The Station Kitchen in West Dorset

We had a wonderful anniversary lunch. The sea bream and my steak were great. The pre lunch stroll on the beach made it a perfect day out.

I'm disappointed with the restaurant we visited. Although the concept and decor were great, the delivery of service was not. We waited for over an hour and a half for our main course, which we had to chase the staff for. While the fish was good, the potatoes were overcooked and chewy. They did offer to replace them, but we didn't want to wait any longer. When we received the bill, they did take the optional service charge off the bill. However, we still had to go to the desk to pay the bill as it took a while for the staff to bring the machine to settle the bill. At this point, we were the only ones left in the restaurant, so there was no excuse for the delay. Maybe it was just a bad night, but it could have been a lot better!

Decided to try this restaurant based on the spectacular reviews... Was a party of three giddy with excitement . I am not normally a person who submits negative reviews , however felt so disappointed I felt I should give my honest feedback . I ordered the cach of the day 🐟 a whole fish very bland with crushed potatoes in tower like shape , then dressed with a prickly salad leaves the ones that you cannot chew unless a farm animal...... presentation was lack lustre seems like no effort had gone into this creation ..... Really underwhelming and at £ 28.00 more high end price........ so expected something more............? the salad was so prickly I thought I had swallowed a fish bone SCARY..... such a shame as the location and ambience fabulous ...but it's not just about the venue as the food has to be the STAR ⭐......not on this occasion ...

Food was average,service took a long time I’d say forgotten 1 1/2 hours, no pints for beer so,£7 for 440 ml 🙈, and up to £54 for a bottle of wine! Would I return….. NO..

Nice restaurant with a great concept. Some sort of confusion with our booking (we did have a screenshot of it) meant we ended up in the group carriage which wasn't great as we were a table of two (sat side by side) and it was very noisy (not the actual fault of the restaurant). The staff were amazing, very attentive and went above and beyond. The starters were a little underwhelming but the main and desert were excellent. I would go there in the future if we visit the area again.

A fab dinner...food couldn't have been better. We had trout, cod then sticky toffee...excellent. Only minor issue was it was very hot

This is a little gen, tucked away on the end of an old railway line. in West Bay. We have been here a few times now, we make the mistake of ordering the Sunday lunch "fat controller". It wasn't a mistake really but don't like wasting food, there was so much, so if you are hungry, we recommend it. There is a large range of cocktails to choose from, the food menu choice is extensive and can be viewed online, we recommend you check it out. The Sunday lunch and locals lunch, during the week is good value if you are watching the pennies.

I've been to this wonderful place around 5 times now, and it's about time I made a review. Exotic, great atmosphere, excellent staff. The whole decor takes you back in time, and sitting in the carriage on a windy evening while the carriage sways gives you that experience that you feel like you are on a train. For me, it's the full restaurant experience I want. The food itself, well, it's that good you just have to indulge yourself with 3 courses or more, and I can tell you that you will be more than satisfied. It's bigger plates of food than you expect, and the presentation and flavour are first class (no pun intended). The staff are also very attentive and catering to your needs. You never leave dissatisfied, just a full belly and a smile on your face. I'm always recommending the place to friends, and it's definitely a hit for the dating scene. 10/10

Always amazing food whenever we visit. First time in the front carriage which was just as beautiful as the other. Good service and nice wine selection.

It’s rare I write a review but felt I had to after our experience. I had such high expectations after all the positive things I had heard from others. Firstly the starter was an absolute joke!! Four slices of cut salami sausage with some purée dotted around the side doesn’t quite meet the £10 price tag. Nothing on the plate was homemade so unsure why it would be on the menu in a place that class themselves as fine dining. Moving on to the mains… I had beef fillet which was underdone and so tough I could barely cut it let alone chew it. The potato was greasy and nothing had an flavour. My partner ordered the fish curry which admittedly the sauce was very nice but the fish was battered and again flavourless and greasy! It was an unusual concept to deep fry in batter and then add to a curry? We both left our meals as they were inedible. After explaining to the waiter it wasn’t up to expectations he removed the service charge??? I thought this was odd as the service was absolutely fine and it’s optional anyway. The only positive was the decor

Fantastic use for the old station and a couple of old train carriages!

The surreal experience of gazing at a redundant platform while sitting in a static train carriage. There is no engine, but neither is there meant to be. The walls are festooned with huge clocks, an enormous ampersand, large pieces of metal (a 4ft-tall industrial iron thing is bolted to the floor in the middle of the carriage), fluffy baubles and twinkling lights. Candleholders are large pink flamingos and figurines, and the whole effect is utterly charming.

We travelled a decent way to come to the station kitchen for a special birthday meal and were sadly left a bit disappointed. The decor is fun but we were sat at the head of the Brunel carriage and the lights were so blindingly bright and they weren’t able to turn them down. The rest of the carriage appeared to be set with much more atmospheric lighting fit for a dinner. Cocktails to begin were lovely but tended towards the sweet end. Lots of speciality cocktails available but a few more traditional would be nice. Service was friendly but slow. It was a long time to get bread. Focaccia was well made but the butter was whipped with honey which was far too sweet to start a meal. Starters were great, we had most of them on the menu across our group and all enjoyed. Moving onto mains, there were two main issues here: temperature and seasoning. Both the brill and the fillet steak were on the cool side of tepid. My brill dish was entirely under-seasoned to a fault, whereas the sirloin steak was far too salty. Also for being so close to the sea, surely more focus should be put on high quality seafood? We didn’t delve too far into the puddings but a couple of us had a classic STP, good sauce and ice cream but sponge was a bit dense. On the wine side of things we had some delicious reds and whites around the £50 mark which we thoroughly enjoyed. We have to say, even though the prices are on the menu, we were shocked at how much the bill came to. The restaurant charged high end, almost London, prices but not delivering on quality. It sadly left us with a bitter taste in our mouths.

What an absolute gem of a restaurant with wonderful menu of lovingly cooked local West County produce. A must visit if your ever in West Bay enjoying life.

Tried the new venture The SK’s pub lunch’ with friends and we had a really good time. The carriage was warm and toasty on a cold but dry January day the staff as usual were lovely and our meals enjoyable. First time I have had crispy eggs and they were excellent with a runny yolk and perfectly cooked white will have them again! The sharing plate also looked great as did on the all of the food we saw going to other diners always good to see what food is available!

We have visited this restaurant on 2 or 3 occasions and we have had beautifully cooked, flavoursome meals in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere every time. This restaurant has become a nostalgic favourite to us, as a couple, as every visit has been consistently enjoyable (for food and atmosphere). It is so well received to find a restaurant that is unimposing and welcoming (for dogs also in the old station building rather than in the carriages although we have eaten in both) yet does not break the bank and serves meals with such a well derived menu of interesting ingredients and flavours, without over-complicating matters. The venue is quirky, vibrant and of a 1920s, art deco design (I think). The setting is unique, being set in the the old railway station (and carriages on the old tracks) with a chef that understands flavours and hosts a good combination of meals, with the Penang Seafood curry a firm favourite. Love this place. Our favourite restaurant in Bridport and we will be back soon. In a couple of weeks actually, and we live in Hampshire. ;)

A very mixed experience. The carriage we dined in (Brunel) I think, was quirky and the theme and decor certainly different and interesting. However the menu was disappointing. Starters were tasty but a very limited choice of main courses. Although seen on line beforehand I had assumed specials etc would have complimented the choices. I hadn't expected the pizzas to be be available in our A la Carte carriage but am guessing as it's a very quiet time of year all guests were in the one carriage. However spending £38 for a beef main course for example, served alongside pizzas........that didn't feel like a "special" dining experience.Although I appreciate the fine dining and pizza style dining are probably separate in high season. It's a great venue with huge potential but perhaps needs more reasonable priced innovative dishes on the a la Carte dinner menu to sustain local revisits which really are needed during the low season. Service was odd - too much clearing whilst eating - and not up the standard expected of the main menu prices.

Amazing place! Very quirky. Although the food is on the expensive side, it is fantastic! The service, atmosphere and train coach setting are amazing. Staff are also great (especially Lu Lu). It was my wife’s and I’s wedding anniversary and the staff even made sure there was an anniversary card and small gift on our table (nice, personal touch). We’ll be coming back again.

My partner and I attended for New Year’s Eve dinner. Lovely quirky setting. However service was really bad and my beef wellington was served to me with the beef still wrapped in plastic from the cooking process. Not much of an apology given. Ended up leaving without eating a main it was that bad an experience. Wrote them an email complaining about my experience and gave them a week to reply. Nothing. So here’s my review I guess. Wouldn’t recommend.

We came here for lunch after reading an article in the Dorset Magazine. Wonderful quirky carriage and the food was excellent. We had the Mediterranean Moussaka - delicious - not really like a moussaka at all and my partner had the veggie curry - wonderful flavours and tastes. Staff were excellent. Will be back soon.

Very overpriced. Pizza's very dry. Money taken as deposit without consent then not taken off from final bill. Management very dismissive of complaints. Would not recommend.

The prices here are comparable with London restaurants, but this is just Bridport where prices are mostly about 50% lower. That gives an expectation of attention to detail, which was sadly missing. Clearly the chef is talented, but the rest is frankly shambolic. The menus have some imaginative touches and the food is nice, but that alone does not justify these prices. Where do we start? The web site describes their beloved antique railway carriages, giving the impression we would be dining in comfortable passenger coaches as commonly used for dining on many heritage railways, but in reality they are parcels vans with random old tables and chairs inside - and no windows! Much is made of their hand-made special focaccia bread - we were given one very small piece each, which was indeed delicious but no second piece was offered and the bread plates were taken away before the starter even arrived! This seemed very mean. Soup (veloute) was nice but served with no spoons, and waiting staff swiftly disappeared! So we had to wait for someone to come back and ask for some. Then dessert spoons were brought, and left in a stack on the table, not laid. Eventually someone else came with some soup spoons, by which time we had started. Main courses arrived at different times, although we were only a group of 3. The waiting staff had little idea of how to wait table with any sort of formality, reaching over customers to serve others, and generally demonstrating a total lack of training in proper waiting etiquette. Toilets are outside at the end of the platform, basic Portaloos decorated with a vase full of dried rushes! This would have been tolerable except that being a very wet night, it was necessary to put a coat on to get to the toilet, and when you get there, there's nowhere to hang your coat! My wife complained that she had nowhere to hang or place her handbag other than on the wet, dirty floor. Not good enough! When a gent takes a lady out for what is anticipated to be an expensive meal, she gets dolled up and gets out her best accessories, not expecting to have to put a £500 handbag down on a wet floor and drape her dress coat over a sink. All of these seem like small things, but overall it demonstrates complete lack of attention to detail which is not good enough at these top-dollar prices. The place could easily be so much better if they had a good Maitre D' in charge who would deal with all these issues. As it is, I'm sorry, although the food is good, the experience is just not worth anything like the money charged.

Station Kitchen has always been consistently excellent every time we have been. Staff are always friendly and helpful and food is always beautifully presented and very much enjoyed. The owners went out of their way to accommodate our wishes which was so very kind of them. We are looking forward to our next visit as always. Thank you x

Unfortunately not a good experience. Cost us £160 for very little food. Kids chips were £6-7 in a tiny dish and the cheese board for £7 had 6 grapes and charcoal crackers. I wanted a meal off the kids menu as the locals dishes 2 for £19 only had two options. This was frowned upon when I asked. Kids meals at £15 each is far too expensive. The added service charge of £18 was really shocking. In total we spent £160 for 4 adults, one being a kids meal and I wish we went somewhere else. A lot of the dishes were extra too, for example if you wanted the salmon as a starter that wasn’t included in the locals deal despite being listed. Save your money and go elsewhere. We booked because we wanted the pizzas but these are only served in the evening which isn’t made clear. We wanted to cancel but would have cost us £10 per head.

Absolutely superb. Great service, amazing decor, fabulous food. Not first visit, would recommend without hesitation.

Well what can I say, most of us only write a review when you've had a fab meal or poor experience this is true and I'm afraid ours was poor. My brother in-law was down from Manchester loves trains and worked for many years on the Northern Bell as a waiter as second job because he loves trains. We are not snobs but all have been in the catering game for many years having fish knifes as butter knifes wasnt a good start. We all went for the locals deal £19 for two courses which only had two choices per starter and main course non-veggie and veggie. The starters were ok but the main course well we ordered corn fed chicken more like a chick. The drinks are over priced and wasn't impressed with the whole experience was more of a tourist rip off and added 12.5% service charge which was optional and we declined. This place is over rated so unless you have deep pockets or on diet give it a swerve.

Arrived early but got to spend time alone taking in all it has to see!!! It’s one hell of an experience I’d recommend as a treat, we loved it, so full of character and a nice atmosphere. If you love trains then test yourselves.

Very disappointed this time. Portion sizes miniscule and the side variant of chips, 5 chunks were black and hard. Yes, I should have sent them back. The table next to us found the tiny patt of butter highly amusing, they immediately were offered more, and more bread. All we got was a tiny slither finger, which meant the tiny patt of butter was plenty. Went there a year ago and everything was great, I wonder why different this time?

Great food in an old railway carriage. Good service, a little chilly but warmed up as more people arrived. A plentiful Sunday roast with all the trimmings, hot and tasty.

Came with a group of 10 and service was outstanding! Sophie was always on hand to get us what we needed.

After two weeks coming to you as half way point to take my elderly mum to Cornwall and back. We thoroughly enjoyed our roasts with you and desserts. However I decided to have the port which was beautiful. Please could I ask where you came to find your port glasses which made the port go down very nicely. Many thanks Selina.

Came here for friends 30th wedding anniversary and firstly the food was excellent BUT Sophie made the night as she was totally great and a credit to the Station. She was fun ! Rapped and was just outstanding. Cannot fault anything !

This was a surprise date night for my partner and oh my gosh, it was amazing! The setting, the team and the incredibly delicious food and drinks. We had fried shrimp balls with curry sauce as a sharing starter. A pizza, waffle fries and salad...

Knowing we were visiting West bay chose this restaurant to celebrate the wife's birthday due to reviews and images. We were not disappointed. The carriage was quirky and beautifully decorated adding to the overall experience. We shared a starter of goats cheese and for mains...

We could see the logistical issues facing the team here: the kitchen is 'divorced' from the diners, by necessity of the very concept of this restaurant, and indeed this did present issues on our visit. We arrived promptly at 6.30 had drinks in the bar...

Celebrating our wedding anniversary the ambience and service were both excellent. Our main course was delicious and the puddings were fab-u-lous 😋 The staff were friendly and helpful and had all signed a Happy Anniversary card. A wonderful evening.

Station Kitchen is a beautiful setting with a gorgeous interior and ambiance. We were there celebrating my Dad’s 80th and I can’t fault the initial communication as it all seemed very efficient. Overall the food was really good too and it was a nice touch...

A wonderful evening in beautiful, unique and opulent surroundings. Such a lovely idea to make use of the station house and the carriages. Exceptional food quality. Be prepared for some expensive dishes for those on a tight budget although the children’s menu is very reasonable. Staff very friendly and overall atmosphere very welcoming, this will be one of the highlights of our stay in Dorset.

Just had a Sunday roast with the wife in one of the train carriages. The food was very nice and the service was excellent. A unique setting as well to eat. We will make a point of retuning as we enjoyed it very much. P.s. The local beer wasn't too shabby either......

Amazing food experience- undeniable- after a rather frosty greeting. Service was mixed ( dare I say it quality could have been better) but I’m not sure I’d have noticed if our welcome had been warm! We will return next year no doubt as this is a lovely venue.

We had a lovely lunch in this quirky restaurant. It's a great place with a super atmosphere and great dishes. Well worth a visit. Staff are absolutely great and extremely friendly.

This is the second time we have visited The Station Kitchen, once again it was a fantastic meal with fabulous staff.

Being taken out for a mystery sunday lunch turned out to be a real treat and surprise. Bridport old railway station has been converted into a restaurant kitchen and the old waiting room is now a bar with very exotic and eclectic decoration. After being escorted into one of two converted carriages both having details of their long working history we eagerly scanned the menus and opted for the Sunday roast dinner. The portions are very generous and beautifully presented which may explain why every table was full and booking essentially. A week day and kids menu are available and the drinks menu is fascinating with a good selection of non alcoholic drinks. All the food is sourced locally and couldn't be fresher. The staff and service are all very relaxed and friendly, despite the novelty of the settings this is a serious and professional establishment. We left very contented with a huge sense of nostalgia for a walk along the beach. WELL DONE 👍

A nice looking place albeit a bit kitsch in areas. Pleasant service and very kindly gave us a small card and gift for the birthday girl which was kind. Pricing however was high and our steak easily hidden underneath an onion! Which unfortunately was also well over cooked and not medium. Felt like the large plates were loaded with the cheaper items and scrimped on the meats/fish etc.

Sunday lunch was very poor, undercooked roast potatoes and the meal swimming in a gravy, which tasted as if it were made from low quality gravy granules, which in turn swamped the taste of the rest of the food.

Our third time of trying to eat at the Station Kitchen and we was not disappointed, young staff were friendly, very knowledgeable and helpful. Great food and fantastic atmosphere.

Nicely presented food and very friendly staff. We visited for lunch and enjoyed the quality on offer. The focaccia bread was lovely but there was a lot of it and we couldn't eat all the crisps we were given.

Some pretty fine dining to be had here, not somewhere for a cheap meal but certainly a venue for a great meal. The kids had a curry which was great, with good portions. My wife and I both had steaks which were spot on. We were too full for dessert, so perhaps on our next visit we'll go lighter on the mains and sides so we have space.

Delicious meal in stunning surroundings

We stopped here for a Sunday roast, we ate in the sheltered outdoor area as we had two dogs with us. Staff were very accommodating and even brought out some dog biscuits for us. We had all three meats between the three of us, the pork and chicken were lovely but the beef quite tough though well cooked. We found some of the vegetables to be a little too al dente and the roast potatoes and meat were quite hard to cut with the knives provided. The cauliflower cheese was lovely. We also had the panna cotta which was absolutely wonderful. Good selection of drinks to choose from. For the price of the mains we were a little disappointed.

What a lovely place to eat & a pleasure to eat somewhere different to the norm ! gr8 staff - food was amazing & cocktails gr8 value. Really worth a visit & when we are back in this area again will most certainly book a table to go back. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Amazing place so relaxed food and staff excellent

The friendly and efficient staff were at lengths to talk us through the menu, and provide a first class service. The menu was creative, using locally sourced produce and cooked to perfection. All in all, a wonderful experience.

The food, service and chilled ambience here were all pretty awesome! It was a hot day so we ate our lunch on the station platform but had a good nose into the two carriages and the super-kitsch decor! Will definitely return to sample a few more cocktails and more of the tasty menu!

What a lovely treat for our 26th wedding anniversary. They gave us a nice card and fridge magnet too. Food was excellent. Rich if you like that sort of thing.

Went here for a birthday celebration, staff were really friendly, service was very good and the food was amazing!

Fabulous decor, friendly staff food was OK but small portions (we both had 3) we needed a snack not long after. And look out for the 12% service charge, its quick expensive for what it is.

Had food poisoning after eating here. Contacted them the following day just to let them know, not asking for a refund or anything else. Completely failed to accept it may have been their food and accepted no responsibility at all! Tried to tell me I had a bug. VERY disappointed. Food was good, but very overpriced. Ate in The George in West Bay two nights later and the food was better and a fraction of the price

Defo the best, lightest freshest Oatcakes I've ever had (RIP Cairn's). I moved away from the area over a decade ago and their boxes of fresh oaty disks are always a payday go to.

The food was delicious especially the cheese board! Sitting in the train carriage definitely made the experience better, it had a great vibe to the experience. The staff were so friendly and professional. Would definitely go again.

We had an absolutely fantastic evening last night. From the moment we walked up to the lit station and carriages to saying goodbye to our waitress, it couldn't have been better. The food was excellent, especially the lamb and desserts. There was also a lovely touch of a birthday card and small cake with candle for my partner. Definitely recommend and well definitely be back if we're down this way again.

Fantastic venue. Great food & service. It is the old Railway station. We ate in a railway carriage, wonderfully decorated, and every aspect of my wife's 60th birthday was catered for by wonderful service and ambience. The food was absolutely fantastic, the staff were brilliant. We should call Michael Portillo and tell him this is a railway journey he should make, which was the only sadness of the day for me that a wonderful railway and station was lost, but its spirit lives on and more.

Quite expensive, but but the food is brilliantly presented and the ambiance is terrific. We enjoyed our visit.

Absolutely awesome place, great atmosphere, staff are friendly and polite and always go the extra mile to make you feel totally at ease, food was unbelievably good especially the Bakewell Cheesecake could of ate a bucket load 😂😂😂, so if you want amazing food in an amazing atmosphere on a train carriage then this is your place
