We wanted a day out in Dorset which would include lunch. After studying both the map and Trip Advisor reviews came up with the Chetnole Inn. Leaving the car at home we travelled by train to Chetnole station - a station where you have to request the train to stop. This all worked well and then a two thirds of a mile walk along quiet and attractive country lanes to the pub. We were given a warm welcome and very friendly service. The food was good - exceptional home made soup - and then pub favourites which were well received. At first we were the only customers but within an hour the property was busy but everyone was well looked after. There are outside tables at the front and a large, well tended, beer garden at the back. Highly recommended.

We went on curry night. To be honest it was a bit odd. Far too much good for two people. The onion baji was over cooked, samosa was ok but far too much. The curries were all 3 varieties rather than selecting the one you wanted. The Lamb rogan josh was tasty, the chicken korma was nice but the curried veg wasn’t good. Rice and naan nice. The sweet spiced rice dessert didn’t have much flavour, needed to be sweeter and have nutmeg or cinnamon added for the warm spice….. so overall ok but wouldn’t return.

We knew this was a no nonsense pub when we saw the tractor parked up outside the front door and its driver enjoying a (no doubt) well-earned pint. Like Geoff B we had "escaped' from Summer Lodge for a relaxed evening. We too thought the food was excellent - one of the best burgers I've had in a pub anywhere and my wife had a very good Thai chicken curry. Great ales and decent wines, with cheery staff and very fair prices. They dealt with the COVID precautions sensibly and well. There's a garden at the back with views over fields. Nice pub, nice people, good fare.

We were staying at Summer Lodge in Evershot, but after a rather disappointing meal there, we decided to try to find something nearby that offered simpler fare at a more-sensible price. The Acorn could only accommodate us at 6:60 pm – too early – and the Sheaf of Arrows has closed (again), so the Chetnole Inn was one of the nearest places that had vacancies. What can I say? We really fell on our feet here. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I had the spicy fish stew, my wife had the plaice, and both were delicious. The cheeseboard afterwards was excellent, the Butcombe Bitter and the Sauvignon Blanc were both excellent accompaniments, and we can’t fault the service or the Covid precautions. The ambiance is a little stark – the décor is rather ‘no-nonsense’, with scrubbed tables and stone & wood flooring – but that added to our experience, rather than detracted from it.This place is a hidden gem, and well worth seeking out. I sincerely hope that they survive – and thrive – in the difficult times we find ourselves in.

For some reason I was expecting the food offering at this exquisite village pub to be a little more elaborate. The number of food awards it has won would certainly suggest this. In fact, we enjoyed a lovely, but simple, pub lunch sitting outside. and found the quality of the different options to be top ranking. No reason why food awards should not be awarded for just this sort of uncomplicated sustenance. The pub itself is lovely and the welcome is smiley and genuine. Many thanks.

New years day classic/military vehicle run, admitted there were a few of us, I had two young children with me who were cold and just wanted a warm drink before we all set off again in our open air vehicles, leaving our partners to order we ventured to the rest room, returning to the bar area we were told, they, couldnt do the hot drinks, as they, havent enough cups !! except all around us on the tables were dirty cups as a crowd of people had already gone. We were annoyed to think that no one offered to wash the cups for what amounted to 7 people, or suggested we wait whilst they did. Our next stop was the hunters moon at middlemarsh, despite being extremely busy we had a very warm welcome and were able to have warm drinks. This is the 2 second time my husband and I have been there, the first was of an evening, there was no welcome going in and no acknowledgement on leaving, there wont be a third time.

Only a one night stay. The tasteful Christmas decorations and helpful and professional staff gave an immediate clue to the attention to detail. Dinner was an excellent experience. My wife and I (well, me mostly) very much appreciated the log fire in the comfy lounge where we were served antipasti while we chose from the wide range of dishes on the menu. We were called through quickly and our three courses were presented by attentive staff at just the right intervals. Food was outstanding and the wine was well chosen. Coffee and petit fours back in the lounge in front of the fire again was a fitting conclusion to the evening. The room was quiet and well appointed with a top quality shower room and a gigantic comfortable bed. Breakfast was a revelation to a fairly seasoned hotel user. Everything on the buffet bar was well presented, fresh and tasty. Our breakfast - Kings Breakfast for me and Boiled eggs and soldiers for my wife was perfectly cooked. Overall, this is the best country hotel experience we have had and cannot be recommended highly enough. We will be back and next time will save ourselves for the English Breakfast!
