We were famished and selected this restaurant because we were nearby. We were not disappointed. The interior is quaint and truly pub like; because of the location it is very popular and it was quite busy. We were primarily helped by the manager who was keeping up the pace. My first two choices for pies (including the vegetarian option) were out for the day but my third choice (chicken) was tasty and the pie, gravy, and carrots were all delicious. A pie will a pint (in my case, cider) really hit the spot. The pies look as good as they taste.

Lovely meal and service good. We always tip if good service. We advised to add the tip on, which was gratefully accepted until I noticed that it had already been added on but I wasn't advised that it had been added. This should be advised to customers when the bill is given

Located a few minutes walk from Edinburgh Castle, this ancient gastro pub offers a typical Scottish atmosphere and quality food including special steak pies, grilled salmon and the classic Balmoral chicken with haggis, tables separated by elegant "separates " wooden, fun and friendly staff.

A gem of a pub, friendly staff and fantastic quality food. Highly recommend, we ate there twice in the week we stayed. Good pint as well

Lune, who waited on us was just great. She made sure every visit was perfect. We have been visiting Edinburgh for a week and have been there at least 5 times.

We enjoyed excellent service from Lone. She provided friendly professional service to our production team while we performed during the festival. Mitre was a place for us to eat and relax. By the end of our 10-day run we knew we had a friend. Her assistance in arranging a table where our team of 10 could celebrate with a dinner at the conclusion of our run was very much appreciated. Thank you to the whole staff at Mitre. You helped to make our time in Edinburgh a pleasure.

Buen sitio para probar platos típicos escoceses como el haggis. Nosotros pedimos para compartir un pastel de carne y un plato de haggis, ambos estaban muy bien, de postre pedimos algo similar a un coulant muy bueno también. Recuerdo que el trato fue muy bueno y estar muy a gusto el rato que pasamos allí. Una opción a tener en cuenta si pasas unos días en Edimburgo.

I would walk another royal uphill mile before ever going back. Save your money and your time. After waiting over an hour for food, my fish pie had 5 dried up shrimp, one piece of white mystery fish and one piece of salmon. Service was so slow and we had to ask for the bill multiple times so we might escape. There are so many great places to eat in Edinburgh…this is not one of them.

Authentic pub atmosphere and good selection of draft beers

2 visits to Edinburgh in the last 2 years, both first meals have been at this fantastic pub. The pies are incredible, staff friendly, and the environment is warm and classic. You can't ask for more!

By far the best meal we’ve had in Scotland so far. It’s conveniently on the mile but not in the stupidly expensive part. The pork and haggis sausage with mash, balmoral chicken , fish cakes and the Cullen skink were delicious. Top that off with the 80 beer pumped up from the cellar I’m in heaven.

Great food but very long waiting time

The waiters are not interested in seating you at a table. In general, they rarely pay attention to you. I bought a pie for £17, couldn’t finish it and asked to take it with me. As a result, everyone told me that they did not have the license to give me foil or an empty plastic container. They also added 10% to the bill for no service. I don't recommend it.

Great pub! The food was good and they were kind. It's convenient in the Old Town area, there are also good beers. We will return again because it is convenient. Dogs are also accepted.

Very Scottish atmosphere, warm and friendly, excellent meal for this category of restaurant, typical Ossais dish, hearty, well prepared, and excellently seasoned. Friendly staff but a little overwhelmed. We had a great time.

Misleading opening hours because the kitchen closes at 3pm and remains open only as a pub. In fact, we returned the next day to have lunch, and both the first and second time we waited 10 minutes standing to be greeted by the staff, who in the meantime ignored us even though the tables were free and there was no one there before us. Typical Scottish environment, varied menu, quality food and generous portions. There are several vegan options of which we tried the dessert which was fresh and tasty.

We had a lovely time in this bar. The waiter was very friendly and helpful, we appreciated a large selection of Scotish and British beers, since we wanted to try something local. And prices were reasonable as well.

The food here was honestly pretty good especially for a bar. The service left a lot to be desired though. We were given a booth & it seemed their wait staff had a change of shift & no one was paying attention to our table. It took repeated attempts to get refills for water or even pay our bill.

Best lamb shank pie I've had outside of my own. Meat was cooked just right, having texture and flavour. The Mrs had Beef Stovies and equally happy. The place was stuffed on arrival but the Kiwi floor woman seated us adjacent to dining, having us drink a bev and nail a starter (smoked salmon pictured) allowing the kitchen to catch up (Quality never hurries). The bar and two restaurant floor staff worked seamlessly. The owner should give them a raise. Also be alert for the "Nicklesons" as an alternative name. If you think it's pricey, it's worth every pence.

The fish and chips here was extremely delicious, the Balmoral Chicken sadly wasn’t for me but it was decent. The Meat Pie was apparently delicious! The cocktails are yummy! It overall was a good stop.

Poor service, staff made the effort to ignore us after they forgot to take our drinks order and then told us we never put one in. The food however was delicious.

If you are thinking about eating here, DON’T!!! As a service worker, I understand having a bad day but there should absolutely be no reason for our server to treat us how he did when we dined in. We were told we needed to eat asap because there was a reservation (which we understood) never once were we served and when we asked to put an order it the server made it seem like the biggest inconvenience. I’m sorry it’s your job??? We felt so uncomfortable by our server we just walked out which is something I never would expect to have to do in a restaurant. We tried our best to be understanding but once he went on about how much he hates his job we thought otherwise. This was the worst restaurant experience I had so a word of advise - don’t bother coming here.

I saw this place on a few listings for best places to watch Euro 24. I came here to find three small size screens on top of the wall so you need to lift your head up all the time. The staff was not interested in showing me a table that can see one of the screens. She said you can stand at the bar and watch the match. I went myself to grab a chair. There is no sound on TVs. When I asked the lady at the bar, she was “extremely helpful” by saying that “they can’t turn on the volume, it’s the rules and she’s just working there”. When I asked for peanuts, I received a package of peanuts, but thanks to her she brought me a small bowl when I asked for one:) All in all, ok to come here for a drink but don’t expect any bare minimum of service and DO NOT COME FOR WATCHING EUROS.

Good pub food, so be careful what you order

The servers here were so friendly and helpful, they were able to grab us a table with only a 5 minute wait when it was super busy. The burger was a little mushy and I would definitely choose something else if I went again, but the salmon and lamb shank pie were excellent. The atmosphere was cosy, but towards the end of the evening the noise from the bar grew loud and we had to shout to each other to be heard.

Lovely place, comfortable, but very expensive.

We stopped in for a pint and a snack, and to get out of the rain. Cool pub that they say is still haunted (the chair up on the wall pic). Great food, the fish bites were so fresh with a crunchy breading, and chicken bites were recommended and really good. ( Not your frozen nuggets) I was disappointed that they didn't have the scotch egg, I was really looking for one, but can understand cause the bartender said they were out. Maybe next time if we get back.

Fantastic pub in a very central location of the city, highly recommend for a couple of pints of you're out in town.

We were a party of 4 and although service was good our food for 2 of us was terrible. Our food was cold, there was 4 small bits of chicken in the pie, one meal was very spicy and was not stated to be on menu, and the bread was hard. For the price of the food it was deflating. Otherwise a lovely place.

Food arrived one hour after we sat down and ordered! On tight schedule, so we ordered when they took our drinks order. It was a Monday night and it was busy but not swamped for this reservations only place. My chicken and oyster mushroom pie was decent, but the TWO white chicken chunks were huge and not appetizing. Additionally, my wife's vegetarian burger burger was bland, cold, and the cheese had never been melted. Despite the extreme delay, they were NOT able to provide us take-away box for my pie. They said they weren't licensed for it. They did adjust the bill. The tables in front and behind had arrived shortly after us and yet had their food before we inquired about our food some 10-15 minutes before our food finally arrived.

Staff more interested in conversation between themselves! Tables outside left with glassware for hours so you basically sit with left over drinks from customers which left 2 hours before. Their famous pies…pastry dry as a shoe of a homeless person, steak pie filling the size of a child portion, cold carrots and gravy from Knorr instant mixture…ITS NOT A REAL FOOD!!!!

We were greeted by a hostess who practically told us to leave. She chased away a couple in front of us, then told us we'd have to wait at least an hour for a table. We asked if we could eat at the bar. She said, "No." So we said we'd drink in the bar until a table opened up. She said that we couldn't leave. We explained that we wouldn't leave. She tried to tell us that they were out of most entrees. We said we'd wait. She sighed and put us on a list. We got a table about 15 minutes later. Our bartender and waitress were wonderful. The food was worth the brief wait. The hostess was just a bad egg in a good restaurant. I have faith that this problem will be corrected, soon.

This place is great, especially if you are looking for some authentic Scottish cuisine. The food was so good and we wished we had another night in Edinburgh to go again and try some other dishes.

We went here on my brother's recommendation. A nice pub, beer was good, service friendly. But I think there are cooler pubs in the city. Unfortunately, the women's toilet was not clean and had a strong smell. But very nice from the outside and inside.

Quality food, fast service, very nice place and above all very comfortable given that it is located exactly in the center. I recommend making a reservation at the restaurant. All really good, prices in line with Scottish ones.

£18.20 for a pint of Hells and a large house wine, the bar was quiet but there were empty glasses covering tables with nobody sitting at them. Wouldn't give them the business.

This is a grand pub, was in last night , great atmosphere and bar staff , have booked a meal in there for tonight ...update..myself and wife have just had our meal..wonderful.i had the chicken Balmoral which was fabulous, ian the manager was tremendous..visit this pub you won't be disappointed

I do love a Nicholson bar, this place does not let you down. Friendly bar staff with an atmosphere to match and an ice cold clean crisp pint recommend by the barman.

We had a great time in this pub. The buttermilk chicken burger and the haggis were both really really good! A good variety of different ciders. The lovely waitress did a great job and was very kind and funny. When there’s a chance, we will definitely come back to this place!

We stopped in here for a nightcap as our accommodation was right next door. The barman was so friendly and helpful, we returned the next evening. Again the staff were lovely and we had no trouble getting served even though all the tables were occupied. The following day when we collected our bags before heading home we stayed and tried the food. Everything was really tasty - we all chose a Scottish option from the menu and it didn’t disappoint.

Would definitely recommend! I had the nicest burger I have ever had here. It was the beef brisket burger. I believe this is a must if you visit. Not to mention, the pies that I saw being taken over to other tables looked outstanding. I will definitely be back 👍🏻

The food here was delicious! Honestly, because it’s in a tourist hotspot I wondered if it would just be ok. Wrong! We all had traditional Scottish fare, and it was so good—from the appetizer to the dessert. And everything was piping hot and so fresh. Go!

The area is conveniently reached via public transportation. With live music playing, the pub has an incredible ambiance and a truly pleasant barman staff. They are establishments that I would strongly advise both local residents and tourists to visit while in Edinburgh. Food is also available to be served on request.

A lovely atmospheric pub restaurant. Short staffed but the staff that were there were doing a great job of holding the Fort. Food was amazing. 2 starters & 2 mains bottle of red and 2 pints came to £99. Worth every penny.

Very nice pub in the city centre with excellent service and tasty food. The servers were very attentive and I could see them trying hard to accommodate everyone. I thought the start would have been slightly bigger and the pie’s crust was slightly too hard for my liking but not a disaster by any means and it was busy. Would come back to try something else.

Fantastic venue. Perfect for those who want to try typical cuisine and be on the safe side. We went on a Friday evening and there were a lot of people. Even on the cocktail bar side we were satisfied with good drinks and correct preparation.

This typical Scottish pub is located a few steps from the Royal Mile, a super welcoming environment and very kind staff. You can book directly from their website. The food we tried was great! In particular, I recommend the Fish and Chips, very light fried food and excellent quality fish. The prices are definitely not low, but it's worth it.

Pub located in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. Extensive menu of beers and whiskey, good atmosphere and service. They also have some tables reserved in case you want to eat something.

We have booked a place for dinner on sunday and it was incredible!! The staff was really lovely and we had a lovely ambience with nice music in the evening. I have enjoyed the pies and the drinks. Having a price in the drink list will be better since it was odd to not have a price on the menu. Lovely atmosphere and nice location!

Very nice bar inside and with a huge assortment of drinks. The service is a little slow but courteous. The only flaw is that the chairs are very uncomfortable and there is no place for jackets.

We popped in after visiting the castle for a drink and had some lovely bar snacks. We liked the atmosphere so we booked a table for the evening. Had a lovely meal in evening and the staff, food and service was great.

We had drinks earlier in the day ,the staff were really friendly &helpful.We came back for our meal later on .The meal was absolutely gorgeous.The steak&ale pie was the best I've had .My wife had the chicken&haggis &my son had the cheese,bacon burger.Which everyone enjoyed the puddings were lovely as well If we come back to Edinburgh we would definitely come back to the Mitre for something to eat&drink.I had the 80 shillings pint which is one of the best real ales I have had in a long time.

The main reason for adding this review is to recommend one of the members of staff who goes above and beyond in terms of customer service. Her name is Lone who originates from Norway. Lone was super friendly and made us feel very welcome. We hope you get accepted for your masters in linguistics ( how could they refuse!) The Stovies was very nice, but probably not as good as your mum makes it!

A group of friends are going to Edinburgh for the weekend and we want to watch rugby in a pub. We booked at The Miter to eat and drink, after seeing several by searching on Google. We were attentive to when it was possible to reserve online (1 month in advance) and we were able to do it just at the time we could. So far everything is great. Well, 2 weeks later the pub canceled the reservation claiming that, for a group of 7, since we were not going to eat (a lie, they assumed this...) and we would only go to drink and watch the rugby, we would do it standing up. .. Not only did they not ask questions and give us no options, but they also made excuses that all they do is damage the hospitality image of Scotland. Furthermore, with the reservation being canceled so late, we have not had time to book in another pub and be able to enjoy rugby in this city as it deserves. In short, disgust for what they have done to us and an unreliable pub, without good customer service.

Nicholson's chain pub. Went on a Thursday (it was quiet) but it was absolutely full on Saturday with the live music. I enjoyed the drinks on offer and we stayed for 4 hours or so! It doesn't shut at 1am though... For food there's some nice seating at the back of the pub although we only went for drinks on both occasions. Staff tried their best throughout our visit.

We went on our first day in Edinburgh, we asked for recommendations and they gave them to us, a success. In addition, the waiters were super attentive to us. When we left, the waiter who served us the entire time recommended places to go. The place is beautifully decorated, the quality of the food is exquisite and in line with the price considering the location. If we return, we will repeat.
