visited this pub for the Tina Turner tribute and had 'Simply the Best' time, the restaurant was very busy but the staff were very warm and welcoming. The lady owner was very nice despite the pub being very busy - she changed my food order to accommodate my preferences. I also visited the beer garden which makes the pub well worth a visit and the next morning when I collected my car, I stopped for breakfast which was a very pleasant surprise (all home cooked and plentiful) great place to spend an evening or anytime really. Excellent atmosphere with a big mix of age groups, which is a nice change. Also, dog friendly with very nice touches and beautifully decorated.

We went for my elderly 89 year old Aunties birthday yesterday. The female waitress was lacking in people skills and knowledge of the menus. We ordered 3 starters the 2 soups were piping hot lovely the prawn cocktail was delicious but the main courses were awful. Mum had fish pie with diced fried potatoes and bullet peas. The pie was mashed potato on the bottom 3 pieces of fish and mash on top. My Tandoori chicken wrap and wedges slaw and salad were dire the chicken wraps at McDonalds have far more chicken in for £2.99 and my Aunties salmon you could have used as a shoe sole. No atmosphere bad mains for £64.99 a dear lunch we will not be going again.

This is the second time we have been here and found the lady owner very rude. She delivered our food with no personality at all no smile, she looked like she didn't even want to be there. When she said 'fish and chips' and we were just thinking who from our group had ordered that, she shouted it again in a sharp manor. She asked if we wanted any sauces or anything but it was as though reluctantly. We asked for pepper corn sauce and she said yes but you have to pay for that. Was she judging us as not being able to pay? The kids pizza came with triple cooked chips but they had skin on and were more like wedges. The child didn't like them so we went and asked for fries, the owner turned round and said, well you could of asked for them. We did ask for fries at that point but the request was ignored and instead took servers in the kitchen discussing our feedback with regards to fries and chips. We were trying to offer feedback by making it clear when taking the order, we were not complaining about the food at all. She just came out arguing the point instead of just saying sorry for any misunderstanding and take the feedback, even if when we had gone she paid no mi d to it. Don't argue with paying customers! The food was all lovely. We paid the bill and got up to leave when suddenly she came back and offered the child the free ice cream. We declined. We were all going to order desserts but after the rudeness, unfriendlyness and attitude we decided to leave.

A bright spot in an otherwise dull Monday. Rather than bother cooking we thought we’d risk it, at £14 quid including a pint, it looked to be value for money. So it proved. The pie menu is a bit mad which is a good thing. I’ve done steak n kidney, steak n ale and seeing Balti, Minted Lamb amongst others was refreshing. Minted lamb it was then. Fab. Shortcrust pastry wasn’t too thick at all and the contents ace. Clearly home made. I’m a fan. We’ll be back. Might even bring a vegan with us.

So we've been here a few times and the service and food have always been spot on. However we've been the last 2 weekends on the trot and unfortunatley the standards have seemed to drop a little. Last weekend went we went, I had gotten the wrong time of our booking but the staff were very accomodating and simply moved the time. (If the staff read this they probably know exactly who's writing this :) ). So thank you for that. Now onto the rest of the evening. The drinks orders were taken very quickly and so were the food orders which was great. However, the time that we actually had to wait for the food seemed very long this time compared to others and the resturant wasn't busy. I think it was us and maybe another 4 tables if that at our time of ordering. The food itself was very good as usual which is the reason we didn't complain about the waiting time. The desserts that came next which still seemed to take a while for 2 ice creams and a brownie, were lovely. Though I will say that 2 cookies did make my dish just a little to sickly so maybe just one cookie on top would be fine. The service itself wasn't as great as usual. Both of our servers that came to take our orders were chewing gum! They were not discreet about it and were very clearly chowing down on it while we were ordering which wasn't very nice to be honest but again the overall was lovely so we didn't complain. This weekend we went again (yes I got the right time this week :) ), Again the drinks order was taken quite quickly and they were delivered fairly quickly to. Execpt this weekend we ended up waiting longer for someone to take our food order which was odd. Our servers didn't even ask if we were ready to order just popped the drinks on the table and walked off. Eventually someone did come back to take the order and this time there was no gum which was great. Again though the wait for the food seemed very excessive with no communication while we were waiting. I think it was probably a good 35-40 minute wait for the food this time. I notice there were 2 tables of 8 went I went to the bathroom and when we left I could hear music in the tent thing outside. If this was causing a longer wait it would have been nice just for someone to pop over and say 'I'm sorry about the wait we've got........'. Anyway back to the food. The food was nice for the most part as usual. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his, the only little issue we had was my mothers fish pie. In all fairness to my mum this sauce was extremely running and didn't look very nice at all. Anyway so told the server that and as a good person would the lady did ask if there was something she could do about it. So that response was lovely. Now when a lad came to clear the dishes he was lovely (I don't know if he was new), but he informed us that ice cream came with the child meal and asked what flavour. We told him thinking he was going to take the whole pudding order and he didnt. He made a note then walked off.It wasn't until they brought that out that they took our order for our puddings. I do want to make a note that the servers did continue to walk in and out of the room but still didn't communicate with us at all. As an overall experience over the last few times I don't feel like the service and food have been as good as before but we would still go back. None of this critism it's purely just feedback which will hopefully help you with keeping your services to a high standard.

Came here Sunday evening, had a long day and we was all so hungry. Service was good even though there was only two people serving. When our meals arrived i was gobsmacked by the portions! The two lads ordered burger, this came with a very small basket of chips and a small pot of salad. No word of a lie there must have been 10 chips, i asked the lady and she said they come in a basket. They are homemade chips. Well the portion was tiny. I thought for homemade chips they were very bland. I ordered a pie, this was also served with chips, mine didn't come in a basket but again the portion was tiny. I thought the meal was ok but very overpriced for what we had. Wouldn't go back.

This is about as good as pub food gets. Really interesting menu that shows considerable thought with a real buzz about the place. Portions are of a good size with excellent presentation. The various dinning rooms are beautifully set out with lots of natural light and well chosen fabrics and furniture. All in all cracking value for money - a refreshingly well run place.

Disappointing! Booked for the Greek Night and definitely did not live up to expectations. Was supposed to be a themed night with 3 course Greek menu and live entertainment. Were there for over an hour before we were informed there was no entertainment due to illness, so basically was an over priced meal with very little connection to Greece (no reduction in price due to no live music). No atmosphere, dry food, small portions. Young staff clearing table while we were still eating. Will not be going again, complete rip off!

I went to the Birch Tree with my mother today (our first outing to eat since the restrictions have been lifted). We were able to book at the last minute and every requirement was accommodated for.Upon arriving there are a couple of posters to allow you to scan in on the NHS Covid App & sanitise our hands etc. We were then greeted by a lovely lady behind the bar, Who asked if we had booked and directed us to the restaurant entrance where we were handed over to a member of staff who looked after us during our dining. We were asked for our drinks order and had a look at the menu to see what ‘tickled our fancy’! We both wanted something classic so we opted for the Steak and Ale Pie which was lovely! Our drinks were delivered to the table quickly and our order was delivered to our table within 20 mins. We were asked for any other requirement (Condiments etc.), We we’re then followed up if we required any other drinks and asked if our meal was okay. After our meal we were asked if we wanted the desserts menu, We had a look however we didn't have the room to eat anything else, So we opted for the bill which was delivered to our table and payment was taken at the table. All in all a great experience, Excellent staff and felt safe whilst we were there, We will definitely visit again!

So…Food is lovely & good value for money. Beer garden is really nice also & great place to sit and have a drink in the sun. Sadly, none of that matters because the landlady of this pub is not nice…I’ve been on two separate occasions. First time; the landlady wasn’t there and the staff were lovely & really easy going, we enjoyed our visit hence coming back . Second time when the landlady was there, staff were on edge & service was nothing like the first time. It’s really clear the staff are afraid of her. The landlady of this pub is unpleasant & rude. Her attitude absolutely stinks. When she came over to take our drinks order, I wondered who she actually thought she was talking to, so rude! If she continues like this, I can’t say she’ll have a business going forward. The people on the table next to us also commented how rude she was so it doesn’t go unnoticed. Hopefully this changes as everything else about this pub is good but she has got to go. If you fancy a nice meal with a side of bad attitude come here.

Which I booked in plenty of time and I asked to be put undercover and was told this was not a problem and I have messages on my phone saying so . So we got took to a table right in the open ! I said we didn’t want to sit there and was told someone else was on our table , the staff sorted this out for us the owner sat on a chair in the shed that they have put up . Never even came out to apologise. We got seated ordered our food on the app which is long winded some how we ended up with 3 meals and had to wait for the other 3 , 20 minutes later nog good enough. Then we ordered 3 coffees eventually came and was cold . When we went to tell a member of staff and to take back 20 mins later still no coffee then we was told the others wasn’t even cold ....... customer is always right I could go on but I truly can’t be bothered

There was nobody at the entrance to greet us so we had to walk through the garden which we were then shouted at to wear a face mask in front of everyone which was unprofessional. We then ordered drinks which took around 25 minutes to come which we could understand if it was busy but there was only 10 tables max and plenty of staff to cover these tables (at least 2 each which isn't a lot). We then got asked some time later what food we would like but were not given a menu to look at so when the waitress finally told us the options we ordered but this food then took another 20/25 minutes to come. The only saving grace here was that the food was amazing and to give credit where it's due, I'd go again purely for the food. We then wanted more drinks which as you've probably figured out by now, took a while. We also ordered some desserts (an easy quick 2 mins in the microwave with some custard) but these took forever and we had to ask when we'd be likely to get them in which they then magically appeared a few minutes later. But what made this worse was that we were asked to pay for our mains and drinks before our desserts come even though we hadn't finished yet and probably would have ordered more drinks but we thought this was incredibly rude so we didn't bother. The service from the staff was so unprofessional and frankly, it was as if they couldn't be bothered and really ruined the experience as they have a beautiful beer garden and food. Won't be in a rush to go back at all.

The owners have clearly put a lot of love and effort into the the pub because its one of the best looking gardens around, look forward to seeing the inside in May. The effort has paid off too as the place was very busy but still covid safe. Food and drink were both nice, maybe could work on adding some different cocktails, thats just personal preference though. Only thing was the service was a bit slow at times, I assume this is down being the first Friday back and staff getting use to it all. Pleased the Birch Tree is now a place to go and not just an OAP hangout.

From the start we weren’t welcomed upon arrival and had to find some one to be seated, looked in the bar to see at least 12 people not social distancing all crowded around a corner table, Merlot was £15 but tasted like one you can pick up in a petrol station, service was poor and no eye contact made and felt very rushed, no up selling of any kind, and now on to the worst part, the food, not up to anybody’s standard, cold bought in frozen chips that looked and tasted like they were left under the hot lights for at least half an hour on both meals and the mushroom on the steak was basically raw, steak was asked for medium rare yet came out more medium well, got a new plate sent out but the steak was once again over cooked and one of the onion rings looked like they had tried to cremate it, bought in burger patty and pulled pork was also bought in, surprising as they have a new smoker oven all over there Facebook page. Manager was very rude no apology at all until we asked for one! Also saw her take her mask down to talk to a table, so just the two breaches of Covid so far, also we left at 9.59 and people were still in the bar finishing drinks with the lights turned off, strike 3! Would never eat here again and will make sure my friends and family avoid this place, me and my partner both work in the food industry for a combined total of 29 years so far and where appalled at the service and food.

Visited last week as its local for us and have been many times before.Food was lovely, portions are quite small but not a major issue. Menu advises home cooked chips, but they arent - they used to be afew months ago but they have been changed now and not as nice as previous.Staff normally very good, although i think we were unlucky on our last visit as the waitress had a face like a slapped backside and was not very polite.Outside area is beautiful.A couple of covid points...Sanitiser on entry which was goodThey do advise no standing at bar during COVID, however we had to weave our way through 5-6 men all standing ordering drinks. They say tables are spread more apart....the tables have not been moved since before pre covid and are way too close together. One use menus.....hmmm not quite....our (happy!) waitress asked if we had finished with the menu, to which we advised we had and expected her to place them in the bin, but she took them and passed them to a table across the way from us!!!!!Its a shame they cant follow simple COVID rules

The food is amazing just what you want from a pub homemade food and greatly priced too. The garlic mushrooms are a must have for a starter i have them every time i go. I took some friends for the 1st time on Saturday and they are already planning their second trip there I can't recommend this place enough

Dined here earlier this week after previously having best Sunday lunch ever & meals were amazing !! Highly recommend Rib Eye & Salmon dishes Got to be one of the best pub dining places for miles. Big portions so make sure you’re hungry, home cooked food well presented & very tasty served in lovely surroundings !! Friendly staff despite being extra busy with Eat out & Covid measures, extra cleaning measures between diners but not affecting the overall chilled ambience Thanks to Sara, Jamie & there team for going that extra mile It is greatly appreciated during such stressful times

Myself, my partner Chris and two friends visited The Birch Tree yesterday as we had heard that it has recently undergone a substantial refurb since our last visit. Well we were not disappointed. The pub and restaurant looked amazing. On top of that, they have one of the best beer gardens I have ever been in, worth a visit, just for that.We had two steak and ale pies, which I can personally recommend, and don't think anyone would be disappointed with them. The other two diners had Hunters Chicken and a steak salad, to which they both said was f a high standard. Given these very strange times, service was very slightly longer than previous, however not really noticeable, but we put this down to the new table service etc for drinks, and to be honest really is no longer than anywhere else in these Covid times which we are all having to adapt to. The pub itself is extremely Covid friendly, and immediately made you feel safe with instructions etc to the pubs policies. there are plenty of sanitisers etc all around and a really nice touch is that they have a bottle of sanitiser on each table, Full marks to the Birch tree for that one!! Overall a great dining and drinking experience and at VERY reasonable prices, and that is just their normal prices. Overall the food and, ambience, service and feeling safe/Covid wise was fantastic, and we will certainly be returning. Well done to the management and staff, your hard work and commitment shines through. Bill.

I visited this pub on Monday lunch time to meet family members. It has been really well refurbished and the pergola outdoors has created a really nice dining area. We were welcomed (not in the most friendly way) and seated. The two young girls working the floor were polite and friendly but they needed some support as it took a long time to get a drink once ordered, or to get them over in the first place. We had one halloumi salad (perfectly fine) but the two steak salads but lots of fat on the steak which was hard to remove in a bowl. It could have been previously removed as it defeats the point of having a salad. Would not have been happy to had paid £12 for it, as it was simply leaves and the main topping. Another guest had a main meal which seems to be the best value for money as they were happy and we saw others with other dishes which looked appealing. The main issue was slow service. Asked for a drink before the meal and after eating the meal I had to ask where they had got to. I am unsure whether I would return.

Overall we were disappointed. Our greeting was luke warm, we felt we had to apologise for being a couple of minutes late due to being delayed at the train crossing. Led to a very busy and noisy table, but we were moved when we asked (I am hard of hearing so wouldn't be able to hear a conversation. Our main concern was the arrangements during the pandemic. No apparent reduction in number of tables, waitresses not wearing masks, or any effort to maintain a one metre distance, glasses and plates handled by waitresses and presumably the kitchen staff. We watched the tables being cleaned by a waitress and the manager - only cursory wipe of the tables with corners missed on both occasions. This wasn't really good enough. Had we been in a high risk area, it would have been a very uncomfortable evening. Main courses were good. My syrup sponge presumably saw some syrup pre-lockdown...awful for £5.50...so dry with zero syrup moisture. Sorry, won't be returning. £20 reduction thanks to Boris, but that is the only saving grace.

Just got back from a meal here, decided to treat my 4 children under the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. It was easy to book, spotlessly clean and we loved the decor, my little girl thought the loo was like Narnia with all the beautiful decorations The staff were well organised, polite and attentive,a credit to the restaurant. Our drinks order was taken promptly and delivered to our table. There was a good choice of food on the menu and we didn't have to wait long for our meals after we ordered. When our meals arrived, we couldn't believe the generous portion sizes! The food was nicely presented and hot. All 6 of us really enjoyed our meals. We will certainly return to The Birch Tree, regardless of the discounted meal scheme. Although that was a bonus because it was a mere £41 for 6 lovely meals and a drink each. Many thanks to the team

We came for a family meal last night for my dads Birthday. We were all very pleased with our meals and in my dads words “The steak and ale pie is beaut”. My brother is vegetarian and was happy that there was sufficient choice for him to choose from. The 2 ladies who served us were very attentive and we didn’t have to wait long at all for either our drinks or meal. Sara was very friendly and welcoming, she gave us a tour of the garden and lit it up after it had closed - We can’t wait for some lovely weather to return to we can sit in the lovely beer garden and enjoy some drinks. Overall, we enjoyed our evening so much that we’ve booked in for Sunday dinner this week!

Looked online and the menu looked o k so thought would give it a try. Pate starter o k. But the main course ....... It is quite handy that the place is next to the quarry. If they run out of paving stone they could use the lasagne. The garlic bread could substitute for kerb stones. The cottage pie was passable but not enough meat. Drinks service was slow had to ask again just for a coke.Told the waitress about the lasagne when she cleared away (nearly all of it left !).No reduction in the bill. She did apologise but evening ruined. Of course will never visit again.

Visited twice this week and not disappointed the meals were good especially the home made chips and ham. Fish and chips perfectly cooked and tasty with proper mushy peas. The regular young waitress was very good but very rushed maybe a increase in staff ? It would be a shame to lose customers because of wait times.. otherwise everything was spot on and social distancing was easy. Recommended and will return.

Well, what a little gem we discovered today! from the moment we entered the premises the chilled & welcoming atmosphere made us instantly feel at ease.We sat together in the comfy quirky drinking area for a while taking in the funky surroundings and vibe we were feeling. The bar staff were lovely & helpful & when we asked where we could eat directed us through to either the indoor or outdoor (sheltered) eating area....So off we went to find a table.....& was even more amazed to find the beautiful garden area with so much space & character. Because the beautiful British weather is as reliable as always we decided to eat inside....& sat on the lovely benches dressed with cushions & throws (could of easily fallen asleep there!) again....the decor & surroundings again so quirky it had to be a talking point. On to the food.....faultless....great options for both vegan & Carnivore....& service with a smile ....We had the pleasure of meeting Sara, a lovely woman who’s passion for beautiful place they’ve created shines through, we look forward to returning to this lovely placeLee & Rachael

The garden area is also fantastic you would think you were in the middle of nowhere not just off the M1. The food was delicious, with both traditional and inventive which meant we had a lot of choice. When the food came we loved the presentation and the portion size great. Visited here on Saturday 7th March on the recommendation of some friends, what a warm, friendly, welcoming pub it is and the decor is beautiful, Food and service were both excellent , I had the steak & ale pie which was very tasty & the home cooked triple cut chips they serve here are to die for. I didn’t manage to have a dessert as I was too full after my main course but some of my friends did and they looked amazing particularly the cheesecake . My only complaint is that I don’t live closer, I will definitely be visiting again when I come back to Leicester.

Wow We attended with other parents and children and had sat outside. We were moved by the owner from a clean area as they “were working in the garden”!! No signage and area was not cordoned off! Then moved to an area full of dog poo, tables dirty and broken glass on grass, resulting in one our children cutting themselves!!The female manager didn’t give damn about our needs or expectations. She may as well have told us to sling our hook. The last owners were so hospitable and welcoming!!All of us are professionals and have never seen such a badly run establishment We will not be returning and will be telling others to avoid as well So please do not go!!!!!

We booked a table for 2 for 7.30pm on Saturday. We arrived at 7.25pm and were shown to our table fairly promptly which was good. The waitress took our order 20 minutes after. At 8.30pm we still had no food. I asked the waitress how much longer it was going to be and she informed us it would be another 20-30 minutes. This would mean we would have to wait over an hour for some basic food.in view of this we left. Generally the food here is ok but there was a party in the other room and it seemed apparent they were vastly understaffed for the event. I trust in view of our disappointing evening the management of the Birch Tree should read my comments and act upon them.

There were ten ladies out for a belated Christmas meal. The food was better than ever. The Portugese skewers were amazing and very well presented. Special praise for the staff who looked after us all so very well. The group hopes to go back for its summer celebration supper.

We have been here once before and had a lovely meal so we’re looking forward to the afternoon with great friends and food. The service was excellent but food poor all around. The melon was so thin you could see through it, mackerel pate tasteless, soup seemed okay. Vegetables were frozen and tasteless but mash and roast were fine. Cheap sausage and stuffing with okay turkey, beef was tasty but mostly bones and fat. Salmon was good as with Christmas pudding but very small portion. Cheesecake was worst desert ever being very sweet, tasteless and nothing like it should have been. To finish up we had just half a cup of coffee with a nice mince pie. What a shame for the money and distance some of our party traveled.
