Went there yesterday with my mum and sister for a drink and chat at 5.30pm. Music was insanely loud and when I politely asked the manager to turn it down slightly, he replied by saying that he wouldn't turn it down because there was a festival in Camden. The place was virtually empty and is it any wonder?! I had heard it had gone down hill recently and is it any wonder with management like that.

Un amigo mío y yo fuimos al monarca todas las semanas. No vayas más después de esta experiencia. Una noche los gorilas no nos dejaron entrar, preguntamos por qué. No estábamos causando problemas ni nada, ellos no estaban ocupados ya que al mismo tiempo dejaban entrar a otros machos, ahora, la única diferencia entre ellos, mi amigo y yo es que somos negros.

Entramos por casualidad pues decidimos tomar unas cervezas mientras esperamos el bus, que está la parada al lado. Un local con encanto, y para nosotros un descubrimiento, pues al final se alargó la tarde entre cervezas y musica en directo. Al final nos marchamos por que nos acompañaban dos jóvenes sin su dni y no los dejaron entrar, no permiten la entrada a menores de 18, una pena, pues nos hubiera gustado continuar un rato más.

I’ve lost count the amount Of times I’ve been to The Monarch and has a good night. Never had an issues with the staff. The music is always good. Entry doesn’t cost a fortune. Which makes a change from other places in London.Cloak room is free. Can’t rate this place highly enough please don’t change.

Very unpleasant experience. My partner was performing at this venue, and if it wouldn't be for him, we would have simply left...The female barmaid was exceptionally rude when I have asked for a slice of lemon with my wheat beer! My friend, who was standing next to me, couldn't believe that a professional who has decided to work in customer service appeared to act in such a rude and dismissive manner! Next, food which all of us ordered arrived barely warm. Vegetarian burgers were bland, and the Monarch burger, according to our friend, was "disgusting". Lastly, gentlemen who stood at the door refused to let our friend back in, after he finished his cigarette. No reason for refusal was given. If it wouldn't be for us, his jacket with his personal belongings would have been left inside, as the staff was very firm. Very unfortunate cause of events. Unjustified prejudice towards customers, and extremely disappointing experience!

the Bouncer took my money and pretended like I didn’t pay, when his boss came out and I complained he claimed that I was homeless... then said I tried to hit him with my skateboard! SKATEBOARDERS ARE NOT WELCOME AT THIS VENUE! *BEWARE*

Visited with a friend during trip to London for a few days. Found in a search for live music.Like the Camden area so attracted by free admission and several bands on a Tuesday night.Not disappointed as 4 bands were all very entertaining and pretty good.Venue was fine for spectating. Good service. Decent prices. What more could you ask. Happy to recommend and return

This pub is really just so much fun every single night. When there's not rocking live music, there's a great DJ. It's just the best time, affordable drinks, great environment.

Rude woman on the front door. We were told we had free entry but she wouldnt listen and made us pay, while our other friends got in for free. When confronted she said there was just no way she could give a refund. How rude.

I visited the venue yesterday and one of the customers sexually harassed me.I approached the security to get involved, however, after I told him everything his response was: "so what?"

Incredible independent music venue. I have enjoyed many a nights in this place, where there are bands playing pretty much every night of the week.

our night was absolutely ruined. My friend had a party of at least 30 people and reserved the area just for us for her Birthday celebration. Everything was going fine, until it came to closing. Once the DJ officially announced that it was the end of the night, the bouncers were incredibly fast to react, telling us to hurry up rushing us then whilst waiting for our friend telling us to go down the stairs and wait their, to then be told to get outside and asking us why we are waiting inside.. I understand people want to get home but the way they went about this was absolutely damn right rude and shocking never have I experienced such dissapoitment and rude manners and absolutely terrifyingly aggressive behaviour toward us rushing us out when we clearly were gathering our belongings. We then faced another problem when my friend wanted to exit with his drink in a plastic cup, this by law is acceptable and having 3 bouncers down his throats and pushing at us and being aggressive towards us for asking for the drink to be handed back to us politely, is NOT right! Correct me if I'm wrong but this is illegal as he paid for that drink, the principle of this matter is indicative of a bad quality of service.

Great venue for free live music events, extremely cheap drink offers, lovely and helpful barstaff! And the weird smell is gone too

Salió para el concierto de Soap Girls. Disfruté mi noche. El concierto fue realmente bueno, estaba de buen humor. Tengo un tirador de camarero en mí. La próxima vez que estábamos pidiendo ella estaba por todo el lugar. Hice un comentario: sobrio. Que debería haber hecho o terminado su turno. ¡Indignante! Llegué al punto en que pedí un gerente. Cuando el gerente vino, no vino a mí, se dirigió a su miembro del personal borracho. Estaba borracha y realmente dramática, el gerente se acercó a mí y me dijo que estaba siendo grosero con su personal por decir que estaba borracha sin siquiera preguntarme por qué necesitaba hablar con un gerente. Me sorprendió cómo se manejó la situación. Supongo que todos beben detrás de la barra hasta el punto de que no pueden manejar a los clientes que pagan por el boleto y por la noche. Absolutamente indignante! Mi noche fue arruinada por miembros del personal borrachos.

Estoy profundamente decepcionado en este lugar! ¡No lo visites si eres extranjero, ya que no te harán sentir bienvenido!

I watch the semifinal between England and Croatia with my friends and I was having a great time until a mentally unstable person decided to pour beer to me and my girlfriend. Thanks to frankie and Mindagas we had the issue sorted very quickly and well handled. I will come back only thanks to the wonderful staff in your property, many thanks.

Pub bastante estándar. Vine aquí a ver algunas bandas en el Festival Camden Rocks. El sonido era bueno, pero que dejó su juego corto debido a los ingenieros de sonido que no pudo obtener. Pero por lo demás, es un buen lugar. Nada especial.

Local bacana para ouvir musicas anos 80- 90 fomos no sábado, onde tinha o tema de musicas de filmes, foi SHOW.

Great old place- don’t let it be changed by the hoo har Henry’s- they’ve ruined so much of Camden already- so what it’s floorboards- so what it’s got a pool table - so what there’s a faint smell of puke- the music was 60’s B sides I swear but you can dance to anything.. great atmosphere- coat check, brill staff.. this could be my new fave place in Camden

Previously had really good food here but today was disappointing. The fried chicken was black and the chips cold with gravy like water and tasteless. The bacon in the burger was totally burnt and the bread dry with sombre cold chips. Wasn't very busy but still waited 40 minutes for awful food to arrive. Will not be visiting again.

This is a very good menu to listen to live music and good priced drinks, but the food is fairly poor. Good looking menu but certainly the food is not as attractive as the menu. Good fun, poor food

I had to wait 30 minutes for a simple burger with chips and when I enquired at the counter, I was told that the machine in the kitchen was broken. All they offered me was a refund; I said I was hungry and that I would wait as long a the wait was not too long. After 20 minutes, my food wasn't ready yet so I had to go to the counter again to have an update. At this point I finally got my burger and it was burnt. Not impressed at all! Bar staff too slow and not particularly friendly. Only good point about this place: the music

Decide to pop in for a beer on the way to a gig at the roundhouse and ordered a beer, barmaid ( young blonde) said she needed to change the barrel, fair enough. 5 minutes pass at least and then she comes out walks past us ( no explanation or apology ) and goes to talk to another group of customers! We walked out. Save your money and go elsewhere , plenty of better bars down the road . Sort your customer service out !

El Monarch es un hotel sencillo, divertido y peculiar lugar. Vimos dos buenas actuaciones allí en un viernes, ambos de alto nivel. Las bebidas estaban bien de precio y me encanta la decoración con cuadros buscando abajo en el hall medieval!

Vine aquí con mi familia para una comida y la comida fue fenomenal. Absolutamente genial y sin duda volveré de calidad!

Había oído cosas buenas sobre este lugar; no me decepcionó! Personal amable, buena cerveza de barril, mucho espacio y un diseño agradable para el lugar. Estábamos en bastante temprano un sábado por la tarde, me hubiera gustado haberme quedado hasta tarde! Sin duda, volveremos la próxima vez que esté visitando Camden.

Myself and a group of friends recently attended the Frank Turner Lost Evenings event held around Camden area. Having heard quite a bit about the Monarch, I and my group of friends decided to make a number of visit.On our first visit, myself and two friends arrived at the venue in the mid-afternoon for a pre-gig drink. This visit was the saving grace of this review - if this visit had not taken place it would be a 1 star review (with an additional 'wish there was a 0 star option' comment). The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was good, the food was decent, and the drinks were relatively inexpensive for the area we were in. On our second visit later on in the evening, myself and the same two friends, plus two additional friends who are wheelchair-bound, were refused entrance to the venue. This was explained by the security as being due to the 'drunkenness' of my two friends. Working in a bar myself, I see no point in arguing with security on this type of accusation, because they will never change their mind, so was content to believe my friends were fine and move on. However, when one of my wheelchair-bound friends attempted to simply ask the security guard if there was anywhere in the area that was accessible, the security instantly got defensive, believing this was some sort of accusation of why we were being refused entry. Although throwing accusations of discrimination should not be done lightly, this response is extremely telling. Innocent people do not get their backs up over nothing. Before we moved on from the venue, the member of staff collecting entry even stated that my friends were not drunk and that the security had cost the venue money (five people drinking in a venue for 4 hours would have been hundreds of pounds), making this whole interaction entirely avoidable. Standing up to security is almost unheard of for most venues, so the member of staff deserves a pat on the back for that. But otherwise this was an utter shambles of a visit. On our third visit the next day, myself and the same group of friends arrived at the venue in the evening. We requested the access door be opened to allow the two wheelchair-bound friends to enter the venue, but were told by the security that the access point was blocked by band equipment. Instead of finding a solution to this problem, the security and member of staff manning the entry fee payment allowed another customer who was with the band playing to lecture one of my wheelchair-bound friends on how moving the equipment would be inconvenient, basically coming up with excuses not to allow them to enter the venue in a dignified manner. However, they were also accepting the fact that blocking an access door/fire door is a breach of health and safety, and is therefore illegal. Instead of a simple solution, we instead had to carry the two wheelchair-bound friends up and down sets of stairs to enter the venue. When attempting to leave the venue, the same access way was blocked with tables that we had to move, which a member of staff pompously stated we should have asked to move before hand. They should not have been there in the first place. The treatment by the security in this venue was in sharp contrast to the treatment by the security at Camden Tavern just down the road, who were polite and welcoming, explained the access situation clearly, and allowed us entry. We had a much more pleasant time here on all accounts. The Monarch should reconsider its security selection, and make sure its staff are more proactive in promoting access for all people, and definitely not be allowing members of the public to decide on what takes place in the venue.

Hatte den Pub wegen dem Auftritt von Charlotte Campbell am 21 März besucht. Das Personal war recht freundlich und wusste meine Wünsche einzuschätzen und die Bedienung servierte mir ein passendes Getränk. Gegessen wurden nur die Chips die sehr gut waren. Toiletten wurden nicht besucht.Die Einrichtung ist gemütlich und hat ein gewissen Charme.

Went here on Tuesday evening in March. Great friendly atmosphere, live music which was of a really high standard and efficient food and drink service. Really good value for money too!

The pub has really disappointed on my last visit. The decor and charm are still there, the toilets were actually cleaner than last time, but the food! It seemed like the average pub fair it should be, but my fish tasted very chemical, I'm not quite sure how to describe the taste, kind of as if it had been soaked in a cleaner chemical. I took two bites and left the rest on my plate.The peas and chips seemed fine but I had a very upset stomach the next morning, so something just wasn't quite right.I'll probably come back for the quizzes but I'll steer clear of the food in the future.

We've been running around Camden all day. Tired feet. Hungry bellies....thirsty! This place is awesome. Great sofa corner in front of sunny window. Great for people watching! Snakebites all round, we're having a wonderful time!

Popped in for a drink after being in Camden Market, great pub, rugby was on and although we didn't have any food it looked amazing coming out and arriving on tables. Really friendly pub that hosts live music and a movie soundtrack club night every Saturday! Wish we lived closer but will definitely be going back

This pub is owned by folk musician Beans On Toast, and they host regular small acts throughout England of various genres. I have visited for Gaz Brookfield, Nick Parker and Ben Marwood, all famous in the nu-folk scene, and has also played host to independent venue week and Xtra Mile Records' summer & christmas parties. Food is good from what I have had and drinks are reasonable for London, my only disappointment is that they removed the bread basket for garlic bread which would be great but the garlic bread isn't very strong at all. Musique et bieres dans un quartier plus que vivant de londres..un peu excentré des marchés pour un peu de tranquilité

Non so se sia sfigata io o meno, ma ho fatto fatica a trovare un pub che sapesse di "legno e chitarre" a Londra. E questo devo dire che mi ha soddisfatta. L'atmosfera è piacevole, con i suoi colori scuri e le luci soffuse. C'è quasi sempre un gruppetto che suona. La birra (cifre non assurde, a differenza di altri. La ipa che ho preso io costava 5.5£) non è male e la spillano quasi in grazia di dio (altra cosa che, al contrario di quel che pensavo, non è così diffuso a Londra -.-)Inoltre la posizione poco distante da camden town è solo una chicca in più.

Se proprio avete fame e non potete attendere oltre...Nella patria del pub...Si può trovare di molto meglio sia a livello di cibo, che di location che di servizio.

Having spent a few hours in Camden Lock & Markets, we looked for a pub for a quick drink away from the manic crowds. We came across The Monarch near Chalk Farm tube station and seeing that it was uncrowded decided it would give us the opportunity for a little relaxation.The bar staff were friendly and welcoming and served our drinks as you would expect. Having found seats, you could then see that the pub was in serious need of a massive refurbishment. Battered tables, worn out, torn sofas and a general drabness about the place, were pretty much all the place had to offer on a Sunday afternoon. The quality of our drinks, draught Guinness & Kronenberg, was questionable and just about palatable.It seems from the endless posters throughout the place that this is a venue for live music on weekend evenings. Whatever 'floats the boat' of locals is ok, but not a place that we would choose to revisit.

I have been to The Monarch before and generally always been treated well. The staff behind the bar are efficient and polite, so that was not an issue.However I am completely disgusted by the way my friends were treated the other day by the bouncers at the door. We were in The Monarch for a birthday and one of our friends who is disabled and not feeling well ordered an Uber, so two of my other friends escorted her out of the venue and walked her to the Uber car, as she cannot walk very well and they wanted to make sure she was ok. When they tried to get back into The Monarch, the bouncers were having none of it, unless they paid an entry fee.They became quite hostile to my friends when they explained they were simply escorting our disabled friend to her cab. I am disgusted and will never come back here again due to this.

I went here last Sunday with my friend, very nice location nice pub, nice music, we had a few drinks and Sunday roast good for drinks but nor fir the roast meat overcook but for that price I couldn't expect a lot , very cheap! nice barman!

It's a good place to eat and chill in Camden. Classic pub with classic but delicious burgers. Good value for money.

We popped in there before going to the Round house. We decided to have a couple of ciders (not fantastic but also not Strongbow) we also ordered some chips onions rings and BBQ sauce.The chips were OK and I do juts mean ok. A little over cooked while simultaneously a little soggy and greasy. The onion rings were vile. Thick and over battered then under crispy. If you like the idea of an onion doughnut you'll be fine. The BBQ sauce had no depth of flavour at all and if I were to guess was just ketchup with smoked liquid flavouring added. If you get chips and onions rings wrong you need to go back to the drawing board I'm afraid.

It looked old style yet special from the outside. When I popped in, the place was thoroughly empty, even so it took 10 minutes to the staff to notice that my family and I, four people, came in and needed information. Service was super slow (again, the whole place was empty, and I visited lunch time on a late August Monday), food was good but average. What surprised us (in a bad way) was the awful hygiene of the outside area, which looked so abandoned that we opted for an indoor seat, even if it was a hot August morning in London. Nothing special.

The food came cold. When I asked for a refund I was asked do I want it reheated?! Reheated cheese burger and chips.Got the refund after the manager chap had said hi to his mates. It was a shame as the food looked good.......just cold.

I was here for the Italy/Spain football match. The pub was empty because it was at 5 in the afternoon but they had a very big screen!!! They have very good chips, fantastic hamburger and a lot of choice of beers and ciders!

I love this place, brilliant atmosphere, food was lovely as well. Wonderful service from Leah, she was really helpful and looked after us. Will definitely come back, if you like good music, and good atmosphere, go to the Monarch. Very relaxed and comfortable, cater for everyone's music tastes with different nights.

This is a traditional pub in the neighborhood with fabulous decor and the London style.You can drink and eat well at any time. The waitters are very polite and quick.

We had a good Saturday night out in this pub in Camden. Good selection of reasonably priced beers. Friendly staff, good atmosphere. There was a movie soundtrack night when we visited, good fun, good music. Comfortable sitting areas up- and downstairs.

Every Time I've been here I've never had a problem. On my brothers birthday they couldn't save us a booth so gave him a free bottle of wine (didn't have to do that). The drinks here are MUCH cheaper than Proud over the road. I was here on Saturday and got 3 vodka and lemonade and one beer for £16. Whereas at proud vodka and red bull £15 rip of!! I've been on both Saturday and Friday night and will be going back next Saturday for my brothers birthday again and I hope I a great time again. Also since Ice wharf doesn't have a DJ anymore this is a great alternative.

Are here this evening (20 march) and to be honest it was very enjoyable. It was a little confusing wondering whether we needed to wait to be seated or just find your own seat but we got past that quite quickly. Sat in a booth which was very comfortable and we had a burger with chips, pulled pork burger with chips and Mac and cheese balls all of which was very nice indeed. I would happily go back. My ONLY real critique is that the burger was just a little to "pink" very much borderline raw in the middle. However this didn't really bother me and I ate the lot!!The bar was very busy but the food did arrive in good time.Good job guys I will be back!

camden has many popular bars-which on a sunday afternoon are full to bursting point with happy customers ...vet The Monarch is virtually empty ...we were a group of 12 planning on a relaxed afternoon enjoying a few drinks, and having a sunday roast...we chose The Monarch as it has spacious 'booths' and offers a delicious £10 sunday roastthe drinks order didn't go well....no bitter, no alcohol free lager, no fruit juice, no tap water,no atmosphere, a 'mixer' coke 'having' to be charged for as pint of coke ?!?!?!overall the bar felt like it needed a good clean, and for the staff to be energised ...this place feels like it's waiting to be close down, which is very sad - as it's in a great location, and is well designed + spacious ....non of us were happy to stay-or risk trying the food

trovo sia un pub piacevole. Consiglio di cercare un tavolo al piano di sopra. Lo sconsiglio il sabato sera, non mi è piaciuta affatto l'atmosfera.

der besuch lohnt sich. ein gut geführter pub mit sehr freundlichen und schnellen personal. mit musikdarbietung, dann kann man sich zwar nicht unterhalten aber dafür in "ruhe" sich auf die musik konzentrieren. ein ort zum länger verweilen.was mir nicht gefallen hat, war der preis für ein guinness: 4,95 pfund.trotzdem empfehle ich diesen pub.

Gemütliches Lokal an mit Livmusik an fast allen Abenden. Preise sind gut. Atmosphäre angenehm. Die Musikrichtungen variieren, je nach dem wer spielt.

Siamo stati qui una domenica a novembre e abbiamo pranzato in pomeriggio. Dispone di una sala grande al piano terra è una saletta piccola al primo piano dove si trovano i bagni. Abbiamo preso il classico arrosto della domenica e fish and chips come si vede nella foto. I prezzi sono nella media per un pub di Londra ed il cibo non era male abbastanza saporito e ben presentato. Le porzioni erano generose. C'erano due cose secondo me da rivedere: una è la pulizia è sicuramente da migliorare ( ragnatelle sui vetri che danno sul cortile nel retro per i fumatori e moquette sporca) nel locale e l'altra dal fatto che tutte le birre tradizionali pompate a mano a temperatura ambiente (real ales) non erano disponibili ma le birre disponibili erano comunque buone. Nota di merito va al personale molto preparato è i bagni erano molto puliti. Quindi per concludere senza infamia e senza lode.

Avslappnad atmosfär, snygg inredning! Vi åt en portion nachos och en portion chips with cheese, speciellt nachosportionen var jättegod. Rimliga priser. Flera tv-skärmar, möjlighet att se på sport. Biljardbord finns också.

Had an amazing time watching Billy Vincent but the night ended early with me feeling unwell but Mark and the doormen did an amazing job of looking after me and my belongings....." A massive thank you too you guys for taking care of me and making me feel safe.

Been there for a night hangout with friends. Bouncers were quite rude and it took me ages to find the manager and let my friends in (accused to be drunk while they were totally sober), staff behind the counter is quite lazy and not friendly or prompt at all. Soundtracks night is quite good though.

After visiting Camden Lock, this is a nice place to enjoy the music and have a good and cheap meal. You're surrounded by people that enjoy themselves with beer, music, pool and conversations. The place also looks nice (if you like alternative places, comparable to the Camden Lock style) to go out.

I popped in here for a drink after wandering around Camden Lock. This is a great looking pub with some big old sofas and lovely dark booths you can sit and chat in. It was quite empty but the staff were not overly helpful or friendly. Maybe later in the evening there is a friendlier vibe.

We popped in here for a quick drink/eat before going to a gig. I loved the look & decor of this place - just teh kind of pub where you can hide in the back & in the dark. Looked like there was plenty of seating room & clearly hosts a few gigs of it's own so would be nice to come back to see a band one day. Good choice of drinks & we did order a chicken wrap with chips which was ok although there was a bit too much cheese in the wrap. It gets a very good rating though for it's look & staff service even if food was average.

At the back of the bar there is a couple of sofa / booth for 5-6 people or more if you take some chairs around.the outside room is for smokers and usually closes around 23 if i remember correctly.the music was way too loud on the dancefloor.im used to loud concerts where i have ear protection but this is a bar... you shouldnt feel like this.im sure in case of control they would have get a nice fine for it... really annoying.from the back it was relatively "quiet"we had a few cocktails, nothing special to say. not fancy looking but not ridiculously small neither so ok for the price the guy taking care of the toilets almost sitting on the washbasin to make you give him a nickel was also annoying.

I'd been here years ago when it was a Wetherspoons, and the again after in became in the Monarch for a pint in the day, and it always seemed a reasonable boozer. What I didn't expect when I last went there for a folk music night was that the food would be so decent. I had a lovely halloumi and grilled vegetable platter with garlic bread which tasted great, even if it was a bit too dark to see what the vegetables were. The bands were pretty good too.

I know some places get busy and bar staff are overworked. However what I don't understand is how 3 other customers who arrived at the bar after me were served first. But, even then, I can also understand that it happens sometimes. But to top things off, try and get the manager, you can't, he/she's "too busy".Obviously this won't happen to everyone, but unless someone else is buying your drinks for you, save yourself the hassle and go somewhere nicer.

A lovely spacious pub that is wasted due to the completely rude bar staff. The girl behind the counter seemed to be more interested in looking at her self every 5 seconds and flicking her hair all over the place. If I wanted to stare at Barbie dolls all night then I would have gone to Hamley's. When I got served, she got frustrated when she had to ask me twice what I wanted because she couldn't understand my accent. Then, as she begrudgingly prepared my drink, I was trying to get her attention back so I could tell her I wanted my mixer separately from the spirit, but as she was too busy checking herself out in the bar mirror she ignored me and went right on ahead lashing a whole bottle of ginger into my rum. When I told her she had out a bit to much mixer in for me, so that next time she would know, she huffed and puffed and gave me a look of absolute disgust and THREW my change onto the bar. She was so unwelcoming and hideously unfriendly I wanted to leave immediately. But as my friend was playing there, I stayed and stuck it out for his set and some of the monotonous blues jam... which sounded more like a traffic jam than a blues jam. Won't be going back in a hurry unless its the middle of winter and I fancy a smoking shelter that's not

The type of pub that memorable weekends happen at... for better or worse! On that particular end of the camden strip that always means a messy night.Good for live music and a small but nice pub garden if you ever think to venture in day light hours...

We went to london last year and passed also from this pub! There was a band that singing and playing cover of the ACDC. Good beers, strange people, but fantastic atmosphere!

Please do not go here, this place is horrendous!! The people here are rude and incompetent, the bouncers do not have the mental intelligence beyond a six year old child

Popped in here on the 26th of May, after being given a flier for a bank holiday all day gig as we hopped off the tube, couldn't of been happier with the way the evening went, drinks were very reasonably priced, all the music was amazing (live and DJ sets) and we even bumped into singer Frank Turner and coyly asked for a photograph, amazing night best I've had in London! Just an amazing little pub, proper hidden gem. I will be back! :)

Seriously. The friendliest staff, best food, best service. If you are not stopping here, you are missing out.
