Just a brilliant find ! 😃 We were a bit late but they were so helpful and fresh cooked our fish suppers while we waited! I say waited. .. actually they sent us to the pub for a swift half!! (Review of Digby Tap can be ready elsewhere 🍺👍😃) As Arnie said ... I'll be back! 😋😋😋 Well worth the 5 stars! ☺️☺️☺️

Such a lovely find. Such friendly service and the fish and chips were some of the best I’ve eaten. I usually find fish quite bland but this was so crispy and mooreish! Big potions too! The guys behind the counter were super friendly, chatty and kept us up to date about our order while they cooked it to order. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Fantastic fish and chips at sensible prices unlike the other place the opposite side of town where the food is good but you pay through the nose for it. Food is always ready for collection at the specified time. Love the banter in there too!

We we’re staying near Sherborne and read the reviews, decided to drive in and get a takeaway as we were self catering. It was a surprise to find the restaurant is owned by 2 of my fellow Scottish countrymen! The crack was great as I waited for my order to be freshly cooked, as I had 4 miles to travel they made sure the food was specially wrapped, placed it in a box for me with lots of foil around the bags, just so kind of them. The fish was absolutely amazing and the batter crisp and not in the least bit greasy. Wow 😯 wish I had this place on my doorstep, absolutely outstanding fish and chips. Highly recommend should you find yourself in Sherborne. However please remember that it’s cash only, but there’s a Sainsbury’s round the corner so cash easy to get. Fabulous find for us, no wonder they’re busy, they thoroughly deserve a fabulous review. Thanks guys for a wonderful meal

To average 4.8 on Google is extremely difficult. These guys well deserve it. A proper traditional fish shop of the highest consistent quality. It is clear this place is not run for the benefits of high profits, but for the pride of supplying the very best skilled cooking of fish and chips. There are few supreme masters of fish and chips but you will find them here.

REAL chips ! One of the few non-commercialised chippies left - they know how to fry the perfect portion... Very reasonable prices - typical Scottish fairness ! Also I may never find out why these generous folk from the far North (!) gave me TWO pieces of cod - 1 slightly more cooked than the other, which was done to half a turn. If my ancestors weren't from Yorkshire I might consider going back to pay for it. Cash only - not too much of an issue - it's nice to see a bit of proper royalty now and again. In all seriousness, if you ever wonder why fish & chips tasted so much better in the 1980's then take a trip down Half Moon Street, Sherborne for dinner and remind yourself !

Popped in for a quick lunch. Really hard/impossible to find a reasonably priced place for lunch in Sherborne. Well this is it. Chips were gorgeous , freshly cooked, crisp on the outside , soft in the middle.Friendly and welcoming staff. Perfect. Stones throw from the Abbey, next to a wonderful second hand book shop. What's not to love. People get here!!

Only had some chips after a visit to a few of the local pubs, but they were absolutely lovely. And it’s cash only! Cash is king….Bosh!

We live 30 seconds away from the other chip shop in town, but often make the effort to go to the Abbey Friar because it's so much better. The cod is lovely and crispy and the chips are good. Would be 5/5 but the curry sauce isn't much cop.

My wife and I had takeaway cod, chips and mushy peas. Delicious and excellent value. Very highly recommended.

Abbey Friary is always our first port of call for a fish and chip supper. Always annoyed if we have to go elsewhere. We live in a small hamlet called Beer Hackett and have to travel about 5 miles but well worth it. Have been visiting this fish and chip shop now for five years and have never had a bad meal. Just hoping they are open tonight for our meal.

I have been going to abbey friar for years. At the start they served the best fish and chips by miles. Over the best year it’s gone down hill. I think that the oil they use as changed leaving the fish almost tasteless. The last fish and chips I had from them the chips had a green tint to them. The batter was under cooked and looked like wall paper paste. I left the chips and on the way home I was almost sick. Like many other businesses in the area they are cutting corners and it’s beginning to show.

Simply the best value and quality fish and chips as well as many other fried dishes. It is eat in or take away. The boys there are Scots and banter flows freely. GREAT.

This establishment is, very much, an excellent community asset. Most of the customers enjoy the banter whilst their orders are freshly cooked by the two Scotsmen. My order was cod, chips and mushy peas. All excellent, particularly the chips which are, always, much less greasy than I’ve had from some other similar eating places.

Visited after looking on here for the best chippy to visit whilst in the area, but left in a hurry. We thought it would be great to visit this particular store after a long walk in the cold because pictures showed a seating area. Upon arrival we saw two doors, one of which led to another door which we presumed was the seating area (which was correct but it was all shut up with no lights etc no notice to say it was closed on the door). When closing the door we peered into the take away area and two young girls were watching us and laughing. It would have been nice if they had assisted us instead of acting their age. This lovely gesture was then followed up by a grown man hollering at us to go round and use the other door which led to everyone waiting in the queue to turn and stare at us tutting as if we were suddenly pushing in line. My husband replied that we were merely looking at the menu opposite us as we'd never visited and we were once again shouted at to go around to the other door. When exiting we noticed that neither door was labelled entrance or exit. This visit was not only frustrating but also embarrassing and completely unnecessary. My newspaper delivery boy has more customer service.

Very welcoming in The Abbey Friar. Two brothers run it together. It is always busy and is popular. The prices are really good too. My children like having a treat and going there.

I had the pleasure of working in Sherborne for 5 years in a row in a summer school and the first thing I did was stop by this chippy. Love the banter and dry whit of the Scottish brothers while you're waiting. And you do have to wait, sometimes out the door, which gives you some indication of how good the fish n chips are. They truly are the best I've ever eaten and unfortunately the summer school moved location but I still dream of going back to Sherborne JUST for the fish n chips to go and eat on the grass near the Abbey.

The lads suffered an equipment meltdown just prior to Pack Monday Fair.I went to collect cod and chips on the Saturday evening to see two disheartened Scotsmen.Was it because they hail from Dumbarton, and not Greenock.?...no.The Flux Capacitor in their deep fat fryer had let them down on the busiest weekend of the year with Pack Monday Fair looming..... absolute disaster..... a bit like Dumbarton’s fitba’ team.......Luckily, the day was saved by local electrician hero.Good hearted banter.....Genuine kindness.... I’ve seen them offer a customer who’d forgotten her purse, a free fish supper if she’d drop the money in later.Great cod and chips....Could we get hake onto the menu.... more sustainable and probably tastier than the threatened cod species?Top lads.... best eating experience in Sherborne.....and bloody cheap..Ian

I was working late and not knowing the area, i stubbled across this wonderful fish and chip shop! Great customer service and fantastic friendly atmosphere! They were so helpful and generous. A huge portion of chips and very good value for money! I would highly recommend them and i will make sure to stubble upon this place again!

Lovely people running the place. There are 2 brothers and they are Scottish, so they know what they are doing. Fish and chips are lovely there. Eating in is available, but sometimes they don't do it. Just check with the staff. Also they support charity called "Chernobyl children" which is amazing!

We rarely have fish and chips unless at the seaside, but when we do it is usually from here! Friendly service, always welcomed, great value and delicious. A few yards away from the Abbey, you can sit and watch the world go by with your take away delights...and this includes other foods than just fish and chips...or you can sit upstairs in the restaurant with a bottle of wine.

Fairly recent move to Sherborne and was informed this is the "plaice" for F & C. Not wrong. Lovely Fish & Chips and great atmosphere.

I often get fish n chips here for my Wednesday lunch . I drive a van delivering Organic produce and have to nip in , place my order and return after my last drops in the town centre. We drive past two fish & chip shops to get to The Abbey Friar, one of them voted the the 3rd best chippy in the UK..... apparently, but not in my book.

We arrived hoping to sit in but apparently they only do this on Fridays - pity, as I am sure they could increase their turnover if this was extended to include Saturday as well. The proprietors are both Scottish and have a fantastic sense of humour making all customers feel as if they are really welcome!

We were visitors to the area and wanted Fish n Chips for lunch. First class Fish n Chips and also directions (excellent) to Bristol Airport saved us 20 minutes on our journey.

Best Fish n Chips I've ever had. My family were in Sherborne for only a week and we ate there 4 times. Delicious and more than generous portions. Friendly owners. Hope to be back next year. Big groups can place a to go order, but not enough seating inside. There is the Abbey Green just up the road, plenty of space for a picnic.

Lovely fish & chips freshly served in a friendly atmosphere by a cheerful couple of brothers. An Australian visitor was hugely entertained by the friendly banter and said they were some of the best fish and chips ever.

I organised a social event at Abbey Friar and it was a fantastic evening. The Fish and Chips were delicious and one of our group even went to say it was the best Fish and Chips she had ever eaten! The staff were so accommodating and in particular Georgia who was great, we had such a laugh. Thank you Abbey Friar, we will be back!

Great take away fish and chips for £13, prepared by two burly Scottish blokes who wouldn't look out of place as a pair of night club bouncers. No complaints, just excellent. You couldn't ask for more.
