Fantastic tradition country pub...

We recently stayed here overnight and it was brilliant. Steve and his partner were so lovely and friendly nothing was too much trouble. The food it typical pub fare freshly cooked and plentiful. The breakfast was especially good. The room was basic but the bed was super comfy i would highly recommend this hidden gem !

Lovely pub, fantastic staff, excellent beer. Dogs welcome. Opening hours caught me out, but have since been back a couple of times, in fact time for a pint!!!!

"Absolutely Fabulous " Family + 3 dogs, lunch for my wife's 70th birthday. We were all made very welcome from the moment we stepped through the door. All staff were very attentive and the food was superb. Cannot recommend it highly enough. "Dog friendly " is an understatment". Thank you.

We were lucky to get a booking at the Mitre Inn having read the recommendations listed in our holiday info at the accommodation we were staying in. Boy we were so glad we went. It’s a typical rustic country pub with log burners providing warmth and ambiance. Staff were all very attentive and friendly giving us a lovely welcome. We all went for the roast beef and weren’t disappointed. The beef was beautiful, tender and plentiful along with the best stuffing balls, roast potato’s and Yorkshires-a good choice. Four different vegetables cooked to perfection accompanied our meal along with homemade gravy, it was simply delicious. Having said we couldn’t manage pudding, we saw most of them were homemade made, so changed our minds! Again, these were good sized portions served with your choice of custard, cream etc. I went for the Xmas spiced crumble which was to die for and I’m told the Dorset apple cake and sticky toffee pudding was so light and delicious, it was heaven. We left feeling warm and full, so pleased we had found this little treasure. Highly recommend anyone to visit this pub, you won’t be disappointed.

Great village pub - amazing pub food

We stayed two nights here. The room was comfortable. The chef cooks really good traditional pub food. There is a small bar frequented by locals every day so a great opportunity to chat. The owner is new to the pub and indeed hospitality but really goes the extra mile to make the inn a welcoming place. Nearby villagers often prefer this pub to their own which says it all. A really good traditional pub experience.

This pub is an absolute gem nestling in the sleepy village of Sandford Orcis. Steve the Landlord is most welcoming and the food is delicious. Both mains and desserts are homemade by the in house chef, and the menu changes slightly daily.

Stayed here overnight on way to a riding holiday on Dartmoor. Staff and locald very friendly and welcoming and food was excellent, especially dinner, was excellent. Room was spacious and comfortable . Would definitely recommend a visit

Really lovely pub. The atmosphere was great and reflects the village perfectly. It was so nice to sit for a meal and a couple of beers without feeling like you are being robbed! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff really friendly and helpful.

I recently visited with my wife and 3 kids, we all had the fish and chips and it was some of the best we've ever had. Far surpassing any fish and chip shop, clean plates all round. 10/10 Super friendly and polite staff and a lovely environment

Maybe we were unlucky with our choice but a lot of our food was clearly out of the freezer or a tin. Whitebait, scampi, thin chips, peas. The puddings appear to have been bought in. The strawberry Bakewell tart was a plain Bakewell tart with some strawberry jam on it. Something of a 70s pub meal throwback with gammon egg and chips and the proverbial tinned pineapple ring. Maybe the home made soup really was home made but we didn't have it. I guess the Wagyu beef burgers weren't home made. It was expensive for what it was. They have a good selection of real ales so good for a drink but perhaps not for food.

We decided to stay in the Mitre Inn for its location We visited the Haynes car museum and the Army Navy museum, then onto The Mitre Inn, located in the village of Stanford Orcas, what’s pretty place, the pun with two room as Bed and Breakfast was clean,bright and welcoming We had dinner in the pub both nights, the food was really good and a nice selection, recommend the steak cooked to perfection and the grilled fish was to die for, and the desserts home made, small friendly bar to sit and have a drink, the outside bar garden was up some steps but very nice… Would we stay again, YES…

We stayed 2 nights B&B here. We received a warm welcome and the room and bathroom were very spacious and well-appointed. Everything was spotless and the beds were very comfortable. Our dinners were delicious and there was plenty of choice for breakfast. It was a bit difficult to find down country lanes but well worth the effort. A great find!!

We had a brilliant stay at Cheryl and Allen's pub.. we were so well looked after and they made us feel welcomed.. our meals were all home cooked and beautifully presented so fresh and local produce! We would highly recommend a stay and especially the dinners!!

We were staying in Sherborne and looking for a casual, relaxing evening meal. The glowing reviews led us to opt for The Mitre. Not sure if it has changed hands or we hit a bad night but it was a massive disappointment. Things started well; as other reviews have said, the space is relaxed and cosy and we got a warm welcome at the bar. The menu was simple and straightforward. However, we waited more than an hour for our food, and when it arrived it was disappointing - particularly the beef ragu, which was really bland, with garlic bread that was hard and cold. By that point we just wanted to eat and leave so didn’t complain. We were glad we didn’t - as we were leaving a family with young children who had also waited well over an hour politely asked how much longer it was likely to be and the response was ‘it’ll come when it comes, there’s nothing I can do to make it happen.

I was looking for a restaurant in the Sherborne area that we could go to whilst in the area. I spotted this little gem on Tripadvisor and contacted them to see if they could cater for 15 of us for Sunday lunch. Cheryl emailed me the details over and was fantastic in accommodating us for the time of our choice. The food was excellent, it all came out piping hot and tasted amazing. The staff lead by Cheryl were brilliant and could not do enough to ensure our visit was just right. If you are looking for a Sunday lunch and you are in the area then I would definitely give it a try.

A fantastic family run pub with rooms. The welcome was warm and friendly, the beer and atmosphere was delightful. Nice rooms with comfortable beds all finished off with a very tasty breakfast.

This is a true traditional local country pub. It’s feels like your walking into the local community and someone’s living home - very cosy. It has a lovely wood burner and is full of character. The is a good choice if real ales on tap. There was a nice choice of meals with 3 vegetarian options. The food is very reasonably priced and good portion sizes - all homemade . The steak was full of flavour. There was fish also on the menu that was very tasty. The service was great and all staff friendly. Lovely country pub

Recently moved into the area and we are trying out some of the local options for a meal. Landlords Cheryl and Alan were away but their deputy landlady seemed very competent. Lots of narrow single track roads for us to get there, nestled deep in the Dorset countryside, but well worth it. It is not modern or trendy, but more like being in someone’s house. The landlords personal mementos all around, with a particularly good caricature of the owners! The food was all freshly cooked, and the menu provided a well balanced selection to suit most tastes. Even amongst the desert choices, a significant number were home made. The prices were very reasonable and we would happily return.

I absolutely love this place, brilliant food and pub garden. It has a lovely atmosphere and really relaxed, family owned and I have never had a bad meal here. It is a little gem, would highly recommend!

Here four years ago and luckily nothing has changed! Bit of a maze to find but it is worth coming. Friendly service, great British good in a lovely setting.

We stayed here one night before driving to Southampton to start a cruise. The Inn is a little "off the beaten track" but don't let that deter you. In fact it is part of the charm. It is set in a little village with some narrow lanes but drive slowly and it's not a problem. We thought is was great being able to stay in what we consider to be a true village pub. The hosts were extremely pleasant and helpful with advice about the area etc. The rooms are modernised and are extremely comfortable. We had dinner and breakfast and both meals were great. All in all a very pleasant stay.

The Beer was chilled and well kept. The Lamb Roast was one of the best I have ever eaten. The pub was traditional and not fussy. The Bakewell Tart was also amazing. Couldn't have asked for any more.

We were walking the Monarchs Way and chose to stay here overnight. We arrived exceptionally tired and wet after some appalling weather. Cheryl immediately offered to dry our boots and waterproofs. She even offered to do our washing! The heating was put on and fresh milk provided for drinks. The room was very clean and comfortable with a very smart modern bathroom. Plenty of toiletries were provided. The pub was very busy serving food, quite amazing for a Sunday night in the country. The food is all home cooked, delicious and generous portions. The breakfast choice next morning was excellent and the scrambled eggs were delicious. I would thoroughly recommend the food and accommodation to anyone. Thanks Cheryl and Allen for your hospitality.

Quiet pub in rural area - very much a country pub - believe in your sat nav even though roads very narrow!

A 2 night stay for 2 old friends going to the installation of Rev David Bond in Trent. What a welcome! Talk about the landlord and landlady going the extra mile! They don't do food on a Monday. Well they did for us 2 and for 2 other friends. Full choice of the menu as well! Our twin bedded room was spotlessly clean everything you could possibly need was provided. We were even given fresh milk and softened water for the kettle. We were also provided with bottled drinking water. The meal on the Monday night was lovely, cooked by the landlady. Breakfast has lots of choice. Fresh fruit, Yoghurt, Cereals, Orange Juice. Proper coffee and Earl Grey Tea available. The full works cooked breakfast set us up for the day. Lots of toast and good quality Marmalade and Jam. The pub downstairs is "Proper Traditional" Slate floors, Lit Log Burner, 3 Real Ales (well kept). Nearly always Doom Bar, the 2 others vary, chosen with TLC by the landlord. A lovely welcome in the bar by the locals and their dogs. The pub has 2 dogs very friendly and they got on well with all the visiting woofs. I cannot fault this place. Well worth a visit. The 2 letting rooms 1twin, 1king size double are no dogs. However, the Shepherds Hut in the garden, bedroom, bathroom and with its own log burner will soon be up and running. This is going to be Dog Friendly. I will be back soon with husband and dogs! This place is AWESOME!!!

We chose The Mitre for a special celebration and the whole experience was perfect. Cheryl and Alan are fantastic hosts and the pub is full of charm and character. The evening meal was outstanding - lovely fresh vegetables and tender, flavoursome meat followed by sensational puddings! We made the most of The Mitre Inn by staying overnight - the room was clean, comfortable and to an exceptional standard. Breakfast was cooked to perfection - ample and delicious!

This is the sort of pub for which England is famous yet is dying out in favour of gastro-pubs and gin holes. Long may it survive. Along with the church and village hall, this makes up the centre of this little community tucked into the lanes of the Dorset/Somerset border. If you can imagine a guy coming in from a shoot with a rabbit hanging from his belt and a spaniel at his side, you'll get a good feel for this place. But add to that some cosy letting rooms with a nice selection of toiletries and great books, including one of the local history, straightforward and well prepared pub grub and breakfast plus a willingness to make you a buttie for the onward journey - it all goes to make up a gem. They even post one things left behind! Pity we are seldom this way or it would be a regular stopping off point.

Stayed for 3 nights here, and the room was a good size, with a king size bed (The Hummingbird room), large en-suite, with walk in shower. The pub is a little tricky to get to, as the lane in places is single track with passing places. The owners, Cheryl and Allen really made us very welcome, and felt like you were staying with family. We ate there one night, and the menu had a good mix of dishes. I had coq au vin and hubby had pork loin steaks. The pub is over 150 years old, with flagstone floors, fireplace - so a proper pub! Plenty of parking right outside. Good quality ingredients used for breakfast, on my last day I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Would not hesitate to recommend a stay or meal/drink. The meal couldn't have been better. Roast Sunday lunch for a party of six people and four, well-behaved, dogs. Any requests to have meat cooked differently, requests for extras - all accommodated with a smile. Fantastic pub.

Two well-decorated guest rooms, a traditional bar, and great food. A delightful place to stay. Convenient for Haynes Motor Museum and the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Good value too.

I’ve come to the Mitre several times now, each with family. Even though Cheryl & Al are family friends, it in no way affects my opinion on their lovely, welcoming, dog friendly pub! Their roasts are absolutely lovely and they have a vast range of beverages so there’s something for everyone! I highly recommend stopping off here after a nice country walk or paying a visit to them if you’re in the area! I’ve not found a pub that’s as welcoming as this one!

Always delicious and plentiful food at sensible prices, and ales are kept well. Friendly and intimate atmosphere, long-term landlord and landlady (a rarity these days). After our supper, the landlord even helped us fix one of our bicycles - service above and beyond! Friends returned for Sunday roast the following day and they tell me it was every bit as good. It had been a few years since my previous visit - much too long - so will try to visit again soon. Thanks again, Allen & Cheryl!

Lovely atmosphere with very friendly landlord and landlady. Superb food...good variety..and plenty of drink chouces. Locals also in the pub...aat the bar and also eating, all known by name by the chatty landlady. We were immediately included in the conversation which made us feel welcomed. As we are local we will return many times without doubt.

We stayed at the Mitre inn for 2 nights. When we arrived, we got a very warm welcome from the landlady. The room was nice and clean. In the evening we had a lovely time at the bar and had for the first time rhubarb cider, which we enjoyed very much.

Recently booked a table for lunch for my partners birthday lunch. I work in the hospitality industry and I was impressed by the food and the great customer service. My German Shepherd Toka was also made to feel welcome which was great. I would not hesitate to go again next time we are down in Dorset and the the roast beef went down well with the Birthday man to! Great selection of vegetables to share to!

After a tough day at work, The Mitre Inn was an easy stroll through the village for a relaxing meal. Thursday evening is the village’s collective wind-down night, when the bar and restaurant are usually full, and the chat invigorating. A delicious meal of chicken breast in sauce, and a pint of well-kept Doombar: perfect.

Booked for lunch with family at this hidden gem of a pub. It was excellent. Were greeted by Cheryl the landlady and were served our drinks very promptly. Ordered the lunches and despite the place being full they arrived freshly cooked and piping hot, with a goodly supply of extra vegetables. They offer 3 sizes of roast, Adult, Medium/OAP or child, all reasonably priced. They also offer delicious well presented puddings.

As a solo traveller it was good to be heartily welcomed and to be well looked after by the smiling girl behind the bar and, in particular, by the friendly landlady Cheryl.

Sandford Orcas is a lovely small village hidden down tiny roads in a deep valley near Sherborne. The pub is in an attractive old building that has not been smartened up and made a gastro pub, which is great to see. The staff were really friendly and lots of nice dogs. Delicious home cooked Sunday lunch and proper puddings such as apple crumble and bread and butter pudding. Great beer and walks to work it off afterwards!

This pub is excellent, if, like me, you enjoy a good old fashioned eating and drinking place. Many establishments have become gentrified, and serve small portions of fancy food at extortionate prices, however The Mitre has a very friendly British menu. I had a roast beef, which came with a nice selection of vegetables, and for pudding had a delicious apple crumble.

Wow- what a great weekend! We arrived Friday to a packed bar and Yeovil's Ukulele band- The Mitre was rocking! Enjoyed a wonderful weekend of drinking supervised by The Mitre's landlords Allen and Cheryl. We enjoyed a personalised welcome despite the number of thirsty punters in the bar!

My partner and I stayed here for one night bank holiday weekend. We were greeted by cheryl who was very welcoming and let us know how things worked in the room.

Me and my other half stayed here over bank holiday weekend, so glad we did cant fault it at all. Cheryl and Alan doing a wonderful job of looking after you, and Cheryl will cook you the best fry up in the morning.

Reservamos una mesa para el almuerzo del domingo, nos alegramos porque estaba lleno! Dieron una amable, cálida bienvenida. Ofrecieron una muestra de la sidra local antes de pedir lo que es una buena idea, una buena selección de cervezas y sidra. También asados del domingo había una buena selección de entrantes y platos principales a precios muy razonables. Ambos tuvimos los champiñones ajo en tostadas para empezar que eran deliciosas. Para los principales, mi marido tenía la carne asada y tuve el eglefino y cangrejos de ruibarbo (fabuloso! ). Ambos estaban bien presentado y servido caliente con un gran plato de verduras de temporada. Buena selección de postres, se recomiendo especialmente el apricot y frangipane higo - delicioso! El pub está amueblado con sencillez, pero tiene un ambiente acogedor. Los miembros jóvenes todo el personal fue amable y atento. Sin duda lo recomiendo y volveré pronto.

We stayed overnight at the Mitre Inn so that we could attend an event at Sherborne Castle. Dinner at the Mitre was one of the best we've had all year, with a great pint of ale beforehand, and a fine bottle of Chardonnay with the meal. The bedroom was extremely comfortable (the Hummingbird Room), having been refurbished to a very high standard, and benefiting from the Mitre being in a very quiet village - you could have heard a pin drop. Breakfast was sumptuous and Cheryl is a charming host. What a superb overnight stop - we wish it had been two nights. Worth returning to.

This is a place we come to regularly. Set just to the side of Gold Hill this place has fantastic views over the Blackmoor Vale from a set of wooden clad terraces. Not only that but the food is good. Try the smashed avocado with jam on sour bread for example - a great lunch. Or the ham sandwiches - traditional doorsteps with local ham. Not expensive either. £31 for the 3 of us including a beer, a wine and a coffee. Well worth a visit.

A group of 10 walkers booked in advance and ordered our food in the morning. Nice welcome to record our lunch orders even though pub not open. Food not cheap but good quality and nicely presented. My dressed crab salad was delicious. Sharing fish platters were well received too. Sausage egg and chips spoken well of too. Nice selection of local ales and of course the delectable Thatcher 's Gold cider which was ideal after a hot 4 mile walk. Off the beaten track but well worth finding with satnav.

I visited this pub twice in one week and have been twice before. It's fairly close to home, and has a nice friendly feel to it. On 3 out of the 4 visits the food was good. On one visit I went with a group of friends and had lasagne. It was absolutely fine, but in no way outstanding. Friends who had chicken curry were very disappointed. It was full of bones and lacked taste. Other friends who had quiche said it was very good. The desserts were really good - homemade. The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. We should have made comment about the curries but were too polite! I would recommend Sunday lunch here.

We visited with our 18 month old for Sunday Lunch and it was absolutely delicious. They were very accommodating of our little one and the food was delicious. The roast dinner was gorgeous and a very generous portion with roast potatoes that were to die for. We would definitely go back.

Walked into this cosy pub to a very warm welcome. Nice menu with easy going snacks, sandwiches and specials. I had the fish platter, my wife had the brie ploughmans, all excellent. Group of four at table next to us had baguettes and omelettes and all was good there. Good proper pub food. Will visit again.

I was due to arrive between 5-6 but was running a little late and Cheryl called to check all was okay - I missed the call but the answerphone message was lovely. Arrived and was greeted by Cheryl and she could not have done more for me! I was provided with a flask of milk, big bottle of water, a local magazine and lots of little other lovely touches which made you feel welcome. I stayed in the twin room and was impressed by how clean it was, how comfortable and how cosy it felt. The heating was turned on for my arrival so I would not feel cold which was another lovely thought. I had to leave early in the morning but Cheryl was incredibly accommodating and put out all the breakfast bits for me at 7 a.m. Thank you for making my quick stay so lovely, I will definitely recommend you to others and will look at coming back myself as such a lovely quiet village and so close to Sherborne. Thank you!!

An excellant antidote to raging thirst and tired feet! Although quiet out of season, this hostelry provides excellent beer and a relaxing atmosphere. Well worth a visit!

We had such a great weekend away at the Mitre Inn, we are planning another trip back. The room was exceptionally clean and spacious with a walk in shower, the bed was comfy and had a kettle etc, Cheryl the owner gave us a flask of milk each day for our tea which to me was a special touch. The breakfast was lovely as was the dinners. There is a comfortable feel to the bar with a big fire and comfy seats. The Mitre Inn is dog friendly and have two gorgeous dogs Finley and Freya (dad and daughter)who love the customers. The pub is really old (1800s)and although refurbished has many of the original fixings, In the end Cheryl and Alan are a exceptional credit to their trade and felt that we left being friends. I would recommend staying here with its beautiful surroundings and friend friendly people.

The Mitre Inn nestles in the bottom of a valley and is approached through a series of narrow lanes. The journey is worthwhile because not only is there a warm welcome but the food is delicious - our party went for the fish platter or fish and chips. The former as a main course is a hearty plateful (the whitebait was particularly good - I know that because I had to "help out" with it) and my fish was cooked to perfection. The only problem is that with passing years we have declining appetites and so didn't have space for the puddings which sounded equally tempting. For three people including drinks the bill came to about £40 which I reckon is excellent value. Therefore, we'll have to come back!

If you are looking for a very pleasant country pub with "good pub grub" near Sherborne in Dorset then I have no reservations recommending this friendly place. We went there for Sunday lunch on verbal recommendation and were very happy we did. The Sunday roast was very enjoyable, the service friendly and all at a very fair price (3 and a half of us ate and drank for £60.) We drove there along extremely narrow roads (don't give up - it really is there somewhere). Quite a few people obviously make what is certainly a pleasant walk or cycle up there. The general setting is very peaceful. We will definitely go again. Thanks to the Mitre Inn, you're doing a great job.
